Eating 1200 calories a day - from a Dietitian

  • Ever pushed harder just to get worse results?
    The female body is designed to be sensitive to calorie and carb intake, you restrict either too hard for too long and your metabolism and your hormones will end up in the toilet.
    I’m not saying that eating less and moving more is never the answer, sometimes it is. But for a lot of women they’ve pushed that to the extreme thanks to diet culture telling you have to be perfect for results. Consistency over perfection.
    This was many years ago now (literally 10 years ago) Luckily I was able to bring myself back from that - restore hormone balance, metabolism, GI health, eat intuitively and lose weight after both babies with very minimal restriction or tracking (plan to do the same with this baby). But, This is the reality of a lot of women I work with who feel stuck - like no matter what they do they can’t get the weight off and no matter how little they eat they seem to gain weight.
    Sometimes you can try:
    1) Backing off on hit training/excessive cardio and opting for heavy lifting.
    2) Eating more calories.
    3) Eating more carbs or carb cycling.
    Sometimes that works immediately for my clients, sometimes we need to look a little deeper at hormone balance and other factors! Have you ever gone all in only to find you got worse results?!?!?

    I will say this. If you are eating only 1200 calories a day and running 5-6 miles a day you are indeed not eating 1200 calories a day but far more. The main reason people don’t lose weight during weight loss is because they can’t properly count their calorie intake. I did a 1k calorie a day for 2 months and my metabolism didn’t mess up at all. It depends on the person sure but in reality a calorie deficit is the only way for weight loss. Plain and simple

    • @HungryHobby
      @HungryHobby  Рік тому +178

      It absolutely is possible as your thyroid will start to become more efficient and lower the amount of calories it needs to stay in maintenance (aka how many calories it takes for your body functions to work without having to break down body tissues) it is a survival mechanism. There are SEVERAL studies showing that this is highly individual. Body builders in short term (less than 3 months) large increasing calorie deficits have no effect on metabolism. Studies on the biggest loser contestants show large permanent reduction in metabolism. At the point that this was occurring I was 2 years into counting calories at 1200 calories a day or less. I can assure I was accurately counting, I weighed every piece of food and even logged fish oil, I'm a Dietitian and I was incredibly OCD about it. My body was in starvation as evidenced by the lack of weight loss, lack of period, and other markers. So I can assure it's accurate, I've seen it in clients many many times that when I INCREASE their calories, we pull their bodies out of starvation and they start losing weight again.

      @@HungryHobby this is false unless you have a thyroid issue and at that point need to see a doctor. I am a short dude, didn’t know how TDEE’s worked when I first decided to lose weight, so I just googled a calculator, decided 1500 sounded right and began to eat 1500 calories a day while running and walking daily. I was honest and counted EVERYTHING, weighed EVERYTHING, sauces, oils, everything. I made sure I was accurate to the gram.
      What happened? My metabolism never got “adapated” or “damaged” but instead went from 155lbs to 112lbs in 6 months.
      It’s all calories in/calories out. It’s that simple.

      @@joseh.1399 hi Jose, initially I did lose about 25lbs at 1200 calories but since I kept eating 1200 calories and kept increasing my exercise my BMR (look it up) lowered as my body thought it was in starvation. At what point this may happen is different for everyone. Some people can go several years and some less. But I can assure I see it all the time now that I’ve been in practice as a dietitian for a decade as many of my clients have been on long term low calorie diets.

      @@HungryHobby your bmr will lower but if you work out the same and burn the calories you will lose weight. That’s not even a question or a second thought. If you burn calories and eat less than you burn you will lose weight: even if your body goes into starvation mode.

      @HungryHobby  Рік тому +18

      @@Mommaalexmilk yes your BMR will lower (www.scientificamerican.com/article/6-years-after-the-biggest-loser-metabolism-is-slower-and-weight-is-back-up/) so if you keep eating 1200 your will gain or stop losing. The only way to lose weight after that would be to drastically cut calories again much lower than 800 or work on raising BMR to baseline. Then cutting again.

