This is a demonstration of a softlock, where the game can not be advanced but you can still technically enter the save file and move around without being able to meaningfully progress the file. A hardlock would be trying to do something and the game fatals every time, like if there was a bug where if you logged out inside a boss arena and then when you logged back into that file the game forcefully closed itself, that would be a hardlock. A softlock can often be reproduced by following steps in game, sometimes to figure out why a hardlock is occuring you need to use crash reports or dumps created by the process because whatever has the game tripping up might not be directly tied to the steps that led you to the crash, its not easily reproduced.

A hard lock can be anything that happens in game that doesn't have an in game solution to solve it. Example being the game quick saves as you die, and the game loads you in to just die again straight away.
@@Ixxlostinabox wrong. hardlock is when the game crashes, forcing a reload or a reset. a softlock is when the game still works, but you have "locked yourself out" of progressing the game. here's an example: skyrim on ps3 has a hardlock caused by a save file getting to big, it becomes unable to load, and just keeps trying to load infinitely until you reset the console. this is a hardlock that bricks your game. in Morrowind, you can kill npcs that are vital for progression. or get a bounty to be higher than 2k. in either case, you are unable to progress NORMALLY. you can still beat the game, but it requires some really "out there" thinking. in daggerfall, if you wait more than a month to contact the envoy, he will leave, and the game is PERMANENTLY unfinishable. that's ALSO a soft lock. because you can still "play" the game, and interact with MOST of its aspects, BUT the main story is no longer able to be completed. in daggerfall, you get the ability to teleport to dungeons, some of those teleports will just crash the game. because they will teleport you to somewhere the game engine cant handle. that's a HARDLOCK. but you can still reload a savefile and continue.

Elden ring have online features and really popular, that's why it have anticheat. But From Software really should add some kind of slope/invible wall in order to get out from "bucket"/don't even fall in it
Well, fortunately, it always lets you play offline without EAC enabled. So yes, this is absolutely an option, and then afterward, you can switch it back on if you want to play online.
In the DLC, in the specimen storehouse near the first grace there is a corner you can get stuck in. It will make your character permanently in the fall animation. Atleast you can tp out of it but it was kinda dumb when it happened to me
feeling like this video was too deceptive honestly, the thumbnail implies that the player was surprised about this when it's seemingly impossible to do on accident and that's on top of the extremely incorrect definition of a bucket which on it's own would be fine but in the absence of any substance is less fine. this appears to be set up to sound like a warning of an actual dangerous glitch that players would need to watch out for when in reality it's giga-pointless and about as impactful of advice as don't delete your save file or it will get deleted

