So Dan.... I don't know you personally... But... I love you dearly man... you're the kindest most genuine human being on the planet... please be well, blessed and prosperous in all you do.. keep on with your joyful persona... so close your eyes and go to that "Dan place", where every harmonic rings true !! and I'll keep smiling every time I see your videos......
+Letzrockitrite ah, that's so nice, thanks so much. Peace and blessings to you too L :))
Letzrockitrite hear hear!! I love dan and mick. This is my fav show and channel on tubeland.
Letzrockitrite now kiss
instaBlaster...
Dan, there's a bridge that was developed to fix the intonation on these guitars that Tom Bukovac helped create. It's sold by Music City Bridge. The Stud Finder will fix your intonation woes and doesn't require any modifications to the body itself.
That IS a very rare bird!!! I've had mine since the early 70's and stumped many a guitar tech that called it a Melody Maker or SG Junior, but a long time ago I researched the Serial number and verified it was a '61. But for whatever reason it doesn't have the head-stock decal that says Les Paul. And I'm ashamed to say I put Schallers on it around '75 or 6. Played it for years and years, used it as dedicated slide for a while. Got stolen and recovered around '87. What a soldier!!! Still sounds sweet as ever, could use a fret job and new case but she's all mine. Almost sold it to the Japanese delegation at a NAMM show in the early 90's, but didn't and I'm sooooo glad. She's worth a million bucks to me. The finish is all checked and doesn't shine but when I look at it I see all my old friends and band-mates reflected thru the years and the memories that come rushing back. I'll never sell her. I love that guitar and always will. I really understand!!
I've got a 64 SG junior in my lap as I'm watching this - great tones! :)
My 67 is a beast!
I have a 64!
I wish you guys would do more episodes like this.
Most addicting channel on youtube by far, could listen to you guys play all day. Completely changed my standard on what "tone" should be. The end result has been me changing my tubes, speakers, guitars, pickups, pedals, cables, and am much better off for it. Thx for raising my standards. I have an idea for the ultimate TPS episode... Rack effects vs stomp boxes!
Damn it Dan you don't know what you are after doing to me. I played one years ago for a few weeks and fell in love with it. Whatever it was about it, the music just effortlessly flowed out of me when I played it. I was totally inspired when I played it. I had just about gotten it out of my system and you brought it all back! But they are great memories so thanks man. Love you guys
Dan. That guitar is stunning. absolutely stunning. The SG shape is my favorite of all time, and being a historical piece makes it so much better.
I just picked one of these up. Traded a high end Taylor acoustic for the 61 Jr. And an 85 Gibson Explorer. I couldn't be happier! The 61 has just blown me away with the raw rock tones. Roll off the tone control, and it gets buttery smooth. Put it full on, and it is as bright as you need. The tone control is like having a 3 way switch....
Yes to all of that, simply the best little guitar you could ever wish for. Simple design, lightweight and that monster single P90. Fab
What an Axe, Dan. Among all the beautiful Guitars at the Pedal Show, This one Here and Micks Collings 290 DC are my Favorites. The Sound and Look is awesome.
+Urban Dombert Hooray! Cheers Dombert
It is absolutely unbelievable how good that thing sounds. Holy crap.
I hated guitar pedals...I thought that they take away your creativity until i saw That pedal show... this guys especially Dan showed to me quite the oposite thing about pedals, so thank you Daniel!
+stipeur YES! Thanks Sti!
Just got an original 1961 Gibson les paul jr today and yes. So good.
Congrats! What a fabulous day!
Wow Dan, that guitar looks KILLER! Congratulations!
I love hearing you guys talk about your gear!!!
It was meant to be Dan. I have a Gibson Les Paul Special Tribute DC, which is a junior with two P90s. It is my absolute favorite guitar ever. I love it! So, I believe I understand how you feel.
I will say that is one of the best guitar tones I have ever heard. Wow.
Amazing guitar in the hands of a great player...awesome!
Awesome Jr Dan 👍
Back in the mid nineties, my buddy let me use his original 64 Jr SG, it sounded amazing too... then when Gibson released the 2018 Ltd run Jr’s , I went and tried one out at our local music store.
WOW, it played and sounded just like my buddies 64, so I ended up buying 2 2018 Jr’s.
I'll get mine on Wednesday 😉👍🏻
My friends dad has a 63 les Paul jr like this. It's the most incredible guitar. Very out of the ordinary for what I usually go for in a guitar, but theres just something about it that I cant quite put my finger on. Amazing instrument
One of my all time lust after guitars! I love SGs and own 2, 1 '91 Standard and a 60's Tribute with P90s(a monster of a guitar!) but I love Juniors and my lottery win dream is to buy as many vintage ones as I can! Everyone I've ever played has been amazing. Don't ever let that one go Dan!
