    I had a scenario where I was the odd man out; it was during a naval exercise. I was the only radar operator to correctly understand what was happening during a simulated night combat. Command zoned on an unconnected radar contact; they thought it was our adversary. I was tracking our adversary, and made no bones about it. Command ignored me, and we were attacked and sunk in the very manner I predicted by the very contact I was tracking. To be a non-conformist in that situation only made things worse for me - I was told I was going to be charged for insubordination before the simulated attack. Making my Division Officer look bad did me no favours going forward. You'd think I'd have gotten an 'attaboy' - but no. I was written up as insubordinate anyways.

      which is partly responsible for my honorable medical discharge. i look at them and lament as i think “welcome to atheism and the democrat party all you peer pressure conforming drones.” Thinking for one’s self is highly discouraged and downtrodden in the modern military hierarchy. I am much happier being an Alpha male protecting everyone as opposed to being an uninformed grunt blindly following the orders ignorant orders of those who couldn’t pour last night’s beer out of non osha approved color exposing feminine footwear fully equipped with detailed plans of engagement sans cryptography on the rear elivatory pillar.

      I totally understand that. It is frustrating. Wasn't there anything you could have done or said in your defense? It is hard, if not near impossible, to contradict your group or some authority figure. But I just look back at Germany in WW2 to know that sometimes YOU MUST, cost it whatever it will. Sorry it cost you, but kudos to you for sticking to your guns.

      It would seem that sometimes the facts can be so bad that it is best to ignore them and re-write the history. eg Winston Churchill: the Gallipoli campaign was his idea, 120,000 allied deaths. Making a stand at Singapore was at his insistence and another 80,000 troops killed or captured. Not a good record for a heroic war time leader. OR, the My Lai massacre Lt William Calley was fêted as an after dinner speaker, the the man who stopped the killing was not recognized as a hero.

    It's only when you have a strong opinion and can firmly stand on your own ground that you can tacle peer pressure. For someone who might be a bit insecure it's not easy. You do concider what "price" you have to pay for telling the truth.

    The "reviews" technique in online markets is a real life application of this. Even if one had different perception of a product, when they read the reviews that speak more of the opposite perception, it will likely change their original perception.

    Many other experiments confirm the conclusions of Asche. Would seem to me that going along with the group is mostly a fear of standing up for what you see, but because perhaps there is some survival mechanism at work whereby even though they know they are not being honest, their survival in general is more guaranteed by being in line with the majority, that the impulse to survive outweighs the temporary dishonesty to self. Herd animals always go with the herd if possible as there is more safety in numbers vs being out there alone.

      I think there's some lack of confidence in some cases you've got to be very sure of yourself to go against the crowd.

    • @sixjhontongalamar979
      @sixjhontongalamar979 Рік тому +3

      @@EmoBearRights In my opinion, it's indeed lack of confidence but also the capability to actually go against the crowd. If you're not that good at it, you'll be disregarded by the crowd or the crowd, as a whole, would go against you. If you are good enough to influence some, the crowd would be in chaos and left in confusion, while you are still at risk for starting it.
      So I think that it isn't much about what is right or wrong for you, but what is right to be done for you and the crowd. Unless you could deal with the crowd completely and the best result for you is ensured (whatever the "best result" is for you), it is much safer to go with the crowd instead of against.

    Conformity for me has not been an issue because I have always been sort of a loner. I remember in the 5th grade, there was this extremely poor girl named "Tonya" who was mercilessly picked on. She had lice and old clothes, etc.. I never participated in the bullying but I never really stopped it. One day a group of girls including myself were in the bathroom and Tonya walked in to use the bathroom. Tonya accidently tucked her dress in her panties. The other girls snickered and refused to tell her. I was the only girl to stand up and tell her "Hey your dress is tucked in your underwear" Tonya said thanks walked out the bathroom. After she left these 6 girls stared at me with hatred and told me I was stupid for telling her and then refused to talk to me for a week. These girls wanted me to apologize to them. Me not giving a dang what they thought was like "yeah, that is not happening" From that day I knew I was different, I said that if it feels wrong to me, it probably is wrong. I question everything and even if it makes me uncomfortable, I go against the grain. I am in an office full of religious zealots who have group think behavior. All of them agree that life starts at conception and that in cases of r@pe or incest a woman should still have the baby. I can assure you that must of these women don't believe and agree with most of the extreme abortion rhetoric and probably had a few abortions themselves but the need to fit in is greater than standing up for what they truly believe.

