It depends on heat and air, but generally it will set up overnight so you can work on it the next day and there are many ways to work on those semi dry surfaces. To completely dry it takes a few weeks.
Thank you so much for helping me take the "cold wax leap"! I love this new way for me to express my creativity. Question: I have purchased a few bowl scrapers & squeegees but all of them have edges that have tiny cuts or irregularities on the working edges. When I lightly scraped and remove areas on my paintings, I'm left with those lines and edges that I have to go back and try to fix. What should I do? I hate to purchase more. Then, I ordered a small roller and those edges also leave lines on the paintings. I've tried sanding the roller's edges but it still is very bad. Have you ever had this problem? Thank you for your suggestions...
Ugh that’s a real problem. You really do need one with clean edges and if they’re not then they’ll give you exactly that type of problem unfortunately. Send it back if it’s defective next time…
She mentions using Gambling Galkyd and Cold Wax medium in the video to reduce viscosity. I’d like to see someone using damar varnish or epoxide oil gel as I’m interested in learning about all mediums and so have been reading a book called Brushwork Essentials to sort them some. There are so many products on the market to choose from that it gets confusing as to which does what!
There were several moments when you were working on your piece where I really loved what you had but as you continued it got covered over. If you ever have an inkling to post a video on this topic, I- and probably other newbies- would be most interested. Thanks- your work and your process are both fascinating.
Yes ! Am just updating my website and I'll put something in the community comments too. Have two eight week online workshops coming up. One that starts on January 16, the other on January 23.
Hmmm now that is too tough to answer in a comment. Lots to unpack. I’m doing an online course that starts Jan 15th if you’d like and also teach a few one on ones. That’s a much better place to get this type of question answered. ☺️
I add and subtract in my work all the time. I wound up not really finding the stencil marks useful, so they informed one part, then I edited them out. Some layers are thick, some are thin.
I'm tossing and turning between encaustic and cold wax painting techniques. It seems to me that cold wax is just bulking up oil from the tube. However, with hot wax, you have to fuse layers and you can produce a really translucent effect. Have you done encaustic work? And if so which of the two 'styles' would you say is the most rewarding? Thanks for your videos and keep safe.
I haven't used encaustic techniques, so afraid I can't answer. When I started with cold wax - and it's not the only medium I work in - I was looking for the least toxic medium I could find. That really was my motivation. Then I discovered how when you apply thin layers you can get a lot of luminosity. In the piece in this video though, am using a combination of techniques. Cold wax but also wax mixed with gamsol or galkyd....so it sort of defeated the purpose of the wax, looking for no chemicals...but I needed fluid paint. Hope that helps.
Love your demos on cold wax and oil paints, I have enjoyed watching the 4 you tube clips. It helped me to gain a better insight into using cold wax in my painting, thank you Andrea it was inspirational! From Melbourne Australia.

Thank you so much Andrea for sharing! Did you know that when your mic dropped, there was no sound for a bit? Not that it mattered!'m just about to start on one of my own on paper! I've been playing too! I'm not brave enough to share! Mine go through the ugly stage for too long😀 Xx
It is a medium that you can use with oil paint. It's made with beeswax and odorless solvent. It allows you to create a lot of body, dries quickly, but you can still rework layers or dig into them. I use it to give my paintings body and I like the mat finish.
Oh man, filming yourself is a giant challenge, and I'm always trying to improve it. I'm excited to say that I have a new self-paced class coming out hopefully before the holidays and am hiring a professional videographer. It'll be such a luxury to have someone follow me around with the camera. That'll be a paid class but worth it :) Thanks for your comment !
Yes, it is called Cold Wax, sort of like a stiff shortening texture that can be mixed in with oil paints. There are several brands; you can also use it with oil pastels, pigment sticks and I just saw where someone was using it with alcohol inks. It will dry solidly and also speed up the dry time for oils.
GORGEOUS !!!
Stunning piece!!
Love your freedom with the paint. You've inspired me! Thanks.
I love this method - just beautiful
So glad to hear, it's fun to work this way
So happy to find you chanel , your work is so beautiful and i love your videos ❤
I love this piece, it’s beautiful.
Thank you Carl. It's for sale if that were of interest :) I sell my works on paper this size for $150 plus shipping in the US.
Très jolie..bravo et merci de partager 🌷
Merci ! Contente de le faire
Beautiful! I love it!
The trick is to seal the tape with acrylic medium to stop bleeding 👌
Aha !
Helpful tip, thank you.
Love your work , thank you for teaching us to try 🙏😉
You're so welcome !
How long does a mixture of oil paint and cold wax mixture takes to dry? Beautiful work by the way!

this cool
Beautiful colors! Can you tell me if Galkyd is similar to Liquin? Thank you!
Yes, it is!
What was the pink liquid in the white container that you were using on your brushes? Love your work!
Pure gamsol. I got a little pink paint in it by mistake but just kept using it ;)
Lovely!
Thanks Cathy

I wasn't familiar with cold wax. Thanks

I’m interested in your online class, when is the next one and how do I sign up?
I’ll post info to the community next week, but reserved your spot ;)
Wow!!!
Thanks ! Hope that was helfpul !
Fabulous technique and gorgeous work. I am surprised how your oil paint get dry so fast. Do you use something to speed dry?
No I don’t add anything. It dries much faster when there’s heat and a little air. I had both in spades working on this one
How long does it take for the wax to dry?
How do you frame cam and oil on paper?
How do you frame cold wax medium and oil pieces on paper?
Phthalocyanine Blue is pronounced ‘tha lo’ blue. Wonderful video, thanks for sharing.
Thanks ! I can NEVER remember that.
Paper seems like a strange material to paint on. How do you display this artwork, or do you?
I either mount it to a board or frame it in a floating frame
With the Galcaide - its has a colour, so its mixed with oil paint, and also the wax?
Galkyd
Where can I see the beginning of the making this painting?
I didn't make a part one...Hope you can learn a few things from this video though
This is just beautiful 🤩-I would like to know what you use to thin the paints?

I was using glakyd and gamsol, half and half to get very fluid paint
How do you determine when a piece is finished?
Oh my ! That’s a whole conversation

Did you gesso the Rivers BFK paper first?
No ! Used as is.
It would be best to gesso your paper for use with oil paint.
Do you sell many paintings
Are pigment sticks the same as oil sticks???

New subscriber. Do you apply materials thick and why use stencil just to cover it up?
I add and subtract in my work all the time. I wound up not really finding the stencil marks useful, so they informed one part, then I edited them out. Some layers are thick, some are thin.

Hi Stella,
so glad they've helped you and glad to know you're inspired :)
Hello Andrea, you videos have really inspired me to give it a go! Do you gesso your paper first, or just straight onto paper?
Hi there, no I don't gesso the paper, there's no need if it's paper that supports oil paint

Beautiful. Very helpful commentary Andrea particularly about hanging in there, keep going. Thank you. Q. Are your rollers firm or sponge?
They're semi firm brayers called speedball. I probably refer to them in the notes.
