      She was the same as many other male protagonists of the time, but developers determined at some point that she needed to be "relatable" and compassionate so they gave her a guilty conscience in future games. But really, nobody talks about how Agent 007 is killing without remorse. They just think he is cool and that's it. Lara is always held to an impossible standard.

    • @Goldman200
      @Goldman200 2 роки тому +15

      @@Mitsu2040 Well I'd say Agent 007 is not the best example because he is an enginereed assassin and lacks a lot of empathy, he only connected with a few people and that's it.
      I'd say characters like Nathan Drake, Sam Fisher and Leon S. Kennedy are more questionable. Nathan is basically a mass murderer lol Sam Fisher may have political reasons but still, it's like a justification, and Leon has been killing monsters for so long that he seems to have lost all empathy, in the canon movie Vendetta he is seen murdering civilians without remorse.

    • @masnidebelicrnac

      @@Goldman200 idk why you're getting Fisher into this, in the first few games he barely killed anyone and even in the later games there are non lethal options, also all the people he kills are people he is told to kill so he is a murderer just as much a regular soldier is, and he does have remorse.

    AoD had SO much potential and it saddens me that there won't be a remake anytime soon :(
    The Amulet she recieved when she was trapped in the tomb was supposed to be expanded upon, and it was supposed to explain why she was always saying "I feel stronger now.", because she was weakened from being in the tomb & the Amulet was restoring her strength as well as giving her special protective abilities , hence being able to defeat Brother Obscura, Eckhardt, the half angel nephilim.
    Brother Obscura was also supposed to be TOTALLY different than the crap we know him as.
    And Curtis had so much potential to be featured in future TR games as a partner, Lara in one part of the world and him in another, or maybe they'd be in the same place helping each other, and then maybe even have his own spin off game series eventually.
    Ugh, the wasted potential, it crushes me 😪

      Core at that time wasn't in a good place. And the higher-ups didn't help with their "ambitious" ideas to push Lara into the new engine, the PS2, they wanted to know what could the system do (that's why they tried including rpg elements with the strength or selling more items to Rennes) and the fact that they were split two to in Chronicles as well.

      Would've been interesting to maybe have at least a spin off co-op game (okay, we have the Lara Croft games but I'm talking traditional TR gameplay and dedicated camera for each character lol) focused on puzzles/platforming that requires two players to get through, synchronized timing and all, help with combat (maybe some boss where one player distracts it while the other attacks/solves a platforming puzzle).
      I'm sure a lot of people would use it to get friends or their partners into the franchise like resident evil 5 did

    07:05 I don't know if there are official sources on the date and chronological order, but i.m.o the TR4 Cambodia levels occured before the island levels in TR5. Why? For one, in Cambodia, Lara is still a rookie and Werner teaches her the controls etc, and during their visit here, Lara finds a backpack.
    In TR5's island levels, Lara is already experienced with controls etc, and she already has her signature backpack which she found in Cambodia.
    ADDED: Also, TR1-3 have expansions; in TR1 you have two additional levels after escaping tbe Atlantean Pyramid where you finish off the last mutant creatures, and afterwards she returns to the Temple of Khamoon to look for a Temple of Cats.
    In the TR2 expansion, she searches for an artifact known as the golden mask.
    In TR3 she learns of a fifth stone, which she obtains.

      @@Potkanka As far as I know, the source that places Ireland before Cambodia is the same source that places Lara's VCI heist of the Iris after TR3, and before TR4 - which we know is also incorrect since she has the Iris in her trophy room in TR3. The timeline from the AOD companion book places the VCI story after TR2 and before TR3 (which makes sense) and Ireland after Cambodia, so that is why I think that is the most correct version to follow.

    Notice how the longest section is Angel of Darkness... that game used to have a reputation for being the black sheep of the Tomb Raider franchise, but it actually had a pretty engaging story overall (I could've sworn it was taking some inspiration from the Da Vinci code but looking at the release dates I don't think that's plausible). The weakest element of course is Kurtis Trent, but otherwise it's a solid game.

    • @Thagomizer

      If only the gameplay hadn't been so terrible and unpolished. Oversaturation and burnout killed off the original Tomb Raider, and it became apparent that they were churning out Lara Croft for the sake of Lara Croft rather than Tomb Raider, but it would seem that the original Lara takes all of the blame for that.
      If the series had remained consistent with the first installment and better aspects of the second one, with more time and thought put into the games rather than releasing one after another year after year, the franchise would probably look much different today. All of this stuff trying to humanize Lara and focusing on combat (particularly human enemies) and the shift away from isolation and the majority of the game being spent actually exploring tombs has been for the worse.
      I want more than anything just about in the world of gaming for someone to make a modern Tomb Raider that embodies what made the first game from 1996 so awesome. The intrigue, the wonder, the atmosphere, the anticipation of building up to something so exciting and otherworldly. It became more about showing off Lara Croft than having a badass Lara Croft show off the spectacular world building of the first game.

