ANNIHILATION of 3 Roman Legions: Teutoburg - Forgotten History
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 чер 2024
- Throughout the history of Rome, from the republic to the age of empire, the Roman Legions were the best conventional fighting force in world history up to the end of the empire in the 5th century AD. However, Rome’s greatest embarrassment occurred in 9 AD in a narrow stretch of wide dense forest when the German tribesmen, often warring with each other, united to defeat a mighty army. From what I’ve read, the Roman soldiers were very superstitious and hated going into unknown forests. I can’t imagine the terror of the women, children, and other civilians traveling with them and seeing such a huge force die by the thousands in front of them leaving them defenseless and at the mercy of the Germans.
To this day, bones and artifacts from that battle still surface after the spring rains. It is a haunting place.
@@roncovegamatic9437 I can believe that., and they were fighting in a storm with mud and blood and torn up ground. It must be truly haunting.
I cannot get enough of this channel! The topics are always fascinating, and explained in great depth, but without filler.
We're glad to have you. Thanks for watching.
Shows how costly having an unfit arrogant commander can be. Varus is a name that has echoed in infamy.
Ive been to the Hermansdenkmal a couple years ago, it is truly impressive.
Thank you. I had to look that up. It looks very impressive. 👍
The rate, quality, and variety of your channel's videos have been excellent lately. Thank you and your team for your thorough work.
Glad you like them!
Kind of non related, but in the opening scene of Gladiator . The Germanic Barbarians are actually chanting Zulu War Chants because the director of Gladiator watched the movie Zulu and liked the way it sounds
You guys are all over the place!! From the history of the CIA to different presidents, and now to Rome!! I love it!!
Thanks for watching, glad you enjoy the variety that we offer.
The Romans had a phrase "Bellum Romanum" litterally Roman War, the way Romans conducted warfare against people they considered to be barbarians. The germanic tribes humbled the Romans in 9 AD. That said Verus was not a gifted comander to say the least, and they underestimated their foes. Vai Victus
It took years to get them back.
Literally bones all over the forest.
Horrific.
Excellent documentary. I visited the Kalkriese varussschlacht museum back in 2019. It was quite something to see. They have archeological diggings still going on there and many areas where they have found relics and evidence of one of the battles. Walking around the fields and forest you can almost hear the yells and swords hitting shields. I plan on going again maybe this summer..
Most historians don't understand that this battle was the most important one in the history of Rome because in the end it confined Roman conquest. This forced Rome to garrisoning a huge frontier and ultimately led to costly battles and incursions that slowly sapped Rome's strength. In the end garrisoning western Germany with 8 legions would been costly, to say the least, but would have been worth it long term. What spelled the end to the Roman empire was conquest for profit. This short term nearsightedness led to it's fall. Marcus Aurelius was (as far as I know ) the only emperor that understood this.
Great documentary. In 2020, I made a trip to the Kalkriese varussschlacht museum. It was a sight to behold. There are numerous locations where archaeologists have discovered artifacts and proof of one of the wars, and these digs are currently ongoing. As you stroll through the woodland and meadows, you can practically hear the clash of blades against each other's shields. Perhaps this summer I will go again.
Rome provides an amazing example of the devolution going on in America right now. Fortunately our battle is essentially economical and ideological, but the possibility of actual combat is becoming a greater possibility every day. The chronology of warfare between the Romans and Germanic peoples is quite an impressive list.
It's all by design

