- In this video I build a 3 point log boom out of a tractor trailer hitch receiver.
I wanted to build a tractor implement that wasn't commercially available so I built my own.

Nicely done. Time to build a roll barโฆ
Gotta say, your music selection goes soooo well with the environment and the serenity.
I do miss a bit of your โolderโ jazzy stuff and the drum breaks, but I see why you went with these.
The creativity and work process once again is super inspiring and makes want to get a tractor and some woodlands! ๐
Right on I really appreciate it man! ๐๐ I definitely will bring back the Jazzy stuff on some future videos.
My friends made the music I used in this video, definitely fitting for the content ๐
Nice work. I too was worried that the winch was going to be the weak link.
A roll cage for the tractor maybe? It is a life saving investment. Take care!
I was just about to suggest the same.
I agree, and another great safety modification would be to build a set of wheel spacers for the rear wheels to move them farther apart. Three inch spacers would probably be adequate for your tractor. I operate a 23 HP John Deere tractor on a steep hill and I put six inch spacers on it plus calcium chloride (or beet juice) in the rear tires to increase weight and lower the center of gravity. It definitely puts more strain on the axles and wheel bearings so I keep a close eye on it and operate at low speeds.
Your caution on tractor use is priceless. My neighbor who had been farming all his life didn't come in for dinner one night and his family went out to the field where he had been working and they found him passed away at the back of the tractor with one of his legs ripped off by the power take off assembly. One can never be too careful when operating machinery.
What you really want to do is weld a couple of chains hanging just under your winch. Once you reel your log all the way in, you can hang the log on your pair of chains--- and then loosen some slack in your winch line--- that way, when you're towing it, all of your pulling wear goes onto the chains-- and your winch only gets used when you need it for lifting, and not when you're towing the logs.
@calholli yous sir is quite a genius! Great idea
I don't see the point of the winch because you can raise and lower your hydraulics you lower it down take up the slack pull it up in the air. Instead of a winch and cable put a set of tongs on there. That's what I did I pull up I got it mounted on my bail spear which is way heavier duty than that three-point adapter. I just welded chain clevis on my Bell spear
@@cowbdave99 Yeah, I agree. The winch is still useful for things that you can't really get close to I guess. But he should be using a chain to lift and drag it- by using the hydraulics.
Weld some chain hooks lower on the winch frame, use a choker chain on the log. When you get it winched in, raise your 3pt to bring it all the way in, then lower the 3pt, attach the choker to the hook, and raise the 3pt. You'll now be towing from a lower center of gravity and you'll be towing on the chain instead of your winch cable . With hooks on either side and 2 chokers, you could tow a couple smaller logs out at a time.
This project is very representative of what most farmers do when they need something to get the job done. Find something that you can make work and then make the modifications to make it happen.
I feel that people get lost in the hype of having perfect projects made with ideal equipment and materials. Making due with what you have to make your life better/ easier is really the name of the game.
Have you thought of Fabricating a "Spiked" Hitch Plate to puncture the end of the log to keep it steady?
A 2" square Tube (or whatever size your Receiver is) with a 4"ร4" plate with four 3" Steel Spikes would keep the end of the Log in place without having to use Ratchet straps.
Mike you could use a small grapple hook on 2 feet of chain to handle the load instead of letting the cable take all the weight use the winch to get the log where you need it to hang then use the grapple and chain to take the load weld a big d shackle just below the front of the winch then winch up to height hook grapple around the tree then put chain in d shackle and lower cable to relieve the weight it will save on breaking winches and stretching and breaking wire rope love the build more drum solo's cheers from down under
What Glenn said. The gears on these winches are very weak and prone to fail. Particularly the stop/freespool catch
Thanks for the upload dude, looks like a handy addition to the tractor..:)
Guitar is great enjoy watching
Mike Festiva is certainly living the dream! Wish I had his welding and fabrication skills. Nice work Mike!