      It's a nice story arc that goes from Lara's early years until her death. It's a challenging game, with loads of puzzles. The atmosphere of isolation is captured perfectly.
      It has its flaws, like poor telegraphing of where to open certain things, or where to look, sure. But to me it feels like the complete package.

    @GeonusKaikun 2 роки тому +13

    I think the two timelines can easily be seen as one and the same, with the Crystal Dynamics games picking up where Angel of Darkness left off. You would simply need to consider Lara's backstory revealed in the Crystal Dynamics games as a retcon to that revealed in the instruction manuals of the original games, rendering the latter non-canon. Since those backstories are not mentioned in the games themselves, there is nothing in the Crystal Dynamics games that directly contradicts the events of the previous games.
    I know that wasn't the intent, but it is how things are in my head-canon.

    • @Thagomizer
      @Thagomizer Рік тому +1

      @@GeonusKaikun No, he's absolutely right. The writers of the 2013 reboot played *against* the strengths of the original Lara Croft in ways that are truly baffling. It was a strategic error. Lara was cut from the cloth of James Bond, Indiana Jones, Doc Savage, Sherlock Holmes, Flash Gordon, Conan the Barbarian, and the Man with No Name. These are mythic, escapist characters from a bygone era, without the self-conscious introspection, genre deconstruction, or political obsessions of the current age. The naivete of these stories generates a certain awe. We *admire* these characters because how they handle themselves under duress, but we don't *relate* to them.
      And this particular incarnation of Lara Croft is so beleaguered and self-obsessed she doesn't even seem to enjoy her own company. The game appears to think it is an origin story, but doesn't have a clear idea of how to portray the Lara Croft this one will supposedly become. She isn't half as irritating as LAU Lara, but compared to Core's Lara, she's boring as hell. Not that the TR 2013 reboot is a bad game, of course, but it's nothing like classic TR and feel as if it started off development as a different title.

    To me, it'll never make sense how the Rome segment from Chronicles takes place before TR1, aside from the justification that the Philosopher Stone was one of Lara's first finds.
    I get that in TR1 you shoot Larson and Pierre, but it's a less conclusive ending for them that leaves them more open to surviving... Well maybe not for Larson, but definitely for Pierre who falls an incredible height in Chronicles and you can hear him breaking his bones.
    And in the Rome FMV, it's pretty clear every character already know each other, with Lara wondering where Pierre might be as Larson shows himself, so we can rule out that it's their first encounter at least (it's not in TR1 either, at least for her and Larson, am just saying it can't be taken as a definite proof for either side of the argument).
    But Chronicles' writing is so messy at parts, to me it just doesn't mesh well with the rest of the series. I'll always take the Rome and the VCI sequences as "non-canon" for how much they either don't make sense in the continuity, or how badly they destroy their potential. I still believe it's better to think that Lara meets again with Verner Von Croy for the first time in The Last Revelation.
    Also, the Black Island section from Chronicles is definitely taking place after The Last Revelation's Angkor Wat sequence, because in the Black Island she already has the backpack, while she finds said backpack in Angkor Wat.

    • @chexfan2000
      @chexfan2000 2 роки тому

      My longstanding fan theory is that at some point, Larson and Pierre made the foolish decision to Raid a Tomb despite being Larson and Pierre, and not Lara Croft aka The Tomb Raider aka The Only Person in This Universe Capable of Raiding Tombs Without Consequence.
      Naturally the artifact they Raided from the Tomb cursed them, specifically with immortality. Much like South Park’s Kenny McCormick, they are now cursed to die at Lara’s hand every time they meet, only to roll up like nothing happens next time she has an adventure that could use two cartoonish regional stereotypes.

    Great video, although it needs mentioning that the books you talked about at 30.22 are NOT canon. The Amulet of Power wildly diverged from the plots of TR4, TR5, and AoD, missing out or radically changing pretty much EVERYTHING to the point it was obvious the author knew absolutely nothing about the source material and just wrote whatever they felt like knowing it would have the "official" stamp on it. Nothing in the book makes any sense whatever and has no continuity with the games at all. At best, they're speculative headcanon. At worst, they're mistakenly seen as official and taken as gospel, when anyone who has both read them and played the games will know that's incorrect.

      @@Cez24 Ah, but there's a difference between "canon" (officially acknowledged by the publisher/studio as part of the official universe/timeline) and "official" (acknowledged by the publisher/studio but not necessarily part of the official universe/timeline). Amulet of Power is the latter. It says a lot about the commission and the author that the Amulet of Power was such a substandard filler, especially when Murti Schofield *had already written* a sequence of events to bridge that gap. Why Eidos chose to invest in the Amulet of Power story/author when none of it had any connection to the games - when they literally already had a writer on their staff who had already explained everything AND the animation department had even finished fully-rendered FMVs to tell at least part of that story in AoD - is absolutely nonsensical. Really bizarre and saddening.
