I’ve seen Steven Wilson 4 times and he once introduced this song by first explaining that he writes songs with depressing subjects because the thinks they’re beautiful (that it’s a common human struggle). When he submitted the demo of this song, his manager or producer (can’t remember who exactly) said this the most depressing song he’s written. Steven concluded that by his logic, this song is the most beautiful song he’s ever written. 😂
For whatever reasons, I feel compelled to listen to this piece over and over again, mostly in reactions. He premiered the video at a concert in London. The female singer is an Israeli singer-songwriter named Ninet Tayeb. She also sings on another SW solo song called Pariah. Check it out if you haven’t yet. Stay well and keep the reactions coming👍
On the Hand.Cannot.Erase tour, at least when they came over here, Steven said before playing the song: "You know me for writing dark, melancholic and depressive songs, well the next song is the most, for me, is the most depressing song Ive written. Its dark even for my standards....this is Routine." And they started....
One of the most perfect marriages of music and images I’ve ever seen. Beautiful and devastating at the same time. And it still hits every time I see it. That scream 😭
The saddest song + video ever made. So gripping. The theme of this whole album is about a woman that died in her apartment without anyone noticed for years. The video is another take on the lyrics that works so very well! Jess Copes animations are amazing too!
Did you see the newspaper? It explains the entire song as to what happened. And while this is a very sad song, there is also hope at the end. You have to look at it that way where she finally breaks at the end and it’s not about mourning or forgetting but coming to terms with a tragedy and being able to move forward while keeping people in your memories. It’s actually quite beautiful if you’ve ever been through significant loss and have to learn to live again.
Absolutely true. She's been in denial for some time but finally accepts the situation. I love how her dark, swollen eyes become more natural at the end, like she's getting some sleep at last. Almost seems to grin a bit. What a genius Steven is.
Steven Wilson is an incredible artist. He has been likened to the David Bowie and with good reason. This such a brilliant moving piece, the super animation videos with this is excellent. He has gorgeous melodies, and is the true spirit of modern prog rock.
There is a great ‘live rehearsal’ version of this song on YT from the Royal Albert hall in London. Worth a watch on screen or off. There is a mood uptick after the scream that ends on hope. The Album from which this comes is one of the best progressive albums that I have heard in 50 years and well worth a listen and some more reacts ‘Hand Cannot Erase’…….try any track they are all good but maybe the live version of ‘Ancestral’ also from the Royal Albert Hall would be up your street.
Yes, this song is included in the vinyl version of this concert and this 5th disc is the most played of the set... It's even better than the "original", because Ninet sings a lot more, taking the lines that usually SW does. This guy is a genius, truly an amazing musician.
Should also listen to the live version at the Royal Albert Hall which is even more gut wrenching than the studio version. Have a go, you won't be disappointed.
Hi guys - love your open and honest reaction again as always - but you must promise us faithful listeners that you will in fact listen to this song at least once more - the LIVE version sung by Ninet Tayeb from the Home Invasion DVD recorded at The Royal Albert Hall in London in 2018. Even more impactful is that they include on the DVD the rehearsal of this song which is of course played to a completely hauntingly beautiful but totally empty theatre - only adds to the impact of the loneliness of the song. I assume you noted that newspaper clipping on the floor toward the end of the clip that explains what the song was about - a mother who lost her husband and 2 children to a school shooting in the USA. Also notice at the beginning she sings of washing their dirty shoes and clothes in the sink - she was likely washing the blood out of them - and this is why when she cuts her hand washing the dishes and her own blood flows into the sink she finally loses it. Incredibly powerful song, written, recorded and yes produced by Sir Steven Wilson. Please do yourself the.... experience... of watching the LIVE version. You will be brought to tears - but it will be worth it.
