I agree. Badge snobbery is the only reason to choose a GTI over one of these. The Hyundai is faster, handles better, sounds better, is more fun to drive, is no less well engineered (Biermann's influence runs deep), better equipped, just as easy to live with daily, will be more reliable (compare Hyundai and VW positions in any reliability survey), has a longer warranty (which also covers track use), is cheaper, and holds its value just as well. All I will say after living with the i30N for a bit is the Golf will probably be better on fuel.

polychronio lol 😁 Challenge Toyota funny . Having owned a Hyundai and three of my friends having owned different Hyundai model's all had major mechanical and electrical problems . My own i20 's engine give in at only 35000 miles with full dealer service history . Within 2 years it had rust on the tailgate and doors alloys peeled gearbox leaked oil etc etc , the list is endless it was done in by 4 year's I had to get rid as Hyundai's 5 year warranty isn't worth the paper it's written on they try to get out of every repair and the attitude is , well you bought it . My friend's diesel ix35s engine managed 50000 miles before it threw a piston on the motorway . I could go on forever . I now own a Toyota auris and have had no issues whatsoever using it to earn my living in all day 6 days a week . Every person I know who had owned a Hyundai has been plagued with problem's . A world away from Toyota in every way possible
It was only a few years ago I had the i20 . They are ok for Joe public who potters to work a few miles a day but real use show's they are not made for the long haul . That's why you don't see Hyundai taxis but loads of Toyota . They go on forever
your experience is not reference or anything...hyundai is now more reliable than toyota....you can see hyundai taxi in korea and never seen toyota taxi.....😁
polychronio All reliability reports have Japanese cars at the top and let's face it Koreans will support there own . Old Hyundai's were way more reliable my wife has owned a Hyundai getz for 11 year's .cheap but bullet proof the reason I bought one myself . But now they have gone mainstream seems they have tried to run before they can walk. I only say this cos I would hate anyone to spend 4 years the way I did when the relly on there car so much . It went back 38 times in 4 years and developed multiple faults in the 2 weeks I waited for my Toyota to be delivered
they did completely right with it. not too crazy optic like the civic type r, nice and decent like a GTI, but with a bit more grunt and not that toned down so you can hear sth from the exhaust and the turbo. awesome!
I'm watching this video, and it's amazing how back in this time, it was so weird for a Hyundai to be good. Now, the i30N is a bit of a cult car, and N is a respected badge.
Bradley Uppercrust III how is this a a35 amg wannabe when it came out a year ago?? Also its sounds better than a gti is faster and cheaper smh... 🤦🏻♂️
Bradley Uppercrust III name me one said that looks like a a45? It looks more like a audi you dummy look at the grill🤦🏻♂️ and look at the exhaust pipes it has real pipes not like the a45 wit 4 fake pipes 😂🤮🤮🤮
This is it. This is the video that started it all for me. Matt, you made me fall in love with a Hyundai...and I couldn't be happier about it. I've been the proud owner of a VN PP in PB for 8 months now and the experience has been superb to say the least. Thank God for Albert Biermann joining the Korean domestic market. I love my car, thank you for bringing it to my attention first Mr Watson!
While the design isn't bad, it borrowed way too much from the Ford Focus in the front side of the car; the last gen i30 paints a similar story. I utterly dislike lack of design originality that Hyundai has displayed in the i30.
sry, I meant the respective cars of these brands... I didn't want to compare the i30 N vs the Volkswagen Group, cause the latter is a bit more expensive
This Is The King Of The Hatch :) El Chapo Jr 😎 Price - Power - Practicality :D Nothing can really compete with it. Polo GTI/Golf GTI yeah, but they don't look & sound as good as this i30N
Actually, if I was in a market for a Golf GTI i would very much look at this car since i feel it brings much more to the table for the same amount of money. It may not have the plush materials and the badge but has everything else. Other than that, this segment is getting really interesting, theres never been so many hot hatches on the market with even more to come :)
I don't understand. Since when is a VW badge something we crave for? In my opinion it is the least premium badge one can have! Boring, cheap and unreliable cars, the only reason they sell well is because VW has somehow become trendy these days, and it is obviously known that people would rather be stupid than non-trendy. Smh...
alondreymarcelo can't complain wit that. All I'm trying to say is that Hyundai has come a long way, Compared to how they were before. Now they can compete wit some of the best 😎
Watched 3 'reviews' on the i30N before coming across your video - very well done! All the others were poorly scripted, poorly cut and the content was lacking. I loved that you jumped right into the action, and shotgunned the tabulated data out. Thanks for the review, and comedies in between!
