The problem is all mercenaries should be viable in their own way. Act 1 Merc should be able to do enough damage, set enemies on fire with fire arrows, chill them or freeze them with her cold arrows. Act 3 merc should cast a wider range of spells that do adequate damage. How the act 2 merc stayed on top for so long with no balance changes to change that is silly.
@@hebirokku Infinity and insight are two major pros to the a2. Insight being made In bows is cool now... but still not the tank or killer like the a2 merc.. so it's still gonna be pretty hard to compete with a2.. but they are getting there
no innate auras makes them pretty much unusable. as well as holy freeze being an option on A2 which is broken. private mods added other auras to all mercenaries and improved AI and gave them new abilities and still had to remove holy freeze from a2 mercs for there to be any reason to use anything else
Because prior to the remaster Diablo 2 didn't get any real game updates since 2011? Not counting the compatibility patch for newer OS and PCs in the 1.14 set of patches in 2016.
Actually witnessed an Act 1 merc doing way more than a barbarian in nm, it was actually insane the a,ount of damage the act 1 merc can do given your tanking hits.

@@Wolvercom The gear he used for the budget setup is very easy to get, and there's many items you can swap out for other items to make it as good as this. It would probably take a few days solo self found to make him get as strong as this with similar gear (if you know how to farm efficiently) but even if you're a noob it shouldn't take that long to obtain equivalent gear .
@@ttuarmyjag84 If you're playing offline it's easy to find highrunes. Just pump the /player count and click on super chests. Most online players will never see a highrune, however.

@@lolwhatidk You say it like everyone can get a Lo rune but in reality you need quite a few hours of grinding before finding Lo rune or just a high rune in general. And some people just don't have the time for it.

Took them 20 years, but they finally implemented a second act 5 merc. I had thought for years that blizzard could add a dual wield barb merc. The sprite work was walking around outside of town the whole time.
An Azurewrath in his Offhand was my first thought, Sanctuary makes them Undead perish away and also enables Leech-ability! This Merc and the Throw-Barb Upgrades will guarantee many Funny Hours at least for my poor Soul... damn who ever thought i would see an HD-Diablo that also got some "Balance" as it should be.

This is one of the more exciting things in this patch. Finally a competitive pick for the mercenary! I don’t think he’s OP though. The last wish makes him almost unkillable because of the LT but otherwise I’m very happy with this. I’ll be running my double throw/frenzy barb, summon necro, and fist Pally with this now. Stoked!
@@MrJacqques optimally yes it would be but I also usually build my summon necro with a poison hybrid using CE and curses to supplement of course. This is something fresh and new to try, and I think using amp dmg or decrepify with this merc would be devastating so I’ll have fun with it. I like how tanky it is too compared to the Act 2 merc.
Frenzy is actually a skill that fit merc very well. When the player is using frenzy and run like a mad man... it's fun and all, but it gets hard to control at times. Going from target to target is often not smooth. However, merc doesn't have this issue. He just run around like mad man... target to target without hesitation. I love it.

(left click on the ground...hold left click and hovering it on enemy or near enemy) I remember see other people doing that (in pd2 or something... I don't remember). I tried to learn it by googling it and I remember it can't be done in vanilla.

It's one of the reasons I like the barbarian so much for main. I have my map as the wheel button, when I click down, escape as my upper left side, weapon swap as my lower left side button, inventory as my upper right side button, and toggle show items as my lower right side button. With a maxed BO giving me massive life and drac's grasp equipped for good leech on the lifetap proc vs large packs I can basically play one handed with just my mouse. I don't usually need any pots. Berserk on the index button and Frenzy on the middle finger, keep frenzy depressed without a target and point yourself in the direction of whatever you want to kill. Be mindful of anything staying up too long, usually means phys immune, berserk real quick and carry on. A pair of griefs main handed, a pair of hotos on the offhand for shout skills and fcr for enigma tele speed. I usually tele to chaos and clear through in about 2 mins a run. I prefer killing over seal popping. Gotta be careful at lord de sies though, that fanaticism aura is tricky with an amp curse and the wrong minion buff, like extra fast.