The Fetid Pots, Bloody Slash, Blood Blade, Seppuku, Assassin's Approach, and the new Thiollier's Concoction. There are tons of self amage options, so shouldn't be too bad to escape one of these even in the extremely unlikely case you fall into one. The Fetid Pots in particular are convenient since they're cheap and can be crafted anywhere (unlike the weapon skills that need to be equipped).
PSA: At least on PC, mods like the debug tool and cheat tables for Elden Ring exist, which allow you to force a warp. You can find them on Nexus Mods. If you don't use mods otherwise and are worried about being banned, get a mod that allows you to launch Elden Ring in offline mode with the anti-cheat disabled. If you're on console, well I hope the solution this video shows works for you. 🙏
You can probably get out by either inflicting oneself with a debuff that kills like poison, or use an ash/sorcery that leaps you above ground, and if you don't have these, then if you have a taunter's tongue, you use it to have invaders come in and try and kill you, the invasion is a last resort.
funny is.. 1 day before you post this video, i found a place, where in DLC catacombs i get to stuck in a wall between the elevator of catacombs and its closest wall, where my character was unable to move, jump, roll and even weapons/incantations, that make your character move, was not working at all. i was stuck in exact same place. exiting game did nothing, as it return me to same place in a wall. and with me being unable to use teleportation (because i was in catacombs) and being unable to use memory of grace (idk why i wasnt been able to use it, even tho i been able to use any other items). and i had no items that could kill me on my own, because i put all the base game weapons (including bloody katana) away in my chest, and raw meat dumplings was not enough to kill me with how much hp i had.. luckily enough for me, i was still been able to use multiplayer items, so i was able to lure pvp invader in my world and after 30 minutes of being stuck in a wall and searching for an invader, my savior been able to kill me inside a wall and save me from loosing all of my first dlc playthrough progress
There's a spot in one catacomb and I can't remember which one where they forgot to put collision on one of the walls and you can walk right through it and fall to your death in the void.
Alt+F4 in general or whilst reload can get rid of the trapped effect that forbids fast travel. Also task-managering whilst loading or reloading the map can set your location to some sort of "default spawnpoint" in that "sector" of the genuine area. It s how the Farum Azula Skip works. You go to 4 Belfries and travel to farum Azula via the warpgate. It will drop you on that overlook ruin where you look down to Crumbling Farum Azula. With that part of the map loaded you can travel back to belfries and reenter the portal that takes you to the lookout site of Azula again. But when the loading screen is above 60% and underneath 85% - where it s usually sticking before quickly stuttering up, you want to alt F4 or end-task the game. If you did it correctly you will spawn in Crumbling Farum Azula starting site where the game only takes you after beating Firegiant. There was one that worked similarly in Lyendell to skip Draconic Tree Sentinel but it got patched as "impossible". Saying that, I still got it to work once after like 2 tries to show off my "crazy speedrunner tactics" to my friend but never again after. I was trying out a new build, on my like 12th or 16th playthrough). I leave each of them around lvl 120 up to underneath lvl 200 and was mostly caring about the ressources to throw together my character as fast as possible. Watching a new speedrun clip really helped me out on catching up on stuff since I was really bad at zip glitching. (Which is another way out of anything btw, but I personally could never really make it work xD ) However if you dont play some sort of spiral mage build like me you can just play through the game normally. It s way faster and linear whilst showering you with runes that I would require dragon cheese for.
hardlock is when you can't do anything at all like you can't even load into the savefile type stuff softlock is when you can still play the game but you just can't progress, like if you manage to delete the lord vessel from your inventory in ds1 (though for that the game has the firelink chest)
Speaking of the DLC, I ended up nuking my own save file. I took the back entrance to the Shadow Keep, drained the water, entered the Specimen Storehouse proper, all without resting or dying. Then continued clearing the storehouse up and down and all around still without dying or resting. I did notice something was wrong when Freyja was just standing as if she were attacked instead of in her usual animation of rummaging through the books. I spoke to Freyja and Ansbach up until I needed to reload the area for Ansbach to give me the letter to Freyja. So instead of finally resting, i saved and quit to keep everything dead. When I loaded back in, the game would crash before the text "Specimen Storehouse" could fully fade in. And this crash was inescapable, it happened every time I lpaded my character. My best guess is it was a combination of taking the most butt-backwards way to get in there, plus killing so many enemies and placing so many rainbow stones that the game could not handle loading everything back as it was when I saved and quit and reload! Luckily I had a backup to restore to... even if it was 5 hours behind!
So yesterday I got stuck in a corner in one of the catacombs in the DLC, couldn't TP or use Mogh's Invitation and had no sepuku. I had the madness torch but it did so little damage I would run out of mana first. Luckily I could craft fetid pots and it took 12 of them to finally take me out. That was spooky
Soft lock you can move your character around and access menus like normal, but due to a design flaw in the game (or glitch) you can't progress. Hardlock means the game is frozen and inputs are unresponsive.
Just use a noclip mod and make sure the game is on offline and ur good, in a hard lock you just need to find a mod on nexus where it "decorrupts" your save file and ur good again, gotta love those
What softlocking and hardlocking means really depends on who you ask Some people (like me) are used to softlocking being used to refer to a state where you're stuck but a reset will fix it, and hardlocking meaning you're permanently stuck and need to make a new save For others a softlock means that you're permanently stuck and can't get out, and a hardlock means that you can't even access your save anymore or that the game crashed (which referring to a game crash as a hardlock makes zero sense, it's just a game crash unless you somehow manage to get in a state where the game will always crash) I prefer the first set of definitions since both share the same "you're stuck" part but there's an actual difference, softlock being recoverable and hardlock being unrecoverable. It's also more oftenly used with that definition
Soft lock: Software is operating correctly but progression is halted. Hard lock: Software is no longer operating; crash, freeze, halt, blue screen, ect and no further progress can be made usually due to save file corruption or crash on load. Your "buckets" are potential softlocks.
I experienced a iteration of this in the seamless coop mod due to having a bad connection that day i dc'd during the beating radahn cutscene and got sent back to table with an inability to tp but i joined my friend's world and rested at radahn's bonfire it fixed it. Invaders may also be able to help in those playing vanilla.. for once besides farming them for runes/souls/gold and a crystal/estus/crimson tear flask refill
Damm , gotta say. Im very impressed by fromsoft, i been jump8ng and droping everywhere and have not found a propper ""bucket"" before watching this video. Neat!
not me watching this video and developing the fear of accidentally beating morgott, ladder warping and then blowing myself up mid air with a flask to jump on top of some random tower and therefore softlocking my game.
My first thought is to use a duel sign to get someone to take you out for you so you can respawn. I don't know if group passwords work with duel signs but if they do if you have a friend that seems like one way out of it.
Maybe saying you don't know the difference between soft lock and hard lock was a bait for engagement but if it was you beat me. Anyways, this would be a soft lock. Soft lock is when you get stuck in a position where the game is still running, but you can't progress any further because of some glitch. A hard lock on the other hand is a situation where the game literally freezes, pretty uncommon in modern games, but a hard lock would be the kind of situation where you need to turn off your console or force quit the game to even be able to start playing again.
Please don't use this anti-bucket rhetoric. Instead of saying "can delete your save file" please use "engages player to start a new journey". Thank you.
This actually happened to my original character, I went into another NG+ cycle to prep for the DLC release, fought radahn, and upon spawning back in from the cutscene my character was stuck on some of the weapons in the arena. Couldn't destroy them, couldn't jump out, and wasn't allowed any form of teleportation out. quit and re-open did nothing. After a lot of despair that my original release day character might be soft-locked I remembered one final option, and shot at blaidd with my crossbow, he killed me, respawned at the site of grace right next to him that I hadn't even activated yet, then I ran away until he de-aggroed and went to the turtle for forgiveness. It was genuinely wild. Edit: I made this comment before watching the video, I got trapped in radahns arena, not by this complex series of events. Unfortunately I didn't have any items in my inventory with which to end my own character, so Blaidd was the only option. But genuinely, turns out you can get stuck exiting radahns cutscene if you're standing on certain piles of weapons on the ground.
A hard lock is what we generally refer to as "freezing". Essentially, the entire game locks up, nothing works or very few things. Usually the only way to fix this is to either shut out the program entirely or turn off the system. A softlock is when yoy still gave mostly proper functioning, like abive where you can still run around snd use items and nenus as normal. But youre still locked, and cant do anything really.
Almost had this happen in the Ruined Lava Forge Intake. Got stuck on some fuckin small swords sticking out if the ground. Almost killed the golem next to me out of habit, when I remembered this video. Thanks for that
there is one in scorpion river catacombs, in a room just after the basilisks, if u jump into the corner just next to the ladder you will get stuck (the only way i found to get outta there was to use ancient meteoric ore greatswords ash of war"
The solution is to always just carry an emergency "Thiollier's Concoction" which has absolutely zero use case other than instantly killing your character, so you'll never accidentally not have it like other damaging consumables of ashes of war. Edit: Or if possible use Taunter's Tongue which you SHOULD have in any normal playthrough which can summon invaders to kill you.
A "hardlock" is generally more akin to something thay causes the game to just be, unplayable. Say for example if Torrent takes fall damage and that freezes the game, that would be a hardlock. A "softlock" is defined as "you are able to play the game but you are unable to make progress". These buckets would be softlocks. Sure you can play the game, you can launch it, move around, and exit the game normally, but you cant make any progress.
There is an other bucket... But much larger.. Placidusax's arena. If you progress with the story, get to farum azula and manage to kill the godskin duo and head straight to Placidusax's arena and kill him without dying and touching any grace on the way, then sitting at the arena's grace, you won't be able to get to Malekith and finish the story
Softlocks are either temporary in nature or fixable by mundane means like quitting out etc. Hardlocks are completely irreversible *most of the time* and require cheating to fix IE warping or noclipping with CE.
I imagine just about any player will have a couple of items on them that can be used to damage yourself - either a sword with Bloody Slash or some of the pot bombs. Pot bombs can even be crafted while stuck if you don't have them prepared.
I'm guessing that's also the same debuff of when you agree to help Ranni. And then the game goes weird and puts invisible walls around you and doesn't let you teleport or do anything until you've unpacked a bunch of dialogue from her and her buddies.
This was easy to do when all consoles had a disc tray. I used to insert a ham sandwich into my disc tray whenever I wanted to destroy my console. It does nothing to the game file though, I just couldn't play anymore. Then they came up with the cloud save where I could play that save file on PC and it ruined everything.
One of my characters is stuck in Ranni's rise, she tells me to talk with Blaidd, Iji and Seluvis but Blaidd isn't there. No matter what I do I can't get out. I can't warp out either.
Softlock is for software, Hardlock is for hardware. So if you threw your console into an actual bucket and locked up the graphics card to be stuck rendering the same frozen frame that would be a hardlock
If you do manage to do this and you happen to be on pc: First disable anticheat then download a cheat engine table that allows teleporting... profit. if you're on console then idk, you might be cooked