Nice touch having Switchable Rev-Matching whilst on the move, on the FK8 CTR you have be stationary i believe. It's come out of nowhere the Hyundai and its fantastic. Well done 👍🏻
Noble Vigilance upset this Hyundai smokes your boxy GTI? I see you shitting on this car all over the comments. Bet you have never driven it. And never will. How can you judge it then?
It's no surprise. Great car. Mr. Albert Biermann move to Hyundai was a surprise. Mr. Biermann knows how to build excellent sport cars. Respect and congratulations to Hyundai.
This dude must be the best car reviewer right now... while most car shows have become comedies shows, this dude is just on point without being too boring. Top Gear, why have you not taken him on in replacement to the clowns that just left???
Never in a thousand years would I have thought I'd want a Hyundai as much as I do now. Wow. Well done to Hyundai, can't wait to give this thing a test drive.
I thought exactly the same till drove this to B roads. If the Lexus dealer didn't have the showroom model IS300 on sale (13k off), I would have gotten this. I wouldn't consider any other Hyundai car, but this one is something else.
I would buy this in a heartbeat. I have had 1.2 years in my 2017 lancer 5 speed, true JDM. Had to wait for that one. But this car is spectacular. Hyundai is very clever with this car. I'm in the USA
I still have my untechnological 2006 Hyundai elantra and I love how reliable it has been now I see this and think damn Hyundai has really grown up that's a really nice hot hatch
bongmistt fuck your "rich history". You think boasting about how "rich the history" of your car is to someone is going to be, even in the slightest, interested in what you're saying to them? For fucks sake 😂😂 how utterly pretentious and dismissive can you get about a serious effort in giving people more choice in performance cars. Go buy your expensive German car with its "rich history", chances are, nobody will - let alone your mum won't give a fuck.
My only concern with this car is sadly it's residuals, will it drop its value faster than it's more established, mainstream alternatives. But on the flip side the warranty seems really good on them being 5 year unlimited mileage, which is highly unusual compared to its competition. I haven't heard many negatives for this except for it being abit underpowered compared to its rivals. I might have a look at these next year when my M235i is 4 years old as I am struggling to work out what to go to next.
Tom90Y - good luck with the warranty. Hyundai is well known for giving you the run around when it comes to warranty claims. I didn't believe it at first but as a Hyundai owner I later found out
Other Hyundai owner here, Andrei's experience is unfortunate but I don't have the same experience at all. I complained about a minor rattle that you could hear intermittently going over rough surfaces. They couldn't hear anything but took my word for it and tore the interior down looking for it. They found a cable in the headliner that was not clipped in. Way better than my experiences on my earlier cars (German), where the manufacturer garage assume you are lying when you bring up a fault, or say that it's "supposed to do that".
Yeah, really depends on the dealership. There appears to be too much variation as to how much run around you may or may not get. I'd totally trade in for the i30 N in a heartbeat. *Hyundai owner in the US*.
Yes. Accent N with the 1.6 turbo from the Elantra sport. Independent rear suspension, tuned exhaust, slick 6 speed manual, 18 inch wheels and under 20k. We need a replacement for the Fiesta ST!
There are already plans for the I20N, just look on the German jp performance channel... He did a video with hyundai and there you can clearly see how he drives a tuned i20 with a 1.6L engine with round about 200 hp. 👍
Hi Mat, I'm a big fan for years now, that means i watched you on other channels before too :-) ...BUT i have a minor complaint, you've already done a clip of how to pronounce foreign car makers right. Pleeeeeease don't say Hyundai like this, it really hurts. Keep on doing your good and delightful, humorous work. Your funny way of presenting often makes my day. Cheers from Vienna, Austria
Is it just me or does this car looks better than the American version aka the 2018 Elantra GT Sport? Are they supposed to be the same car? Really wish I could get this exact car in the U.S.
Bill...Except for the same basic shape, these cars don't much in common mechanically. The chasis has been heavily modified, different transmission, suspension, engine, exhaust, brakes, tires...everything. Don't feel bad. We can't get it in Korea either, and the thing is made here!
What a fantastic review! Seems to be a great package. Can't wait to get the Veloster N in the states. The second I'm out of college with my engineering degree I'll be test driving and hopefully buying one!
