I feel like I may have autism. I get socially awkward in public crowds. I want to make friends but I have a hard time opening up. I tried to see a therapist but she would talk later and never did. Who can I talk to because my mom doesn't believe I have it. What do I do?

Question (I don't know where to put it). How do you know you have a good psychiatrist? I had depression and I've been taking medicine for almost 5 years. And I only see him every 3 months for like 10 minutes. I feel like he doesn't care about me.

I’m probably going to ask more than one but spread it out : I always enjoy watching your videos kati!
How do I deal with a traumatic memory. I used to watch your videos a lot but someone who looked like you hurt me. I know you’re innocent . It’s like your video om transference. I think of my self as strong but it’s too much for me. I’m seeing a psychiatrist. I can’t get into therapy for my issues yet due to some difficulties. But your videos are like a breath of fresh air between long gaps between appointments.
My friends and psychiatrist are surprised I’m so insightful despite my psychosis . Your videos help with this !
I feel like I’m not believed when I tell people what happened or that I’m taking it to seriously being disrespected in the street. But the most evil thing is it is robbing me of my benefiting from your experience which is learning more about mental health issues from your videos!
Perhaps I should forgive her. Maybe force myself to watch your videos so the positive association can return!

    *Timestamps:*
1:45 How to deal with atypical anorexia how to deal with feeling not ill enough?
5:48 How do you deal with clients who don't make progress or continually self-sabotage? I'm BPD and so many therapists have gotten frustrated and irritated with me for this and basically made my BPD reactions and outbursts worse by seemingly 'abandoning' me.
13:06 Is it truly possible to fully recover from a mental illness or is it like asthma where it's always there but can be managed? So you always have to be aware of it but there are times where it doesn't flare up and you can live a normal, healthy life? Or can it fully go and someone can come to live life fully without having to worry about depression, anxiety or an ED again?
19:30 How do you maintain your mental health when you are in physical pain?
23:25 Could you do a video about PTSD being passed down generationally? Is the Holocaust the only example of this or is it present in other instances?
27:38 What do you do if a client has a plan to kill themselves in the future? Like not any time too soon but they have a plan for the next month for example?
34:43 Is there ANYTHING practical/tangible that a person can do when having a terrible body image moment or day? I need something more effective than just repeating affirmations... there must be something that can help! It’s the biggest roadblock to my ED recovery, I cannot tolerate my body so I give in to behaviors.
40:13 Can you recommend any tips to help stop painful past memories from suddenly popping into my head at random times of the day & night? I'm fed up & exhausted from reliving all the sad emotions it brings up.
45:29 Medication vs talk therapy for depression?

Dude generational trauma is SO real. Some of the older members of my extended family survived World War II (not the Holocaust corner of it) remarkably well...and their children are absolute train wrecks. It's like the trauma completely skipped the people it actually happened to and came to life in the next generation. I would love to read your book, especially now that we are engulfed by the COVID pandemic. I know it'll be a while, but I'll be looking forward to it!

Hi Kati, just wondering if you could do a video about how to stay sane in self-isolation? With many countries that are in lock down right now, things are getting challenging. My state in Australia has just shut down a lot of things I've taken for granted and universities are transitioning to online learning. Self-motivation is a little difficult for me right now... Kati I love this format! It is just like your old FAQ videos, but better because they are longer. I absolutely love everything about these videos because I find that it doesn´t matter if I am not struggling with an eating disorder, I still can benefit from listenting to others talk about their issues. Usually, I find that I am thinking the very same thing someone with PTSD does, even if I don´t actually have it. Overall, just know that this is amazing, keep up the good work!

Thank you for another very helpful and interesting video/podcast.
I have one addition to question no 3 that is helping me. I've been in therapy for almost a decade and overall it seems to mostly ger worse than better. I mean I am doing a lot of progress in lots of areas but it seems like there is always more things coming up and piling up on each other. That often leaves me quite hopeless and I can't believe that I will ever really be healed.
Last year I got introduced to ACT - Acceptance and Committment Therapy - and I learned to look at my illnesses differently. Maybe it can go away one day - but for now I am working on accepting my illnesses and learning how to live and possibly enjoy my life even with it.
Great words, great concept and a great deal of work in progress.

