This was very well put together and tied a lot of things I’ve forgotten together.. and can I just say how amazing and far the cgi and in game graphics came from their intial debut to the end of the PlayStation One era 🤯
This is a fantastic video covering the timeline. I will never forget the nostalgia I have playing every original tomb raider. The music was insanely good. I miss the old games but I appreciate the modern ones as well! I don't think my favorite old ones will ever get a reboot sadly my discs don't work anymore..😔😭
I was looking for this video for a long time now. Even if the reboot and legend are out of this timeline, it's great to have an overhall explanation behind the Tomb Raider story. Thank you !
My first Tomb Raider game I played was TOMB RAIDER II in 1997 and vividly remember the Venice level. I am stil a fan. But having the story condensed this way I must say. Woah, the storyline is weird. And Lara is the most destructive wrecking ball to archeological sites. Ahhh, I love her. 🤣
The original games are some of my favourite games of all time cos they were atmospheric and challenging. The legend series is also good but not as challenging as the originals IMO and the reboot trilogy is fun but overall just feels like it's trying too hard to be like Uncharted instead of being it's own thing.
I was already in my 20's when the original released. I played it on the Saturn, as I recall. It's easy to dismiss now, but between TR and the first Resident Evil games, we were all blown away by these first games that really started to look vaguely like cinematic experiences. I can even remember telling my buddies that someday, game play graphics would look even better than the rendered cutscenes in Resident Evil 2. God I'm old.
Nice video!! I think this is the first time that I see a video where the story or the plot of the tomb raider series was told chronologically! Well done, guys! Nice job!!
@@SuggestiveGaming now a days peoples are just after uncharted , love that you remember and respect TR classic , legend , rebooted story and telling us chronologically on its 25 anniversary , your efforts are remarkable , excited for remaining 2 parts , especially the 3th part ❤️
after the meteorite it should be Atlantis or before, I don't know. But it means that Natla's story should go from the beginning. Also young Lara already got her backpack in Tomb Raider Chronicles...so Last Revelation's Young Lara should be before that event.
Notice how the longest section is Angel of Darkness... that game used to have a reputation for being the black sheep of the Tomb Raider franchise, but it actually had a pretty engaging story overall (I could've sworn it was taking some inspiration from the Da Vinci code but looking at the release dates I don't think that's plausible). The weakest element of course is Kurtis Trent, but otherwise it's a solid game.
If only the gameplay hadn't been so terrible and unpolished. Oversaturation and burnout killed off the original Tomb Raider, and it became apparent that they were churning out Lara Croft for the sake of Lara Croft rather than Tomb Raider, but it would seem that the original Lara takes all of the blame for that. If the series had remained consistent with the first installment and better aspects of the second one, with more time and thought put into the games rather than releasing one after another year after year, the franchise would probably look much different today. All of this stuff trying to humanize Lara and focusing on combat (particularly human enemies) and the shift away from isolation and the majority of the game being spent actually exploring tombs has been for the worse. I want more than anything just about in the world of gaming for someone to make a modern Tomb Raider that embodies what made the first game from 1996 so awesome. The intrigue, the wonder, the atmosphere, the anticipation of building up to something so exciting and otherworldly. It became more about showing off Lara Croft than having a badass Lara Croft show off the spectacular world building of the first game.
Tomb raider series took many things from movies …. Antarctica was inspired by The Thing , The Atlantean stronghold and the hive by Aliens , Wreck of the Maria doria by titanic …. Luds gate by The Rock … TR 4 by movies like the Mummy and the mummy returns . Nevada was inspired by Independence Day … tr1 natla’s mines by Indiana jones and the temple of doom … there are many more references … throughout the series lost valley by Jurassic park , crash site by The Lost World … Chronicles Contained infiltration missions a la Mission impossible …. And I could go on ….
If you look about the whole Tomb Raider situation from a distance then you can see various bad guys aiming to raid various tombs for various items that have various super powers they want for themselves while Lara Croft simply likes rare and interesting things she likes to collect and keep at her mansion for personal display only. A view angle nobody ever mentkoned :D

I think the two timelines can easily be seen as one and the same, with the Crystal Dynamics games picking up where Angel of Darkness left off. You would simply need to consider Lara's backstory revealed in the Crystal Dynamics games as a retcon to that revealed in the instruction manuals of the original games, rendering the latter non-canon. Since those backstories are not mentioned in the games themselves, there is nothing in the Crystal Dynamics games that directly contradicts the events of the previous games. I know that wasn't the intent, but it is how things are in my head-canon.
I see it too that way. And the new game seems to be the first again. It could be a remaster of all the classis. So that all 11 games can be one timeline.
They are NOT one and the same. The contradictions are too numerous and too obvious. You might as well try to combine Christopher Nolan's Batman movies with the Tim Burton Batman movies.