in daggerfall, if you wait more than a month to contact the envoy, he will leave, and the game is PERMANENTLY unfinishable. that's ALSO a soft lock. because you can still "play" the game, and interact with MOST of its aspects, BUT the main story is no longer able to be completed.
in daggerfall, you get the ability to teleport to dungeons, some of those teleports will just crash the game. because they will teleport you to somewhere the game engine cant handle. that's a HARDLOCK. but you can still reload a savefile and continue.
@@Ixxlostinaboxthat kinda thing happened to me when playing conduit 2. I hit a checkpoint right as I fell into a pit so I’d die and then the game would just reload me right into the pit in an endless loop. Had to restart the whole game
There's a spot in the new Darklight Catacombs where you can get stuck, in the same area there's also a bugged wall where you can fallout the map.
I’ll have to check that out 👀
I died to that wall a couple of days ago lol, I wonder if it's fixed now
There is one such wall in the Scorpion River Catacombs. Is that the one you meant? Or are there two DLC Catacombs with a wall that is missing collisions?
@@To_teyoc i also died in that wall in scorpin catacombs, left a message about bloodstains
You can get out of that one if you have a weapon that has loretta's slash or the unique version on the wing scythe.
Gonna add seppuku in every character I have for safety, thx man you are save saver
Yeah, Seppuku is a great idea. That or the Trina potion from the DLC.