First people can buy their currency for real money there so it's basically buying items with extra steps and secondly the page originated from the botting community to sell their botted items there and a lot of their users bot to this day so I wouldn't want to supply those people with a bigger user base and potential market

Act 3 merc was my favorite years ago just because of his design and attack style, but dude is extremely weak though. He can't even block with a shield equipped which makes no sense and they didn't even fix that. He needs a serious upgrade
I think this barb is actually good enough so it could deal with elemental immunes. For going through the game with fire or cold characters, for those of us who hate skipping monsters. I hope they don't nerf him.

seems like a great companion for a trap assassin or something that doesn't need the meditation aura or a sorc not using a super mana-heavy build (like an orb sorc)
Sazabi's set was also buffed and is great for this one, add some nice proccs or auras such as by using a Lawbringer for example on the off hand, cheap but super effective!
I hope they dont nerf him. Hes actually viable, if they nerfed him really...at all he wouldn't be worth it, but as he is hes a good alternative. Hes real good with insane endgame gear on, but he SHOULD BE. We have a tendency to forget that this one mercenary would be months of farming daily to equip like this. Id like to see them do this to the other two, make the archer and the sorc viable damage dealers. They need some ai adjustments I think...to make them try to stay at range, and a lot more dps since they're not tanks. Id almost like to see the paladin merc get a survivability buff, that way we can pick from 2 dps or 2 tanks. Itd really make for an expansion on the styles of play we have to enjoy.
I personally disagree on only single point, not every merc should be top DD. I totally fine if 2 and 5 will be for tank/damage thing, and 1 and 3 more for support/CC. 1 is okay atm, does not need crazy buffs, maybe more res for example for her? dunno. But act 3 still need much much more love. Something to sustain, something to not die in 1/4 second. ai adjustments - agree, but, it's an old game, ai code probably is a total mess already and I suspect devs won't touch it for a while...
When I first started playing I looked forward to the act5 merc because it said barbarian...I was sure that he had to dual wield and be a brother barbarian next to me.What a disappointment it was when I tried him for the first time...and now this is fixed, finally! He doesn't need a nerf. The Act 1 and 3 mercs need to brought up to this level. Act 1 changes have been on the right track... Act 3 seems like it's going to take a while.
They should allow the Barbarian to hire two of these guys( one frenzy the other bash). That would be insanely fun and up the barb substantially. PS I love heathLOAF he is as healthy as a heath bar. I cannot wait to play this new update!

Dual wield should make many builds viable. Pair lawbringer/azurewrath with doombringer (+% life, solid damage, cheap) and you get a hefty magic damage dealing tank. Heck, give him Bul-Kathos' Children! This patch might truly resurrect D2 experience for me. The fun and excitement of finding new gear to replace old, both not necessarily meta-grade, but giving the feel of progress. Now not only for main char, but also for a5 merc. Memories enhanced :)

I really appreciate this new addition and changes, though, there should be one more option for Act 5 merc. All other Acts have at least 3 options and Act 2 even has 6 so I don't see why there are only 2 options for Act 5 merc. Maybe the other one could be Berserk/Whirlwind.
True. Typicall Mr.Llama video, putting 500 HRs in just the Merc. As if everyone could afford it and not just the 0,1% players. To see what a Merc with gear value of about a few UMs can do would be much more interesting for most of the players.
he's more than perfect with low gear, throw him lawbringer/unbending will/duress/gface and he can help u a alot in Chaos and worldstone keep, the AI and movement speed from frenzy make him more aggessive and more helpful, it go really well with some budget build like windy druid/ FOH/ throw barb or physical bowazon. Don't like the stupid act 2 merc we just spend all the time to wait him for some extra dmg from might aura-which sometime be unactived
Right. Merc is soo good, all he has in 2 of the best weapons in the entire game, the best chest for a merc and the best barb helm. Nothing too good....
So as a Blizzard Sorc that uses the Act 2 might Merc ( the standard cookie cutter build) should I now switch to this guy? Hell is tough with all the cold immunes so I’m thinking this guy would help me more than mine.
It has probably been done, and probably with no gear on character, no charms, /players8, full clears, no replaying areas, only the merc without restrictions. On hardcore. I've seen MUCH worse self-imposed restrictions beat the game.
Act 3 Merc are Sorcerers not palas tho, even if they did and get access to an ETH Exile shield they will still die the second a mob farts on their way, problem with em is they can't leech life back since they no melee like others and this game has no healer class or skills ( well pala, but meh ) .
The act 3 mercs are sorcerers, and the act 2 mercs are skilled in the holy auras. It would make more sense to me that an act 2 merc could weild a paladin shield if they could use 1 handed weapons. But I see where you are going, and I agree!

