It's great to see one of the greatest minds of our time devoting himself for good. Both in the interview footage and while talking with John, he smiles when saying wither "people can just download the code and add it to old tesla" and "our software is free". He really sounds and seems like a technologic force for good. I'm not his target audience, but I love it that he's doing what he's doing and how he's doing what he's doing.

It's fascinating, I hope more and more people think about innovation this way, as of 2023, still a lot of companies try to keep the old business model, where they sell a new product every 1-3 year with little to no innovation, and as we already have AI tools now, upgradable autopilot feature must be default for new cars and I think any company that doesn't include this feature in base model let's say, should at least add integration ports
I had the comma 2 and it was brilliant! It didn't work on my new telluride, and the kia has a great self driving assist. Good to see you think it's still worth it.

The video is discussing George Hotz, also known as geohot, and his work in developing self-driving car technology. The video covers his background, including his hacking of the iPhone and the PlayStation 3, and his current work on the comma 3x device. The comma 3x is a device that can be installed in a car to enable self-driving capabilities. The video also discusses the potential risks and benefits of artificial intelligence and self-driving cars, as well as the future of the industry.

John man you used to do awesome stories. Why are all your videos becoming ads of companies of your friend group? This was an awesome ad though. Excited about the future.
I have a similar car and wondered how much better Comma is compared to an already decent, if a bit naggy, car stock ACC and LKAS. Apparently much better and worthwhile. Time to save up.
Im not sure what it is but this guy seems primed for a future scandal involving a promise for a product that doest work. Him repeating basically verbatim what sam altman said about ai being a computer revolution rather than a single revolution was eerie and seems like someone trying to copy a certain look of a previously successful person much like how Elisabeth holmes did so copying steve jobs.
Comma AI has drastically improved the quality of my life. Shame that George doesn’t take simple feedback though. I suggested that he make the device in white to prevent overheating. They still sell in black and I’m on my second unit. First one died due to heat.
Pretty much everything in dashboards and steering wheels etc in cars are black because black is a neutral color that helps reduce glare and reflections, which can be dangerous/distracting while driving esp at night. If the device was white it would be lot more likely to see it's reflection on the windshield which is just a no-no for car stuff overall.
Autonomous vehicles, including self-driving taxis, promise a major leap forward in transportation. They're not just about convenience; they could significantly reduce accidents and fatalities with advanced autonomous braking systems. Contrary to concerns about economic impacts, autonomous taxis could thrive within capitalist systems, acting as 'self-operating employees' for their owners. These vehicles can offer round-the-clock service, maximizing utility and efficiency. This would not only enhance accessibility for users but could also decrease the number of cars on the road, leading to lower emissions and less congestion. Economically, autonomous taxis may cut operational costs, like driver wages and accident-related expenses, translating into savings for consumers through lower fares. The shift towards autonomous taxi fleets would demand a significant economic transition, including workforce retraining and infrastructure development. However, the potential for safer, more efficient, and greener transportation makes it a pursuit worth exploring.
Explain how you can connect a device and take over steering, braking and accelerating ? When did this become massively available ? What port does it use ? (OBD2?)
Comma uses mad-in-middle attack/control. It sits between car camera and ECU and sends command to steer and control gas/brakes to your car if there's lane keep assist system in your car. Its still referred to as dev kit which is why it isnt "massively" available. They are pretty well known in tech community and do no marketing. Most people using it know know its limitation as a L2 system (driver MUST ALWAYS PAY ATTENTION)
Its CRAZY how NHTSA will ban Teslas from making a fart sound while in Drive but be perfectly okay with OPEN SOURCE ai software being installed into vehicles and controlling both acceleration and steering. What security measures are in place for people who want to hack commas and use them for evil like targeting pedestrians perhaps? I am all for comma I actually would love to buy one and I think its a genius idea to sell direct to consumers so you can bypass legal compliance stuff but that is also what im afraid of... anyone else?
While I don't think this has any chance of being on par with FSD considering Tesla's NN hardware and dojo, I do really like the free aspect of it. Hell, I do like the idea that I could theoretically do something super illegal like remotely "driving" a car with little intervention to another town. Or adding my own UI on top, or even integrating the thing to whatever home automation / synchronized dance thing I want, as it's already providing the connected car interface on a piece of hardware you properly own and control. That said, I don't really dislike Tesla's AI approach one bit. They have their right to keep their stuff as nipped in the bud as possible while blazing a trail and being the first to normalize your car turning in to a fully automated robotaxi worker when you don't need it. Can't get the kind of numbers they get while being libre. Elon is overly optimistic sure, but that for me is just a good-meaning thing like valve time.
What you folks are talking about as "commaAI" is, in fact, GNU/commaAI, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus commaAI. CommaAI is not an autonomous driving system unto itself, but rather another crucial component of a fully functioning GNU autonomous driving platform made practical by the GNU core components, algorithms, and essential software components that constitute a comprehensive autonomous driving system as defined by the automotive industry standards. Many vehicle manufacturers utilize a modified version of the GNU/commaAI system every day, without realizing it. Through a unique series of developments, the version of the autonomous driving platform that is widely used today is often referred to as "commaAI," and many of its users are unaware that it is essentially the GNU autonomous driving system, developed by the GNU Autonomous Driving Project. There genuinely is a commaAI, and these individuals are implementing it, but it is just one part of the broader system they rely on. CommaAI is the self-driving technology: the software in the system that controls the vehicle's operations and responses to various driving scenarios. This self-driving technology is an essential part of an autonomous driving platform but can't function in isolation. It can only operate within the context of a complete autonomous driving system. CommaAI is commonly used in conjunction with the GNU autonomous driving system: the complete system is essentially GNU with commaAI integrated, or GNU/commaAI. All the so-called "commaAI" implementations are genuinely distributions of GNU/commaAI. Thanks for taking the time to collaborate with me, your friendly GNU+commaAI enthusiast, Richard Stallman