Now I wanna see a perma bucket speedrun category.
I attempted a few runs of this actually! Best time for the Leyndell bucket was around 45 minutes, best time for the Radahn bucket was about 27 minutes.
I accidentally fell below a bridge in a DLC dungeon but after a few seconds I found the stairs the devs put there to prevenet softlocks.
One of my favorite buckets used to be the Coliseum statue in roundtable hold. On release you could jump behind it but they already patched it
I remember this one! Gone but not forgotten :(
Made me feel so cozy in there. I want that bucket back!
I actually managed to get a message behind there before it got patched. I can still see it behind there but there's no way to actually read it.
@@thrakatak2645 Same!
I find it interesting that the inputs for doing the ladder warp(release sprint and block at the same time) are the exact same as what's used for the "perfect block" technique used mostly in pvp.
That is actually insanely interesting.

Thats when you whip out the cheat engine and teleport yourself out of there. Another big reasons games shouldn't bother with invasive anti-cheat
If you're on PC, go offline and use Cheat Engine to either NoClip or change your coordinates.
and maybe start the game without EAC while doing so :)
In the DLC, in the specimen storehouse near the first grace there is a corner you can get stuck in. It will make your character permanently in the fall animation. Atleast you can tp out of it but it was kinda dumb when it happened to me
Yeah, happened to me too but at least there are tons of enemies that can kill you assuming you haven't killed the yet :p
Huh I thought the ‘fall for long enough and you die’ would fix that but I guess not
@@Hello-lf1xs i might've not waited long enough, but as i said you can tp put of it

feeling like this video was too deceptive honestly, the thumbnail implies that the player was surprised about this when it's seemingly impossible to do on accident and that's on top of the extremely incorrect definition of a bucket which on it's own would be fine but in the absence of any substance is less fine. this appears to be set up to sound like a warning of an actual dangerous glitch that players would need to watch out for when in reality it's giga-pointless and about as impactful of advice as don't delete your save file or it will get deleted
I think you're taking this way too seriously.