Gallopingclap I wouldn't worry too much if it's still under warranty, if not then it'd be unwise to keep it as these electronic extravaganzas can cost a leg if and when they go wrong.
I've test drove this car. It is a good looking car in the right colour. There is good head room and space for the driver and passenger but not good leg room in the back. Prepare to feel every bump and crack in the road suspension poor. In the wet there is a lot of wheel spin and the tyres struggle to keep up with the revs stalling at 5 while the tyres try to keep up. The car sounds great starting it up, going up and down gears all sounds great and the power is impressive but better wait till it's dry.
I fucking loveeee what Hyundai have done in the past several years. They really have reinvented themselves, and they are still doing it with this car. The head of BMW's M division went to Hyundai to create this, that's just nuts.
hans batter is not the lightest. But also not the heaviest. Astra opc and Focus ST are probably heavier. The new Megane RS is said to weight over 1400kg too.
The official 0 to 62 mph is 6.1 so that equates to 5.9 0 to 60mph (🇬🇧) but with pro drivers it generally accepted at 5.7 which is pretty similar to a MK2 Focus RS so l think it’s safe to say it’s nippy! Considering what you get standard (ok performance pack) plus 5 year warranty l personally think it’s worth a punt. Get one a couple of years old (lost a bit £££) and still 3 year warranty left 🤔🤔. It’s great we have so much choice in the UK 👍👍
It think i saw that it will be offered as dual clutch in late 2018 or begging of 2019, but who cares its still faster both than GTI and R around the nurburgring.
Handsome little thing as well! I dunno what has happened but Korean car brands have made really cool looking cars lately instead of the dreary boxes they used to do.
Sounds like a great car (literally!) I prefer the looks to the Golf personally, as it's fresh, rather than same old. More reliable too, no doubt. The suspension was developed by an ex BMW M guy, so he should know a thing or two about making a car handle well. The price is appealing. Seems it has all you need more or less straight out of the box, so you are not going to be clobbered with the cost of options either. All it lacks is 'the' badge, if that bothers you and maybe a few soft touch plastics, but it seems as a car to drive it's right up there. If the dealers are half decent, this has potential to be a really interesting car. Well done Hyundai!
i think it's pretty wow, i'd take this over a golf any day of the week....i have a 2014 elantra GT fully loaded and I love it..this looks like the ultimate version of the GT. This styling is awesome!
Adidasp4 probably not. It will probably be claimed if it isn't already but its not present long enough to trigger automatic strike unless someone manually strikes it
I just realised that Carwow exists in Germany! Awesome! I have just asked for offers on the Hyuandi i30 N Performance to replace my BMW M140i. If the offers look good I will arrange a test drive! :)
Those are t vents to cool the brakes, although it may help in cooling the brakes. Those vents are for aerodynamics and create less drag around the front wheels.
I love this car. It's fast, it's manual, it has auto rev matching, it's turbo, it pops and bangs, it has 5 years of warranty, it's cheap.

your experience is not reference or anything...hyundai is now more reliable than toyota....you can see hyundai taxi in korea and never seen toyota taxi.....😁
polychronio All reliability reports have Japanese cars at the top and let's face it Koreans will support there own .
Funny thing is it'll probably outlast a crappy golf and be more reliable and cheaper to run.Ill take it.
muckspreader1able you're so right..Golf is a miserable looking car..that bottom lip front bumper ffs
@@ianharrison2490 Gulf's look fine in my opinion but not so sporty.
@ damn don't call the hyundai that, the A35 is shit
I love my car, thank you for bringing it to my attention first Mr Watson!
wtf is a vn pp in pn
Im really excited by this car, cant wait to see it in the metal
doesn't beat it's competitiors, but I still kinda like the design... They did a really good job over at Hyundai
While the design isn't bad, it borrowed way too much from the Ford Focus in the front side of the car; the last gen i30 paints a similar story. I utterly dislike lack of design originality that Hyundai has displayed in the i30.
obviously Audi, VW, BMW and Merc, which is quite ok considering the lower price
Those aren't competitors, they are brands - and it sums it all up, really.
sry, I meant the respective cars of these brands... I didn't want to compare the i30 N vs the Volkswagen Group, cause the latter is a bit more expensive
Have you driven one?
I love hot hatches
Keyvan Taghipour me 2 bro
Best car type
Exactly, fun and practical without being pretentious (usually).
Who doesn't?
I love lamp
I Just bought this car today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SO HAPPY WITH IT!
