Im there my 14 year old self,... laughing for one of my favorite comedians of all time, we gave him a standing ovation when he pulled out his cigar! What an absolute treat
Thanks for posting this here. Most of us Marx fans have heard and/or have the Groucho at Carnegie Hall album but not this concert! Hopefully the full concert will be available for listening.
WOW!!!
The one, the only…
It's mostly great, but there are badly distorted bits. It sounds like it's from a damaged tape.
Yes, it's a rare incomplete tape...beggars can't be choosers.
When one listens to this recording, the question that comes to mind is: what happened to Groucho during the Carnegie Hall concert?? It was about months earlier than this one, and he seemed ten years older.
Actually, "An Evening With Groucho" was edited from three concerts, this one, Carnegie Hall, and one at Iowa State University. Groucho obviously had good days and bad days at this time...not surprising with his age and health. This is discussed in detail in the podcast.
@@dirwuf I know, I'm an avid listener :) Still, there was such a huge difference between San Francisco and what's in the record... Maybe Groucho didn't sleep well the night before the New York concert. Maybe his brain was recovering from the stroke he had had some time before, and by the time he arrived to San Francisco he had some of his powers back. It's so sad to know that the next concert after this one, at the Mark Taper forum, was so disastrous. I feel happy listening to him in this recording: he's clearly slowed down, but seems relaxed and having fun, not struggling.
Erin Fleming probably had one of her tantrums on him before the Masonic performance.
Groucho apparently did one more show in Los Angeles a few months after this one. Unfortunately, he was very ill by that time, and the show did not go well. Nonetheless, it would be a valuable historical document. Anyone know if there are any audio or video recordings of it?
It was taped for broadcast on NBC, but not shown.
It aired on The Comedy Channel in 1990 or 91 - I have a VHS recording of it.
@@chrisr.8277 Could you possibly upload it somewhere? I’ve heard it’s heartbreaking but I’d be curious to see it
@@chrisr.8277 I would like to see it, although it must be painful to watch.
Respectfully, not his best stuff, should be called " Groucho lulls you to sleep"
Nope..I was there, we weren't asleep,
