If we go against the crowd and are right, we are seldom rewarded. If wrong, often punished.
If we go with the crowd and are right, we squeek by unnoticed. If wrong, we can blame others.
Certainly such behaviour leads to worse results for the whole, but for the individual it is rational for social self-preservation.
Thus, a corrective measure is in order. We as the members of society have the opportunity to praise those who reason themselves into going against the crowd.

Thanks for sharing your insights on this! Isn't that one of the fascinating parts about this notion of rationality? That in a certain light (in this case, social self-preservation) the behavior which has been deemed irrational actually becomes rational. Hope you enjoyed the video and thanks for watching!

@@intermittentdiversion Hey, thanks for the personal response! It _is_ fascinating and reminds me of the parallel concepts of right/wrong & good/evil. I attempt to take The Chinese Farmer's philosophy on such things. I'll quote it below for those who haven't heard it.
This version was penned by Dennis Adsit:
There is a Taoist story of an old farmer who had worked his crops for many years. One day his horse ran away. Upon hearing the news, his neighbors came to visit. “Such bad luck,” they said sympathetically.
      “Maybe,” the farmer replied.

The next morning the horse returned, bringing with it three other wild horses. “How wonderful,” the neighbors exclaimed.

      “Maybe,” replied the old man.

The following day, his son tried to ride one of the untamed horses, was thrown, and broke his leg. The neighbors again came to offer their sympathy for what they called his “misfortune.”

      “Maybe,” answered the farmer.

The day after, military officials came to the village to draft young men into the army. Seeing that the son's leg was broken, they passed him by. The neighbors congratulated the farmer on how well things had turned out.

      “Maybe,” said the farmer.

@@RubelliteFae Thanks for sharing this story! I love the duality of mental frameworks like these.
Since we're sharing quotes on the idea, here's one from one of my favorite novels All The King's Men by Robert Penn Warren:
"But if anything is certain it is that no story is ever over, for the story which we think is over is only a chapter in a story which will not be over, and it isn't the game that is over, it is just an inning, and that game has a lot more than nine innings. When the game stops it will be called on account of darkness. But it is a long day."

      @RubelliteFae 4 роки тому +4

@@intermittentdiversion That reminds me of a concept that may be a bit cumbersome to explain, but I'll have a go.
Humanity has been telling stories since long before civilization. For a storyteller, sitting around a fire at night, the sky is their canvass and the audience's imagination is their paints. We've been thinking in terms of stories for so long, that we don't always realize we're constantly telling ourselves the story in which oneself is the main character.
But, I don't think of the me of 10 years ago as the same me as now. And I certainly hope I'm a "better" me in future. So, really these are a succession of stories.
Now here's the fun bit. In Ancient Greek theatre a story which started off sad and got better was called a comedy and the reverse was called tragedy. We've all had times of terrible suffering and times of joy. So, we oscillate between the two. Thus, your entire outlook in life is up to you. Do you want it to be a series of stories that start well and end horribly, or would you rather tell yourself that each one started awful and became pleasant?
The idea that one's life is a story is so ingrained that we often don't realize it's completely in our power to decide if we prefer comedies or tragedies. And switching from one perspective to the other can have dramatic effects on the specific content of one's future stories.
Sorry these comments are so long.

@@RubelliteFae no worries on the long comments-there's lots of food for thought in them. Thanks for sharing. I believe the author Michael Lewis touches on a similar subject when he says: "As I’ve gotten older-I would say starting in my mid-to-late 20s-I could not help but notice the effect on people of the stories they told about themselves. If you listen to people, if you just sit and listen, you’ll find that there are patterns in the way they talk about themselves.
There’s the kind of person who is always the victim in any story that they tell. Always on the receiving end of some injustice. There's the person who’s always kind of the hero of every story they tell. There's the smart person; they delivered the clever put down there.
There are lots of versions of this, and you’ve got to be very careful about how you tell these stories because it starts to become you. You are-in the way you craft your narrative-kind of crafting your character. And so I did at some point decide, “I am going to adopt self-consciously as my narrative, that I’m the happiest person anybody knows.” And it is amazing how happy-inducing it is."