I saw Steven Wilson in concert a few years back, and he basically started by saying "I hate f'ing hate happy songs. I like melancholy songs." Being a "happy music guy" I thought to myself, what am I doing? Damn did I get a lesson from a musical genius. This video and song should be played to every single Congressman and Senator who has voted against gun legislation. Perhaps with their eyes forced open like in "A Clockwork Orange." The effect that the events portrayed in this video have upon the lives of every single person left behind is in many ways unrecoverable, but like in the end ... there's hope and a pathway back. But we never leave it completely behind.
I've listened to Routine many times and it always brings a tear to my eye. If you think this is emotional you should see it live, especially with Nenet singing - incredible!
Beautiful track (Thanks for the reaction). Loss of a child is hard and this video was marvelously crafted and (for me anyway) breaks you to tears. This one is hard to watch but so well done and the song brings the emotion that comes with it.
It is a dark song but there is a lot of hope at the end. Notice that in the early part of the video she is putting all incoming mail (presumably cards / letters of condolence for her loss) immediately in a box in a cabinet in the hallway. At the end of the video, after her personal crisis, she is going through them all. Like Wilson sings “Don’t ever let go … try to let go”. She can let go of her husband and boys but at the same time she has to let go of her denial of the tragedy, or her daily routine she kept up even after they were gone. That is the hope at the end, that no matter how dark a place you are there is always light at the end of the tunnel, always.
This whole album is his OPUS! I am a huge SW fan. And he does all his own production along with many others; look them up, the man is a genius. And Ninet did the the other vocal work on this and her voice is just perfect for the part, and the boys choir parts are spectacular. I could go on, so much in this… A work of art.
You should react to Home Invasion. Perfect mix of prog rock and Steven Wilson-ness. Right up your alley too. Also it has two great surprises in the end which i think you will love. ❤️
For those who don't know what it's actually about, in the original video around 7 minutes, read the newspaper on the ground. In this reaction at 07:49 . She lost her whole family (husband and two boys) in a school shooting.
This song just hits me everytime, it’s a masterpiece, you guys should really check out some of his live performances “luminiol” is a journey, “Ancestral” is just a joy to watch, let us take this Steven Wilson journey with you’s 😃💙
Well, i think i’m the Ryan?!? You are welcome! But, it is a hard song to get through, especially with the tremendous work by Owl House Studios in the UK. There’s an article online somewhere that talks about how it took something like 18 months to create all the stop animation. Love you guys!
Hope... It's a song for hope. Its a real, sad, still filled with hope song. The female singer is a israeli singer called Ninet Tayeb. She sings several songs with Steven. Should check her out. Take a peek at her album "Paper Parachute" 😉
**Spoilers** - The main character has lost both her husband and 2 children to a horrific school shooting (a la America). She continues her everyday life as if it didn't happen, hence "Routine". The song ends with her angrily discussing her demise and recovery. It's a very positive song about true death.

