  • A deep dive into Maxine Marx’s 1980 biography of her father, “Growing Up With Chico”.
Matthew and Noah discuss the book’s honesty in taking on Chico’s self-centered lifestyle, while also portraying him in a sympathetic and loving manner. They point out discrepancies in anecdotes told by Maxine as compared to other sources, and are surprised by her willingness to express raw feelings about the rest of the family.
Mostly though, the guys enjoy the details that help fill in the cracks of the story of the most interesting, yet elusive brother.

Regarding Chico's musical literacy, we know that he worked for a music publisher in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh before his vaudeville career. He sold sheet music at a time when recordings were still relatively rare. To sell sheet music he had to be able to demonstrate it. Unlike a song plugger who only needed to learn a repertoire of songs to sell, a music store salesman had to be able to give a good performance of any piece of music that a customer pulled off the shelf at sight.
We also know that Chico sold a few songs that he wrote himself during that period, one of which Edison chose to record.

Bought and read this book a couple years ago and I really enjoyed it. Loaned it to my uncle who's reading it for a second time and has hinted I may need to find a replacement copy for myself. I found the book to be helpful in filling in a few pieces about Chico that we don't get anywhere else. But it really left me wanting more.
My Marx Brothers journey began with looking up Groucho quotes. Which transitioned to who is Harpo and why does he seem so adorable and happy go lucky? Which has moved on to Chico and who he really was. The lack of first hand information about Chico is the biggest draw.

From my very first viewing of a Marx Brothers movie, "Go West", it was Chico that my heart went to, and my interest as well as sympathy for him has grown over the many years.

Chico reminds me of a mix of Harvey Keitel and Steve Van Zandt.

Zeppo's first wife, Marion, was Jewish. Indeed, she was Betty's cousin.

The only thing I really needed from Chico was the aviator speech from A Night At The Opera. He turned stereotyping into an art form.

Chico was a lady's man. How did that happen? I don't get it. He wasn't much to look at.