This Is The King Of The Hatch :) El Chapo Jr 😎
Price - Power - Practicality :D
Nothing can really compete with it.
Smh...
@@mehimre9249 I have owned multiple volkswagens in the last few years and never had a single problem with reliability
Love cars that are not too fancy at the same time perform well. Also looks very nice inside and out.
If you see Matt laughing and his happy face you know this brand did a very good job!!!❤HYUNDAI
Hyundai vehicles now are so reliable and enjoyable 😎 . I have the 2017 Elantra and I luv it 🤗
nkosi collier you’ve had it for a year and it’s reliable 😂😂 I’ll reply to this next year
Hassan Khan I said reliable cause of the places I've driven, it stood up very strong. I'm speaking from experience brother. Ease meh up nah 😯
when they give you unlimited mileage and 5 yr warranty... that is a sign of reliability. give me a manufacturer that offers the same..
alondreymarcelo can't complain wit that. All I'm trying to say is that Hyundai has come a long way, Compared to how they were before. Now they can compete wit some of the best 😎
alondreymarcelo Toyota does.
Watched 3 'reviews' on the i30N before coming across your video - very well done! All the others were poorly scripted, poorly cut and the content was lacking. I loved that you jumped right into the action, and shotgunned the tabulated data out. Thanks for the review, and comedies in between!
ugh i want it in the states so badly
Parth Awasthi In the US they are coming out with the Veloster N.
Hyundai i30 N and KIA Stinger is actually pretty crazy. Kudos for great evolving.
Mr Adui TT has done a great job on this one
Tore Hansen Audi tt the best
Absolutely spot on. Ever since he joined the company Hyundai has reached heights it never did before.
vedicbaru With you on that one mate 🤣
Well said
Mr Audi tt and Mr M motorsport
Nice touch having Switchable Rev-Matching whilst on the move, on the FK8 CTR you have be stationary i believe. It's come out of nowhere the Hyundai and its fantastic. Well done 👍🏻
4:04 'now, we can all agree that added stiffness is a good thing'
this is the 3th time im watching this review, from a golf fanboy and I am just in love with this car
What matt said was wrong. I have a Golf GTI and would without doubt seriously consider the i30 N as a next car.
Almost half a million subs. You deserve millions of subs! Keep going CW!
buy it or shortlist it or consider it?
Wayne Song shitlist it
Got to wait until they get a right hand drive version on a UK test track.
Noble Vigilance upset this Hyundai smokes your boxy GTI? I see you shitting on this car all over the comments. Bet you have never driven it. And never will. How can you judge it then?
At the end of the video he said consider it ..
Shortlist it, definitely. One of the best hot hatches on the market right now.
Never see matt this happy
Really love this car!
When he changed the suspension mode, there was a complete visual difference 😭
You make some very good car reviews!
Koreans are stepping up their game when it comes to more performance cars. First the new Kia car and now this.
I would buy this in a heartbeat. I have had 1.2 years in my 2017 lancer 5 speed, true JDM. Had to wait for that one. But this car is spectacular. Hyundai is very clever with this car. I'm in the USA
HOLY SHIT I`VE BEEN WAITING SO LONG FOR A REVIEW OF THIS CAR, LOVE YOU! Instant Sub right there
I still have my untechnological 2006 Hyundai elantra and I love how reliable it has been now I see this and think damn Hyundai has really grown up that's a really nice hot hatch
i like this car way better then the pricy german cars
A typical comment from someone who can't afford cars with a rich history. Asian cars are rubbish.
bongmistt good joke
matter of fact i have a 2015 bmw 6 series matte black but i'd rather sell it to have some fun in this new hyundai
bongmistt how can you say that for Hyundai which offers 5(+2) Year Unlimited Mileage warranty, tell me what other brand has a warranty like that?
bongmistt fuck your "rich history".
I love your reviews, Mat! Cheers from Mexico
Please review Kia Stinger GT :)
Please review any Kia GT... :(
Wow....watching him smile everytime he drives tells you this car is fun.
I didn't believe it at first but as a Hyundai owner I later found out
wow had no idea there warranties were so bad, I just presumed it was as good as most warranties.
cheers for the heads up.
I might get hyundai i30N for my second car .
The only thing that I hate about this car is... the fact it won't be sold in North America...I defenitely would have bought one
I have a i20 and I love it, but going to upgrade to the n now. Hyundai really have grown and will never switch to any other brand.
i20N please, for real this time
Yes. Accent N with the 1.6 turbo from the Elantra sport. Independent rear suspension, tuned exhaust, slick 6 speed manual, 18 inch wheels and under 20k. We need a replacement for the Fiesta ST!