I've been playing since a week after d2r came out about 10 hours per week (sometimes more) and have never found anything higher than Mal (I hellforged an ist on one character and cubed up another so I could make a gul rune). Ber feels literally impossible.
Lawbringer seems really good on the merc to support a physical character. Sanctuary aura would remove physical immunity from all undead (most physical immune are undead), and it would also provide decrepify for increased physical damage.
@@asbjrnfossmo1589 It looks pretty strong honestly, but that might be what Blizzard wants with them being a Barbarian and all that and them being strong in fantasy, we’ll just have to see how it all shakes out.
Probably will use this instead of Act2 for FoH or any spell-based build that doesn't really need the merc auras or insight (that is, spells with casting delays). Double Azurewraths are probably pretty good now that they've fixed the sanctuary bug. If anything else G-face and duress will be great to apply crushing blow repetitively on bosses on chars who do not fight physically and have no static field.
Why u keep testing characters with very high price end game gear, like only 5% of people will even reach that in a ladder season, or unless they buy from web…..
A2 merc: the noble protector, supporting you and helping you, keeping you alive and can even use deadly force if needed. long tradition of spiritual aura training and its an honor for him to be on your side. A5 merc: see enemy, kill enemy!!!
Faith necro with decrepify/life tap etc. Or with Golems. Id love to summon all 3 types of golems at once. This would look cool with this a5 frenzy merc :D
My only comment on this is that I want them to balance all mercs to be reasonably viable. Especially if they could do it in a way where which merc you chose depended more on which class and/or build you played yourself rather than just "act 2 merc is the only viable option"! What I am saying: Please don't nerf the barb. Buff the others to be in line in their own ways. The more builds that become viable the better. They don't have to replace the currently best builds as the best builds, but they should be brought closer to it.
I think that is the cool thing. Duel wielding he has lots of options and if your rich giving him crazy good stuff with strong auras he is really good. Maybe cheaper budget will be act 2 still. At least we have an option now. Someone that wants to put time into it can

Looks great. I'd want to do a Throw Barb with this merc. Barb brothers. But I imagine it's not so great when you're progressing, because in this vid you are buffing the hell out of him with all the auras and most OP gear setup. I'd actually be upset if he *wasn't* killing quickly. Frenzy just makes him insane though.
Make Iron golem drop the item he is made of when he dies. Make him not despawn if it was summon from charges from other classes. Make all golems summonable at the same time. Rework poison dagger skill to poison weapon (any) Add charm only inventory space Add RARE charms which can give +1 to skill tree and plus specific skill. Runewords can be done in unique, rare, blue items. End game maps. Make it possible to hire all mercs at once (SP only) make them use full gear with boots, rings, gloves and amulet. Mercs can use skills(+charges) from items such as cast Valkyrie or zeal. Make soft skill points to synergyze between all skills and classes not only summons of druid! Assassin can use fade and burst of speed at the same time as well as summon shadow warrior and master at the same time. Make 4th mercenary maybe assassin you can hire from Nataliya. Do 4th difficulty with level 90, 95 and 99 areas. Druid to summon all 3 spirits at once. Immortal poison creeper + more damage 100% chance to cast on level up changed to lower % ctc on strike etc
No the creepers should cast curses or do corpse explosion the summon Druid still blows also either increase the number of summons or double or triple their damage this merc clears stuff faster than a fully geared summon Druid

A really great addition would be a new runeword witch will give the salvation and prayer auras at the same time BUT it will be available ONLY for act 1 and act 3 mercenaries and would be a runeword for bow's and shields, I think all this would be fantastic...!
A5 merc with last wish will probably be able to clear Ubers. Don't even need to make a smiter anymore, just cast life tap from wand until you can save up for LW and have fade proc'd.

there are a ton of gear that this merc can get. Dual crescent moon for static Crescent moon + plague for static + lower res Unbending will + plague for more safety measures just add a LS on his headgear
I am set on my reset Char: FoH Pala, Merc with 2x HoJ, Dragon, Flickering Flame/Andy/Arreat. I guess the 200% with auto-melee range is good enough to not care about bonuses. Gonna give it a try on PTR

Its great that they made this new barb solid. Now lets see if they will also "fix" his older brother. perhaps give the other one Natural Resist and have a higher max resist. That way you get to choose if you want a physical tank or an elemental tank. This is a nice change so far

That merc has more gear than I ever put into my actual toons, Casual Fortitude and Grief lol
fortitude is cheap and grief isnt necessary

I main a frenzy barb, targeting is easy. Skill on left click, hold button down without a target and he moves and frenzies anything he runs into.