Thank you Jeff! I really appreciate it man ๐๐
Mike, Mick here. I like the modification to the cheap 3 point hitch for hauling logs. Giving me some ideas again ๐
Mike, love your stuff! I have an old 4 x 4 Ford (I think Yanmar motor), about 24 hp, 2 cyl. I built an A frame to pull and lift cars, plus a neighbor had a great portable saw mill. I was dragging down 30 to 40 inch oak, ash and pine trees 21 foot long, and was having a big problem with it doing "wheelies". I just added a chain connected directly to the draw bar, and connected it to the bottom of the log (like on the loop you use to lift it). All the difference in the world when it is pulling from down low and not up high. Did the same things when pulling cars or truck. Never had that problem again. If you are going to pull longer logs, this will solve your problem.
Great advice Bill! Thanks ๐
Hi Mike. Make your self a little two wheel dolly that you can strap to the other end of the log so your not dragging it thru the dirt. Plus you saw mill will love you.
That "well hello" had a Mr Rogers vibe to it. ๐
Me Rogers was a good dude ๐๐
Bless Mike , another excellent video for people who love to fabricate. Thanks ๐
Quite a few people have been crushed under a tractor. All the operator's manuals warn against pulling a load with anything other than the lower lift links. Those links are attached below the axle, the tendency is to push the front end down. Pulling from a point a foot or two above the axle is tempting the devil. There are tractor skidding attachments that use chain type chokers, there are several grab hooks at the lower level. They use the winch to move and lift the log. Then lower the log and catch the tail of the choker in one of the hooks. Safer and allows skidding several smaller logs in one turn. Going uphill makes matters worse. One guy might get away with being fast on the clutch, the next guy might be dead before lunch.
I wouldnโt be too worried about the tow point being above the axle. It looks like you are only pulling 1 log at a time, and you seem to keep your head out of your rear end while doing things that might be a bit higher on the danger scale. However, I do agree with Chuck about the choker chain. Using the winch to move the log into position, and then pulling with a chain will drastically reduce the wear and tear on your winch and, more importantly, that little bitty cable.
I like you as a human being and every video post you make
Thanks David ๐ I appreciate it man ๐
Tractor looks good Mike. That new paint makes her look brand new again
Your video made me realize that I always used the front loader to lift the log/tree. Then I would go in reverse. This gave me a good view of the butt end if I needed to make an adjustment to avoid hitting a stump or some other object. I was used to going in reverse when using the bucket because if you were using the bucket to go into a pile of something you had to go in reverse half the time anyway. I had a neighbor that worked in the woods a lot during colder weather. He used a 2 wheel drive Leyland tractor and most of the time he skidded with the front wheels off the ground. He had a way he hitched that kept the load just inside the rear wheels and if the load hit something that might make it go over backwards the tractor was stopped by a bar that was over the logs. This bar would hit the load and prevent the tractor from going any further. Entertaining to watch, with just enough scare factor.
Just like the dragster's anti flip-back bar
I love that little tractor of Yours Mike. Great job on the log Arch type deal...The Sawmill is working flawlessly.. Great job on it also.. and Great Video...
You should mount the winch further down the arm (toward the tractors seat) and mount a roller fairlead where the current winch is mounted.
Hey Mike !
Love the builds you do , just wanted you to fit a cover to the back of that winch .
The cable looks long enough on the log to reach your head and back in the drivers seat.
Stay alive, stay well.
Thanks for the content brother , kept us sane during lockdown .
Hey Mike, awesome work as always, only one thing though, I will put something on that cable while towing, maybe a moving mat or something like that, If that cable brakes it will be coming straight at you my brother. Cheers ๐ป from Miami.
Mike, can't wait to see the excavator thumb build!
Nice sturdy piece of construction.
Giid to see you back Mike.
A simple but very effective tool
nice little project, i like your mill.keep posting Mike..
Thanks Frank! ๐
Mike, Great workhorse addition to that amazing tractor. From this side of the screen it all looks so serene to use, especially when adhering to the basic common sense rules you outlined. I seem to recall you previously hinted at the future project that will use this milled lumber. Will you be sharing that build too? ๐๐๐๐๐
.
Thanks for checking out my new video Joel! Iโm working on a mini cabin project with the lumber Iโm milling this summer, not sure if I will share the cabin on my channel? Possibly in the future or I have been thinking of making a second channel and share different projects on that channel?
