It’s probs earned the little refresh you’ve given to the bodywork, that red paint has made the decals on the side almost brand new. As ever a nice chilled out episode, I enjoyed the choice, especially the songs by Hobo Dave.
Thanks for checking out my new video! Yes those blue Shibaura stickers now look almost new again 🙂 Hobo Dave is a good friend of mine 🙂 He makes good music and videos 👍 When you get time look up (HOBO DAVE Suburban wilderness ) on UA-cam, it’s a good story about him, life and healing. Great vid Mike. Reminded me of the 1st tractor I bought back in 2001. Shibaura SD3240 with a new Koyker loader and 5' box blade. I used to get parts for a Ford 1710 which was similar enough to fit my unit. Sold that when I bought a new JD 4320 and now I have a Kubota L2501 I bought new in 2018. I also have a Bolens-Iseki G152 (diesel) with Howard tiller and a Bolens HT20 for general use. Down to 3 tractors from a high of 7 about 4 yrs ago, lol.
IMHO - You just secured yourself a place in machine heaven for what you did for that old Shibaura... (Side note - that Suzuki VX800 has got to be one of the most underrated general purpose street bikes of all time.)
Thanks for court my video! Yes the VX800 is a cool bike, that’s my friends, he rode it to my house about 5 years ago, the voltage regulator burned out so he parked it there, came by and installed a new one but he never picked it up again. I own a 1972 Honda CB 350 four, fun little bike, sounds great at 10,000 RPMs! 🙂
@@Mikefestiva He must not be in a hurry to get his bike back... 😆 I have around a dozen bikes around my place. I also own a 1972 Honda but it's a CB100. Those CB350s are another underrated one. Everyone wants the CB400 Four or the CB500 Four. They are all like little gems to me.
"while i'm in there, i might as well..." is the bane of my existence. i can never just do one project, i have to tear the whole vehicle apart lol. love these restoration videos Mike.
My dad and I went half on a Kubota 3901 4x4. We went with the 4 speed manual trans and a 2 speed transfer case. We bought new because of the price of a new one with a backhoe vs a used one with a backhoe was only a few thousand dollars difference. We financed it because they were offering 0% interest. I like your little tractor, pretty darn sweet!
Hey Mike, thanks for bringing us along…I do the same thing with my projects, just a quick oil change leads to a week of mods and upgrades..love it..:) sweet old tractor
You have a reliable tractor there for sure. A John Deere 955 would be worth looking into in my opinion. I have a 755 and it's been absolutely rock solid! 955s are hydrostatic but 33 hp and mostly all mechanical. Just something to consider.
I love seeing the old machines getting some love. Funny thing is I was just watching an episode of Tractor Time with Tim where he talked about the source of some of the compact tractors... this one did not come up!
Right on thanks for checking out my new video man! Yes Dave makes some good music 👍 he’s also an awesome person. If you get time check out one of the movies he made, it’s called ( Hobo Dave Suburban Wilderness) it’s also an album so look on YT for the movie. It starts with some surfing but turns into a story of his life. It’s about life and healing from growing up with a broken family. Take care and have a great weekend 👍
My dad got a Kubota in the early '80's the size you are looking for, low 20 hp 'ish 4x4, it was a beast on our small ranch. Made like you are talking about, all cast iron and solid. Wish we still had it! Loved the vid, brought back some great old memories.
Had a 1910 ford since 1988 made by Shibaura. Excellent tractor. Finally sold it last year and upgraded to a much larger old Kubota. Oddly the only problems over that 30 plus years were one water pump, several batteries, and slashes in the sidewall of the original tires.
My sandbox, when I was a kid, was a tractor tire. It had a plywood cover painted yellow with a smiley face on it. 🙂 The 70s and early 80s were a great time.
Really nice video, the older Japanese equipment is made so well. I love the older Honda power equipment and I drive a 2002 Toyota Tacoma TRD. 220,00 miles daily driver.
In the late 1970s, early 1980s, my dad owned an Iseki brand, and it was *exactly* like yours, apart from the color. The dash panel especially with the glowing glow plug indicator, battery location and the massive size of the axels. I'm betting they were the same. Little 2 cylinder diesel, 4 wheel drive and size all match. Cool.
