    I like hidden side mounts for holding the downspouts. I’m also surprised they weren’t using a chop saw with an aluminum blade; we nearly exclusively cut downspouts with a chop saw as the cuts are fast, flawless, and perfectly perpendicular. We also like rivets instead of screws as they leave less obstruction inside the downspouts, don’t have points to catch leaves or the like with, and just look cleaner; rivets do have 2 major downsides they take slightly longer to install as they take 2 steps drill and pop as well as being more work if you make a mistake as they have to be drilled out. In NY I can’t recall the last seamless gutter company I saw with their gear in an open trailer; in NY everyone uses either a box truck or enclosed trailer. You can get good companies for seamless gutters that cut barrel connectors in for downspouts, in my opinion the only way to do it as it directs the water into the downspouts, some companies however will simply cut a cross in the gutter bending the created triangles down and screwing them into the downspouts which allow a lot of water an easy path to flow out of the gutter and around the downspouts; I see this quite a bit around here as homeowners don’t look or know and it is much quicker than cutting barrels in. My aunts house has gutters put in by the areas top company, a company I use from time to time and check the work on, and which uses barrels on our jobs, but who apparently doesn’t use barrels on any other jobs; after seeing their work on her house they came off our sub list as well as my list of referral companies. Know the work you want, let the contractors know what you expect, and the work you get as these unseen areas can make a huge difference to the end product. It’s sad when you think you’re getting top notch work, especially when you’re paying top notch prices, over 10k, and then getting corner cutting. Don’t get me wrong you can cut some corners for savings, and when you do the customer should at a minimum be aware and at most make the choice directly; cutting corners should never be to circumvent either code or safety but sometimes quick and dirty is all they want, just make sure everyone knows what they’re getting and what to expect.

      I kept having issues with a particular gutter that would clog and it was the screw that attached the downspout to the gutter that would catch a leaf and then everything when from their. Plus they just cut and bent the gutter instead of putting barrels so that also makes the opening a bit narrower and easier for clogging. I want to replace that screw with a rivet but haven’t seen a rivet that clamps that thin.

      Hi Chris. Yes agree with everything you say. Wish I had your comments before my guttering was replaced/added to. They did a poor job however they did put overflow dams (not sure what they are called) on the gutters where a downspout drains onto a roof. I didn't see any on the spec house however I am sure they did.
      Also surprised the spec house went with corrugated downspouts and bends. I had all mine replaced with rectangular pipes because the corrugated ones looked so cheap. Bearing in mind the angular architecture of this house I would have chosen plain rectangular down spouts, but everyone to their own.

      The big box stores sell white and colored rivets typically right in the gutter area; there 1/8” by maybe 1/8” or 3/32” and work great as there is little to nothing that protrudes on the side.
      As a note to the other comment a downspout should never be dropped on a roof; this both leads to premature shingle/roof wear and can lead to leaks especially in the winter when water can flow down and get behind an ice damn at the soffit and push up under the shingles. Shingles especially will wear out quite a bit faster under the flow as they simply aren’t designed to keep up with the water volume; just think of how Niagara Falls is slowly eroding backwards. Flowing water has a lot of power.

      @@libertarian1637 I should have mentioned that my roof is concrete tiles and I live in San Diego so freezing is not an issue. Also it rains about twice a year for a few hours😞 However it looks like you are saying downspouts should never be dropped onto shingles. Isn't the spec house doing that?

      I really like your point about screws versus rivets. On my house inevitably some piece of debris will catch on the screw in the downspout and that causes a cascading clog that eventually blocks the whole thing. I just might have to follow your advice and get up there and replace the screws with rivets - easy enough job to do and will stop a lot of the extra work from clogged downspouts (though not from leaves and helicopter seeds!)

    I've been doing drywall for 30 years. I'll never forget the first summer when I first started. We were taping a good size house when this box truck pulled up. I watched curiously as the guy went around taking measurements, not sure what he was up to. Finally he stepped up in to the back of the box truck and a few minutes later started walking out of that box truck with a gutter that seemed to just keep coming forever. I couldn't figure out what was going on. How was that 30+ foot gutter stored in that 12' box truck. What kind of wizardry was I witnessing? Finally I put down my taping tools and walked out to satisfy my curiosity and was amazed at the machine that turned out those gutters.

