I'm using upgraded ethereal guardian angel armor and kiras guardian helm. Nice boost to max resistances especially when farming travincal.
I'm surprised you didn't mention that ethereal version of any item is always better for merc because they don't spend any durability.
Tbh I found this guide lacking. Its basically "put good stuff on them".
I just got into Hell, and man I can't see life leach and more defense helping much. He just dies so FAST. Like *blink* oops he's dead again. He wouldn't live long enough to heal through it with life leach.
The key is faster attack so he leeches faster. Treachery usually solves the problem. Thresher or giant thresher instead of cv or ca
No holy freeze does not add cold aura around you and does not add cold damage to your attack...it does for the merc but not you....

Now, what are the exceptions? Let’s say for arguments sake that I’m insane and want at least one of each hireling ”just because” but I’m not so completely untetered from reality that I don’t care if they do anything useful… I’m asking for a friend, who is definitely not me, right.
So the act 1 rogue, she does pretty good damage if you give her a big bow, right. And there are some bow runewords that gives you an aura… What kinda character would benefit most?
And the barbarian, you can put a big armor, helmet and whopping great 2H-sword and he’ll be reasonably hard hitting and tanky, right? so the question is … which build has the least use for any of the act 2 auras? Are there good runewords that only go in honking swords?
Finally. The iron wolf… There’s a challenge. I actually really like the frosty version in act 3 normal. For a character that has bad aoe and no ranged attacks (that’s my barb), he adds real quality of life. Chilling and freezing all those pesky little runners and flyers. But does it make any impact in inferno and hell? And again, the opportunity cost, missing out on a juicy aura. How does he measure up against an act 2 merc with holy freeze for instance?
Everything has been tried. Someone here with answers?
act 2 is the best merc unless you want an act 1 rogue with faith. other than that, act 2 merc with holy freeze or might is the best for all classes. the auras are way too good to give up

Is the Aura activated automatically? Or do you need to put specific gear on for it to be activated??
no. the merc auras are always active regardless of what the merc wears, they are active passive auras. Sometimes the merc just needs to be engaged in combat for him to activate it.

This needs to be updated haha, you can now use Insight, Cure Helm, and Skin of the Flayed One and he heals close to 100 HP/Sec.
Remember you can feed them potions as well shift+belt key, or you can drag the potion to his portrait

Diablo is amazing. I have been playing it non stop every weekend. Just like the old days the first time I played Diablo I and II. The only difference is that now I don't have much time to play more as I used to as a kid

Dude, the number of times I’ve yelled “Emilio, GET OUT OF THERE! EMILIOOOOOO!!!” the last week has been insane. My wife knows the name of my mercenary at this point. Pretty sure he’s part of the family now.
I ended up with Emilio because he was the literal ONLY person with the right aura in the entire shop when I first went there, but he has the best name hands down.

Just FYI holy freeze doesn’t apply a freeze, it’s an aura with cold damage that applies a slow. So items like raven frost do not work against it, also that is why cold immunes in hell still get slowed. Just something nice to know
Its a "chill" effect actually, what slows down enemies. There is a type of blood lord in act 5 what has a mod "can nto be chilled" those are not effected by the holy freeze slow effect.
My merc dies when monsters just look at him.

Life leech and higher damage is a huge help, but mine still dies when he gets ganged-up upon or when he tries to go toe-to-toe with Andariel. He currently has an Insight on a Thresher and Tal Rasha's helm, but has crappy armor.
Looks like i will be making a Treachery for mine once i get a Lem rune since i already got a 3 socket elite armor on the ready, or a Smoke once i get a two socket elite armor. Hopefully that is enough for him to face Andariel and not die, i currently can't kill Andariel quick enough to save him.
@@sepg5084 I do my Andy runs wo the Merc. He dies occasionally and I really only need him to take care of immues - which Andy isn't

With the new graphics it is pretty brutal seeing dead mercs on the ground.
Decrepify on Reaper's toll is not there only to "slow down monsters" for the most part, but to break physical immunities (it does -50% physical resistance).
But the curse is pretty dope you have to admit😁 isn't it 30% chance to proc?

I remember back in 04 or so my act 2 merc would solo hell diablo with probably one health pot. He was a Chad.
So funny to watch this video while my merc is literally carrying me in most of my Hell farming with Reaper's toll, Andariel's visage and Fortitude in Eth Archon plate. Only some of the enemies can kill him like Council pack with conviction or boss pack of death lords with some cursed fanaticism with extra strong.
Damn those death lord packs can be crazy in hell. Faced a group with fanaticsm, cursed and extra fast. They killed me and my merc in like under 2 second...

