The most fun I've had this year: a 2017 Hyundai i30N! 'Retro' review

  • The Hyundai i30N is coming up on 7 years old, and I was lucky enough to drive the first-ever UK version. This is Hyundai's original attempt at a hot hatch, and I wanted to see how fresh it feels in 2023 (or 4, or whatever year you're watching this). Is it a solid used buy now they're £18,000 on the second-hand market? Join me for a mildly retro review of a modern-ish icon.
    Find out by watching... thanks.

The world needs more hot hatches, even warm hatches, who doesn't love a chuckable affordable practicle car

Good tip about the fuel filler door shape, I didn't realise that was a thing. Still strange to think the i30N is nearly 7 years old!

a buddy just got a new one 2 weeks ago... a very very impressive car. A friend with a 330i drove and said that if it wasn't for the luggage room necessarry for the baby, he would get one in a heart beat. A much better driver's car than his F-series 330i; a much much better driver's car than my staged 1 Seat Leon. If I would have the money.. it would be very hard to decide between one of these or a lighty used GRY or a new BRZ(as we can get them in Europe, at least in my country, where we cannot get the gr86); all different cars but all very special and engaging for their price.

The i30N checks all the boxes! I had one for some time. I only wish it came in British racing green.

As the owner of a Kia Proceed GT, this looks like a really good future upgrade path to me; it should be familiar but with more grunt and a bit more of a raw edge to it! Great review as always Tim, and probably a refreshing change from the sea of family SUVs!

I had the 5 door ceed gt before I bought mine, definitely the right upgrade, i30n feels very similar to the gt ceed, just a more extreme version.

I really wish we would have gotten this car in the US. I own a Kona N and am throwing around the idea of picking up a used Veloster N for a manual gearbox. Had these been available I’d already own 3.

Great Video Tim! I have a 2013 Veloster Turbo and this seems like the perfect next step, that's a lot of car for £18k!

Im glad you like it. The world is going to be a sorrier place when these fun hatches disappear.

I really enjoyed mine. It was a hoot and had a real sense of fun.
18months and almost free motoring too 🤓
The steering and damping in standard modes were a standout for me 😃
In the end I struggled with the seating position, which was a shame.

When I needed a car a couple of years ago I was looking for one of these but there was a serious shortage of used cars at the time. So I saw a used i20 and snapped that up instead. Great cars.

It was fun while it lasted.

Can't hate on a hot hatch.
Where I live in Au I've never seen one in the sea of beige breeder boxes.

Good stuff thanks. Make the best of that old engineering because ev's are here! The Ioniq 5N is £65k by the way. My current Kona N was £35k new two years ago. I really don't know how people afford to buy cars these days or are all "purchases" on HP/PCP? Discuss.

Sorry I don't know any Korean words...but you were sure being jiggled around a hell of a lot in your seat in that vid. Clearly a great hot hatch in terms of value this, but they were thirsty and hard riding/noisy as a daily when compared to the Focus ST or Golf GTI

Fantastic car, but I found it to be too stiff even in comfort mode, just enough to have awkward moments of silence with your passengers on bad roads..

Haha yeah it's never exactly super comfy… but better than a Megane RS of the era in retrospect (contrary to what I said in the vid)

Nice jacket by the way. As for this car, yes sounds good looks good. As you say about electric cars, I dont like any of them and going forwards when I decide to trade in my Sandero, I will either get a small quick fun hatchback or a relaxing hybrid with CVT. This plugging in to charge up with these useless lithium ion batteries is a joke. More fool them the people buying into it. The next generation of batteries will make current EVs worthless if they cant be upgraded. Imagine in a few years, you smugly go into a dealer to trade in your PCP lease EV and they say “well those batteries are old fashioned, nobody wants to spend hours charging them up and only getting a couple of hundred miles range anymore now we have solid state batteries, so we cant give you much for it im afraid”. Believe me, this scenario is coming. You will do nothing but lose money with today’s generation of EVs, and even more so when they are obsolete.