I love, love, love LOVE Juniors! Dan, please include this guitar in more TPS videos
One P -90 and a ton of talent and you've got you my friend . Love that guitar...a simple tone machine....awesome .
I. love that about sgs. how easily and musically they go into feed back. that's a beauty of a guitar man!
I'm very happy to see that your gear presentations are back! Can't wait for the J20!
Nice to hear the history of this guitar, Dan. That P90 - DDUUUUUUUDDDDDEEEE!!
Thanks Dan for evoking Dave Gregory. Went to see some of the videos from Tin Spirits. So nice to see and hear Dave Gregory playing with you. Those great XTC songs from my youth (saw them in 1980 in Frejus). Still one of my favorite bands ever. And the cover of Yes' Roundabout with DG on guitar, man, what a pleasure !
You made my day !
I watched this video when it came out a few weeks ago and was lusting after your guitar. Bizarrely around three days later I received a call from a guitar-dealer friend who told me that he had a blemish-free 1961 Gibson SG Special. I took the plunge, traded in a Les Paul and purchased it. What a wonderful guitar... and as you say, a piece of history. The P90's are out of this world. I'm surprised that more people don't look at vintage Gibson LP Juniors and SG Juniors/Specials from say 1957 thru 1964... the Gibson golden years when you can pick them up for almost the same price as a Custom Shop Les Paul.
+Peter Marshall wow, well done Pete, sounds like you've scored a keeper :)
I’m a little late to this video. 7 years late to be exact but it still inspired me to get a 61 Junior myself. I’ve had it now a couple days and I couldn’t be happier with it. It is everything I’d hoped for and more. I understand what Dan meant when he said the same. To anyone on the fence about buying one, don’t miss out on the one you might be looking at. You won’t regret it. Just pull the trigger. 🤘😎👍
@@stephenbarrett7472 If only vintage Junior prices today were what they were back then. I bought a 1959 LPJ for £3600 back in 2017, and my immaculate 1961 SG Special for £5600. I let both go far too soon. Both beautiful guitars... but currently they're both at crazy prices in a very subdued market. Enjoy your purchase... I'm envious. ;)
I had an early 1961 SG/Les Paul Junior years ago exactly like yours with the seven screw pickguard, angled bridge and 50's style tophat knobs. I had to sell it but I was able to buy a 2019 SG Junior just 2 weeks ago. It's not a vintage but I'm happy with it.
Would you do a mini episode about Tin Spirits?
I liked the video before watching it because that guitar is fucking sweet.
Did anyone else notice that "Back in NYC" by Genesis was being played in the background? Great choice!
We used to play that in Tin Spirits, in fact we recorded a version on our first album Wired To Earth
@@ThatPedalShow I wasn't aware of your band. I listened to it! Nice work.
I just ordered the recent Epiphone Yungblud SG Junior and this video has me ITCHING to get it in my hands. It should arrive in a couple days, but that's a couple days too far away!
The more I play 335s, Teles, Strats, LPs....the more I think one day soon it'll be a single P90 with a volume knob and a good acoustic.
That thing sounds INCREDIBLE. Nice playing, too -- as always.
+50nuccio Mick here. You HAVE to have a mahogany/light/single P90 (or humbucker) guitar. Everyone has to have one. Too much awesomeness. And that one is spec-bloody-tacular
I have a LP Special DC w TWO p90's, it's awesome, but yes -- I hear what you're saying. A guitar with one killer pup and a knob for "MORE."
Cheers from Chicago, you guys do a GREAT job.
Mike Oldfield (my musical idol) rocked one (not the same one, mind-the first was stolen) all through Hergest Ridge, Ommadawn, QE2, and Crises.
I love these mid week shows. Would you consider a mid week Q&A show?
+kidgloves2 yeah, we want to try and find a Q&A format that works, would love to do something like this :)
Historic rock is that guitars genre. Beautiful, classic, simple, just add a Plexi! :)
So cool...I have a modern reissue similar to that & I love it!!! That original must be soooo nice to have & I'm happy you were able to aquire it...I'm a little jealous
Beautiful guitar with great tone.
I like Juniors better than Specials because the internal neck joint on Jrs extend past where you would route for a Special's neck PU. I think the structural difference matters..
I'm about to buy one... OK, done!
BACK IN NEW YORRRRRRRRK CITAYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!
+wgb01001 one of my favourite songs
That Pedal Show Have you ever seen/heard Francis Dunnery's acoustic version? It's really beautiful and a different interpretation. Great song.
Back when 91X radio station (San Diego) was Punk/New Wave, you would hear this song regularly... even though it first aired almost a decade earlier! Kind of a genre setting song there, IMO... Hairless Heart is another great one!