What’s the soundtrack in the video??? Great choice and sounds familiar
Was wondering the same thing, I know I’ve heard it before
It's the Steam Gardens kingdom music from Mario Odyssey
Always have a weapon with bloody slash and seppuku or raw meat dumplings in your inventory
Or other items that can poison, rot, or kill you.
Seppuku and Bloody slash seems to be the best bet, considering even doing the weapon art without any FP still makes you lose HP
(Which is another way out of anything btw, but I personally could never really make it work xD )
However if you dont play some sort of spiral mage build like me you can just play through the game normally. It s way faster and linear whilst showering you with runes that I would require dragon cheese for.
How long did it take you to make that camera move so smoothly to the ladder around the 2:37 mark?
Flame Cleanse Me just gets more and more goated with time.
hardlock is when you can't do anything at all
like you can't even load into the savefile type stuff
softlock is when you can still play the game but you just can't progress, like if you manage to delete the lord vessel from your inventory in ds1 (though for that the game has the firelink chest)
So it's not a bucket and it doesn't delete your save file. Anything else you feel the need to lie about? 😂
Soft lock you can move your character around and access menus like normal, but due to a design flaw in the game (or glitch) you can't progress. Hardlock means the game is frozen and inputs are unresponsive.
If you manage to do this accidentely I think Elden Ring is not for you lol
Just use a noclip mod and make sure the game is on offline and ur good, in a hard lock you just need to find a mod on nexus where it "decorrupts" your save file and ur good again, gotta love those
What softlocking and hardlocking means really depends on who you ask
Some people (like me) are used to softlocking being used to refer to a state where you're stuck but a reset will fix it, and hardlocking meaning you're permanently stuck and need to make a new save
For others a softlock means that you're permanently stuck and can't get out, and a hardlock means that you can't even access your save anymore or that the game crashed (which referring to a game crash as a hardlock makes zero sense, it's just a game crash unless you somehow manage to get in a state where the game will always crash)
I prefer the first set of definitions since both share the same "you're stuck" part but there's an actual difference, softlock being recoverable and hardlock being unrecoverable.
I experienced a iteration of this in the seamless coop mod due to having a bad connection that day i dc'd during the beating radahn cutscene and got sent back to table with an inability to tp but
i joined my friend's world and rested at radahn's bonfire it fixed it.
Invaders may also be able to help in those playing vanilla.. for once besides farming them for runes/souls/gold and a crystal/estus/crimson tear flask refill
So... softlocking your game on purpose via a set of very specific glitches actually softlocks the game? Who could have guessed...
I don't know if group passwords work with duel signs but if they do if you have a friend that seems like one way out of it.
or just turn off internet connection, download cheat engine table and noclip yourself out... bruh

I keep getting conflicting definitions from twitch chat so I truly don’t know 😔 I think this definition makes the most sense to me tho
You seem to need to participate in the gameshow where you figure out what is and isn't a bucket...
Just turn off the anticheat, go offline, download a trainer and fly out of it. As simple as that
There’s always taunters tongue for pvp to get your self killed
Please don't use this anti-bucket rhetoric. Instead of saying "can delete your save file" please use "engages player to start a new journey". Thank you.
That’s so good lmao
So Carry around new poison bottle weapon with the weapon art that actually poisons you ha
Thanks for that

there is one in scorpion river catacombs, in a room just after the basilisks, if u jump into the corner just next to the ladder you will get stuck (the only way i found to get outta there was to use ancient meteoric ore greatswords ash of war"
...or as we best know them as, soft-locks
am so happy to be playing on pc because of the amount of available solutions to solve this esoteric problem 😭😭
You can just get a buddy and summon an invader.
*sigh* Install cheat engine, noclip out of there.
Sounds like it's impossible to softlock in Elden
A hard lock is when the game itself freezes
never played that game but very interesting 👍

Softlock is for software,
Hardlock is for hardware.
So if you threw your console into an actual bucket and locked up the graphics card to be stuck rendering the same frozen frame that would be a hardlock
If you do manage to do this and you happen to be on pc:
First disable anticheat then download a cheat engine table that allows teleporting... profit.
if you're on console then idk, you might be cooked
