That's some real high tech, especially because SNCF had to perform this (successful) record attempt in the south where the catenary voltage is just 1.500 V (okay, for the record attempt they kept it close to the upper limit of 1.800 V). To reach a speed of >300 km/h with a low-weight train you need something like 6-7 MW of engine power - that's approx. 3.5 - 4 kA to be fed to the locomotive via catenary and pantograph. You see the severe arcing resulting from that insane current. Just for comparison: Trying the same with a Taurus on German rails results in moderate .4 kA of current which is within the limits of everyday operation.

I know :D The TGV went 574 km/h but the record of 357 km/h (not MPH) stand for the fastest locomotive! Not train! It's a German Taurus (some people call it Eurosprinter). It achieved a speed of 357 km/h
more than 50 years earlier than the German Taurus an entire train achieved almost the same speed. It wasn't just a loco, it was a train. No wonder SNCF and France are the leading drivers behind high speed trains

The new taurus record is 357 km/h and this is in 1955 and the loco goes 331 km/h only 26 km/h slower than the new record.