      @@sunnie734 starvation mode is when ur body adjusts to not receiving enough food for a long period so u begin to live off ur fat and ur metabolism slows. If ur body is left like this for long periods of time ur metabolism may not bounce back at all, but studies say potentially for around 7 years. Ur logic is deeply flawed, as variations of calorie deficits exists and it is possible for someone to starve to death. Just bc u are in starvation mode and ur metabolism is slowed it doesn’t mean u can’t starve.

I like the sweat fitness apps for women because it’s give you multiple beginner workout options for full body, abs, cardio, arms, leg, etc and also gives you some yummy healthy food choices. Then after that I started looking at fasting and calorie deficit. A calorie deficit is when you burn more calories and eat less calories. There is also this other fasting thing I have been looking at is when you basically eat healthy food and drink a lot of water then stop eating at 8pm then start eating again in the morning but I haven’t tried it yet so when I do i’ll give you an update. A yt girlie who has also helped me is glow with jo because she helps with burning a lot of calories while not using equipment and basically just walking. So the body can create calories out of nothing. Running is the worst form of cardio when it comes to maintaining muscle. Also muscle is what keeps your body burning calories so the less muscle you have the lower your calories will have to be.

    Reading some of the comments by women, I don’t think we are eating enough calories. Below 1,200 doesn’t sound like it’s enough and you’re working out. 1,200 could be considered to low. It’s not just about the calories, but the nutrients as well. Our nutrients can be too low as well.

    You can reply to and argue with me all you want, but a lot of comments in the thread here are correct and you can't deny reality. You were not eating only 1200 calories and not losing weight. Some possibilities are...
    1) You don't know how to track calories accurately. Science shows that most people vastly underreport how much they eat.
    2) You're lying about how little you eat because you don't want to be judged for your eating habits.
    3) You're simply trolling your audience.
    Also, going by your replies in this thread, if you feel the need to resort to bragging "I'm a Dietitian" to validate your own comment or cherry picking and citing/linking a source (e.g. an article you simply wrote yourself as if you're an authoritative source) without any explanation, you clearly don't have a leg to stand on and is really a way of saying, "I have no counterargument to your comment."
    Regardless, hopefully one day, you are honest with yourself and actually decide to take accountability for your eating and lifestyle habits, and learn some integrity and moral values.
    Edit: Unless you're like a very petite woman who's not very active, then that's a different story. But here, I can clearly see that is not your case.

    • @HungryHobby
      @HungryHobby  9 місяців тому +1

      I never said that my blog was an authoritative post. It's where I voice my own opinions and facts about the research I've read. I'm trying to translate my thoughts on the research not prove my point.
      But, since you are basically telling me I'm a liar here is a study showing that in fact persistent metabolic adaptation DOES occur after extreme dieting: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4989512/
      This happened to me in 2013, so over 10 years ago. I was -122 lbs 5'6" (not the pregnant woman you see in the video, literally made this video when I was 6 months pregnant thats why the song playing with the video is "I remember when" ) I was running 4-5 miles a day and eating 1000-1200 calories a day. I had been eating 1200 calories for 2-3 years at this point. I initially had lost 35 lbs doing this, but then the weight loss stopped and anytime I went over 1200 I would gain weight, so I started running more. Then about 3 months after I entered grad school to become a Dietitian, I was still tracking as I had when I initially lost the weight and maintained it, but regardless of eating 1200 calories I was gaining weight. And yes I was running 4-5 miles about 3 times a week and doing hard cardio group classes the other days. The extreme and prolonged stress caused my RMR to adapt. I got off the birth control pill around this time and didn't have a period because I had hypothalamic amenorrhea. Google it. It means you are not eating enough calories to let your body have a cycle. It's not like I just woke up one day and tried to eat only 1200 calories and started gaining weight. No. This was after a few years of literal starvation.
      I did a lot of reverse dieting and strength training, worked on my hormones, etc. I'm now able to lose weight at 1500-1800 calories and maintain at around 2500 calories. I keep my weight around 130, that's where I like the way I look and I can still have a period/cycle.
      You can continue to tell me that I'm just "trying to get views" or trolling my audience. Truth is, I'm just trying to share that if you crash freaking diet your metabolism will respond and it takes a long time to work yourself out of it and be very frustrating. Given all the comments on this post I think it needs to be heard. But if you want to believe that I'm lying, a troll, or just too stupid to know how to track despite teaching others how to do it for over a decade now I can't stop you.