Another great build, thanks for sharing Mike!
Another enjoyable build video Mike. Thanks. Good advice about tipping tractors..there were quite a few fatalities round our way in my dad's childhood. Eventually all tractors for commercial use had to have at least a single hoop or a cab...tractor cab production became a viable business until the manufacturers started offering tractors with cabs as standard.
So cool, love it Mike. Fantastic content as usual
Always a job well done
Love your work ๐
Thanks for sharing ๐๐
I was just thinking about doing something similar to this with a carry all. It would take a bit more welding, but I figured I could get something underneath the log and take some stress off the boom, lower the weight. You could probably do the same thing though an attachment where the receiver is. Something to think about.
Hi Mike bought the Sam receiver for moving my trailers when I mow works great for the price like u said not heavy-dudy but works great like what you done thanks
sick video!!!! love the format
Great build, sound advice.
Thanks Tom ๐๐
Looks quit useful, thanks for the insight, all the best to you and your loved ones
Design as you go, that's how my brain works as well. Great job Mike!
Thanks for checking out my new video man ๐๐
Great project and great use of scrap and purchased materials to make the correct tool.
Thanks Keith ๐๐
Top fan of the channel. Start watching when finding a video series about a 420cc Predator-powered articulating 4x4 dump truck.
๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐
Thanks man I really appreciate it ๐๐
Love the idea and simplicity of it. Always enjoy your projects.
A great video to watch on a Sunday afternoon. Thanks, Mike!
Thanks for checking out my tractor video ๐ I hope you and your family are enjoying the summer ๐
Exited to watch the next video and good luck with the next projects.๐
I love inexpensive and simple solutionsโฆ Great job ๐
I see that it was suggested to use chains to carry and secure the log after lifting it with the winch. I second that suggestion.
God job! And thanx for the advise :)
Flipped a 48 ford 8n when I was teenager. Was pinned under it until fire dept lifted it up enough for me to get out. Iโm quite cautious now about loaders I lift or drag, even built a 2 wheel cart to move bales that are to big to carry up and down hills safely. Good simple build.
Great build.
Good piece of engineering . ๐๐ป
Nice attachment! ๐๐
Tractors are easy to get comfortable with and even easier to put ya in the forever box ๐ฌ
Another great vid mike!
Keep up the creativity Mike ๐๐๐ป
Another great video! ๐
Thanks man! I really appreciate it ๐๐
Thanks for sharing Mike, you make it look so easy ๐ Paul (UK)
Thanks for watching Paul ๐๐
thanks for the video, Mike. it's good information.
Even your old builds are great ๐
Thanks ๐
@MikeFestiva, I think I would create a V-shaped and toothed saddle for the 2โ receiverโฆjust replaces the trailer ballโฆso the the log rests in the V and is carried while towing by the hydraulics rather than the winch. You could put a pulley down low by the receiver so that the winch pulls the log FORWARD and DOWN into the V-notch, so the log doesnโt shift too much while towing.
Fun project
Very good Mike.
I built one similar about 1970 for my father's Ford 9N.
Love your videos Mike. Keep up the good work! Watching from Australia ๐
Nice video
Nice project! I gotta go check out your sawmill project.
I have a lot of respect for those that can do things by them selves. I also am a do it yourself guy and enjoy videos such like yours. I just feel bad for those that if the WORLD turns to crap there are only but a few that can fend for themselves. I enjoy your vids keep up the good work, I always tend to learn something new from your videos as well as others.
Nice additions. Now let's see you build a log arch instead of dragging the logs. ๐
I think you have missed that log arch build, I even mentioned I built one in this video, thatโs a video from 5 years ago
Seeing what you built gives me the idea of using the tongue and V part of an old ski boat trailer I have. Iโll just need holes for lower pins and the bracket for upper. ๐
Krafty Mike ๐โฎ๏ธ
Thanks David ๐๐
Great vids you do Mike ๐ Have you thought about making a roll over bar for your little tractor ?
Good work. We shared this video on our homemade tools forum this week ๐
Great video
Hey i would love to see some videos about woodworking
Turned out great Mike
Thanks ๐
Mike, did ya hear the one about the guy that wanted to make an Italian style sports car entirely from wood? He called it a Lumbergini.
