Sheepstealer appeals to me. No nonsense, no unnecessary flair, just give him sheep and he'll tolerate your presence. I also like that Nettles managed to ride him through cunning and patience, rather than some high born flowery notion of bonding.
Meleys the red queen. She's got to be beautiful with red and pink coloring and copper accents. Plus she's ridden by 2 badass targ women, Alyssa and then Rhaenys.
Fave dragon - going with Moondancer. As well as being a fiesty reflection of her rider Baela, Moondancer played a key role in the Dance by fighting on against the much larger Sunfyre after being blinded, mortally wounding him in the process.
I think the idea of valeriya being an offshoot of the empire of the dawn is the best explanation for their "special-ness", especially when it's implied through one of danys dreams that she was possibly related to the amethyst empress, and how the amethyst empress looks like a stereotype of a targarian.
It's actually the Aeneid not the Iliad, and Prince Aeneas of Troy (Hector/Paris' Cousin), the son of Venus who founded Rome after stopping to make mortal enemies with Carthage. Fun fact, the Aeneid was basically a fanfic the Romans wrote as a new origin story because the Romulus/Remes one was a bit "Murderey" and they didn't really want to promote fratricide at that point in Rome.
Caraxes is my favourite dragon, awesome red colouring and took on Vhaegar who was twice his size and killed it. Then in a final moment of drama and pathos he dragged himself from the Lake to die on the shore. Ní bheidh ar a leithéid aríst
I wonder how the Faceless Men feel about Daenerys. I know it's a popular theory that Jaqen H'ghar is looking for a way to kill dragons, but the whole reason they rose up against the Valyrians was because of slavery, which is something Daenerys tries to bring an end to.
Seemingly most Targs were against slavery, even Aerys in his most crazed seemed deeply against it. The abolitionist mindset of the Targs seem to be what made them outcasts in relation to the rest of their people.
This was a fun and interesting video, JM, and it brought up a lot of good points/points of interest for me to muse over. I do think that there's a rebuttal with the Faceless Men theory - time and history rewriting. We simply don't know if the Faceless Men's structure and philosophy are the same now as it was then. The ASOIAF lore is rife with information and books that were created even post-Doom that are lost/fragmented/banned, so it's not a stretch to consider the idea that the FM Arya sees and the ones who were around at the Doom might not even recognise each other. I'm not saying that this is the case, just that it's a possibility. It could very well be the Kind Man is only repeating a tale he was told but the Faceless Men's records (if they even have any) don't support it. I personally think the "obvious" answer is they awoke something best left undisturbed. Martin uses the "dug too deeply" line in one of the quotes you used in the video, and Aerea returned with horrific things inside her, while Balerion had been injured during their year absence. Which hints at something monstrous (possibly with fire larvae needing living incubators) and powerful. Edit: Balerion! You've got a dragon called the "Black Dread" who isn't a world eater, isn't a twisted monster, and shows (Aerea) that he's loyal and caring. Totally flips the script on massively large black creatures.
Giveaway - Her royal majesty Meleys, the Red Queen is my favorite dragon. She was beautiful with red, pink and copper. She was the mount of Princess Alyssa and Rhaenys.
Tessarion has always been one of my favorite dragons. I like her coloration and name, for a start. I also think that her ending could contains some clues.
Got my second vaccine back in April. I was down for almost a week with fatigue and muscle pain, but it was a small price to pay for the peace of mind and it was the Faceless Men who blew up Valyria.
also... I don't think it would necessarily require a massive infusion of cash from the sale of a magick sword to hire the Faceless Men to off the mages because... I don't think they were hired. I mean, what were they going to do, pay themselves?
Something that never occurred to me before this stream is how weird it is that the Targs were allowed to take their dragons with them to Dragonstone in the first place. Either there were other dragon families living elsewhere that were forgotten by history, they somehow got special permission to take their dragons with them, or they pulled off a trick that would have gotten them in a lot of trouble if the doom had not happened. I think it's possible that the unique volcanic properties of Dragonstone specifically is what makes the latter two options possible. Either the Targs got special permission from the Freehold to experiment with letting dragons roost in the caves or managed to secretly let their registered dragons lay eggs while playing them off as still "officially" residing within Valyria. I believe the family was supposedly in the dragon breeding business? One of the more exciting but less likely options is that they discovered dragon eggs on Dragonstone that the Freehold didn't know about. They could have been left from earlier colonization attempts or from the days when dragons were everywhere.
In light of how much emphasis is placed in HOTD about the 'catspaw' dagger I'm starting to think that the Targ's when leaving Valyria had 3 dragons, and 3 swords (called Blackfyre, Dark Sister and Brightflame). Brightflame becoming Brightroar but also the dagger, keeping a small part of the original blade for themselves. Perhaps Aenar's father/mother/grandfather had something to do with it, or maybe it was something they were compelled to do because of Daenys' dreams, either way, we only know that the Lannister's got Brightroar in "the century before the doom" which gives George an awful lot of wiggle room for some Targ sabotage.
Viserys told us what happened in Valyria and he didn't noticed 😂😂😂 when he is talking to Rhaenyra, 1st episode.. And the same sentence justified Vhagar's actions towards Aemond. " The idea that we control dragons is an illusion. They're a power, man should've never trifled with. One that brought Valyria it's doom, if we don't mind our own histories , it will do the same to us" Dragons turned on themselves and burned the entire city to the ground.. now he know what causes the doom.
