Hi LIsa, I realize that this video is from much earlier this year, but I just discovered your videos recently. This year I devoted myself to getting outside of my box. I've developed my own technique for completing my oil painting backgrounds, really started doing pastels and started playing with cold wax. The cold was is the most exciting part for me. I love abstracts but just couldn't get what I wanted from using just oils. Cold wax has been the key for me. Your videos are opening my eyes to new materials, ways of working and playing, and different color ways that I may not have used in my oil paintings. Thanks so much for making your studio and process available.
Thank you for your comment! Oil/Cold Wax definitely opens doors for play and creativity in a way just traditional oils do not offer. So glad you are playing and experimenting in your studio with this medium! So glad you are enjoying my channel too!!

Love this video and can't wait to see the 2nd. Finishing is always the most difficult and also painting over old paintings. That is something that I need to work on this year. I have unfinished and some I thought were finished that need to be resolved. Thanks for all the good information.

Thank you for a great demonstration. Do you finish and “buff” your paintings with a layer of cold wax once it has dried? If so, how long does the painting typically take to dry before you apply a coat of cold wax?
Thanks for the info! Recently I started trying out acrylics and wonder if it could be mixed with cold wax. I’ve done oils and watercolors predominantly but invested heavily into Acrylic due to the Acrylic Pouring Craze....which I’ve enjoyed so much...due to the abstract results!! Just curious since I’m not familiar with cold wax but love doing abstract work Thanks!
Connie, you are most welcome!! The only way you can use cold wax with acrylics is as a varnish at the end, or to do an acrylic underpainting then use oil & cold wax over top of the acrylic. This is a beautiful way to use both mediums!! The oils and cold wax lend themselves so beautifully to abstract work!

In france we cannot find the medium cold wax and with the brexit Jackson art supplies cannot send these items.... i would like to begin to paint with cold wax and oil so i need to find a recipe to fabricate by my own . you say that it is gamblin in your bottle but what it is ? this item is not found her soby wich it can be replaced please
Christine, thank you for watching my UA-cam channel!! There are many recipes online fir making your own cold wax, I don’t make my own but I am sure you can find a good recipe to do so! The Gamsol is odorless mineral spirits made by Gamblin. It is used for doing certain techniques and also for cleaning tools, brushes etc.. I am not sure what an alternative would be that you could find in France. I know some have said Zest It works but o have not used it. Hope you have good luck making the cold wax and that you can begin painting with this medium soon! It is so fun!!

Lisa ..Funny I am partial to seascapes so I love the painting (as is ) which you are reconstructing. They both are great. One question: how long after having done a cold wax painting( realizing substrate and thickness come in to play) do you consider it ready to go out of the studio or be shipped. Cookie, The R&F pigment stick I used for the warn rust color was Alizaron Crimson. I also used a celadon green and a stil de grain. R&F pigment sticks are amazing!! Thanks for watching!! Happy New Year to you as well!
I love this painting! When does the cold wax come into play? Was it mixed with oil paint that you spread on the surface, or used straight on the surface to spread the pigment sticks?
Lori, I mix the cold wax and each color of paint in a 50:50 ratio on my palette before I start painting. So every color I am using has already been mixed with the cold wax. The pigment sticks have a certain amount of wax in them, but not as much as I am mixing with my paint on the paint. Therefore, the R&F pigment sticks do take a little longer to dry. Lisa, I was really surprised you actually obliterated the original as I expected you to leave areas and just enhance it. I have seen other works you have done where you add a texture or affect with with added layers seem to cover it completely. I guess this just as the art evolves but when watching I think wow that is cool, then you lose it ! Just down to personal preferences and for each of us knowing when to stop LOL

Connie, Oil and cold wax is best done on a rigid surface. Gamblin does make a product called G-Gel or Galkyd Gel that you can mix with your oil and cold wax to help give the paint more flexibility to use on canvas. You mix a 25 % ratio into your wax and paint. I prefer to use panels or paper, or smaller sized canvas. The larger canvases are too flexible(too much "give" in them) and you cannot do a lot of the techniques on these because of this flexible surface. However, you can always experiment with the G-Gel and see how you like it. Thanks for watching my UA-cam channel!

Thanks so much!! It does depend on how thickly or thinly the layers are applied and also temperature and humidity, but usually within 2-3 weeks!
