Great video! Clarification question did the Legions raised in Spain come from Roman citizens living In Spain or the native population. I usually have these debates with some of my friends. To me, these legions will need to recruit from the local town or region. A logistic nightmare to do otherwise
That's a great question, that a lot of people are actually unsure of. The only restriction to enlist in the legions was that you had to be a Roman citizen. However, this did not mean that "locals" from Roman Provinces could not also be Roman citizens. There were several ways that Roman citizenship was granted, ranging all the way from simply marrying a Roman man, if you were a woman, all the way to serving as an auxiliary in the Roman army, if you are a man. Either way would guarantee citizenship to you and your whole generation after you. This is not mentioning all the Roman citizens that would move to live in the various Roman provinces from Italy. So in any province, there would be a lot of Roman citizens to recruit a legion from. So in a way, you both are right; they had to be Roman citizens, but these also could be descendants of locals from the Province. Thus, resolving the nightmare of logistics.