I always liked Quicksilver, it had a small role in the story before it was killed ( so much wasted potential) but it's description as a white or silvery dragon sounded cool and even as young/small as it was it was willing to take a run at Balerion and Maegor.
After finding out that Valyrians used to be shepherds,I couldn’t stop thinking that they are essentially like Lhazareen that got a serious upgrade and got drunk with power.
the Targaryen Prophecy, from Aegon the Conqueror to Aegon the Fifth, lead up to the last chapter of A Game Of Thrones, Dany's hatching of her children inadvertently caused the madness of her Dynasty.
58:30 Egg knows that his brother's dreams come true. I would not be surprised to learn that Daenys' dreaming abilities were known to her family members in advance of the Doom dream. If so, then it would just be a matter of convincing them that her interpretation (whatsoever it exactly was that she saw) was correct and that doom was rather imminent.
I also like the theory that the targs sold the Lannisters bright roar and used the gold to cause the doom. The doom of valerya would be paid for by the gold of casterly rock
I don't know if I go in for that theory, but it fits the Lannister mindset. Now that they have a special sword, no one else can have another again! Making what they have more rare and special. They're so warped. Lol
Gods eyes is just like Crater Lake in Oregon. Wizard island is in the center ( I'm not making that up ) and its one of the deepest lakes in the world.. And yes I do believe it was a valcono eons ago.
Correct, I went there as a kid. It's a massive blown out volcano not a meteor strike. Pretty incredible to see up close and to try and imagine how devastating that explosion was.
Silverwing is my favorite dragon and I was intrigued to read in “Fire and Blood” that the dragon kept refusing to fly over the wall. Was it just due to the icy wind blasts and the fact that dragons don’t like ice and cold or was it due to something more magical and mysterious? (.......the Others?????)
How long has the weather on Planetos been screwy? Does anyone else think that when the Children of the Forest brought down the "HAMMER OF THE WATERS" that they funked up the weather and changed the length of the seasons? Or maybe, if the two events coincide, the "DOOM OF VALYRIA" had to do with the funky seasons?
Thank you Matt for the stream. Always love the weekends for that reason. My question. Did the targaryans practice incest before the doom? Or was that something they started after.
if hardholms destruction was a vulcan eruption, where is the vulcano? where there any hints of seismological activity in that area? I always assumed it was an impact event . . . but I am open to reconsider given evidance
My favorite dragon has to be the black dread, A dragon so large towns were cast in shadow as it flew over. I’d love to see the conquest of Westeros at some point
The "gold of Casterly Rock" comment doesn't necessarily mean direct trade with the Lannisters, although that seems to be how the Valyrians interpreted it -- most of the gold in Westeros originates from Casterly Rock, so it could mean sufficient trade with Westeros *at all*. Aenar moving to Dragonstone matches up timeline-wise with when most Westerosi houses date their valyrian steel swords. Aenar moving to Dragonstone to avoid the Doom opened up an avenue for trade in Valyrian Steel weaponry, which brought Westerosi gold to Valyria, which was used by Valyrians to pay for faceless men to take out their political rivals, which ultimately killed too many of the fire mages and caused the Doom.
Would have loved if the show made way more about that children of forest coup at the end with bran. It would have been easy too just saying how they took control because all people do is butcher and they would be the ones to break the wheel. My secret head canon ending is that would Dany looked over King’s Landing proud of her victory and Cersei having to surrender only for Dany eyes to roll back and be taken her over by Bran because him trying to end the dragon lords could make sense
What if the children were keeping them out so Westeros was just marked as 'off limits' but as the children got pushed farther North it stopped being as effective, so slowly the Dragonlords were able to reach Westeros.
I think it makes sense why the Valaryons and Celtigars didn't take Dragonstone. If you don't have dragons, why would live in a dreary, stinky place that doesn't produce food? Doesn't seem like a prosperous seat without dragons.
really depends on where you live, vulcanos do not just randomly pop up somewhere, there are certain criterias needed to be met. Same goes for earthquakes, tsunamis . . . where I live natural disasters are, or well where, quite unlikely. Only in recent years did we start to get worryingly strong storms. No borders to the sea and tsunamis are not a concern and things like that. The biggest threat are the longtherm consequences of a massiv eruption quite far away and impact events that do not care about your geographie.
In this livestream you mention some kind of project you're really excited about. But, unlike the usual, you didn't want to give away the surprise, as it's an original theory of some sort. Is this project out by now?
Maybe the Red God was what they found after digging too deep and they awoke it which led to it triggering the Doom of Valyria or it was made by the disaster
Maybe the children had a firewall that kept dragons at bay from Westeros until they got massacred so they slowly retreated beyond the wall and thus the firewall against dragon lords faded or broke
Who said the Lancasters bought Brightroar from the Valyerians? Thery could have gone through a middle man, or brought it second hand, so the the Valyrians never directly sold them a sword.
The constant human sacrifice sounds very Aztec to me Do you think it required a human sacrifice everyday or several hundred at intervals? I’m imagining even 14 a day for the 14 Flames would add up over the centuries

