I am 64 and have been making this cake since I was 14. It was my mom’s favorite and my husband will eat the whole cake in 24 hours. The major difference is my recipe calls for a box of yellow cake mix!!!! Everything else is pretty much the same. I will definitely be trying this recipe to see what the difference is. I love everything Preppy Kitchen does so I am sure his recipe is better.

An FYI: if you decide at the last minute to bake x y or z ( lol ) and for whatever heaven sent reason you already have room temp butter but your eggs are still in the fridge don’t despair. Just take out the needed number of eggs, grab a bowl and after carefully putting the eggs in it, cover w hot but not scalding temp water. By the time you get all your ingredients that you need for said baking project out on the counter or table top, your eggs are at a perfect temperature! I was so excited to see that you were making a “Sock it to me” cake. My mom made them when I was growing up. “sock it to me” is slang from the 70’s I think. It means like...”give it to me good,” or “hit me with whatever you’re trying to say straight no chaser.” So the Sock it to me cake really puts flavor on you....it’s so good! To “sock” someone meant to hit them.

Sock It To Me Cake was always a favorite in my house as a kid. If I remember correctly, my mother got the recipe off the back of a box cake. I was reminded about it a couple of years ago and that sent me on a search. After trying two from-scratch recipes, I was bummed. No, no, no! AND THEN...I landed on Preppy Kitchen. This cake is FANTASTIC and one that is frequently requested by my friends and Hubster. It's easy, forgiving, moist, and oh-so DELICIOUS!! I love adding toasted pecans to the top after all that glorious glaze. YUM!
John, since finding you, you are my go-to guy for recipes. I fell in love with your first cookbook and cannot WAIT to get my hands on the new one! Thank you for being a part of my kitchen!

I wonder why you always use what looks like a store bought extract of vanilla. Here in the UK we can get these incrediblly thick and fragrant vanilla pods from Zazou's vanilla empoium. I am not affiliated. I love their vanilla from Tahiti, thick and moist and have so many grains inside. I dare John to look them up and start using those instead. I have made homemade vanilla sugar and extract where I combined empty vanilla pods of the kind I mention above and vodka. Yum. For the vanilla sugar I use goden icing sugar. One caveat: you have to be able to add magnesiumsterate to the sugar or it will clump together. That's mine right now.
Oh, the longer and the more pods you add, the stronger vanilla flavout

Hi John, I am a novice at baking. I made this sock it to me cake following your recipe except I discovered, on Christmas morning, that I only had "self-rising" flour. Therefore I omitted baking powder and salt from my batter. The cake was a hit with my family - they loved the texture and taste. Is there any reason that I should switch to all-purpose flour next time? Thanks for your easy to follow recipes.