Blood helms/armor are a potential, if weak, option too. I have a 2% LL helm on mine until I find something better.

Thorns is the shit….I don’t even have to engage with my paladin…waves of enemies just die as soon as they attack you. People sleep hard on thorns 🤷🏼♂️
Fade also gives 1% dr per point so 15%dr on treachery is not bad at all
tell them about the Prayer mercenary, the synergy of that with Insight and meditation for the 50 to life per 2 seconds at level 18. That is great for casters/energy shield sorceress
As a cold sorceress. I like might, so my mercenary can kill the immune to cold faster.
that's good assuming if the merc can last long enough to kill the enemy or before he gets mob
I’m running a fury Druid and have found the cold aura merc is the best fit

When choosing my mercs, i rate them as follows.
1. Are they Emilio?
2. Are they NOT Emilio?

I just slapped a decent insight and trech on him and a lifesteal unique helm of some sort (still looking for that lmao).
But defiance and holy freeze are nice for survival.
Crown of thieves is a solid choice for that life steal! Or a tals if you can’t find the crown
Not sure if you mentioned that ethereal gear is better for mercenary. More damage on weapons, more defense on armour. Sadly the only merc gear i have that's ethereal is Durials shell armor. It has over 1000 defense and is pretty good but i usually go with Treachery
probably a tip most people know but when farming keep an eye out for ethereal weps in nm cows or if you can handle hell cows preferably. Look for 4 sockets or use a socket quest on the best wep you can find (thresher) because of the low cost to use. Pop a ral-tir-tal-sol in that bad boy and you'll be good to go on mana. Lionheart is also another good word for armor which will get your Merc to max res. Even with a blue life leech circlet you'll be good to go for quite some time.
You don't mention Vampire Gaze? 15-20% damage reduce + life steal is godly for a merc. Shaftstop body armor as well for 35% damage reduce, both incredibly solid budget choices.
I’m currently running an eth shaftstop as I haven’t found the runes for fortitude. Do you think it worth upping for now?
@@calibrated692 Eth boneweave shaft is GG defense for a merc, that'll do you incredibly well so yes, up it.

What a waist of upgrade runes. Treachery cost less than upgrading from exceptional to unique and is infinitely better then guardian Angel.

Just a basic thinking, what makes ur merc better. Dmg, leech, ias. Them all combined ur good to go.
You forgot to tell me how the hell i get a CA/CV and a Loricated Mail pre-Hell, i can't drop them, i tried to look how to upgrade but i'm even more confused now. i Want to get my merc some good stuff, but idk how to get the elite version of weapons/armor.
If I'm not mistaken, you can only upgrade uniques. No bases, rares, sets... So you have to trade or farm hell.

So stoked that I was able to find all the runes for fortitute, along with a nice eth dusk shroud in D2R. Also got the tals mask and insight already so my merc be slappinnnn

Treachery + vampire gaze(with cham) are best combo. Fade is insane. So much res, damage reduction, and most importantly the curse reduction. Curses are what kill your merc. No other armor can compete. It even hits a faster hit recovery break point. Then with vamp gaze gives you another 20% damage reduction with 8% life steal.
Oh, I should stress, treachery isn't just the 'budget' option, it is BY FAR best in slot. Vamp gaze is best with the life steal+damage reduction. Andariels doesn't give a significant AS breakpoint and it's only 2% life steal for the loss of 20% damage reduction. Thieves is 12% life steal but again, 20% damage reduction is more valuable.
Ya or shaftstop. Cant go wrong either.
I would hardly consider Emilio pointless for cold builds. Several reasons.
1: with his ai the way it is, it's hard to predict when he's going to rush into a pack before you're ready and having him apply his aura to immediately freeze stuff is actually quite useful.
2: found out the hard way that cold immune mobs won't take a chill from my skills, but will take a chill from his aura. As ultimately tested at length against the cold immune mini boss in the final wave on baal. Nothing I did would apply a chill to that guy. Emilio came In clutch and face tanked that bastard turning it into a Smurf for the 10 minutes it took for him to kill it.

Fade also reduces damage taken I think. And you forgot to mention vampire gaze :). My merc often dies of physical hits from bosses.
Never mentioned shaftstop vg combo either. Which would probably help the most for those hell diablo meph runs.