I have a Shenniu 254 Hardy diesel tractor that I bought new back in 1996 with a loader and backhoe, got it new, delivered back then for $12,500... Here it is 25+years later and it is always ready to work!
I have a John Deere 755, that seems to be made well. Steal rear axle housing, HST that seems to be holding up very well. About the same size as yours. I made a backhoe subframe (4 point style) for an old "kubota" like woods backhoe that fits it. I don't plan on getting anything newer to replace it. Love the paint on the old tractor... might be doing that to mine soon.
Looks nice. When the housing market bubble hit and I didn't build a single house in 3 years, I started refurbing skid steers in my garage. A couple of hints: The secret to a 10 foot paint job is to concentrate on feathering the old paint with a sander. Like a 500 grit. Believe it or not, don't use HVLP, use rattle cans. The paint tends to be thicker and hides more. HVLP is great for cars when you have a really nice surface to spray, but it shows way too much on the surfaces you're spraying here. You can find implement paint at farm stores that works great or buy manufacturers spray paint in rattle cans if you can find it. Rust oleum primer works great over a little surface rust, and it's a good base that builds over chips and pits. The best thing that I learned (You probably can't do it because I doubt you can find the decals) is to paint right over the decals and place the new ones right over the old. They really help with placing the new ones. I sold 50 skids over the 3 years, and I still see them around. They still look pretty good, and I never had any complaints.
Mike, Love your videos! IMHO Yanmar is the way to go, I bought a SA 424 about 2 yrs ago and it is built like a tank. I work it hard, built 350" driveway with 80 - 100 tons of road millings, moved 20-25 logs for the neighbor that were 30-36" dia. Moved a large rock pile and made a pad to store my attachments on and it will spin all 4 ties when digging. 24.9 HP and a 10 year power train warranty, so they are still built to last. It is Hydro, not manual (dang it), but I do have to save it is growing on me. Keep up the good work!
IMO, She’s just the perfect size tractor. Nimble and powerful. Sure, 24hp is bigger than 18hp, but she’s forever reliable and you’ve safely managed to be productive with her these last 8 years. Maybe as robust as she is she could handle a turbo on that motor? Just thinking out loud with a huge smile. 😄. You’ll find what’s right for you 👍👍😎👍👍
Thanks Joel! Definitely a good size especially on the skinny trails on my property, smaller compact but really capable of moving a lot of dirt and logs. Take care buddy and have a great weekend 👍
Just can't beat those old tractors and it shows, they get hammered, beaten up and still go! I was a farmer 30 years ago and every farm had an old Massey Ferguson 35. These tractors had multiple bolt on patches on the tires and (I kid you not) welded bolts on the cylinder head because it was an easy quick fix! They are probably still going to this day. Your little tractor is pretty much the same - and your TLC will keep it going further. Thanks again for a splendid video and good editing with "ye old timer" music.

What a great transformation and you are right about sticking with Japanese agricultural machinery, there tractors were built for purpose and Yanmar are a very much respected brand so I'd stick with that manufacturer for your next upgrade👽
I had an old gray market Kubota about the same vintage. I'm pretty sure it was 23 horsepower, my introduction to the wild differences between industrial horsepower and what vehicles advertise. That damn thing had more grunt than many machines I have owned three times the size. It's most blatant weak point was simply a lack of weight, I never did find a task that made the engine bug down at all. My wife got tired of being made to sit on the hood so eventually I rigged up lead wheel weights and a few 55 gallon drums full of water. I still regret getting rid of that machine. It had a two-speed axle besides the transmission, if you put it in low low, you could walk beside it grooming the driveway and throwing limbs straight into the trailer, it would move slightly slower than a man walking. Built like a brick shithouse but not the slightest nod to comfort. Absolutely perfect machine for a low cost homestead
I love those old tractors we have a John Deere 2010 that my father in law used as a kid in the tobacco fields back east now we use it for everything here on the west coast just a cool little machine
I retired last year and bought some land and a Kubota 5 year old BX23S, so, now I'm offended. 🤣😂🤣Okay, got that out of the way, thanks for another interesting video. I had never heard of this brand before, it looks like a very well built tractor. Also, thanks for periodically sharing channels you find interesting, you have caused me to subscribe to at least two channels I would have never come across.