Wait really?
*quivers with excitement*
There are already plans for the I20N, just look on the German jp performance channel... He did a video with hyundai and there you can clearly see how he drives a tuned i20 with a 1.6L engine with round about 200 hp. 👍
I live in South Africa. Saw one in a Hyundai showroom today. Awesome car indeed. I’m ready to trade my Jetta in.
Hyundai i30N better and cheaper hothatch than VW Golf GTI, true true
Hi Mat, I'm a big fan for years now, that means i watched you on other channels before too :-)
...BUT i have a minor complaint, you've already done a clip of how to pronounce foreign car makers right.
Very good hot hatch!
You can actually see how much difference there was between the N and Normal suspension on that rough road!
You just wonder with all that performance tech whether (uk) Hyundai dealers will be up to the task of repairs and maintenance 🤔
Gallopingclap I wouldn't worry too much if it's still under warranty, if not then it'd be unwise to keep it as these electronic extravaganzas can cost a leg if and when they go wrong.
Did not expect that sound to come out of a Hyundai - but damn it sounds good. I think I know what I’m saving up for!
Great review I really like the car and as I'm over 30 I wouldn't be seen dead in chavvy type R so this looks a real possibility 🤔
I bought one and can highly recommend it. Took it to the track as wel and it was absolutely amazing!
Hyundai have basically made a new Mazda 3 MPS whilst Mazda themselves can't be bothered to make a new one
wish the new mazda 3 came in a MPS version.
but this has bigger brakes and a limited slip diff
Yeah mazda is gonna loose big time. Same with mitsubishi well theyve already lost the plot
MazdaSpeed 3 is a different beast, very unruly and unrefined. I'd rather have this Hyundai.
Really entertaining reviewer good job!Brian
Hyundai needs to bring this to the U.S.
Well there's a problem, there's no automatic and none of your contrymen know how to drive stick.
Canada too!
Heard we only get Veloster N
HB45175 I'm daily driving a 2017 Elantra Sport 6MT as we speak. You were saying?
yiyangcheng Correct, 2019 Veloster N will be sold in the US. My guess is same drivetrain/suspension as the i30 N.
Best overall daily hot hatch on the market imo.... Hyundai did a great job with this one!

I fucking loveeee what Hyundai have done in the past several years. They really have reinvented themselves, and they are still doing it with this car. The head of BMW's M division went to Hyundai to create this, that's just nuts.
Was it forbidden to discuss the extra weight?!
hans batter is not the lightest.
I'm looking at picking one up now. 15-16k for a whole lot of car!!
Will the automatic transmission be as fast as the VW DSG?
Adidasp4 probably not. Unless it has steptronic or tiptronic
It wont't. There will be no auto.
Love vw dsg, got it in my ibiza it flies lol
No automatic offered.
It think i saw that it will be offered as dual clutch in late 2018 or begging of 2019, but who cares its still faster both than GTI and R around the nurburgring.
Handsome little thing as well! I dunno what has happened but Korean car brands have made really cool looking cars lately instead of the dreary boxes they used to do.
i’d love to see clarkson have a go in this
He drove it, and posted a review on Sunday Times. Google it. It seems that he quite liked it.
They have nailed it this time...can't wait for a test drive!!!
do the 2017 kia picanto
Damn someone needs to show you how to launch a car
i think it's pretty wow, i'd take this over a golf any day of the week....i have a 2014 elantra GT fully loaded and I love it..this looks like the ultimate version of the GT. This styling is awesome!
GTI interior is on on another level... Just cant compare
Stefan Ciganovic what's the point of having the best interior if the car is always in the shop VW is nowhere near as reliable as Hyundai 🤔🤔🤔
Now is everything in reliable ? I have reliable Audi....

Adidasp4 probably not. It will probably be claimed if it isn't already but its not present long enough to trigger automatic strike unless someone manually strikes it
Adidasp4 I hope they do because this car is an absolute rip off
Adidasp4 I think they're allowed to use 6 seconds of any video or music. I may be wrong though?
Not unless they bought the original album
They can buy the song explaining it's short use
I just realised that Carwow exists in Germany! Awesome! I have just asked for offers on the Hyuandi i30 N Performance to replace my BMW M140i. If the offers look good I will arrange a test drive! :)