    • @rpavlik1
      @rpavlik1 3 роки тому +1

      @jami w and as long as no material builds up in the gutter. I'm no builder, but I will guess there probably is a standard for slope, because you need not just flow, but fast enough flow to carry away both debris and water. (My gutters are sloped yet not enough to keep them clear or even dry. Replacing them is in the long term plan.)

    As a German I found the gutter die forming machine mesmerizing and using aluminium is quite smart, but I cringed when they fastened the pipes. Just a screw through that sheetmetal holder into the pipe. I like the german solution much more. Titanium-zink or even copper sheetmetal, everything is standardized, holders that leave the top completly free and open, no crimped and flashed end caps (it's braized in germany) and not even a single screw through sheetmetal to avoid corrosion of a steel screw in aluminium (or titanium-zink or copper).

    Yeah, those front porch downspouts look awkward. I would have put a 6inch gutter there and run it all a single downspout on the right side tucked up against the siding of the house. I’m sure there is a way to do it like that and handle the amount of water flow in one outlet. And yes the upper downspout dispensing onto the shingle will wear it prematurely. Some kind of splash guard there would help.

    1st of all I love all the videos!
    The problem with architectural details, is they are hard to finish with good detail.
    The front porch columns are one of those pesky details.
    Personally I would use a rainchain instead.
    Down into a wider disguised gravel sump, then to into the ground connection.
    3x4 downspouts are not aestheticly pleasing either.
    For unlimited budgets, the gutter feeds into the wall to an internal downspout.
    Different looks are different budgets, not the same for every one.

      I'm replacing cast iron with aluminum (aluminium) ogee gutters. PVC not permitted due to conservation area rules. Although 1,000 miles further north than New York we get less annual rainfall! There can be problems with salt-laden air so if you live 󠁧󠁢near the ocean ... well the sea is two miles away from me so I'm taking the chance. Also great care has to be taken with cutting aluminum. Hello,
    I was hoping to see how they attached the down spouts. When they installed the down spouts on my house they cut a X and bent down the edges, the opening is smaller then the down spout. Then the screws that was used to secure the two together obstruct the opening even more. I was advised to get gutter guards and I would not need to be concerned.

    You have to admit, you cheaped out on the gutters. So much of ths project was top flight but this work was tract grade. A builder has to make his margin somewhere, I get it, but I would not confuse this with with the term "craftsman." How you frame a stairway is "craftsman" and you might not want to sully your own master-level skill with this price-driven work.

    • @spock59

      I despise negative comments, but agree with the craftsman part. This house deserves a craftsman quality gutter installation that should have included cutting, braking, and soldering of copper gutters and downspouts. By industry standards, this is a fairly decent gutter job... sans the column downspouts! I wish I had told Scott to install leader pipe within the interior of the columns, therefore eliminating the vertical pipe conflicting with the contour of the taper and the stone work.

These roof options are easy to install and provide a much safer workplace for the workers. It would be a tragedy for one of these guys to fall on the job and suffer a life altering injury after all the great work they’ve done. Consider putting out a video showing how to perform this work with the installers safety in mind.

    I have been waiting for this episode for a while. I've suspected for a long time that my gutters were installed incorrectly when the house was built 20 years ago. I've always wondered, and it wasn't answered in the video specifically, but how much slope is necessary in a gutter system, to ensure water runs to the downspout?

    • @rickcathcart2196
      @rickcathcart2196 3 роки тому +1

      We pour water on the roof from an old plastic pop bottle, and make it run as slow as we can but definitely enough that the water runs to the downspouts. Taken off many old gutters half full of water and shingle grit. The brackets they are using won't allow proper installation of leaf guard if required, as it sticks up in the middle when the screw is screwed in. Difficult installation having no fascia. We place a bracket every foot, normally they are every 2 feet, these look to be several feet apart with no support behind the trough

    • @MisterJDagger
