Volcanoes can be very destructive. The Permian extinction event that almost killed of all life on Earth is said to have started with massive volcanic events in Siberia, that started a series of disasters all dependent on each other (a very scary chain of interconnected events) all over the World. So 14 volcanoes going off at once would have been very very very disastrous.
I love how I'm here listening to fake history of a fantasy novel and never studied once for history in highschool...
I wish he would write a book JUST about Valyria and the rise of dragons in the world...or an origin of faceless men. Since there is an established legend or history of it; to get a first person perspective on what REALLY happened and how the legend was formed would be super interesting
An Age of Heroes podcast about legendary characters from Westeros' ancient past would be interesting to listen to. Especially with more details about Lann the Clever and Garth Greenhand that came in the World book.
An endlessly fascinating topic. Thanks for giving us much to think on again. Excellent work.
That Girl is a stone cold fox.
The events described sound like they are inspired by a supervolcanic (VEI 8) event.
This would certainly explain the 14 volcanic vents, and the Smoking Sea could be seen as a gigantic caldera.
The most recent VEI 8 predates recorded history, I believe it was Toba around 74 000 years ago, so one can only speculate about the immediate aftermath, but a long period of seismic activity would seem reasonable.
The events described in ASOIAF are sufficiently distant from the listed sources that those descriptions could be viewed as myth. And finding supernatural explanations for extreme natural phenomena has always been one of the central purposes of all myth.
I am always so impressed by the passion that goes into this podcast. I really appreciate all that you both do!
I love all your videos, I have decided to treat myself to World of Ice and Fire and I will do so from the link provided by you gorgeous people.
Thanks again friends. I always look forward to your podcasts. I listen to them before bed and usually in the morning when I have breakfast and feel like stimulating my mind! Keep up the great work and thanks again for the great material!
You guys have been getting better and better each episode! (Your info has always been top notch) but your energy throughout each episode has become way more engaging than your earlier podcasts. I think the best decision u guys made was getting off that couch and sitting in chairs lol (2hr podcast + comfy couch = zzz hosts). Seriously though, amazing work. Keep it up!!
I always find that 2 hour podcasts covers lots of information, and it reaches the end far too soon for my liking.
Well Done!
Valryia and Ghis history seem loosely based on Ancient Rome
and Carthage conflict with the Dothraki represented by Atilla and the Huns
we see many similarities though not exact of course. . .
Well done! Officially a fan. Keep up the great work, you guys are awesome!
I'm gonna lift weights to this podcast. :)
Edit: Back from listening and working out. Happy to hear you have something in the pipeline that will increase the amount of podcasts you can do while getting paid! With many years of Ice & Fire material to cover, the next decade should be set for you! Your popularity can only grow as people realize you kick serious ass.
Thanks man! We're hopeful it all works out. P.S. workout + podcast = awesome. I'm a big fan of that myself. First ever regular podcast experience was Dan Carlin's Hardcore History + jogging, and it all went from there.
Ianoodin yes it is! I've listened to it at least 3 times.
Aziz Al-Doory
I don't even know how I used to listen to podcasts without working out. It's like two awesome things at the same time. Like peanut-butter and chocolate!
Have you guys ever considered a potential connection between Asshai and The Long Night? I'd seen someone make a connection between how inhospitable and even deadly the climate is there to an irradiated landscape like Chernobyl in real life. Considering how dragons are sorta believed to have come from the Far East, is it possible some sort of magical-melt-down occurred there to push the dragons westward and even potentially trigger the Long Night?
You guys make great videos, by the way. I really appreciate the thorough research and level-headed attention to detail that goes into these.
+Welshieeeeee Our next episode is.... Asshai! It's out in a couple of days and we specifically mention that connection. :)
History repeats itself. The Great Dawn Empire rises and falls and leaves behind Asshai and the Shadow. Valyria rises and falls and leaves Dragonstone and the Smoking Sea.
Ben Kielar What's next?
TONS of awesome info here, thank you! ... Perhaps the failure of magic was due to the stuttering attempt of the spells restraining the volcanos to restart, draining the landscape for long enough that the magic local to the region was consumed. Also, another random theory... perhaps the Valyria foresaw the coming of the long night, and decided that they needed more forces, more strength, and went about trying to create more dragons... or even turning some of their slaves into more. (My thoughts on Greyscale's origin, since it seems to have originated in Valyria) - they may have tried to summon dragonfire to imbue into the magical apparatus, and failed terrifically.
i just want to say that i absolutely love you guys! you're my favourite by far for sullied book discussion - so well planned out with so much hard work, thought and effort put into everything, and it's all sensible too. everything's laid out clearly and thoughtfully using book quotes - i love that.
Thanks for posting this new podcast, love your endeavours, keep them coming. Australia salutes you!
