    Saw a video by Car Wizard and he spent crazy time on how hard the job is to do, Vehcor in this video just does it and isn't there to hype how tough it is, rather that it is doable. Different mindset altogether.

      Bro, NOBODY, I repeat, NOBODY-enjoys removing the entire dashboard, front seats, center console, steering wheel and steering column just to replace a $35.00 part. On top of that, these vehicles are usually 10 years old or more and you end up breaking all kinds of plastic parts. Most DIY’ers just bypass the heater core anyway because the car is old and not worth the headache. 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

    Did that a few years ago on my trusty 2000 model. Took me 8 hours, maybe 9 but has a full center console. I didn't disconnect the steering shaft or shift cabke which I see now why I couldnt pull the dash completely free. I pulled it back at an angle to gain access to the HVAC box, pulled the box back as well and barely had enough room to remove and replace the heater core and only because the heater core pipes actually swivel. Pain in the ass. Next time, heaven forbid, I,'ll pull the dash all the way out. There wasn't a video years ago showing the tricks. Great tutorial as usual. AAA PLUS!

    Hands down the best video for the dash removal. Of all the videos I watched, this is the most straightforward and quickest way to go about it. I have an '02 suburban LT, so the only difference was taking out the seats and center console first, then the rest was the same. Thank you for saving me so much time and headache. This video is the best.

  • @timagenbroad7733
    @timagenbroad7733 14 днів тому

    I appreciate the straightforward approach here without removing lots of extra components. It has been easier than I anticipated so far.
    Couple of observations... There are a few places where the video shows a bit clearer detail on the reassembly (2nd half of the video) so if you're having trouble seeing something, skipping ahead helped me.
    The two 15mm bolts on the top of the dash (driver's side near windshield) were hard to see, like he said and took me a while to find. When he said screws, I thought he meant the smaller ones holding the U shaped brackets but there are 2 larger 15mm bolts down in a little inset.
    Thanks for making this video!

    Did mines about two years ago on my 2000 Tahoe. As it was my first time doing this I took my time. About 12 hours total (taking photos, resting and learning when to walk away and calm down :-). If I have to do it again I figured I could do it in half that time. I made sure to replace everything else in there as well (evap core, actuators) since I had everything apart. I was not going back in there!

I had to use a bucket and step stool when removing the dash, but it was a lot more difficult getting it back in (no friends either, by myself) because It dropped and angled lower with the bucket. That dash is heavy! Thank you for your vid!

    Best video out there for this process. I am having an issue with it coming loose on drivers side it seems. There is something I am forgetting or not seeing in this removal process. Have it all disconnected at pillars and the 4 bolts at top. Steering wheel bolt/nut disconnected, shift cable disconnected, bracket bolt just below column removed, support brace at about center bolt removed. Obvious electrical connections mentioned in this video disconnected. When you are talking about bolts over steering column those are the ones i believe I am not understanding unless that was included with the 4 bolts up top close to windshield. Any assistance with this would be appreciated.

    • @vehcor
      @vehcor  Рік тому +2

      I did not see you mention the bolts on the top. They have 15mm heads and are accessible looking straight down from the top of the dash (easiest to look through the windshield). They are tucked way down there so you need an extension but not too long, you need to clear the windshield. The duct is shaped around at least the left one I believe. It was in the video but I didn’t see those mentioned in your list.

Wouldn't this a great time to blow all the trash out of the AC evaporator and replace that fresh air door actuator hidden behind the air box that always dies at about 180000 miles. While you’re in there a new blower motor and thermocouple blower speed control would seem to make sense as well since you have to be a contortionist with tiny hands just to be able to reach those things later. Cheers

    "It was kind of a MESS when I got it..." - How did you know I was thinking that about my 1988 BMW 750iL when I first bought it in late 2005? Great job on the video and yes, my car's heater core replacement will be at least as involved as the heater core replacement on your truck. Thanks for another great video, Scotty!

    I had to replace a leaky evaporator on my 23 year old Silverado 2500 HD (it only had 130K miles). Decided to go ahead and do the heater core and those pesky actuators too. Replacing the actuators is a real gamble if they are not currently malfunctioning, but hey, I got married in Vegas, so... I watch many of your UA-cams. Yes, you have friends.

    I saw your thumbnail and my first thought was "rut roh" lol
    I remember back in the day when changing a heater core was an hour job at best. 2 heater hoses, some silicone sealant, a couple of wires on the fan and a gear clamp was about the gist of it. Easily and readily accessible from under the dash in the passenger footwell.

    Quick tip on those actuators, probably mostly for commenters. The grease they use on the gears inside eventually gets on to the rheostat (or variable resistor or what ever it’s called) clean that up with alcohol, along with any other loose grease, put a little, little dab of dialectic grease on the gears, re assemble it and put it back in, that has been my problem with everyone of those gm hvac actuators. After that they work like a charm.

      I will say that the hardest part about replacing the heater core in a 82 to 93 S10 is getting to the top screws on the cover. I've replaced the core in my 91 ext cab twice. I found out the hard way to stay away from the aluminum heater cores in these trucks. It only took 3 parts stores to find the correct unit.

    I love the video and you did a great job. But for GM to have you take the dash apart to replace a heater core is ridiculous. And some engineers were paid well for this. I have had chevy cars all my life but in my old age now no way. I need to do this on a 2006 GMC Sierra. So I guess o have to set aside a day to get it done. Again great job!!