    I think overall it is important for us as parents/educators, to share our life experiences with children/students,. Things that involve us sticking to the truth and also when we haven't, and may have conformed under certain circumstances. This gives them a chance to learn/understand that there are all sorts of possibilities they are not yet aware of. As this clip perfectly displays.

And I'm stubborn to a fault, the more aggressive a group or individual becomes, the more I look down on them for using such a primitive form of persuasion, so it gets easier. Not sure why this is.

      A lot of cult recruiters found that their richest hunting grounds for recruits were University campuses. Universities are full of smart people with not an over abundance of good sense (due to lack of life experiences), which tends to make them rather vulnerable to smart operators.
      As to your statement, agreed. They are the people still looking for their way upwards, where upper classes are already there and more likely to be leading the way (Alphas).
      Many of the lower level people have simply given up on moving upwards and are just busy surviving. However they are more prone to the lower level get rich quick schemes like a sure bet on the horses or poker machines.

    I am usually not the one confirming. My parents follow Jainism and I was always told that it was a true perception of the universe but I always struggled to agree as their teachings were opposite of what I was being told in science books and shows. Finally I just looked at the evidence and concluded that while containing some facts, most of the teachings of Jainism is false and is not based on any empirical evidence. That day I became an agnostic atheist. Apart from this, I am a creative professional which is another thing that most people in India do not recommend as a career option. So I will conclude that while I listen to others' opinion, I follow my own mind.

    I see this with a "zipper" traffic pattern situation. When the primary lane was switched, it seemed a stupid idea so I analyzed why they did that and realized it was so that it would prompt people to use both lanes. Everyone switched to going single file in the other lane. Wanting to make sure I wasn't wrong, I checked out DOT websites. They are excellent and confirmed my thoughts. I only used the empty lane and maybe had 1 or 2 others join me. I was sure others would start figuring it out but months later they were still single file. Sure of change when it became so blatently obvious how stupid it was for everyone to go single file, it's more than a couple years now. I am amazed. It's a long line, blocking people from a turn lane, and getting in the way or switching lanes back and forth at 2 intersections before. This video makes me wonder how many people see the absurdity of it but don't want to join us mavericks that cruise past all the cars that passed us earlier.

    Is this why people in my region refer to a chicken noodle stew as "pot pie?" I've gotten a lot of flack for calling it "chicken stew." People have all kinds of rationalizations as to why we should continue calling it "pot pie" and why I am wrong for favouring "chicken stew" in my own speech. Surprisingly, these arguments are seldom "we do it out of tradition," which is honestly the only rational argument in the case of this linguistic kerfuffle. (In my own, humble opinion, at least.) What's more strange to me is the fire and vitriol with which so many people fight for this hill. We have bigger fish to fry, people! Let me call it chicken stew!

    I'm not a conformist, I'm a contrarian and an antagonist. The more people that agreed on the wrong answer, the more excited I would be to disagree with them. In fact, the more people agreed on the _right_ answer, the more I would want to examine the other, wrong answers to make sure they're really wrong. I love being the lone dissenting voice in the crowd that turns out to be right. I basically think I'm better than everyone else.

    I saw this happen in tiktok. The Hailey hate that is happening where people post "evidence" that Hailey is obsessed with Selena is getting out of hand that even if their so called "evidence" is made up, people still hated on Hailey even though they were not a fan of Selena or Justin. As of now, "evidence" of Selena's past posts were showing up specifically those where she seemed to be a bad person. For me, no one is completely innocent but none of them also deserves the hate because they are both women who Justin Bieber fell in love with (including Selena being his ex and Hailey being his wife). People are bored and obsessed on the lives of others but what can I say. They are celebrities.

    • @Fred-ff6bv
      @Fred-ff6bv 2 роки тому +1

      @@daniels5709 i understand others prospectives and motivations very well just as this video explains. most people are motivated by self centric needs and wants rather than doing what is right. to use an extreme example, if a building was burning and someone’s dog and their enemy were both in the building, most people would try to save their dog before their enemy. there’s a conditioned flaw carried by the majority of the people in the united states and many other countries to follow their emotions (what they feel is right) rather than having a clear understanding of the unambiguous knowledge of what is actually right and wrong (good and evil if you will) to go with the crowd even though you know that the crowd is wrong is bad. it makes one a liar and a hypocrite. so the right action in my giving scenario is to save the human over the dog even if the human is your enemy and the dog is your favorite worth ridiculous amounts of money. and for the record, i’m not a pessimist, i am a very optimistic realist.