First people can buy their currency for real money there so it's basically buying items with extra steps and secondly the page originated from the botting community to sell their botted items there and a lot of their users bot to this day so I wouldn't want to supply those people with a bigger user base and potential market

Act 3 merc was my favorite years ago just because of his design and attack style, but dude is extremely weak though. He can't even block with a shield equipped which makes no sense and they didn't even fix that. He needs a serious upgrade

I think this barb is actually good enough so it could deal with elemental immunes. For going through the game with fire or cold characters, for those of us who hate skipping monsters.

I would use Sazabis with Lawbringer for a budget build. He would have great sustain and a pile of health.

One of the things I miss most about the mods - no boot slot for mercs. New barb looks good but he needs some shoes for more fast.

Heatholaf, the missing 4th defender of Mt. Arreat
seems like a great companion for a trap assassin or something that doesn't need the meditation aura or a sorc not using a super mana-heavy build (like an orb sorc)
Sazabi's set was also buffed and is great for this one, add some nice proccs or auras such as by using a Lawbringer for example on the off hand, cheap but super effective!
Seems like it could replace the a2 merc for a summon necro. Can get that first kill faster for CE.

I'm glad they are making changes like this to the game. Giving it more diversity is awesome! Even the skill balance changes are super cool.
I hope they dont nerf him. Hes actually viable, if they nerfed him really...at all he wouldn't be worth it, but as he is hes a good alternative. Hes real good with insane endgame gear on, but he SHOULD BE. We have a tendency to forget that this one mercenary would be months of farming daily to equip like this. Id like to see them do this to the other two, make the archer and the sorc viable damage dealers. They need some ai adjustments I think...to make them try to stay at range, and a lot more dps since they're not tanks. Id almost like to see the paladin merc get a survivability buff, that way we can pick from 2 dps or 2 tanks. Itd really make for an expansion on the styles of play we have to enjoy.
I personally disagree on only single point, not every merc should be top DD. I totally fine if 2 and 5 will be for tank/damage thing, and 1 and 3 more for support/CC.
1 is okay atm, does not need crazy buffs, maybe more res for example for her? dunno.
But act 3 still need much much more love. Something to sustain, something to not die in 1/4 second.

When I first started playing I looked forward to the act5 merc because it said barbarian...I was sure that he had to dual wield and be a brother barbarian next to me.What a disappointment it was when I tried him for the first time...and now this is fixed, finally! Hope blizz doesn't find a "problem" with him rn and does some bs nerf. He is perfect, leave him be like this.

He doesn't need a nerf. The Act 1 and 3 mercs need to brought up to this level. Act 1 changes have been on the right track... Act 3 seems like it's going to take a while.

Dual wield should make many builds viable. Pair lawbringer/azurewrath with doombringer (+% life, solid damage, cheap) and you get a hefty magic damage dealing tank. Heck, give him Bul-Kathos' Children! This patch might truly resurrect D2 experience for me. The fun and excitement of finding new gear to replace old, both not necessarily meta-grade, but giving the feel of progress. Now not only for main char, but also for a5 merc. Memories enhanced :)

I really appreciate this new addition and changes, though, there should be one more option for Act 5 merc. All other Acts have at least 3 options and Act 2 even has 6 so I don't see why there are only 2 options for Act 5 merc. Maybe the other one could be Berserk/Whirlwind.

he's more than perfect with low gear, throw him lawbringer/unbending will/duress/gface and he can help u a alot in Chaos and worldstone keep, the AI and movement speed from frenzy make him more aggessive and more helpful, it go really well with some budget build like windy druid/ FOH/ throw barb or physical bowazon. Don't like the stupid act 2 merc we just spend all the time to wait him for some extra dmg from might aura-which sometime be unactived
This frenzy Barb seems great for a summoning druid or Necro to push it up to an easy fast clear without having to worry to much about anything

It has probably been done, and probably with no gear on character, no charms, /players8, full clears, no replaying areas, only the merc without restrictions. On hardcore.
I've seen MUCH worse self-imposed restrictions beat the game.

Act 3 Merc are Sorcerers not palas tho, even if they did and get access to an ETH Exile shield they will still die the second a mob farts on their way, problem with em is they can't leech life back since they no melee like others and this game has no healer class or skills ( well pala, but meh ) .
The act 3 mercs are sorcerers, and the act 2 mercs are skilled in the holy auras. It would make more sense to me that an act 2 merc could weild a paladin shield if they could use 1 handed weapons. But I see where you are going, and I agree!