Yeah that's pretty much how it works, but the Comma hardware also taps into the radar systems in supported cars too. Toyota as an example adds safety features as standard even on basic models in the United States. Things like emergency braking, lane keep assist, and smart/adaptive cruise control provide computer control for brakes, steering, and acceleration/radar sensors. I personally ran a Comma unit on a Chevy Bolt EV before I sold the car. It was a very nice system.
@@hjjr31 thanks for this information. Since you have some experience with the system, can you comment on how often you had to make interventions or manual takeover when using the system? This video seems to suggest you can just punch in an address and the car will drive you there with no intervention, which seems to put it ahead of Tesla's FSD system. Is this your experience or have I misinterpreted the video? Also, not sure if you know this at all, but how is a system this compact able to do so much better than Telsa FSD with a tiny fraction of the data and processing power of Tesla's fleet?
The big difference is he's breaking a law that car companies cannot. Full self drive is illegal. Thats why you have to touch the wheel so often on oem vehicles. X3 isnt following that guideline. I think he'd have many more investors if there was no chance that he would get sued--- instead, there is an almost 100% chance that he WILL. Just as Tesla has.
comma is an L2 system. The driver assumes all responsibility of any accidents. The comma device comes with a dashcam software installed which cannot control your car. You have to explicitly install the version that can drive it.
Nah dude - he is a scam artist. That's the common startup business- make sure you have no income until you are ready to sell the company. One small thing- its not going to work the way its explained in the video here. They connect it to OBD2 for communication with the car. Thing is the OBD2 is not designed for continuous use. There is absolutely plethora of stuff that might and is going to go wrong. Its the same reason some legacy companies like ford when they need to update your software for lets say Mach-e car ... they do it overnight. The OBD2 is just not designed for that as well with the amount of data that needs to be transferred today witch bloated car infotainment.
I don't know how you do it, but somehow your videos are just more attention capturing then most others, but without all the bloating and click bait that most UA-camrs use, great vid.
Great intro video. can you do a more deep dive on where/how the 3X trains its AI model and also a demo of it in city traffic? So far this seems more of "a hack" to a car's existing cruise control system versus a bottoms up self driving system. Can you try it on another car brand, one that isn't recommended by the company.
@@emeraldbonsai No, it doesn't. It just sends commands to the CAN bus. Openpilot is still a vision-based system and its vision is from the cameras of Comma devices. That's why it's still Level 2. Level 3 requires environmental awareness so it can do fully autonomous driving. For that Comma devices will require more camera inputs to build a 360° view of the car. Currently, Comma 3x has 360° view of the device only. Recommended cars are recommended because those cars allow more programmatic control (commands through CAN bus) of the car and Openpilot is more compatible with the system of those cars.
He is smart, and I also want an AI girlfriend, but I am not convinced by his technical solution for driving (you need a lot more cameras), neither by the problem he wants to solve (nobody wants or can hack his own car except him). Can you work on the AI girlfriend instead? :D

The OBD2 is just not designed for that as well with the amount of data that needs to be transferred today witch bloated car infotainment.
No harness for either of my vehicles...
This Tech is phenomenal & terrifying @ the same time what Elon Musk should reach out to him again for collaboration or a buy out.
I can't find the app. Please send me a link. Im sold where do I sign.
Someone needs to try a cannonball run with this 😂
I don't know how you do it, but somehow your videos are just more attention capturing then most others, but without all the bloating and click bait that most UA-camrs use, great vid.
A large staff of talented people and writers. I have a history channel and it takes me 3 months to output a five minute video.
The ones that are recommended are because they have egough sensors to be able to do self driving. It just hijacks the sensor outputs
This guy is awesome
