The way Gable made that handshake without looking at 1:43 really demonstrated his athletic prowess.

I’m waiting for armchair experts to bring up how an Olympic gold medalist is wrong for reaching with the same hand as his lead foot.
I’m going to play this video for the dad of one of my son’s wrestling teammates. We had a debate about this the other day (him - basic high school wrestling;, me - two time state placer and mediocre D1 collegiate wrestler).
I stated that reaching with the same hand is ok so long as you understand the potential opening you provide your opponent. He stated no high level wrestlers reach with their front hand.
My new response- exhibit a) This video.

Sorry, don't know much about wrestling, but what's the opening you're giving him by doing that?

@@jameldean4212 standard wrestling principle is to not provide “windows” (spaces underneath the arm / elbow) to expose either a leg attack or body lock.
By reaching high with the same side hand as the lead foot, one potentially opens themselves to an opponent posting below the lead arm elbow and taking a shot to the lead leg - either head inside single or head outside with a quick transition to double leg.
The post on the lead arm can also transition to a undertook on the same side, while stepping around the front leg (keeping hips lower than the opponent’s hips ) with your leg and going to a body lock.
Therefore, the normal rule is to reach high with hand on the rear leg side, while keeping the front side hand low to protect the front leg.
Personally, my rule of thumb is to try to make contact with the forehead first and keep the arms “short”. At the same time, I don’t mind reach with the front hand if I keep the elbow bent and low (ready to drop my level and use the forearm / elbow to block an “open window” attack.

Gable's left handed takedown style is super super handy for jui jitsu because he can get guys onto the matt without ending up deep on a right side guillotine. this is why I hope he transitions into mma eventually

well, really what would prevent him and Jordan Burroughs from getting guillotined is their perfect technique. No wrestler should be getting guillotined because their head should be high or in the opponent's chest. However, most wrestlers are lazy with this detail because they are not immediately punished for it in wrestling like they are in BJJ. But that's why these guys are Olympic Champions.