Never seen one of these in a store for less than 2 grand. Must've been some deal. Worth every penny no doubt.
I got mine in 79 for 300 bucks. Well played. The guy had had it in his window for 18 months or so so I talked him down from 400
Beautiful guitar Dan! Congratulations! Cheers!
this was an awsome video... more of this please. .. other guitars, amps and pedals that has a special meaning and maybe a good story behind it. Maybe Mick also has a few to bring to a show and tell video.... total guitar geek here.. And loving it !!!!!
+Howie_Capowi Check out the Our Guitars & Gear playlist on the UA-cam channel Howie. We're making more too, including the amps.... Cheers!
My dad owns this guitar. I love it so
Your dad rocks.
That's a Keeper...what a beauty
This is my favourite sounding guitar on TPS. Actually the Krautster is effing awesome too.
My first electric guitar bought in 1963, I was 10, just like that one. Can't remember what I plugged it into. Takes me back (and shows my age!)
Beautiful guitar man. I had to get rid of my 73' SG and hate it, wasn't near that nice but was loaded with similar p90's and like you said would play anything from blues,to country,to heavy metal. and just felt like butter to play it.
Return of the Tuesday stuff!
I just bought a SG 2019, same guitar and same bridge... How come you never got a compensated one...?
I'm wondering what that little monster says through >KOT>EGO>TIMELINE>MESA LONESTAR clean channel cranked!!! You could give us a whole episode with tone bites!
I have a friend with a '59 and i concur that it's quite special.
I really dug these. I've been ogling the production ones for a few a while now..and think it makes fantastic sense for my next guitar in so many ways.. I just have trouble when it comes to the price, justifying buying this bare bones thing against all the elaborate things other brands offer at that price point. Or even this brand! It doesn't cost much less than a Les Paul standard, or SG standard!
I'm a working class guy who has spent many years in and out of work. So when I have work, I work so hard to save up so little at a time...it's a big old stretch to get to a couple of grand ( AUD)... I don't know if I'll be able to go through with it!
I would so love one though...in TV yellow...or white.
If I had some old GIbsons, I'd have one of these, a Les Paul DC Jr from a few years later, and a Les Paul DC Lite.
SG Junior, up there with the Esquire! Love single pickup guitars!
Dan- 57 year old guitar.....wow! Did the seller share any history of the guitar?
Sounds amazing.
That's some stunning tone
YOU NAIL THE STEVE HACKETT TONES FROM WTLLDOBWY, YOU GUYS ARE THE BEST.
Back in the early 80s, when time came to buy my first good guitar, I spent all day in the used room upstairs at a place called Rock Bottom in Croydon. I only had £300 or so, but in those days that would buy you a nice Guitar. I ended up with a really great mid-70's Tele, but the one I really wanted was a Les Paul Jr. It must have been a late 50s one, a single cut. I could afford it, but I was persuaded that a one-pickup guitar wouldn't be versatile enough. I now know that that is not true. One of my only regrets. That and not buying a 1964 strat in Fiesta Red for £180. The follies of youth....
3:16 That's some Genesis in the background! Back in NYC from The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway! Awesome!!! :D
Now I kinda mentally interview myself about my guitars. How sad and pathetic is that?
Rafael Andrade we all do it mate I wouldn't worry
Haha, I always pretend i'm in one of these rig rundown videos xD
+1!!
Monkyman245 me too
Well I'm sad and pathetic...
Hey Dan,
if you're reading this, THANK YOU! I've learned so much from your videos and watched a few of them more than once finding new useful information.
I wanted to ask you about one of your other guitars... If I'm not mistaking you used to play a Duesenberg Fullerton TV? Did you let it go? If so, why?
Nice guitar. I don't remember ever seeing it in a video before.
I've rewatched this video so many times, I'm always blown away by this guitar every time it appears on the show, it always sounds so... right. I love it.
And so I've slowly scrapped some cash together, made some rounds in a couple local stores... and I am now the incredibly proud, incredibly giddy owner of a 2019 SG Jr. Bit of elbow grease, polishing, some minor setting up and fresh strings later... and it's an addictive, wonderful thing to play! Light and it doesn't even neck dive. Even got a bit of windmilling big chords in already.
Out of curiosity Dan, what does the resistance Dogear in your Guitar measure out as? Through a short path-lead, the one on the one I snagged read out at about 7.83k and it gets that rude, full but twangy vibe. From what I read up that seems about the right ballpark for vintage tones, but they also varied a lot.
Thank you kindly for all the good tones and all the fun, interesting, educational videos you and Mick have been putting out through the years, especially the last few topsy-turvy one! And keep rocking!
