Another in a huge catalogue of great songs by Steven Wilson and your empathetic reactions to his songs have been great so thank you. Maybe time to see him and his great band live. I suggest, ‘Refuge’, ‘Detonation’, or ‘Ancestral’ from his concert at the Royal Albert Hall London. Also consider checking out his band Porcupine Tree who are just phenominal. ‘Trains’ or ‘Time Flies’ or the epics ‘Arriving somewhere but not here’ or ‘Anesthetise’. I’m sure that you will really like them and great music is both emotional and cathartic.

I've heard these songs hundreds of times and seen the videos multiple times, but they can still get to me and I'm glad I saw your thumbnails this morning because I really needed this. My grandma passed less than 48 hours ago with the rest of my family around her bed, but I was out of town for work and her condition crashed really quickly and I wasn't able to get home in time to say goodbye. Life just has a way of carrying us through these moments like a flooded river, unable to really focus on our loss because there are a hundred things to do and arrangements to be made and you need to rush around to attend services and it's not like the rest of your responsibilities just go away, but sad songs and sad images can help to pull that grief out, and even with all of us total strangers alone in our own rooms looking at our own screens, you helped bring about a sense of shared grief. Thanks man.

1984 I lost my Dad to cancer, I was 10 years old. There's a lot of music that triggers good memories of him. That's the power of music, it also helps the burden of grief too. Much love buddy.

I think you're ready for the other side of Steven Wilson. Try The Watch maker live in Frankfurt or Luminol live in Mexico City. Thanks for the reaction and I cried again. I always do. This one and The Raven that Refused to sing do not fail to make me cry every time ❤

This one is personal.. and the hardest to see. A situation very similar to this.. happened irl to people I knew. I happened upon it just moments after.. I had to comfort a man who just lost his wife, his kids distraght in the ditch.. I needed words to say, push away the shock, and help them. I've known all of them for years, dear friends of mine. The scene replays over and over..
The words of this song play over and over.. each line, something I either told him, or him to me later.. over time. We're not the same, but we go on. Great reaction SW & PT are ❤ to me. ❤ and ✌️everyone.

I would recommend reacting to a song called 'the old peace' which is a collab between Wilson and Mariuz Duda. The lyrics were taken from a poem by Alec Wildey who was a fan of Wilson band (Porcupine Tree) and Duda band (Riverside). When he died Wilson and Duda did this collab to honour him as he was known to both bands. A beautiful song.

    that was brutal. honestly. wow.
my twin sister died next to me in a car crash, we were trapped inside the wreck for half an hour and all i could do and reach was her hand, full with blood, and feel how life was running out of her. when the rescuers arrived, the car started to burn and they got us out of the wreck in the last second, still too late for her. damn, steven wilson, don't do that to me.
thank you for introducing him to me, his songs and music videos are so painful to listen and watch, i just need a moment to breathe now.
from what i've seen so far by him..
his art is on point with everything. the song, his voice, the excellent music videos. he translates this that at some times cannot be said. and it's good. sad and good.

Great reaction to Drive Home. FyI, I've lost count of how many times I've cried during multiple sections of Steven Wilson's 'Hand.Cannot.Erase' Album, which hopefully you'll get to more of. Some of those moments are solely because of the beauty of the music rather than the lyrical story, and I cherish composers that can do that to me. Nightwish's Tuomas can do that, and he and Steven are in the same league, in my book. Thanks for another wonderful few moments with you.

Thats 3 heavy hits in a row Wolff. As some others have suggested - might be time for you to see some other aspects of the genius that is Steven Wilson. Perhaps try from his latest solo album The Harmony Codex, the official video of his track What Life Brings for a song that appears to be heading in a similar direction but ends with such beautiful hope.
Or if you want to be completely mind-blown, find the live recording from his 2018 Home Invasion DVD of his track Ancestral. Take in the lyrical message but then be completely mind-blown by the musicianship for the rest of this epic track!
    Keep the Steven Wilson coming!

  • @MestHoop

This song, and the video, always felt metaphorical to me.
That you want to detach yourself from your grief, but it still might paralyze you for years, and it isn't until you face that grief honestly, and learn to deal with it, that you can heal.
Maybe I am projecting, because I have gone through those steps (not literally, of course) after the loss of my best friend.

Or if Metal is your taste, try: Steven Wilson's band: "Porcupine Tree - Arriving Somewhere, But Not Here ". Or "Trains" as a mix of really good prog + metal. Or full-on quality prog (like Pink Floyd) "The Sky Moves Sideways". But most is like "Open Car" - quality modern stuff.

All the songs on "Raven That Refused to Sing" album are about themes of death and endings, I think, fantastic progressive music with such sad themes. I also just realized that the same director and animation studio made the video for Opeth's "Universal Truth", one of my favorite songs off their most recent album. Did you ever see that one? It's another sad video, though the song actually ends hopefully, imo.

Do you know how complex, unique, unusual and innovative the chord choices are? That chord progression can only be come up by a musical genius.
Do you know what is mode and modulation?
Try to listen to every single instruments, sounds and effects separately, listen to every single details, and how they interact together. Listen to how well layered are the sounds.

I don’t care about the lyrics, message and video.
The music is extremely sophisticated and complex.
It’s not those boring standard 4 instruments, 4 chords songs with no songwriting techniques, disguised by fast technical playing. That would be like crafting a cucumber into the shape of a dragon but at the end it just tastes exactly like a cucumber.
