- Turbo 3 Rotor RX7 with a DCT?! Normally we're all about 90's legends retaining manual transmissions, but this setup is glorious! Tajh originally built his RX7 with a t56 manual trans but then decided to take the leap into swapping a dual clutch transmission from a BMW and never turned back. The car is an absolute blast and delivers such a different sensation than we're used to feeling from an old school rotary. I absolutely love Tajh’s car! I went with the hardcore t56 but it’s hard to ignore how smooth the DCT maintains power to the road. Love seeing the innovation.

You did the right thing. The DCT is hottt, but its moving the FD away from its roots. A sequential would be the ultimate trans but a T56 is the way I would go.

@@Vgk36 “most guys” with a car of this caliber don’t build it and do 90% of the work themselves. They just have the deep pockets and pay a shop to do it and then pick up the car on delivery day
@@markypshoots you have to have deep pockets either way lol. The tools and garage aren't free if you want to do it your self not to mention the actual car and parts and time needed to build it.
@@jayknight139 great point! It was already made tho... built vs bought. Shop gets it done in a year l.. you may take 3 to get it right... but the joy that brings makes you not want to sell it.
Those rotaries never fail to amaze me.... They sound like they're just seconds from exploding. Beautiful car and it moves out.
They usually are close to blowing up or was just finished rebuilding it.

legit the craziest RX7 ive seen in awhile even more then the 4 rotors i have seen. inspiration to the max right here.
Rotary is probably the most fun engine to drive. Imo

The dct work you guys have done is awesome 👍 one question, in the vid it looks like there's a bit of lag between the paddle pull and the actual gear shift. Is that something you are able to improve in the dct tune?
@@dawggpie there is delay on low load shifts but that's intentional, because if you're driving grandma style it means you're not in rush so why would box have to be in rush then 😅 but as soon as you step on it, that's instant :P
@@HTGtuning ah I see. Is that too improve smoothness of shifts? I was driving a Porsche pdk recently and even at low load the programming felt pretty instantaneous. Possibly slower than high load but still very low latency. Gave a great perception.
I've peppered you guys about this before, but any chance you'll figure out how to interface with the e60 s85 oem ecu (mss85 I believe) canbus? I don't think anyone has done it yet but I think literally every v10 e60 smg owner would switch over to dct in a second. 😁
@@dawggpie We already have communication with s85 ECU done.
And yes, it can be as quick on light load as on high load and still be smooth, but as Tajh mentioned - I did that tune in like half an hour via anydesk with laggy internet :P We will go further than that when time comes :D

Wow that DCT makes such a huge difference... it seems incredibly well matched and tuned to behave as well as it does.
Stark contrast to all the sequential boxes that you usually see in these super-tuner cars.
I saw the RX7 in the thumbnail photo and automaticaly i clicked in. Looking the first pulls though it was a 1jz swapped by the sound and seconds later realised that is a DCT+20b! Sick!
Thank god it's still rotary. I always felt, when owners take the plunge & invest into a rotary, these cars become very hard to beat, vs the typical 2j & lsx swaps

Man I love this rx7! I'm a manual guy all the way,but it's really hard to argue that a rotary mated to a dct isn't a beautiful thing....mad props what an exceptional example of a nice rx7

I’ll never forget the day I drove my brand new 1993 RX-7 R1 (RED) off the lot. Then I took it to a guy named Peter Farrell Supercars, and hooked it up. That was 28 years ago!

Hell of a build. I saw him post a while back when he was figuring out the trans issue. This thing is a beast.
Hert's smarter cousin. No LS swaps here boi. The only thing I kinda don't like is the delay between the shifts however, its obvious it stays on boost rather than falling off between shifts in a manual. I wonder how this thing would pull on a sequential. The body parts, paint, wheels, tintless, is perfect. Beautiful build. PS: The way Tajh speaks, reminds of Elon Musk for some reason lol Btw The Edits are FIRE!

I’ve been watching and waiting for the tuners and people with deep pockets to start bringing more DCT transmission adaptations to some builds. Not that manuals aren’t amazing. But when people are trying to go insanely quick they usually turn to sequential manuals, which is essentially the same formula a DCT is trying to do. It’s just an automated manual that uses two clutch sets instead of one single clutch. One set takes care of odd gears and one set takes care of even gears. So one clutch is always free and ready to go. They’re pretty brilliant pieces of engineering and should be loved!

Beautiful build bro, this is exactly what I was trying to do with my FD. UNFORTUNATELY, all the internals got stole for my 20b. So my car has been sitting since 2008. But I'm gonna get it fixed someday.
