You guys don't just react to anything, you actually make pretty deep dives into the Prog genre, which just so happens to be my fave style of music.
Honestly, I'm just getting into Porc Tree myself, along with a deeper dive into Rush, Yes, Genesis, Jethro Tull's back catalogues. You guys are honestly picking fantastic bands & songs to react to. Just don't forget the Prog Metal bands too - DT, Opeth, Tool, Devin Townsend Project, and Haken (you would love them).
Keep the great reactions coming guys!

This is the very first time I hear anything by Porcupine Tree; thank you to Eric who suggested this to you, and thank you for playing it. That mega-death section was totally unexpected and is such a contrast with how the first 60-80 seconds played. Your reaction as the song ended; my reaction too. Yes, it is the first song I hear from them and I'm an instant fan.

I'm going to suggest for you a band that went in a similar direction of PT but may not have known about each other . . .
Try Fates Warning's albums; "A Pleasant Shade of Gray", "Disconnected" and "FWX". They were experimenting with Moody Dark Prog Rock/Metal when it wasn't cool, and with a very few other bands that were doing it too (Dead Soul Tribe, Paradise Lost, Katatonia, Anathema, The Gathering, Pineapple Thief, OSI - which btw, Gavin Harrison replaced Mike Portnoy on their last album).

So funny you said “I feel like sending this to all my friends who like music” That was just what I felt hearing this song for the first time 😊. I only discovered PT/Steven Wilson in 2017 and this song was my intro to the World of PT/SW and was the reason why I dove more into Their music. It was life changing for me because my immediate reaction was “oh my god why haven’t I heard this amazing music before”. Not since I discovered Pink Floyd when I was about 14 (many years ago), has new music had such an impact on me!! PT is a very diverse band. This song is more heavy metal influenced. Can recommend “Stranger by the Minute” more melody driven but still interesting song. Greetings from Denmark 😊

This is the only band I've ever listened to that is better live... nearly every song. They manage to be true to the original versions and improve upon them at the same time. Steven Wilson's voice actually sounds better live... and nobody can make a guitar cry any better than he can.

Amen, Manfred Stock! The live "Anesthetize" is an epic for the aeons! I have never heard/experienced such tight and perfect guitar-drums interplay as in "Anesthetize" (studio and concert versions). And the last few minutes are melancholia at its very finest. The poignant lyrics, the singing - including the complex but perfectly executed multi-part harmony, the brilliant guitar wizardry, the atmosphere which transports us into another dimension, are ineffably fantastic.
I heartily recommend "Anesthetize": the famous "live in Tilburg" performance from the incredible "Anesthetize" DVD, as your next Porcupine Tree reaction song.
You will be sssso glad you chose it! And, if you're like me, you'll be weepy. The latter part is a tearjerker, in a good way. -- CC

    Well its about time :D
This is my fave track from the album, and in my Top 5 Porky Tree tracks. The "Build-up" to the end is awesome, and I love the story and what I _understand_ it's about. Can't add much more than your informative audience has already, and you have so much more to experience on this entire album. This one is also great on headphones where you can sit in the dark, and just let it take you away :).
Also - one day you MUST experience the LIVE version, very energetic. It was an "experience" to see them twice (this tour) and the "Fear of a Blank Planet" tour.
Btw - if anyone knows; What are the mechanical "clicks" at the beginning? What does it signify (no pun intended)? I've seen already that someone said its a "Windshield Wiper", but I don't think that's what it is, sounds more "machine-like" here (other than the windshield wiper sound on the Dream Theater track; "The Ones Who Help to Set the Sun").

    • @mvunit3
      @mvunit3 3 роки тому

      Hey Nick,
For me, the "power chord" parts toward the end, I think they remind me more of what PT/Wilson was being influenced by; Dream Theater and that _type_ of Prog Metal during and before (I know its been mentioned somewhere before, and that Wilson became friends with Mike Portnoy, who also gushed about them). But it reminds me of the mid-period of Dream Theater, and the mid (at the time this album was out) to later period of Fates Warning, who was experimenting a lot with a "darker" prog metal sound. These guys (FW) were never afraid to go off where Metal _wasn't_ going. They always change-up their sound. That is why I want you 2 to get into their history, they change, almost on every album and make their own type of Prog Metal. Its a shame more people don't know Fates Warning.

I think you would like "Take a Pebble" by ELP from their first album. If you want sumething great live, try "Taken the Hit" from Joe Bonamassa at Rockpallaste.

