How Realistic Is ‘The Last Kingdom’ Actually? | Bamburgh Castle

  • Fans of the Netflix series 'The Last Kingdom' will know all about Uhtred of Bebbanburg, the wandering warrior who fights to regain his lost homeland. But did you know that Bebbanburg was a real place during the Anglo-Saxon period? And it still exists, we just call it Bamburgh Castle in Northumberland. It's a dramatic setting on the rugged coast of north east England, and easily one of the most iconic castles in Britain.
Uhtred was a real person, too, or at least an Uhtred. The so-called Uhtred the Bold ruled Northumbria from Bebbanburg in the early 11th century, and he was the inspiration behind the Bernard Cornwell character. His story is just as fascinating and action-packed as the fictional tale, and his loyalty was constantly tested by Saxon and Danish kings, just as they are in the series.
Join medieval historian Matt Lewis as he untangles the fact from the fiction, unveiling the real history behind The Last Kingdom.

I am Northumbrian born & breed! Northumberland has more castle then any other county in the Uk, with over 70 castle sites. We also have Hadrians wall that was built in 122 AD by the Romans. The wall actually inspired the wall in the game of thrones! It is also the most beautiful county in England, but I am slightly biased!!

Whenever I watch a historical show or movie I always research the actual history, because there's always historical inaccuracies. But, since I'm also working on my family tree, I was thrilled to find that I'm a descendant of the real Uhtred the Bold through his daughter Ealdgyth, he's my 27th great grandfather. Thank you for the tour, I would love to visit Bamburgh someday.

Bamburgh was my favourite holiday spot. Been there swimming with dolphins. But Lindisfarne on Holy Island across the bay is the most magical place you can find. My local Northumberland friend pronounced it as "Bamba" castle and his family were from the farmhouse on the border.

A lot of Bamburgh Castle isn't medieval, ( as in it's been lost) in the In the 17th century, financial difficulties led to the castle deteriorating, but it was restored by various owners during the 18th and 19th centuries. It was finally bought by the Victorian era industrialist William Armstrong, who completed its restoration. The castle still belongs to the Armstrong family and is open to the public.

I visited earlier this year. I'm no history buff so I have to admit - I had no idea how big the castle is!
What I still don't get is why. Sure, it was big and impressive when it needed to be - to repel Viking invaders. But since then? OK, the Normans wanted to impress the locals, so rebuilt it in stone. But who attacked in the 15th century? The Scots? I can't think who else. If it was hit by artillery, who rebuilt it, and why?
The castle is literally across the bay from Lindisfarne. I'd like to know what relevance that had to such a stronghold. Sorry - couldn't give a monkeys about some Netflix show.

Bernard Cornwall has written many books (he has a website), and I think I've read them all, and he has signed some for me.
He does his research, and usually adds a historical note in which he says what is fact, or where he has distorted fact for the sake of the plot. He also tries to use place names accurately, as some have changed over time, although often phonetically relatable.
Not a lot of documents survive from Saxon times, but there are copious records of the Peninsular War, for example.
His books are better than the TV series, but the Netflix series was good, I'll admit.

Being the local ancient royal seat and in my opinion, better in many ways than Alnwick Castle. (Of Percy Hotspur fame.) The link with the iconic industrialist and weapon maker for the empire Lord Armstrong, seals the deal for me. It's an incredible place in summer with the best beaches in britain. Even more so in the depths of winter storms. Providing an atmospheric reminder of the regions turbulent past.

I gave up the vikings tv show after s2 but the last kingdom I finished, even the movie released yesterday. Both shows were historically inaccurate but the last kingdom has a clear protagonist and a clear goal. Vikings was pretty stupid in the later seasons because it was about petty feuds and new characters we did not give any bollocks about.

I visited Bamburgh, it is magnificent. I walked on the beach and back up through the shrubby dunes. I also visited Holy Island, and from there you can just about see Bamburgh across the water.
You mentioned 1464, presumably when Warwick, "the Kingmaker" had been sent up north to deal with the Scots and Margaret of Anjou and Henry VI who was trying to regain his throne from Edward IV. The battle of Hexham happened that year as well.
I loved the series The Last Kingdom but haven't finished watching it all yet. Must do so.

He really gets the details! In Bernard Cornwell's Agincourt book every single name including the main character is from the actual records and were all people who were listed as part of that campaign and battle, he really brings his work to life and is a brilliant author.

Enjoyed this short video , I've been at Bamburgh for the last 2 days , touring the halls of the castle and surrounding area, due to weather I didn't make to the holy island of Lindisfarne, maybe next time. I read the book then watched the series. It's a great story.

I’m sure I read somewhere that the author of the Last Kingdom series was related to Utred the Bold and that is why he decided to write the series of novels. The books are much, much better than the series as is often the case, but I do love the Netflix show as well. I have it on DVD and have watched it through to the end about five times. I’ve read all the books twice! ❤

Good video to watch after getting a platinum in Valhalla, man it was such a great game and yet it's so hated, I sometimes kinda wish that AC Valhalla gets the same amount of appreciation what Call of Duty Black Ops 2 but, it's just not the case. However the series "The Last Kingdom" was the best one on Netflix and I was really enjoying watching your video! 👍

Craziest thing is when you realise how situated it really is to deal with viking raids… like if you’re on Lindisfarne where the vikings first landed you can literally see the fortress across the coast with the naked eye. Not to mention the show using a set rather than the actual location, it’s insane how well the set designers nailed it. My friend and I went just cause it looked scenic (I’m a photographer who’s a history buff) and I was walking around thinking, “something about this place feels familiar” and then I’m like, “Bamburgh… Bebbanburg… wait… is this where it’s based on?” and sure enough. Doesn’t even use the same location, just they nailed the terrain and look so much that it actually captures the familiarity of the actual place.