I'm lv 73 barb and just started hell difficulty, i found that cold arrow rogue merc is a better choice .
the Fade from treachery also decrease the amount of time you are cursed and have 10% physical damage reduction, Under helmets, 2 options not mentions is Vampire Gaze good life leech (up to 8%) and up to 20% physical damage reduction. and the runeword Bulwark, for 5% more life and 4-6% lifeleach.
a budget armor like shaftstop is also worth considering for the 30% physical damage reduction.
Christ infinity is such a pipe dream for ssf, ber mal ber ist is nuts this early in d2r🤣

The most important part when choosing your A2 merc is the name. Take your pick of Might or Holy Freeze and join new games until there's an Emilio with your preferred aura.
All mercs died when they are facing a huge pack of Lords of Hell with Amplify Damage, Iron Maiden, Mana Burning or any other enchant. Huge Pack Blacks Souls are terrible especially when joined 3uniques and 4 champions monsters
Restarting games til emilio and the right aura pops up. Another form of mf
insight, stone, delierium. done. Maybe fortitude instead of stone if you want. Oh, and btw.

Yeah this pretty much only goes for lightning immunities. You can also at times not even break lightning immunity when you run into a lightning immune unique. In said circumstance its not even possible with level 25 conviction on a Paladin to break it.
how to keep my merc alive with insight or insight + cure(helm) setup? really don't want to keep chucking potion even at later level
Remember in OG D2 without LoD? The merc couldn't equip anything and would die once and couldn't be revived lol

There is a very interesting option missing there to equip to your merc: Delirium! A Delirium helmet will cast curses all the time which protects your main character and your mercenary from monsters’ attacks! Very efficient on a Hammer 🔨
It causes the game to crash terribly if used on act2 mercs. Dont invest in this use dream instead
why does my 3socket helm didnt turn into "CURE" runeitem after putting Shael + Io + Tal ?? it just turned ito gemmed item, i am playing solo offline btw. i dont want to waste any other hi runes. pls help.
1. Runewords working only on white or grey(ghost) item-bases. Grey one can not be repaired but have +50% more base armor or dmg(for ghost weapon). But merc can not break they weapons or armor so it is great for them.
Likely you try blue item or higher.
2. This runeword added in 2.6 patch so if you play illegal old version - this will not work.
3. It is season-only. To make it you need to play on-line on curent season. You can not have it offline.
If youre having trouble finding life leech helms for the ole mercenary. Gamble circlets. They are cheap at lvl 25 or so and have good mods with them. Easiest way to get some life leech for the merc.

Nice video. Thought that I had read or heard that as long as you want the auras from normal mode a2 mercs they end up with slightly higher stats than the mercs from hell with the same auras. Have you noticed something like that at all?
They changed that in d2r so it's just based on your character level

If I am JUST entering Hell with a pure cold sorc and can't even finish the Den of Evil in act one due to the cold immunes (theoretically), I'm guessing Smoke and Insight are my best bet so my merc can kill them for me? Right now he gets whacked by a single zombie...
You should put points into meteor as you will have lefties over points in your build . I am maxed out blizzard and still got 15 points in meteor.
So the Act 1 Mercs are THE worst of the bunch then..?

Ummm, I cannot cube higher than thul. Its stops at thul, i have tons of thul, thul doesnt transmute into anything, so no you cant really start at lower runes and work your way up. my experience

My Barbarian mercanaries survive hell with
Weapon : (Magic) Cruel Executioner Sword of exervication (200+% damage and 50+ maximum damage) or Blood Moon (Unique) (situational)
Helm : (Set) Tal Rasha Death Mask
Armor : (Unique) Shaftstop Mesh Armor or Rattlecage (unique) (situational)

I just went up against Diablo on normal first time and got crushed by his shock attack lol. Level 28 pally holy fire build with really only fire resist
That shock attack will kill most people and mercs. When he uses this, I recommend walking away from him and zig zag to have him miss. gL
get ancients pledge (3 open socket shield, Ral+Ort+Tal) gives around 48% resist in most all resistances, its a good shield for normal. and stock up on Full rejuvenations pots (3 rejuvs combined through cube, instant full health and mana pots). You only need like 3 of them for Diablo, but make 6 just in case. You can make 1 partial rejuv by combining 3 of any health and mana pots and a chipped gem of any kind in the cube so just buy the cheapest pots (minor).
so sum up the guide.. get better gears.
