People experiencing it first hand would have seen it much more clearly. I'm guessing they couldn't fit both in the same shot without it looking terrible, especially with all the distractions in the background.
The real experiment is when there is a high stakes scenario. A game won't uncover/amplify that behaviour as much as when you are dealing with a situation where stakes are high eg your survival, lot of money is at stake, safety of you or someone you love etc. It would also be interesting to study this phenomenon with respect to age, gender, nationality, education.
