For your background on the birchwood panel, did you use black acrylic paint mixed in with Gesso? If so, what is the ratio of acrylic paint to Gesso? Or was this a black Gesso? Thank you for your help! What a beautiful painting!!

Hi Susan. Sorry - just now saw your question. Yes, you can mix mica powder, sand, marble dust, Charcoal powder, pigment powder, and anything similar should work. Hope that helps. So weird..watching you gently stroke the paint onto your substrate is verrrrrrry relaxing. Like a massage! LOL. I'm an acrylic abstract artist but love the look of oils and cold wax. I can't use oils as they're too pricey and too hazardous for me (asthma). Beautiful work, my friend.

I went to a local Big Lots and found a big bag of makeup sponges for $2.00. I just started using the makeup sponges for painting and I get some seriously cool effects! Cheers. :-)

Gerrie Kay Church Hi Gerrie. I don’t think that’s for me. I typically paint fast and intuitively. Live painting online would require that I stop, read, think about, and then respond to questions which would take me way out of the zone. It’s different when I’m doing in-person live demos, as I can keep painting as questions are asked. I do that in my workshops. Not quite as interruptive. I’m easily distracted. ☺️
Hi! I forgot to gesso first but I did have first layer acrylic. I may just be heavy handed. Getting back at it today hoping I can rework what I did yesterday

How long does it take to dry, and to cure?
Hey! I used to live in Atlanta AND North Carolina (Lumberton). I don't miss the horrid weather in either place, ha ha! I much prefer Tacoma, WA.

Hi David! I usually start with a dark colored acrylic paint layer as background, but that’s just personal preference. You can use any color you want. Hi Kim! In one of your other demos on Masonite board using brown green orange you were using a blue color to represent sky. What color blue is it ? It looks beautiful. Thank you in advance

Hello Kim, sorry to bother. I am about to order cold wax (Gamblin probably), I am in France, nobody is selling this product over here, so I will order it on internet and wait for delivery... before I do so, I would like to know the following : I paint on rather huge format (200cm by 110cm), and I paint on canvas, my question : I have read that the wax wouldn't be "harder" than a candle, when dry. ... will the wax paint sort of "stay" stable for sure on my canvas or do I have to go for big wooden boards ? Thx for your help.
Lord Wilmore Thanks for watching. Sorry I’m late with my reply. I always use hardboard. The cradled wood panels don’t come very large, but they are more expensive. The panels are extremely hardy and can take pretty rough handling when fully dry. I can’t recommend using canvas as it’s flexible and could crack over time. You can use a Masonite panel, but make sure to paint the back too or it will warp (I learned the hard way).

How long after the first layer can I go back and add more. How long does it stay wet enough to work?.
Louise Musto-Choate Hi Louise! It isn’t necessary to let layers dry to continue painting, but a fairly thin layer of paint could dry in one day - maybe even less. The painting I was working on in this video was created in one session, so it was wet on wet. The paint and cold wax will stay workable for a while, like maybe 20 minutes? After that it starts to set up a bit and becomes harder to manage. Nothing here is an exact science though ☺️. Just play around and experiment and you’ll get the feel.