17:00 Lol, absolutely. The phenomenons you are discribing are _replacing vs. gliding_ (non-native speaker, I guess there exist more fancy words for this). When a boat cruises, it has to push the water in front to the side, hence replace it. There is a theoretical limit how fast you can go with this (mostly depending on the length of the hull). It's pretty comparable to the sonic barrier. When you hit that limit you can't go faster. BUT if the boat has a *very* good power/weight ratio (and a suitable formed hull), the excess power lifts the boat out of the water and makes it glide like a flipping rock. The work of the motor goes not into replacing water, but into lifting the boat. That's why you won't see cruise ships doing this. :)

    1) I absolutely adore this more casual style, but it would be cool if you could title or reference in the thumbnail the topics you hit in the podcast because I sometimes refer back to your old videos for specific content!
    2) Kati, I'm curious about why you chose to specialize in eating disorders. Did you intend to pursue that specialty before working in an ed treatment center, or did you just happen into it?
    3) Does treating ed patients (or anyone for that matter) ever trigger or wear on you mentally? How do you keep yourself separated from the job?

I am a chemist and as a scientist, or human, in general, I feel like it is my purpose is to seek to understand things. Frequently between sessions with my therapist, out of curiosity, I will read psychology related articles. Most of the time, they are related to what I’m going through, sometimes they aren’t. I try to stick to sites like psychology today in hopes that I’m getting real science based articles and not pseudoscience garbage, because psychology is not the science I study, I have no idea. My question is, as a therapist does it or would it bother you to have a client bring these articles up in session? Also is psychology today a good source for this or are there better sources?

    • @fragezeichenwenn
      @fragezeichenwenn 4 роки тому

Obviously, that would be a great question for your therapist! Maybe she can recommend some literature tailored to your issues, so you don't have to sort out scientific papers yourself.
I would prefer books with personal experience over scientific articles, however. Science is great at making theories and validating them, but scientific understanding could bring you away from your issues. Science is more of a brain thing, and most science papers try to find out whether treatment x works or not on humans in general. Human experience, however, is very subjective - and there is no single perfect measure. You need to figure out what helps you, and not rely on science to tell you what works. I would recommend an experience-based approach: I'd you read something science-related like " childhood trauma victims struggle to express emotions and feeling safe in relationships", maybe you feel a sudden urge to cry or are overwhelmed or just feel your chest tightening, and you are like "Wow, this triggers something in me". Then, you can tell your therapist about this and (s)he will ask you things "Do you feel like this is true for you? Why? Lets go through a typical meeting with friends. You told me last you were really crushed when that date didn't work out. How would you tell your friends about it?"
Most of the time, you don't need a scientific understanding of psychology to get well. It is more important to get an understanding about yourself, what triggers you, what kicks you into a downward spiral of thoughts. The scientific thinking can help to a certain degree, e. g. observing and identifying negative recurring thoughts and finding the root of it.

Hi Kati! I’m a childhood sexual abuse survivor and have done a lot of trauma work over the years, but I still have work to do. I am also a retired nurse, having retired 2 years ago. I worked in the hospital setting my entire career. I’m so concerned over my fellow nurses who have been in the trenches throughout Covid 19, and still continue to battle it every day. What’s going to happen when this is over, or at least under control? There’s going to be a massive number of nurses and healthcare workers who are going to be suffering PTSD, in fact there already is. It’s not being talked about at all, and I feel like there ought to be a plan in place for when that happens. Suicidality is a huge concern, and I know of 3 former colleagues who have died by suicide in the last few months. I don’t see that getting better unless we become proactive and have a plan in place. I don’t know where the responsibility lies, whether federal government or local government, but I have a feeling no matter which, it’s going to be a battle, just like it is for veterans. It saddens me and worries me. Can you speak to this? Someone needs to address it.

Kati’s visual imagery (about physical pain) literally described me all of last week and still continuing this week. Still have no idea what’s caused it and doctors are all telling me different things. I don’t think and I really hope it’s not a chronic illness, but it just feels exactly like how you described.
I like both ideas. I like these videos with different questions and different topics, but I also like the sound of videos tailored to one topic. Maybe do a variety of both? Get the best of both worlds?

Imo, in these podcasts you speak "as is" and when you make a video you may prepare text because it's an information that is straight to the point. And this is the line of formats to me. I would prefer if it would be kept that way, because it's cool. If you will make podcasts on specific topics I generally worry to keep it as is, natural, right now speaks. But the other concern is that there are lots of viewers who can wait in the line for other topics, so... It's comments related and expiremental wise. It's important to not stay in one state for too long. Currently, I like new show format, I can just sit and listen interesting things. Thanks for another episode of podcast.

Question 3, I really like this one....SO LOVE the BOAT analogy...I had my own boat in my 20's+30"s...so I GET IT!! so cool...I'm EXCITED ABOUT YOUR BOOK , WOW, you go girl......#7...YES. Nightime IS the worst. Even if you are not struggling with an eating disorder. AHHHH, thought stopping...Thank you for that one..memories...detailed. SO good. #9. Hitting close to home..ouch. Do I think you should group your questions??? Uhhhmmm, Just my own preference, no. I like that it is multi-faceted....If it were on one particular subject, and it didn't pertain, or interest me, I might not want to listen to that particular podcast. Example..ED's...Thankfuly I don't suffer with one of these, and Im not particularly interested in content that is ED related....make sense?