You really need to listen to "Ghosts and Typhoons" by Pure Reason Revolution. It's basically what would happen if indie rock and prog rock had a baby. Amazing song that features male and female vocals. You'll really dig it

Long before UA-cam reaction videos, it was hard to get exposed to new music. My oldest son was going away to college and they had a Facebook page for incoming students, One of the threads was on favorite bands and one incoming freshman raved about Porcupine Tree. So I checked them out. They have been my favorite band ever since and this is by far my favorite song. Other favorites are Fear of a Blank Planet, Anesthetize and Lazarus

I really wish you guys would reconsider Blackest Eyes by Porcupine Tree. I think that song is one of their most catchy, heavy, energetic, and cleverly brilliant pieces they've written~ especially how the loveliness of the music contrasts with the dark nature of the lyrics. A real conversation piece. PT Blackest Eyes 👁️👁️

“And all you knew was wrong” 😑
Delicious build-up from soft, contemplative to heavy, but open vibe. The windshield wipers, like a metronome, become the shaker, then the drum. The vacillation of the energy keeps it fresh and unexpected, like accidental DEATH from a gun or a crash. This is the song to hear while dying. Lol. Thanks, Eric. Great reaction, fun channel, right?!! 🤪

There's few bands that produce music that give me goosebumps. Rush do ( even now) and so does Porcupine Tree. Brilliant. Also Steven Wilson's 'The raven that refused to sing' on which there are 3 tracks that make hairs on my smarts stand up 😀

Thank you so much for another great PT reaction! You should do one more reaction from this album before you listen to the whole thing. I would suggest the title track, Shallow or Lazarus, That way we at least get one more reaction form this great album! Keep it up guys, love the videos and please react to some more Spock's Beard soon! Would love to see you guys listen to the The Doorway.

You can obviously hear in the beginning that Steven Wilson has an ambient project called Bass Communion . The beginning of the instrumental part (just before the trash metal part) is coming directly from the track LSD from Hawkwind from their album 3electric teepee (Wilson of course is also a huge fan of Hawkwind) . Steve Wilson have a huge span of music taste (from ECM jazz to extrem metal) , he can mix all thoses sources without making a carbon copy. Not a genius but a clever man , a man of taste.

FYI recommended early Floyd-alike: Double album "The Sky Moves Sideways" of 4 tracks each a side long & very listenable, then a Tool-like album "Fear of a Blank Planet" which is about a bored, ADD diagnosed kid kept in check by prescription drugs. Many other genres even pop / ABBA like e.g. "Permanating" a colourful dance routine. ...I want to claim the smily one in yellow, she's fun! ua-cam.com/video/K0gryiltJo0/v-deo.html
Some must come With a Warning (won't say why): "Routine", "The Raven that Refused to Sing", then "Drive Home". Need to be in a centred, good place b4 listening to those; all have cartoon vids which are part of the experience / must watch.

  • @handy905

Thanks for reacting to this - at last! :-) Knew you wouldn't be disappointed.
...although I mentioned this track on another channel and some guy piped up "... there are 200 Porcupine Tree songs better than that!" So it isn't to everyone's taste.
In my opinion though, it's not far off musical perfection. Such a journey through incredible textures.
Anesthetize (Live in Tilburg) is probably the only thing that might just top it... that show is live performance perfection.
    Thanks once again.

Never stop the car on a drive in the dark
Never look for the truth in your mother's eyes
Never trust the sound of rain upon a river rushing through your ears
    (Ah-ah-ah-ah)
    Arriving somewhere but not here
Did you imagine the final sound as a gun?
Or the smashing windscreen of the car?
Did you ever imagine the last thing you'd hear
As you're fading out was a song?
    (Ah-ah-ah-ah)
    Arriving somewhere but not here
    All my designs simplified
And all of my plans compromised
    All of my dreams sacrificed
Ever had the feeling you've been here before?
Drinking down the poison the way you were taught
Every thought from here on in your
Life begins and all you knew was wrong?
    (Ah-ah-ah-ah)
    Arriving somewhere but not here
    All my designs simplified
And all of my plans compromised
    And all of my dreams
Did you see the red mist block your path?
Did the scissors cut a way to your heart?
Did you feel the envy for the sons of mothers tearing you apart?
    (Ah-ah-ah-ah)
    Arriving somewhere but not here

Love this track. Kind of in the same vein as this one ( maybe this is actually a sequel to ...) is the track Heartattack In A Layby from their In Absentia album ( the album before Deadwing ).