    • @giuseppeferrara952
      @giuseppeferrara952 9 місяців тому +3

      @@HungryHobby That makes no sense. If metabolic adaptation really worked that way, kids in Africa or in poverty countries with a food shortage would be overweight despite "starving" themselves for a long period of time. That way, they wouldn't ever have to worry about dying of hunger, even if stranded on a deserted island.
      Plus, your reply totally ignores the law of thermodynamics as if "moving more" and/or "eating less" didn't help you to lose weight (you just mentioned all the activity you did on top of your 4-5 mile run). The reality is anyone who gained weight only did so by overeating for a certain period of time (or calorie surplus). There's simply no other way.
      As for that study you cherry picked and linked, claiming that participants experienced "metabolic adaptation" and couldn't lose more weight, how do you actually know all the underlying factors? How do you know all of the participants were consistent with their eating and exercise routine? They could have unknowingly worked out more intensely, fidgeted, or walked more steps on some days than others, or even could have binged in secret on some days. No one is going to follow them 24/7/365 to know what they are doing all the time. Just watch the show "Secret Eaters" and that'll illustrate what I mean.
      Oh, wait. Unless, you happened to find the quantum gate to calorie deficit and weight gain. In that case, you can disregard my initial comment, and consider the laws of thermodynamics are not real. I guess we don't ever have to worry about world hunger and adrenal fatigue. Now, our bodies are just closed loop systems that are on autoregulation. 🤪
      If laws of thermodynamics aren't real, can you enlighten me about reality? Oh, do wizards, goblins, and witches exist? Is there a Hogwarts in our world? I guess nowadays we have people flying on Nimbus 2000s. Maybe you found that Capriccio spell, or the revealing charm on how to find that quantum gate. 🙃

    I wanna tell you guys one thing. If you are doing a 1200 cal diet, and ONLY doing cardio, you won’t see the results that fast. However, if you combine your 1200 cal diet with WEIGHT TRAINING, you will see the results faster. I already lost 2.5 lbs in my first week. The other key is to know when and how your body begins to break down what you consume. If you are eating later in the day, and eating as soon as you wake up, and you generally have an early morning routine, you are in fact breaking your fasting and cutting that process short. This is when intermittent fasting would be beneficial. You do NOT have to eat less, just less often. Follow a 16:8 rule. End your final meal around like 5-6. Go to bed around 8:30 or 9 pm. Wake up, drink coffee, chug some water, go to the GYM AND LIFT WEIGHT (it helps with fat burning and tones the muscles underneath) and finish your workout with 10 minutes on the stair master and then 10 minutes speed walking on the treadmill (if you hate running like I do). When you get home, drink water, and around 10 or 11, start your first meal. 8 hours from the point where you start your meal, that’s your window to eat. Count your calories. Keep them in the 1200 cal range. End your 8 hour eating window with your finale meal. And repeat. I hope this helps. Again, I’ve lost 2 lbs. 🤍 (I know all bodies are not the same. Just hope this helps someone! You don’t have to do the fasting 16:8 plan if you don’t want. I just whole heartedly recommend if anything, you end your meals earlier so your body can start fasting earlier throughout the night till morning so it can immediately start breaking down those fats.
    Ps: when you weigh yourself, do it in the mornings AFTER you’ve used the bathroom. That’s your real weight. Weighing yourself after you’ve consumed all day is going to play tricks on your mind.

      I agree! switching to weight training has been the best thing ever. I still do cardio but not as much.
