    Imagine having Groucho Marx as your dad. Arthur probably never had a dull moment in his upbringing

    Fascinating to hear Arthur's perspective on growing up a Marx. I love his detailed memories of his father and uncles. He came by storytelling naturally.

    I appreciate Skip E. Lowe more now than a lot of other interviewers. Not having a live audience allowed them to take their times.

    Arthur Marx seems such a down to earth man, as does Skip. Lovely intimate interview. .Thanks for posting. Never seen either men before but HUGE fan of Grouch & bros!

      He was one of the big inspirations for the character, which was mentioned by Skip's longtime rep Alan Eichler. Originally Skip was quite peeved about it, later he became rather proud of it. Frequently mentioned it in interviews.

    Harpo wasn't "dumb", but he wasn't really literate. He wrote phonetically, and didn't spell well. Example: Playing "Mystery Murder" with Woolcott, everybody knew who it was because he wrote "Ur Ded". But he was a true musician, a warm human, smart where it counted. He was a thinker and he enjoyed other people. His wit and unabashed humor made him a natural for the Algonquin Roundtable. He never held back. Harpo was a delicious person; warm, all love, giving.

    His Dad, Groucho was born in 1890 and The Marx Brothers were traveling the country on the vaudeville circuit in their prime years. Their first big movie was "Coconuts" in 1929, when Groucho was already 39 years old.

    Fantastic video upload. I ordered Arthur's bio on Red Skelton (hard cover) from Amazon used, and rather rare after reading his excellent and revealing biography on Bob Hope. Always wanted to hear the man talk and this is a quality video interview both visually and the content. Opens up a whole new world for those not familiar with Arthur on a personal level. The man can talk as well as write! Enjoyed it.

    Frankly, I don't know how Arthur got through this interview without bopping Lowe on the chin. The guy doesn't shut up and doesn't listen to the answers his subject gave him.
    My mom drank to excess, she and dad would fight, dad would be depressed, and my sister and I wanted to get out of there.
    Was it a happy home?
    Good Lord.

    When Harpo played his harp it was a dream it was
    Well, if someone else can do it how come nobody does?
    Groucho, Groucho, fast as light
    Some talk like him, but not quite
    And when Harpo would play his harp, all was still, still.

    Interesting how, while Groucho and his brothers had very noticeable New York City accents, one can tell that Arthur didn't grow up there, as his accent is much harder to identify. He grew up in California.

    • @xqqqme
      @xqqqme Рік тому

      My father's family moved to CA from KS in 1927 when he was 12. So, not a native (as I am) but well "naturalized." He would often say in regard to U.S. regional accents "You can always spot a Californian because we sound like we're from nowhere."

    Arthur just gets though telling Lowe that his dad was tired and depressed because of his wife's alcohol problems, and her wanting to always go out on the town and Grouch preferring a sedentary life, and then the Skipper looks at Arthur and says "Was it a happy house"??/ are you kidding me Skipper??...its like a line from a Marx Bros movie...quite obvious that the Skipper wasn't even listening....who the hell is the skipper anyway????

      daniel lack Some "interviewers" just do not know when to be quiet and listen to the answer to the question they or their scriptwriter has written. It is as if they thi nk people want to listen to them rather than their guest. As an Englishman I have not heard of this interviewer but I have heard to much of him already.

    • @smurf902
      @smurf902 8 місяців тому

      No it's not. "Long Island" is Nassau and Suffolk. But Brooklyn, Queens along with Nassau and Suffolk are all located physically on Long Island, so Queens is technically "on" long Island because it's the same land mass. Just not politically part of Nassau or Suffolk county.