The US downfall has been planned a while, look at the game plan unfold.......
The downfall of the US has been in the play book for a while
Thanks again Colin. I am looking forward to learning what You decide to cover next. Best Wishes to everyone.
Thank you for the very good exposition.
Thank you too!
Hardcore, Sir.
Hardcore.
In WW 2 the Americans did not learn this lesson and followed the Germans into the Hartgen Forest, which became known as "The Meatgrinder" for all the men killed and wounded
Oof, forest and Americans does not work
I remember an old Sergeant giving the advice, "Don't chase natives into the woods."
Great video, Collin! I enjoyed it immensely! Thank you, Collin!
Thank you for yet another great video. I constantly learn from each topic you produce.
My pleasure!
Thanks Collin
Another excellent class! Well done.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Love this story. You guys are hitting them all.
i was in that war but i got sent home cause i dropped my sword on my foot
Lol, me too! Thank God for that. I was gonna go to Canada, but I couldn't get airfare!
Thanks for watching
I saw the whole thing
Great video, on the subject of Roman legions, maybe do a video about the 9th legion that disappeared in Scotland.
Great suggestion!
Alea Iacta Est! The Die was cast when Varus put full trust on Arminius despite the warnings from other Germans of the impending doom that awaited him and his Legions.
The Romas should have remembered their past defeats at the hands of the barbarians! Most notably: the Vae Victis incident.
Brennus (flourished 4th century bc) was the chief of the Senones, who in 390 or 387 bc annihilated a Roman army, occupied and plundered Rome, and exacted a heavy ransom before withdrawing. He is famous for his reputed saying, “Vae victis” (“Woe to the vanquished”).
Another excellent historical fact from the great historian Colin D Heaton!
Many thanks!
Thank you for the content (and your service), roman empire lore is fascinating
Thanks again gentlemen
Our pleasure!
Great video Marine. Can you add a map of the traveling and battles in future videos? Thank you Sir.
Yes, we will try to do that in the future
It reminds me of England's humiliating defeat during the great retreat from Kabul, Afghanistan in 1842. Over 16,000 soldiers and camp followers were killed or captured. A single British surgeon, William Brydon, successfully evaded his pursuers and returned safely to India. It was to be Great Britain's worst battlefield loss until the fall of Singapore 100 years later.
The wording would need to be the British Army, not England.
@@rickyb5499 The Army represents the nation.
Eh, it was the British Army and the East India Company wiped out in 1842 after they left Kabul for Jalalabad and all the civilians. Not an English Army, England in 1842 like today is not an independent nation. That annihilation was not a defeat for one country. P.S. it was not a Great Britain loss, Singapore 1942. It was the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland as from January 1st 1801 with the Acts of the Union 1800. Including the British Empire as India, Australia, Malay States and more were involved, certainly not Great Britain.
Cool tv series called Barbarians loosely based on this. Cool that you used footage from the show. Great work as usual.
Glad you enjoyed it
Would love one on Hannibal's victory at Lake Trasimene!
Thank you for an excellent talk. I am always amazed how much the warriors on both sides fought and killed with weopons like swords, daggers, clubs, bow and arrow. Their strength and endurance was unfathomable.
Now we have guns, missles and other explosive devises which doesn't really take that much strength and endurance except for having to lift these weopons.
As bad and as brutal the ancient peoples were, they did get tired of fighting after a while.
I am so waiting for the era when humanity will figure out that war is so irrelevant and passe. 'Til then, lets decisively destroy evil.
Evil is in the eye of the beholder, so warfare will never end.
@@riclafollette9694 You have a point and it seems like the insanity will never end. We have currently 3 wars in the news and probably 10 of others that nobody seems to care about. Well, this all sounds like we are living in prophetic times. Well, the prophets of Israel speak about wars and destruction that we see today. However, they also speak of world peace and redemption. The harsh prophecies don't have to be fulfill but pleasant ones have to come to fruition.
Another superb historical, incredibly-told eye-opening account. Thank you! SD Stevens, 3 April 2024, 11:40; Minneapolis, MN USA
Thanks for that!
I ❤this channel. True history. Wish they would play this in schools. Excellent ❤❤❤
Awesome 😎 👏🏻
Great episode
Thanks for watching!
Great job brother.
God bless
Thank you and same to you.
sounds like the stormcloaks vs imperials civil war
Acknowledge your tribal chief!!!
It amazes me that Rome could suffer three massive losses vs Hannibal at Trasamine, Trebia, and then the horrific defeat at Cannae, and still keep on fighting.
If we’re covering Roman history, how about doing a show on Queen Zenobia, the leader of the Palmyrene Empire who successfully defended her kingdom from the Sassanian Persians and also captured Egypt, Rome’s main source of grain, making her the greatest threat to the Rome during the reign of Emperor Aurelian.
We will look into that, thank you for the recommendation.
The timeline with Aurelian and her in it would have been a hell of a time to live
In the 5th Century A.D., when the Western Roman Empire was falling apart, descendants of those barbaric Germans drove southward into Italy and eventually sacked Rome itself.
Numidian and Hispanic barbarians, too, on their way to Italy, marauded otherwise exquisite Roman provinces in what today constitutes Aquitaine, Occitanie, Provence, and the Côte-d'Azur.
Fascinating episode. This campaign should be taught at US military academies if it isn't already.
What effect did the assassination of Arminius (Hermann) have on the history of Germany?
It may be argued that his death kept the German tribes fractured, which led to the creation of the independent kingdoms and principalities that lasted until Bismarck
@@FORGOTTENHISTORYCHANNEL Thank you for the answer.
Very well done. Do you have anything on the revolts of Caractacus or Boadica?
Planning on both
It is not a forgotten battle. Idistaviso and Angrivarii wall battles are.
Ahh yes the battle that gave Augustus a stroke 😂😂 “varusss!!! Give me back my legions! “
Thank you for this. I love Roman history! So much for the Pax Romana! lol.
Glad you enjoyed it!
As an Austrian I thank God the Germanic tribes were unconquerable, if the Romans won Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the Netherlands would've lost our Germanic identity, language, and we'd have a similar fate as France which is a „romanized celtic nation" except we'd all be „romanized germanic nations". Great video, subbed
Nothing against your identity. I respect the pride of the German people. Having said that, if the Germatic forces would have been defeated, there is an argument that a guy named Adolf may not have risen to power centuries later. I guess we will never know. Have a great day.
Invincible tribes not really. Also, I don't think the British have lost their identity. If you think about the centuries when Germanic peoples invaded Italy, no identity was lost. You can talk about encounters -clashes.
Fascinating ,,such brutal times but l guess our modern Era isn't much different ..
This story never fails to amaze and your outfit rocks to the 1970s disco era as well
LOL
Wonder what one of those eagles would be worth today if found

Famous battle
did anyone actually carry their sword on their back or is that just on tv
The auxiliaries often did, especially if carrying two swords or a lance
I Love your channel. So much of what you post, I have totally forgotten. I really enjoy and appreciate what you’re are sharing. 👍 Our society would benefit greatly if the school systems would once again teach ‘History’ instead of fabricated nonsense like CRT, LGBTQ & DEI 💩.
Interesting the Germans built supportive camafolged structure throughout the battleground.

Who was briness or how ever u spell his name. He sacked rome he won at the gates of tromopaley. Sorry i cant spell very good. But i know what iam talking about.
The argument has been made that, Rome became less militarized after becoming christian because of the "forgiveness" mindsets.
This battle happened centuries before the empire became Christian
Äÿë
This was good, but please don't use such awful, inaccurate and frankly crap graphics. Watching a shite painting of a Roman soldier in a "300" style helmer with a nasal bar does nothing to help the channel.
what is it with yidtube to flood cheap ai created videos ...get at least an ai that pronouncing english correctly