lol thats hilarious and cool at the same time
I wonder if he told that story at every stop on that tour.... he said the same thing when he came to Denver.
This song crushes me every time I listen to it!! So beautiful yet so sad…
I have two little girls and it's an absolute gut punch.
This and 'Drive Home' are probably the best solo songs he's ever done. The female vocalist is Ninet Tayeb who also shines in 'Pariah'. 🤘
Don’t forget Ancestral
@@marcoaperezd and Rider II
Ninet Tayeb also sings on People Who Eat Darkness. That one is a real rocker.
Maybe Rider II is more in line with these fellas’ music taste
@@MartinPage789 I agree but a ~20 min song is not an easy one to pick

Like Steven said once “find the beauty in sad things”
On the Hand.Cannot.Erase tour, at least when they came over here, Steven said before playing the song: "You know me for writing dark, melancholic and depressive songs, well the next song is the most, for me, is the most depressing song Ive written. I think it's nearly impossible to listen to this as a parent and not cry.
It’s been years since I first heard this song and it still makes me tear up near the end.. thanks for checking it out guys
One of the most perfect marriages of music and images I’ve ever seen. Beautiful and devastating at the same time. And it still hits every time I see it. That scream 😭
Ugh......... Yeah, this song, The Raven That Refused To Sing, Drive Home, Pariah.... RIGHT IN THE FEELS!!😩
Damn you, Steven!😂
Jess Cope did the stop motion animation... Also did a few other SW videos & even a newer video for Metallica. She’s a badass.
The saddest song + video ever made. So gripping. The theme of this whole album is about a woman that died in her apartment without anyone noticed for years. The video is another take on the lyrics that works so very well! Jess Copes animations are amazing too!
Hand. Cannot. Erase. is a brilliant album
Two other animated videos + music he did on the same album are a must watch: The Raven that refused to Sing and Drive Home.
it's not the same album, routine is from Hand.Cannot.Erase and raven and drive home are from The Raven that refused to sing
Also all of those three music videos were made by Owl House Studios, which has also made the video for People Who Eat Darkness (also by Steven)

That phrase holds so much meaning ❤️
Absolute makeup destroyer this one (if I wore mascara), gets me every time for years

Steven Wilson with Ninet Tayeb at The Albert Hall makes me cry doing this same song. So much talent!
The way this song ends...my god.
There's hope even after what happened to this woman

Hand cannot erase is a fantastic album. From the beginning to the end😀👍
top 5 album of this century so far.
I think this is a song you listen to when you need it. It’s not an everyday listen song but you know if you need to hear it.
You can't dismiss this song because of the quality of notes and sounds they use...its beautiful but sad...its nice but dark
Damn, Steven is a master at tearing your heart right out of your chest
Time usually flows, but time away from people one loves slips away.. until its too late.. what an amazing song..
Great sad song. My favourite from Steven. Always makes me cry.
I am a big Steven Wilson fan and got to see this masterpiece performed live twice.👍 One of the saddest songs ever.
I saw Steven Wilson in concert a few years back, and he basically started by saying "I hate f'ing hate happy songs. I like melancholy songs." « Luminol » live of Steven Wilson would be great on your channel!
Drive Home is a must watch as everyone else is saying. Also has one of the best guitar solos I've ever heard.

This video was one of the best kept secrets of Wilson's concerts. I can say with great confidence, the Milwaukee crowd was left speechless.
Did either of you even see the newspaper on the floor? That's the key to the entire story.
It is a dark song but there is a lot of hope at the end. Don't ever let go.
&
Try and let go.
Are the two things that people feel compelled to tell you, when you've lost someone, but are contradictory.
This whole album is his OPUS! I am a huge SW fan.

A song about recovery - the end is about hope and the human spirit having the ability to move forward.
You did' t READ a newspaper on the floor. 😢 This is change everything!
You look so untouched🥺🥺🥺
For those who don't know what it's actually about, in the original video around 7 minutes, read the newspaper on the ground. In this reaction at 07:49 . She lost her whole family (husband and two boys) in a school shooting.
Watching you for the first time. Assuming you're a couple, try to watch Drive Home by Steven Wilson and not cry while looking into each other's eyes.
If it’s anything like this track we’ll
Most likely avoid it lol
Mr Wilson is a musical genius..
Steven Wilson - Luminol (from the Get All You Deserve Blu-Ray & DVD) ...this is really another dimension of progressive rock
'Hand Cannot Erase', the album from which 'Routine' is taken, is perfect imho. A piece of art. 'Happy Returns' at the end is equally heartbreaking.
This whole album is amazing.
"It's not a song I'd listen to again" ? Seriously !!

Hate to say it, but that's the coldest reaction video to this song that I've seen.
However, summed up with your feelings nicely at the end 👌 👍
New album coming up

Apparently Dave Gilmour told Steven this song made him cry.
I think it's a combination of stop action and puppet
Depressing maybe, but the saddest song ever, yes, for sure.
Next up, Drive Home.