Another great build. I love your on-the-fly approach. Thanks for the effort! Firstess time seeing the Firstess in action.
Nice! Now I just need a tractor, some land and a sawmill! :)
Thanks for checking out my log boom video!
๐๐
I got the first two, now I am working on the last one. Just found this channel. sub'd
Youโre living the good life Mike. Well done my good sir
Definitely having fun ๐
Nice work Mike! I woulda had to do some grinding before that paint to make me the welder I ain't ๐
Haha ๐
Thanks for checking out my new video Man ๐๐
Hello from the Netherlands and thanks for the video. Sincerely, Hollandduck
Mike, great advice as this exact same tractor towing accident happened to one of my brothers in 1968 and it cost him his life. I would recommend you build a ROP arch for your tractor...great project for the channel and good for your health! Stay safe.
Very nice Mike, I gotta build me one of those! Most people donโt realize just how heavy those logs are, theyโre no joke and can put a hurtinโ on you if it gets away from you. Iโve got a 25hp LS tractor that would love one of these log hoists, Iโve been using hooks & chains on the bucket to raise & pull them, but your idea is better. Thanks for the idea and the tutorial on how to make it. Yet another excellent video, thanks, ๐
very nice
Good job. ๐
Thanks Allan! Are you still wrenching on cars and trucks?
What projects have you been working on these days?
I have done dozens in the last couple years. Been doing very well, doing cars, trucks, lawn mowers ,boats and outboards.
92 geo tracker is on the menu lately.
Add a socket on the frame to 'park' the ball hitch when you are using the frame for skidding perhaps Mike?
Nice ๐
I refuse to drag logs. The bark gets full of dirt and dulls your blades, chain saw or band saw. I made a log arch that can carry a 12โ long 24โ without touching the ground. If interested, I will send you a picture.
I made a log arch over 4 years ago ๐ If you are interested I have a video on that build. I find the log arch to be useful in many situations but not all.
A hose will take care of the dirt saw mills use water to clean the dirt off the logs
Suggest scooping some gravel into the front bucket when pulling your logs.
Nice video ๐
Nice job on the wrench...bumper would be nice...
Great video usual Mike
I do have a A complaint though...
I need more breaks that involve drums....
Haha ๐ right on man, I will try and add some in a future video ๐
Mount the winch on the arm so you can run the cable up and over a pulley that you mount where the winch currently sits. That way the pulley takes all the grief from the dynamic load and your winch handle remains on the same side. Also, no need to rewind the cable so it spools off the top rather than the bottom. Also, use a chain to wrap around the log, and then clip your cable to the chain. Using the lifting cable as your wrapping cable, and then hooking it back on itself.... just asking for trouble. Plus it wears out your cable much faster. Better to get a nice logging chain for a few bucks, maybe 10' long, and use that to choke on the timber.
Love the builds brother.. That small footprint tractor is pretty stout.. pulls like a little tank..
Need a nose cone to eliminate those snags.. Been thinking of making one from a blue drum with a brush torch a few chains and the tractor tugging a bit..
Mike, I always watch your videos. Just changed my spool gun on my Titainum 200 to work like you did with yours. Great advice. Keep up with the good videos.
Thanks for checking out my videos John ๐
I definitely think you will use your spool gun more with that simple mod ๐
MM77 Approved ๐๐ผ๐๐ผ
For those that don't know, Mike's actually doing CAD. Cardboard Aided Design. ๐
Mike, As always a great video. For dragging logs I use a different setup (yours is great - too) but also use a boat winch. I recommend using a block(s) to increase the power, reduce the stress on the usually light duty boat winch.
Great video Mike, very useful build you did there, those logs are no joke, the log even seems bigger then the tractor ๐๐ for a moment there seemed like you went straight uphill or was it the camera placement? :D Nice lumber btw. Thanks for the update, take care buddy
Great job on that set up. Something else about tractor safety if you have a ROP system on your tractor use it. I see folks on tractors and mowers with the ROP folded down all the time, doesn't work well in the stowed position
