You are so great in your explanations. And this comes from an artist (myself) who has also taught art classes at the college level for many years. And the best part is: your obvious joy and enthusiasm when talking about anything art related. Instead of the 8 hundred or so views you've had so far it should be 80 thousand! You are that good! Keep these great videos coming!
Thank you very much for your kind words! It means a lot to me - so appreciate it! I must credit the instructors I had in my life with the training I share here and the passion for art that they passed on.
Such an incredible class! I really enjoyed seeing how you utilized palette knife to sculpt/ carve images/ edges. Great way to receive another perspective on edges and how to create them with a palette knife. This is forever carved in my memory. So excited to view more of your lessions. Gratitude!
I primarily paint landscapes and palette knives are an indispensable tool for me. I am so happy that you produced this video to demonstrate the different ways they can be used. My collection includes a wide variety of knives that each have a specific application in my painting. They are wonderful to create textures like tree bark that actually looks and feels like real bark. When painting water, they are great for creating shore water lines that must be straight and very sharp. As always, well done Elizabeth!
This is brilliant and I’m happy I’ve found you and these techniques. I’ve used a pallette knife but not to your level of skill. Now I can advance. Thanks so much! Carolyn
I’m so happy your excellent video popped up! Thank you for your explanation of how you use palette knives. I’ll be trying out these techniques. I subscribed and I look forward to seeing others you’ve posted.
Enlightening indeed! I feel almost strange like a kid getting a gift he didn't quite imagined but found very precious. There is some best XIX century's presence in your persona :). Thank you.
Enjoyed watching ur demonstration of the many uses of the palette knife. It did make a tremendous difference! At 1st I thought u we’re going to scrape a hole in the canvas , u were digging into the fabric, but each time I looked at the picture it made a very big difference
So glad to hear that, thank you for sharing! Yes, I imagine that I do sometimes really 'dig in' - I sometimes don't realize how heavy handed I get. Linen is very very strong. But this is also why I like to paint on a hard surface - as it allows me to be more free with the palette knife and not worry about damaging anything! 😂
Your Way of showing were so clear - that made me understand what you really do to create the nuanced qualities of your painting. You Seem to hold the paletknive on the very knife - and then you used your finger glove and a brush - in very subtle ways creating a very three dimensional image - very beautifully done ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Very informative presentation...you explained using the palette knife well. I like the fact that you used the relief you found at the thrift store. What really impressed me was the doors you showed. My wife and I just returned from 12 day tour of Italy, Florence was one of the cities we toured. We were at those doors this time last week. So many awesome sights to see in Italy. Thanks for putting this together. Well done!
Thank you for your kind words - am glad you enjoyed this video. How wonderful that you just returned from a tour of Italy and especially Florence - and got to see those doors. Italy is an incredible country - lots of amazing art.
I have so enjoyed your painting and how you used your palette knife, I would not even imagine you could have made the 3 d images with a palette knife. You are so talented
Thank you so much for your kind words :) Lots more painting will be coming up in future videos! I do have some longer length painting videos in my video library too.
I just came across your channel (it was recommended), and I thoroughly enjoyed your pallet knife tutorial. I also find you absolutely delightful! New sub, looking forward to watching your channel. ❤
Gloves aren't essential - but they are recommended if you work with cadmium paints and lead white (especially). I used to not wear gloves at all, but am a little bit more health conscious now ;) I also use my hands a lot in my paints, if I didn't do this so much I might skip the gloves...
Olá, Elisabeth! Nesses últimos anos, aprendi muito mais com seus ensinamentos do que com vários livros sobre técnicas artísticas que tenho. Eu lhe agradeço muito. Um cordial abraço!
That's the way I use my knife. most people just plaster the paint on, doing it that way you build up interesting textures like glazing and scumbling combined.
Thank you for uploading, this is so intresting. Perhaps I´m missing something, but I can´t seem to ascertain which medium you are using. Is this a technique for oils or acyrillics, or does it work equally for both? Thank you.
Ah, am realizing I may have forgotten to say - will remember for future videos. I am using oil paints - I primarily use oils. This technique is primarily for oils - however you can definitely use it on acrylic paints. It just might be a little bit more difficult/ tricky as acrylics dry much faster. There are mediums one can use to get acrylics to dry slower though - or one could work very quickly.
There is a big difference in the palate knives. I have many and most of mind have been inexpensive. I wonder if you think spending the bigger amount of money is worth it. I have been painting a long time in oil and also in acrylic so I am not a beginner but have never splurged on palate knives. I do like to use the palate knife but wonder if it is a cleaning different or the ease of using. I do know that the Rosemary brushes are so loved by other artist friends of mine but have never splurge on them either. I would love your opinion. By the way your demo was wonderful. Love what you produced in such a short time. Thank you,
That is a great question! When I put those links for the palette knives I was thinking of making a little note about the Holbein one as the price difference is quite large. They are hand forged from a single piece of steel and not welded as other palette knives are. They are strong but flexible at the same time. The liquitex one is also quite strong and has never broken on me as it is also made of a single piece, but it is stiffer than the other ones. It does loosen up over time though. The Blick brand palette knife is great for the price, but can break more easily. For now I would recommend going with the liquitex one - and working on breaking it in to get rid of the stiffness. Then if you would like to upgrade I do recommend the Holbein! You will treasure it. And about Rosemary brushes. I heard about them from others for years before finally trying them myself. I absolutely love them and by far prefer using their brushes over any other brand. The people at the company are absolutely lovely, and they have top notch customer service. Thank you for your kind words, I appreciate it!
Hello Elizabeth, Is the relief you used as a reference Jesus driving the money changers from the temple? Also I very much enjoyed your enthusiasm for relating to and creating Art!
I am lucky to not struggle with eczema. That said, I do think latex gloves can cause more skin issues than nitrile - which is the type of glove I use. I usually only wear them for a painting session - which varies from 1 - 3 hrs.