    Please know this:
Herd mentality is contagious and is everywhere. People get easily caught up and this makes it difficult in the long run to differentiate your own thoughts from those that is imposed on to you.
You have to be vigilant and that sometimes requires you to go hermit mode as an extreme result.
Herd mentality keeps you bound to an echo chamber and it’s easier to manipulate because it breeds fear.
Herd mentality also is imposed since the day you born and will be till the day you die.
    It’s everywhere:
    Schools, TV, phone, advertising etc
Individuality is so important especially NOW more than ever. Look around- everyone’s doing the same shxt.
When you’ve been bound to herd mentality you become a prisoner of it and start becoming committed to its way of being because it’s comfortable, any individualism becomes a threat- this is furtherest from the truth, everyone single person here is unique in their own right, people need to bring that side out of others rather than fighting constantly.
You can’t expect everything to change around you if you have a fixed and rigid mindset.
People are so afraid of being alone because then they’ll have to face themselves, and that’s the biggest obstacle in one’s life, mastering yourself. So, they’ll just stick to herd mindset because it’s easier and safe.

In reality, both groups will exercise a form of mob mentality, the only way to avoid it is to not subscribe yourself to any group but instead interact with all ideas at an arms length.

The example shown is great. That's why I think the best way to open a new store is to secretly pay people to come to your store. This is the most cost-efficient way to advertise your store. Once you already have a bunch of people planted there, all you need to do is let the FOMO kick in and people will start queuing up just because they saw others queuing already.

Their "argument" being: "From so many people somebody would know if it was trick, and since nobody is talking against it, it must be because its true, not false. So its right to follow the heard."
This is, as the video states, is to alleviate the fear of unknown, but also in the direction of economy - to spend as little (effort, time, energy, attention, etc) as possible, because people are beings with very limited energy levels, and we want to save as much as possible, even ironically, at the detriment of our safety.

You proclaim yourself as a "Sigma" male and yet have the nerve to say you are not a part of the herd? What irony.

Great video but you missed a major factor, oxytocin! The reason why neurotypicals are so susceptible to herd mentality is because of the feel good neurochemical response to social engagement, conforming reduces distress & builds a system of trust.
Becoming more aware of decision making via data analysis is fine, but this way of thinking is only favoured in certain neurotypes ie. ASD. In the end we all base our decisions on feelings (neurochemical responses), so it is very important to understand the significance of oxytocin in herd mentality & understand neurotypes, specifically if we want to lower the likelihood of narcissistic & psychopathic leaders as they are usually the ones with the most “charisma” which to the NT represents confidence & certainty therefore building trust irrespective of said leaders intentions.

I’ve always related the herd mentality to this simple analogy: if you woke one day to find civilization unstable & people roam around in a crazed state yet you & very few people were “normal”
    Whose really crazy?

Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.
    Matthew 7:13-14
Follow Jesus! Our true Lord and savior. The true Sheppered of the Sheep. The one who died for your sins and your true salvation to Eternal Life. The one who heals broken people. A Lord that wants to serve you and love you. who hears you and knows your pain.
Repent, For the Kingdom is at hand. And the day will come where God will judge us according to our sins. Those who believe in His son and in His word will be saved.
    If you have eyes, see.
    If you have ears, hear.
For the devil will decieve you and tell you this is not true.

If you make wrong choice together with majority, it is not much worse compared to the average.
If you make wrong choice together with minority, it is much worse compared to the average.
If you don't have any data beforehand, or you are lazy to think, it is safer to go with the majority.
If you do have data beforehand, and you can be certain which choice is better, you go with your choice.

Disagree is a question of opnion. But when you see better evidence and logic in a group but follows the other group that has debunked proofs just because they are a big majority is herd mentality. "All these people couldn't be wrong". You see ONE person making more sense than thousands but you think "But HE must be wrong, he's in the minority".