That is great! I remember I used to use an act 5 Merc you tank Uber Diablo back then.
I've been playing since a week after d2r came out about 10 hours per week (sometimes more) and have never found anything higher than Mal (I hellforged an ist on one character and cubed up another so I could make a gul rune). Ber feels literally impossible.

Lawbringer seems really good on the merc to support a physical character. Sanctuary aura would remove physical immunity from all undead (most physical immune are undead), and it would also provide decrepify for increased physical damage.
Most of the physical immune I've ran into are the winged ladies and the beasts with Fade though :(
So Act 2 Merc is still the meta but there’s some competition for those who don’t want to just use the Act 2 merc
Hopefully they can get it to the point where each merc is situationally the best

Probably will use this instead of Act2 for FoH or any spell-based build that doesn't really need the merc auras or insight (that is, spells with casting delays). Double Azurewraths are probably pretty good now that they've fixed the sanctuary bug. If anything else G-face and duress will be great to apply crushing blow repetitively on bosses on chars who do not fight physically and have no static field.
Why u keep testing characters with very high price end game gear, like only 5% of people will even reach that in a ladder season, or unless they buy from web…..

My only comment on this is that I want them to balance all mercs to be reasonably viable. Especially if they could do it in a way where which merc you chose depended more on which class and/or build you played yourself rather than just "act 2 merc is the only viable option"!
What I am saying: Please don't nerf the barb. Buff the others to be in line in their own ways. The more builds that become viable the better. They don't have to replace the currently best builds as the best builds, but they should be brought closer to it.
If you spend 200 Ist on your mercenary and give him Fanaticism, turns out he's pretty damn strong!

I think that is the cool thing. Duel wielding he has lots of options and if your rich giving him crazy good stuff with strong auras he is really good. Maybe cheaper budget will be act 2 still. At least we have an option now. Someone that wants to put time into it can

Looks great. I'd want to do a Throw Barb with this merc. Barb brothers. But I imagine it's not so great when you're progressing, because in this vid you are buffing the hell out of him with all the auras and most OP gear setup. I'd actually be upset if he *wasn't* killing quickly. Frenzy just makes him insane though.
Make Iron golem drop the item he is made of when he dies. Make him not despawn if it was summon from charges from other classes. Make all golems summonable at the same time.
Rework poison dagger skill to poison weapon (any)
Add charm only inventory space
Add RARE charms which can give +1 to skill tree and plus specific skill.
Runewords can be done in unique, rare, blue items.
End game maps. Make it possible to hire all mercs at once (SP only) make them use full gear with boots, rings, gloves and amulet.
Mercs can use skills(+charges) from items such as cast Valkyrie or zeal.
Make soft skill points to synergyze between all skills and classes not only summons of druid!
Assassin can use fade and burst of speed at the same time as well as summon shadow warrior and master at the same time. Make 4th mercenary maybe assassin you can hire from Nataliya.
Do 4th difficulty with level 90, 95 and 99 areas.
Druid to summon all 3 spirits at once. Immortal poison creeper + more damage
100% chance to cast on level up changed to lower % ctc on strike etc
No the creepers should cast curses or do corpse explosion the summon Druid still blows also either increase the number of summons or double or triple their damage this merc clears stuff faster than a fully geared summon Druid

A really great addition would be a new runeword witch will give the salvation and prayer auras at the same time BUT it will be available ONLY for act 1 and act 3 mercenaries and would be a runeword for bow's and shields, I think all this would be fantastic...!
A5 merc with last wish will probably be able to clear Ubers. Don't even need to make a smiter anymore, just cast life tap from wand until you can save up for LW and have fade proc'd.

Unbending will + plague for more safety measures just add a LS on his headgear

I guess the 200% with auto-melee range is good enough to not care about bonuses. Gonna give it a try on PTR

Its great that they made this new barb solid. Now lets see if they will also "fix" his older brother. perhaps give the other one Natural Resist and have a higher max resist. That way you get to choose if you want a physical tank or an elemental tank. This is a nice change so far
I hope this doesn’t get nerfed now… this is an extreme case with gear and auras . This is absolute endgame when you almost don’t want to farm anymore . Try him with mediocre gear like head strikers and then we will see