Fave dragon - going with Moondancer. As well as being a fiesty reflection of her rider Baela, Moondancer played a key role in the Dance by fighting on against the much larger Sunfyre after being blinded, mortally wounding him in the process.
Balerion is my favorite!!! Im painting my race motorcycle all black and naming it The Black Dread!
I’d love to get an update on that race motorcycle. How cool!!

Lucky scaraxes walker
My favorite dragon is the Cannibal. He was obviously emotional about something, of what exactly we don't know. He's just too mysterious.
Literally the ouroboros
Caraxes is probably my favorite dragon. Got spunk, went out like a champ, plus cool description second only to the likes of Balerion and Drogon.
For the t shirt, Silverwing for ripping my heart out by trying to lift Vermithor's wing up after he died

Working on my car and missed the livestream. Wanted to see the interaction after watching the ASX Summerhall vid. Great stuff tho.
Silverwing has to be my favorite because she was my girl Good Queen Alysanne’s dragon!
Second video I've watched... still struck by how pretty this man is. Good hair piercing eye great smile.
Hahaha sorry I'm such a goober 🤣😂🤣
Cannibal, who ain't got time for no rider, but always has time for a snack.
Absolute legend

Dreamfyre is my favorite ASOIAF dragon due to the name. Outside of ASOIAF, my favorite is Jormungandr because he is high and circles the world.
They just need to make a series about Valeriya & it’s downfall to go along with Game of Thrones & House of Dragons

It could be Aurion(the guy that called himself emperor) might have a part since he survived while other dragon lords just got murdered.