Man ive ruined many shirts and shorts climbing on, rolling around and swinging on old tires. Used to infuriate my buddys wife when i let their son roll an old round track slick around, he would roll over it and it rolled over him but he was black as the tire when he left…..good times! Did an awesome job upgrading the paint, too much body work and its overdone for the year and covers all the character up. Your “good enough” was perfect for it. Look for about a 30hp Iseki tractor, heavy and built like a tank for its size. I bought a 55hp Mahindra and have been happy with it and it has surpassed my expectations, i looked at used for 5yrs and most had 400-2000hrs but still wanted nearly new prices so i bought one with .8hrs but was a 2yr old tractor and saved $14k plus got an upgraded bucket, box blade and 3rd valve for the loader. Still wish i could find a 30-35hp with a loader like a JD955 hydrostatic for my dad so he didnt have to climb up on mine, it bothers his knees climbing up on it
Tractors last a long time when you take care of them. This is a baby compared to the 1000s of 8Ns, 9Ns, 2Ns, Farmalls that are out there. I paint my loader bucket every other year. Looks good.
I now want an old Japanese tractor! Great job Mike! Your projects are great, as always. Really like how it turned out. Cool seeing your dad, enjoy him! Thanks for sharing this with us! Keep doing good work brother
As usual, great stuff Mike! I don't have enough land to need a tractor, yet! Once my kids get through college I hope to change that! Good to get advice from you on reasonably price tractor options. My buddies are the "buy the newest and latest" kind, I'm more in line with the way you seem to be. Thanks for a great vid Mike! Keep them coming!!!
Looks great Mike 👍 You did the exact amount of work it deserves! I get myself into trouble getting carried away all the time. I'm a detailer by trade and knowing me I would have would have been foolish enough to skim the whole thing in glazing and finish it off with 2 part clear, wet sand/polish and be actually disappointed in the finished product 😆😆😆
I definitely know what you are talking about, I try to be realistic about the outcome, I weigh out my time to the end results and my plan was for a 10 footer 👍 That is the finish looks good at 10 plus feet away 😂 Take care 👍
Had a '72 Ford 1000, I'm pretty sure it was a shibaura. Loved it, my dad bought it new and used it in his excavating company. I sold it about 3 years ago for $4,500
What a great therapeutic video you made for the end of my day. Those older tractors are way beyond what is offered new today. I am in total agreement that computers and emissions don't belong on something as a tractor but what can we do about mandates. Also, I have never seen a hydrostatic shift tractor go the distance that a good clutch and manual transmission can go. Keep them coming, I always look forward to your videos.
Great video and some solid logic on that decision… Just because something is new or modern doesn’t make it better. That bike frame in the shed door looks pretty darn cool Mike! Love to see you restore that.
I have a mid 70s gray market kubota b7000, with a loader off a b7100. Unbelievable reliable and useful for such a tiny tractor. Gathering firewood and fencing work. If your looking for a pretty challenging project. Make a brush grapple for your tractor. Even more challenging, make one that doesn’t require expanding hyd., something like Westendorf brush crusher. Regarding tractor tires; patch and repair until they rot.
I own a Shibaura SD1800. It's got a front end loader as well as a backhoe on it. I bought it about 10 years ago in Washington state from a welder who imports used Japanese tractors by the container load. He then fabricates the front end loader and the backhoe from scratch in his fab shop. I've done a lot of work with over the years on my property. It runs great. I was lucky to find a factory parts manual for the SD1800 and the SD1840 on eBay in Japan not long after I bought the tractor. The seller mailed it over to me. The manual is written in both Japanese and English. I also have a Ford shop manual for models 1100 to 2110. I find the Ford model 1500 has a lot of things in common with the SD1800. I've replaced the front tires of mine. The back tires are still in really good shape. According to the fellow I bought my tractor from, it spent it's life in Japan working in the rice fields therefore it wasn't worked too hard. By the way I really enjoyed your video. Thanks for posting it.