W00t new episode! I read WOIAF like twice and was waiting for your guys' synthesis of some of the material. Happy Thanksgiving! Best of luck on your new endeavors =)
those 14 flames could simply be part of a supervolcanic caldera, like Yellowstone or Lake Toba in Indonesia. the Tobacco volcanoes eruption was a VEI 8; so massive and destructive it could have been responsible for bottleneck in the human population to less than 100, and Kickstart ingredients the last Ice Age.
Toba....not Tobacco.
You 2 are Effing great. Best ASOIAF channel. Hands Down.. Thanks.
Happy Thanksgiving! Thanks for taking time to give us great content
The Doom always kinda reminded me of the Pompeii story. What would dragons do against molten lava? It may not kill them but they aren't exactly going to lay down in a line and block the flow until it hardens against them.
I just stumbled upon this channel and it is SO AMAZING! Can’t wait to watch all your videos, can’t tell you how much I love what y’all do
The painting behind Viserys in episode 1x01 is actually anachronistic: in the ep. commentary, David & Dan relate how Harry Lloyd noticed in the painting that the ships had guns.
Really? Hahaha! That's hilarious. Now I need to take our advice and re-look at it myself.
i loved this video, and from now on ill turn off adblocker when watching your vids.
yayyyy! LOved that you guys posted a new video! Its gonna make my thursday here in BRazil!
I really love your podcasts. One suggestion for Aziz, try to keep your volume constant, sometimes you mutter and I have to increase my headphones volume and then you speak so loudly that's its too much to bear at high volume on headphones. Just a little nitpick, hope you don't take it negatively.
I keep forgetting to mention this! Thanks for saying.
You're definitely right about that, it's a bad habit I'm trying to break!
So some feedback, y'all should do an episode in full Westeros or Essos garb
Also puts me in the mind of Atlantis
There has always been a connection between the Red Priests, who are known for their sorcery, and the Dragon Lords. Is it possible that they are the the ones that kept 14 Flames in check? Do you think that the first Faceless Man was killing the Red Priests and it was THAT which caused the 14 Flames to blow?
When you guys upload a video, I be like 😯😅😛🎉🎉🎉🎉
Omg me 2 years ago and I'm listening again.
Please, please, please. Biggest unanswered question: What the F*ck is a Grumpkin? Are there any left? Have we heard or seen them? Any real description? Will we ever see one? AA Podcast btw you two have the best chemistry out of all the Westerosi Scholars on the tubes.
it reminds me of lost. The hatch, when they have to keep entering the numbers to negate the buildup of all that electromagnetic energy.
It makes complete sense that house Targaryian had conspired the Doom using the Faceless Men to accomplish the act. They wouldn’t have cared for Valyria after realizing they’d be the only ones left to have absolute power over the world with their dragons I’m sure. The dragon lord families were known to assassinate each other so it’s not surprising. Eventually their lust to conquer would manifest with Aegon. They must have been the ones to have sold the Sword to house Lannister in the past as well. Thus being the apex of house Targaryen’s ambitions and completely fulfilling the prophecy of Valyria’s Doom.
I love this girl
@5:20 releasing asoiaf material on time schedules goes against the GRR Martin way
Another great video. That is great news about what you have planned. Hope everything works out. Always looking forward to your videos. Cute Kitty:)
Jon Snow knows nothing of Pompeii. Sorry, couldn't resist.
There are so many conspiracy theories about the Targaryens hiring the Faceless Men, but I can't help but wonder if the Rhoynar might have had something to do with it, too. The wasteland that Valyria became sounds an awful lot like the curses they received after the Turtle Wars.
ever thought of putting the lands of ice and fire maps in your background? they would make awesome visual aids
Guys, you two are great and i cant stop listening to your podcast, (awesome planning and writing!!) but... i find having to adjust my volume very often, because the sound of your voice jumps up and down drastically quite often.. maybe its the quality of recording/microphone? not sure.
you guys make me want dr.pepper ur always drinking it on ur show an its my favorite soda and im gonna assume its ur guys to
Felicia Amat yeah we do like it a lot. Maybe a bit too much haha.
ellio and linda dont have commercials. ellio and linda dont cry for money.I want an hour long video a day. Why did the untold history of westeros go into such detail about aeres and johanna stark? they even went out of their way to quote pycelle, who we know is a liar. Please have this ready for 12:00 am EST, for thats when I enjoy listening
Jesus. Entitled, much?
I assumed he was mocking the other whiners who were not so much lodging a complaint as they were just whining.
braavos was founded 500ish years before aegon's landing, so it is about 800ish years old
Sarah James right you are, mistake in our notes there. Luckily it makes hardly any difference in context here.