How long do you think someone should stick with 1 medication before trying a different one? Antidepressants specifically. I been on a couple different ones on and off over the years and I have been taking the same one for just over 7 months now. And I do not feel like it makes a difference. I think about a month in to taking it I started to feel a teeny tiny bit better for about 2 weeks and then nothing. My plan was to give it at least 3 months and then mention it to my doctor. But I just keep taking it because I am scared to stop cold turkey. I have made a doctor appointment 2 times now to go in and talk about it. But I do this thing where I sleep through my alarms or I will forget my appointment or if I’m late at all then I’ll just say screw it and not go at all. I get anxiety over it and very worked up about just going in and talking to my doctor about changing medication. But I can’t even seem to be able to make it out of my house and in to the doctors office. I have been having an extremely hard time doing ANYTHING. Getting up and out of bed, Putting proper clothes on, cooking food, and sometimes it even takes me a couple days to find the energy to take a shower. And this has been going on since January, before the whole Corona pandemic so it is unrelated to that. Please if you have any ideas that can help that would be lovely.

Hey kati! I love this podcast so much. I'm 19 and in my first year of college. I definitely know I want to get into the mental health field, but with so many degree options within the field I can't seem to pick a path. Could you offer any advice?

Hi Kati - I was just watching again and I wanted to offer you an idea for your new book/research... I honestly think this mass panic buying and food hoarding/fear of scarcity happening just now and possibly ongoing will have a huge impact on this and younger generations... whether it triggers BED or other EDs or just behaviours like your grandma I think it’s going to be something people research in the future too looking back.... you should get your name in early 😉☺️

Kati, are there resources (books, websites) that can help a person recover after a manic episode? Also, where can one one send fan art to you?

I have used a book called "The Bipolar Workbook" plain sounding I know, but I use it with my patients to help them understand and manage their bipolar symptoms. Also, many of my past patients have said "An Unquiet Mind" was helpful too :) If you want to mail it you can send it to my po box (1223 Wilshire Blvd. #665 Santa Monica, CA 90403) or you can just tag me in it online :) xoxo

Hey Kati. I am big fan of yours since 2018. Unfortunately I cannot be a sponsor, due to financial difficulties. However, I really want to join and ask a question. May someone tell me how? I am going to put my question here: how to get motivation to continue living, when you think things will never get better.

Hi katie. Awesome podcast. I’m so happy you’re doing them now. I was thinking about your way of describing transmission of trauma and I wonder if you could use the terms horizontal transmission or vertical transmission kind of like when They talk about how viruses spread? Not sure though. I just study coral reefs and am not a psychologist. Haha.

Hi Kati, in your next podcast episode of Ask Kati Anything, I have a question that I would love to be answered. I recently relapsed with self injury and switched the method that I used. I used to cut and then I was clean for about a year and then a week or so ago I relapsed and burned myself. why did I change the method that I used? and can you please talk more about self injury in this podcast?

Hey! So I was wondering if you could weigh in on the Trisha Paytas controversy. If you haven’t already heard she has self diagnosed herself with DID and everyone is saying she is pretending for attention she’s posted now two videos with “proof” that she does have these other (personalities). In the video she shows her “switches” and in my opinion it definitely looks fake but I’d like your opinion. My question is what’s your thoughts? Do you also believe she is faking it?

Kati can transference work in reverse allowing you to forgive someone who hurt you in the past(you force yourself to have a new friendship with someone that looks similar to someone you hate and change negative associations)?

have you ever made a mistake or gotten lost/off track or confused in life? have you ever had the existential crisis (contemplated the reality of death and the purpose of life)? Are you christian? In college were you unable to have a social life cause of the amount of study? (Cause I know you went to school for a very long time and I'm curious what the shitty jobs and lack of social life must have been like in your twenties and how you managed to pull that off). What attracted you to Shawn?

I have moved a lot and am on my 4th therapist in 2 years, I usually only go once a month, so I feel like I just am getting to the point when I start to feel better and make progress, then I am forced to switch again, does this make it harder for me to get better?

First, thank you so much for this and especially speaking about chronic illness. I so appreciate it. I think your topics should be separated, if possible. Seeing as we are in such a turbulent time, I'm wondering if you can do a video about staying sane while in isolation? I know you already did a corona virus video, but I would sure like tips to needing to stay inside. I'm immunocompromised and I'm indefinitely told to stay put. What can I do? Thanks