Right on! These tractors are very well built, my tractor was imported to Washington as well, the person I got it from bought it from an importer in Shelton, the front end loader definitely looks like it was built from the importer. 🙂
@@Mikefestiva I bought mine in Hoquiam, WA which is not too far from Shelton. The name of the company I bought from is called Coldwater Tractors. I'm not sure if they're still there. Like you, I'm sure glad I bought a Shibaura tractor.
@@tube396 You know mine could have very well come from Hoquiam as well, I was thinking Shelton but it definitely could have been the same place you got yours from. I have had my tractor for 8 years or so and the previous owner probably had it for 5 or 6 years before me.
Right on! Yes Yanmar tractors are really well built 👍 If I sell my Shibaura in the future I have been considering a 25 to 30 HP Yanmar from the early to mid 80s
i had a 1996 kubota b2400 (with those thin axles - they're made so you can widen the track) i had it for 26 years, put close to 3k hrs on it. i had a few issues with it, mostly leaks, but the hydrostatic drive never gave me any problems. i used it pretty hard too. I did bend one of those skinny axles though :( overall it too a lot of abuse and kept going. the engine just worked. never had an issue with that. i upgraded earlier this year for a 2006 l3800 with less than 300 hours on it (under 200 when i bought it) so far so good. i like the extra power, but i miss the maneuverability of the b series. i can't speak for any other brands, but the orange tractors have treated me pretty well
Those and yanmars were some of the best tractors made, I run old yanmars on my small farm, been completley thru them they never miss a beat, work all day. Solid mechanically injected diesels, no electronics, no BS.
I enjoyed the video very much you did a nice job and I can tell you’ve got a lot of common sense and you were doing the right thing so I will be watching more for your videos and have a nice nice day God bless
Toughest little tractors ever - they used great stuff building them. Ford / New Holland knew what they were doing by rebranding them. Achilles heel can be really hard starting as stuff wears - but it takes forever to get to that.
Nice clean up, looks great for its age, and will probably be great for many more years… I’ve used that Rust Reformer stuff a few times now and I’m very happy with it…
I have a Kioti CK2610 HST and they are said to be pretty bullet proof. I also have a Kioti RX7320 and a project tractor Kubota L2950 GST that sounds like exactly what you are looking for. They are pretty rare. Mine only has 150 hrs on it but needs every rubber piece replaced plus all cylinders rebuilt - barn find if you will. If it ever gets under a 1000F down here in Texas, maybe I can find the time to work on it. LOL
12:35 always a joy to see that old bimmer in the background :) Had a few of those a few years ago. But i was an idiot and sold the last one. Need to get my self a new one :)
they made ford/new holland 1300-1900 series tractors. i use a 1920, and a 1720 with a rhino front loader at work, and they're as trusty and dependable as a loyal mule, without the stubbornness.
I remember the playground tractor tires well. I told my son about them year's ago, he said why would anyone climb on a tire 😆. We used to hide in the big tires, the teacher would be so mad when we didn't come in with everyone else. I believe I got paddle once for hiding after recess. I deserved it 😆
It’s probs earned the little refresh you’ve given to the bodywork, that red paint has made the decals on the side almost brand new.

Thanks Richard 👍
Looks great, really tidied it up. Modern gear is just not built to last.
That looks like my cold water tractor loader! Love your videos! Keep up the good work!
Super nice project - in one video. I'd like to see more of that!
Looks great Mike 👍
You did the exact amount of work it deserves! I get myself into trouble getting carried away all the time. I'm a detailer by trade and knowing me I would have would have been foolish enough to skim the whole thing in glazing and finish it off with 2 part clear, wet sand/polish and be actually disappointed in the finished product 😆😆😆
I definitely know what you are talking about, I try to be realistic about the outcome, I weigh out my time to the end results and my plan was for a 10 footer 👍 That is the finish looks good at 10 plus feet away 😂
Take care 👍
Nicely done Mike. That thing will give you back for more years now
The new paint sure makes your tractor look Rad! Great job Mike.
Thanks Jerry
Good job Mike! She’s like new!