So with all those volcanoes going off did the nearby regions have any effects? Usually when cataclysmic eruptions happen other nations get tidal waves, or in the case of Krakatoa the weather patterns change.
is their any way i can be a guest host for other topics from the world of ice and fire that you guys my do in the future?
Hi! Where can I find your review on the princess and the Queen? Is it on your UA-cam channel?? couldn't find it...Please share the link! Tks!
Or did the targaryens have a hand in causing the Doom? They profited greatly undoubtedly
Would it be imprudent to inquire as to the lineage of our gracious hosts?
(would it be rude to ask about your nationalities? I'm curious because of your names)
We don't mind! Ashaya's name is not related to her ethnicity, and to be honest, scholars aren't sure of the origin. It is a very old name that may go back as far as Ancient Egypt. She was raised in Hawaii.
Aziz's first name is Abishai, which is an old biblical name and is the counterpart of the name Abigail. Aziz is fairly common Arabic name. Al-Doory is an old Iraqi tribal name. Aziz is 1/4 Iraqi (the rest is mixed European).
AA Podcast That is actually really cool, I'm glad I asked. Thank you!
Westeros History Great to know, I imagine people wanted to ask in polite curiosity. Not Andal/Firstmen suspicion.
Glad to see this note, even if it is a few years later. I try had been wondering about your names
This theorys a bit of a longshot but maybe the white walkers caused the doom of valyria?
Ok so beyond balerion who was said to die of old age around 208 years old. There is no mention of any other dragons passing that way. Is it possible that a) he didn't actually die of old age. Histories are proven to be wrong in these books especially on who and how things die. And b) there is a chance that one of the 4 dragons that lived thru the dance is still alive. Sheepstealer, morning, silverwing, or crossing my fingers THE CANNIBAL! But more likely morning being she was very young at beginning of the war but would be around 200 years old now? Basically how do they know what the old age of a dragon actually is most died in war. Balerion could have died at middle age do to a quite many things. Also is there any info on the actual last dragon that they believed was the last dragon on when it died and what dragon it was? I just found your show on youtube but can tell allready I'll have a back log of videos of yours im going to watch i can't get enough of this world especially the histories! Keep up the good work👍👍
Love your videos! Is the website up, though? For some reason I haven't been able to connect to www.historyofwesteros.com
Oops, looks like the problem is on my end. The webfilter at work doesn't seem to like your site. Anyway, I've really enjoyed listening to your videos!
I stream the ck2 mods of game of thrones its heaps fun love the show too
It sucks that it's so obvious that you're reading off the screen.
Maybe try looking into the camera? :\
On those 14 volcanoes- there's a real life event that mirrors this.
I refer to the volcanic eruptions in Lanzarote in the 18th century. The present day landscape of Lanzarote is unique and disquieting- worth the visit!
Here's an eyewitness account of those times
lanzaroteinformation.co.uk/volcanoes-eruptions-lanzarote/
Maybe someone just farted. Crackpot theory, I know, but still....can't rule it out...
He looks like Ryan Tedder
Great vid u 2!!! 1 Question. exactly what kind of donations are you looking for? $5, $10,more? I wouldn't mind helping you out but I also don't want to insult you with a laughable donation. I saw you take Paypal which is great for me. So please let me know what your looking for. Thanks and once again GREAT JOB!
Most people seem to give $10-25, but we're happy with whatever you think is appropriate.
AA Podcast Thank you, That sounds great!
So if fire cannot kill a dragon how did the doom kill the dragons there?
Well the Doom would involve more than just fire, there would be lava, huge chunks of burning rock, and noxious gasses that kill. So the dragons could've died from any of those things rather than the fire/heat.
But we have seen dragons harmed by dragonfire too (during the Dance) so perhaps "fire cannot kill a dragon" is an exaggeration.
Westeros History But it is known that when the volcanoes erupted the fire was so hot and hungry that even dragons in the sky where engulfed and consumed.
Yayayayayayay =D
I hope these guys didn't sign with an MCN. That shit is a scam.
We were with one for a while, I wouldn't say it was a scam (though you're totally right that most of them seem to be) but it was also of dubious value. I'd say it probably wasn't worth it.

You've got a good show here. Good products have a habit of finding good promotion. Have you thought about getting listed in ITunes?
We are on iTunes, Soundcloud & Google Play. We've decided to forego Stitcher. More platforms may appear, ha!
You pronounce Lys "lice" not "lis"?
No, he's saying it wrong. In the show when Oberyn talks with Varys he pronounces it as "lis"
casemonsterxxx Good thing too, because I pronounce Cersei "Kersey" (mainly so I can call her Krazy Kersey :) )
no thanks
6 minutes in and you still talking about links, donation and other stuff i don't care about.
Gonna block you on youtube now.
Abbe Mårtensson you know you can always skip ahead.
Pritty girl. Do u like Scottish men? This 1 likes u lol.