Beautiful guitar. Sounds amazing
Do you have the "neck dive" problem Daniel? Cheers
Such a beautiful guitar!!
sweet, Mon
love it!!! Love SG !!!! I have SG special with p90's ;)
NIce to hear a bit of Genesis, Back in NYC 😉
+BeesWaxMinder love me a bit of LLDOB ;)
What an absolute tone machine. I reckon I could survive with one pickup, no problem.
sounds killer
I saw a Burny SG junior on sale that day for approximately 250 pounds (MYR 1600) and I am so emotional that it got reserved by the other 😢
very happy to see this feature return.
do the J!
is that “back in nyc” i hear in the background around 3:30 ?
Yes it is! Starts around 3:16, I loved that detail
I'm surprised Gibson has not done a reissue of that model! They've done everything else...
That sounds amazing
sg of Bertignac !
When are you going to do a show on speakers and cabs????
+Joe Wilson When we can work out what questions to ask. What are yours? Cheers!
Whats the difference between different types of speaker e.g Vintage 30's, cream backs, green backs...Speaker size 10" vs 12" , numbers of speakers, 2x12 vs 1x12... Types of magnets ...The difference between expensive and cheap cabs, is certain wood better than others?...The questions are endless!
I think a comparison between open and closed back cabinets would be a good idea for such a video.
Let's see the board!
+Roman Roman Details in the description....
Lovely. I have a 2011 model, with the dyed baked maple fingerboard. I don't mind a bit as I love maple boards generally. I am recently introduced to P.90s and love the ferocious tone. On mine, the pick-up top is parallel to the guitar body, not the strings. This puts the left hand edge very close to the strings and they can hit it when I play hard. Are they all like that ?
God I love these videos.
Back in New York City!!
+Ray Polakovic yeah baby
First time I've seen you rocking something with two cutaways!
That is, seriously, a very very cool guitar.
Out of curiosity have you ever had the experience of playing a Strandberg?
Hey Dan..I`ve been waiting for you to put this review up mate! What a beautiful example of a classic guitar..I have a `63..Love,love,love it too!One question though...how is yours so bloody quiet? lol!
+pete james cheers Pete, I just find that spot in the 360 field and try to work with it, there's no noise suppression or anything like that, just good isolated power to the pedals, isolation between the amps, and the power of RAWK!! ;)
Superb tone! But I wonder how you get no noise with the P90 pickup?!!
Oh it’s noisy alright! Just whip that volume down as soon as you stop playing. Boy is it noisy!
Awesome Dan! Did you see they reissued these last year, did you get a chance to try one? I nearly bought one because I liked yours so much!
I have a NEW SHOW TOPIC ( I think? ), if you have not covered it yet ? How about doing a show, Dedicated to: Selecting A New PedalBoard !!! Example: Pedaltrain vs. ( VooDoo Labs ) Dingbat vs. Pedaldeck ( UK ) vs. SKB vs. Gator vs. Westcoast vs. D.I.Y. ect . . . Pro's / Con's, Price, Value, Size-Options, Durability. Quality of Carrying Case ? - Just a Thought ? - Michael Caz - NYC -
Back in New York City!
+lucas kendikian yeah baby :)
LOL. I made the exact same post, with one more exclamation point. I literally got goose bumps on my back when I heard it.
lucas kendikian Haha, I did as well. He was literally playing my song!
Thanks for the GAS Dan :)
After checking prices I might need to find an equally sympathetic / desperate seller as you did though!
Lovely Guitar
Kind regards
I really really really need a guitar with P-90s....this or a Les Paul Jr (like Mick's Collings)
so many gutars add a lot more stuff and come up short to this simple slab of mahogany and a p90
Hey Dan love the Les Paul, & I recently picked up a 59 Melody Maker. You stated you went light on gauge because you were worried about damaging the neck but you never stated what gauge. I run D'addario NYXL 1052 Light Top/Heavy Bottoms. Do you think this would put too much tension on the neck? I run your standard E or E flat tuning depends on songs
friend of mine who built me the pick ups for my Les Paul( pictured on the left) also built me a set of P90 for my other Les Paul. The man owns a 1957 Les Paul junior it is one of two 57 Les Paul Junior's I've been privilege to play. I would love to own one it is the best rock guitar I have ever played in my life. but you can play anything on my beautiful R9 Les Paul has nothing on it one p-90 pickup kicks the shit out of every other guitar I would play that guitar straight into a Tweed Deluxe with maybe a little Reverb or trim but nothing else and using your volume knob you can get any damn said you wanted to unless you were looking for metal
What is a lightning stopbar, is that an aftermarket part?
I swear this video was in my sub box briefly about 3h ago.
The Inebriati Same here. Proof that Dan & Mick exist beyond time & space.