Thank you and thanks for watching
Never heard of Hobo Dave but man that music is gold
Definitely!!!
Great video and some solid logic on that decision… Just because something is new or modern doesn’t make it better. That bike frame in the shed door looks pretty darn cool Mike! Love to see you restore that.
Nice Mike! One job always leads to another !
Truly a Mike of all trades. Looks great.
I enjoy the simple restorations like this, paint job looks great for what it is.
Old goody Japanese equipment.👍
Definitely well built stuff! 🙂👍
Looks good Mike. That's a pretty sweet tractor.
Mike, I recently purchased a Yanmar YM 342, the machine is an absolute beast. It is efficient powerful and it is built to last
relevant how?
I did bend one of those skinny axles though :( overall it too a lot of abuse and kept going. the engine just worked. never had an issue with that. i upgraded earlier this year for a 2006 l3800 with less than 300 hours on it (under 200 when i bought it) so far so good. i like the extra power, but i miss the maneuverability of the b series. i can't speak for any other brands, but the orange tractors have treated me pretty well
Cool fix!
Thanks for checking out my new video 🙂👍
Those and yanmars were some of the best tractors made, I run old yanmars on my small farm, been completley thru them they never miss a beat, work all day. Solid mechanically injected diesels, no electronics, no BS.
Definitely 👍
Nice job Mike little bit of paint looks brand new Matt from Indio California
Looks great! Definitely worth the effort.
As beautiful as a restored 1978 Datsun 280Z.
I enjoyed the video very much you did a nice job and I can tell you’ve got a lot of common sense and you were doing the right thing so I will be watching more for your videos and have a nice nice day God bless
Good tractors I had a ford 1210 that was a shabara it was tough but parts was expensive and hard to come by in my parts so I got rid of it
Great video Mike!
Thanks for checking out my new video Jerry! 🙂👍
Great work! If I had some property I would totally have something like this.
Thanks for checking out my new video Tom! Definitely a good compact tractor 👍 Have a great weekend man! 🙂
Toughest little tractors ever - they used great stuff building them. Ford / New Holland knew what they were doing by rebranding them. Achilles heel can be really hard starting as stuff wears - but it takes forever to get to that.
real Nice project Mike ,glad you took us along thanks .
Thanks for checking out my new video! 🙂
Looks really nice!
Thanks Cody! 👍🙂
Nice clean up, looks great for its age, and will probably be great for many more years… I’ve used that Rust Reformer stuff a few times now and I’m very happy with it…
I happen to own a ford 1100 shiubara built 2 cylinder 2 stroke diesel great tractors pretty bullet proof too
Yes a little paint shows you took care of it a little bit.
What a great little tractor…….that paint really made her pop.
Thanks 🙂👍
I have a Kioti CK2610 HST and they are said to be pretty bullet proof. I also have a Kioti RX7320 and a project tractor Kubota L2950 GST that sounds like exactly what you are looking for. They are pretty rare. Mine only has 150 hrs on it but needs every rubber piece replaced plus all cylinders rebuilt - barn find if you will. If it ever gets under a 1000F down here in Texas, maybe I can find the time to work on it. LOL
12:35 always a joy to see that old bimmer in the background :)
Had a few of those a few years ago. But i was an idiot and sold the last one.
Need to get my self a new one :)
They sure are cool old cars 👍
The BMW is my brothers car. I have an old Datsun 510 wagon I really need to get running and fix up one of these days 👍
they made ford/new holland 1300-1900 series tractors. i use a 1920, and a 1720 with a rhino front loader at work, and they're as trusty and dependable as a loyal mule, without the stubbornness.
Looks great. A tractor should have some pitting, and a dent or ding or two. Shows it get the use it should. Great video as always.
I remember the playground tractor tires well. I told my son about them year's ago, he said why would anyone climb on a tire 😆. We used to hide in the big tires, the teacher would be so mad when we didn't come in with everyone else. I believe I got paddle once for hiding after recess. I deserved it 😆
ha ha! I also remember going down some pretty steep metal slides that got hottttt in the summer 😆 They just make playground the same any more lol
love the red! and everything else. fantastic little tractor!