You are actually sculpting on a flat surface and so successful. It is a joy to watch you.
Thank you so much for your kind words! I appreciate it very much.
That was very interesting, I shared it with my art class ladies.❤
Such an incredible class! I really enjoyed seeing how you utilized palette knife to sculpt/ carve images/ edges. Great way to receive another perspective on edges and how to create them with a palette knife. This is forever carved in my memory. So excited to view more of your lessions. Gratitude!

I wish I had a studio!
Having a studio is really great, but you can paint really anywhere! Make a temporary studio wherever you can set up your easel for a painting session.
Good explanation
Thank you so much 🙏
Thanks! 🖼️🎨🖌️
You are very welcome!
Thanks very much appreciate it.

I really loved watching the shapes emerge as you worked them. Like magic! Is there any site to see the finished painting?
Thank you so much for your kind words! The painting isn't finished yet, but I plan to complete it. Will show it in a future video!
That's the way I use my knife. most people just plaster the paint on, doing it that way you build up interesting textures like glazing and scumbling combined.
Thats so great that you already use your palette knife in such a way! It is all too true that most people use it to just apply paint.
Hello from Cape Breton NS
Thank you for the hello. That is such a beautiful area where you live!
Thank you for this video, so helpful. Question: will this work as well on gessoed hardboard or plywood?
Thanks
You are so welcome, oh yes, it definitely will!

@@ArtStudioLife out of curiosity. what size liquitex palette knife are you using. or are all pallette knifes the same
are you using acrylic or oil or pencils
I am using oil paints :)
@ArtStudioLife can u please teach in acrylics also
I can’t seem to find the list of supplies you mentioned would be in a comment below.
Its in the description box beneath the video :)
So there's a step between mixing paint on your palette and troweling impasto onto your canvas? Who woulda thought?
❤
Hello Elizabeth,
Is the relief you used as a reference Jesus driving the money changers from the temple?

Oil paint :)