@@GeonusKaikun No, he's absolutely right. The writers of the 2013 reboot played *against* the strengths of the original Lara Croft in ways that are truly baffling. It was a strategic error. Lara was cut from the cloth of James Bond, Indiana Jones, Doc Savage, Sherlock Holmes, Flash Gordon, Conan the Barbarian, and the Man with No Name. These are mythic, escapist characters from a bygone era, without the self-conscious introspection, genre deconstruction, or political obsessions of the current age. The naivete of these stories generates a certain awe. We *admire* these characters because how they handle themselves under duress, but we don't *relate* to them. And this particular incarnation of Lara Croft is so beleaguered and self-obsessed she doesn't even seem to enjoy her own company. The game appears to think it is an origin story, but doesn't have a clear idea of how to portray the Lara Croft this one will supposedly become. She isn't half as irritating as LAU Lara, but compared to Core's Lara, she's boring as hell. Not that the TR 2013 reboot is a bad game, of course, but it's nothing like classic TR and feel as if it started off development as a different title.
My first TR game was The Last Revelation on PC but growing up I got to catch with the legend series on PS2 then the new reboot trilogy, but I've only played the rest of the original games sporadically so this timeline was confusing to me, although if I remember correctly, Ireland was after Cambodia, besides that I'm really glad to have most of the original series finally explained in chronological order.
@Rylando Restacruz I'm sorry to hear that. I hope your mother treated you as a mother ought to. You are here for a reason. Jesus Christ loves you so much that he literally allowed himself to be tortured to death for you. Remember this whenever these negative thoughts appear.
To me, it'll never make sense how the Rome segment from Chronicles takes place before TR1, aside from the justification that the Philosopher Stone was one of Lara's first finds. I get that in TR1 you shoot Larson and Pierre, but it's a less conclusive ending for them that leaves them more open to surviving... Well maybe not for Larson, but definitely for Pierre who falls an incredible height in Chronicles and you can hear him breaking his bones. And in the Rome FMV, it's pretty clear every character already know each other, with Lara wondering where Pierre might be as Larson shows himself, so we can rule out that it's their first encounter at least (it's not in TR1 either, at least for her and Larson, am just saying it can't be taken as a definite proof for either side of the argument). But Chronicles' writing is so messy at parts, to me it just doesn't mesh well with the rest of the series. I'll always take the Rome and the VCI sequences as "non-canon" for how much they either don't make sense in the continuity, or how badly they destroy their potential. I still believe it's better to think that Lara meets again with Verner Von Croy for the first time in The Last Revelation. Also, the Black Island section from Chronicles is definitely taking place after The Last Revelation's Angkor Wat sequence, because in the Black Island she already has the backpack, while she finds said backpack in Angkor Wat.
My longstanding fan theory is that at some point, Larson and Pierre made the foolish decision to Raid a Tomb despite being Larson and Pierre, and not Lara Croft aka The Tomb Raider aka The Only Person in This Universe Capable of Raiding Tombs Without Consequence. Naturally the artifact they Raided from the Tomb cursed them, specifically with immortality. Much like South Park’s Kenny McCormick, they are now cursed to die at Lara’s hand every time they meet, only to roll up like nothing happens next time she has an adventure that could use two cartoonish regional stereotypes.
Great video, although it needs mentioning that the books you talked about at 30.22 are NOT canon. The Amulet of Power wildly diverged from the plots of TR4, TR5, and AoD, missing out or radically changing pretty much EVERYTHING to the point it was obvious the author knew absolutely nothing about the source material and just wrote whatever they felt like knowing it would have the "official" stamp on it. Nothing in the book makes any sense whatever and has no continuity with the games at all. At best, they're speculative headcanon. At worst, they're mistakenly seen as official and taken as gospel, when anyone who has both read them and played the games will know that's incorrect.
That’s why I didn’t go into too much detail, and we mentioned the original plot for AOD. It was a real “damned-if-you-do or damned-if-you-don’t” situation on including them.
@@SuggestiveGaming Oh, they're damned all right xD (Especially when you read them and keep yelling "WTF THAT NEVER HAPPENED LIKE THAT?!" and upsetting your neighbours...
@@Cez24 Ah, but there's a difference between "canon" (officially acknowledged by the publisher/studio as part of the official universe/timeline) and "official" (acknowledged by the publisher/studio but not necessarily part of the official universe/timeline). Amulet of Power is the latter. It says a lot about the commission and the author that the Amulet of Power was such a substandard filler, especially when Murti Schofield *had already written* a sequence of events to bridge that gap. Why Eidos chose to invest in the Amulet of Power story/author when none of it had any connection to the games - when they literally already had a writer on their staff who had already explained everything AND the animation department had even finished fully-rendered FMVs to tell at least part of that story in AoD - is absolutely nonsensical. Really bizarre and saddening.

The timeline from the AOD companion book places the VCI story after TR2 and before TR3 (which makes sense) and Ireland after Cambodia, so that is why I think that is the most correct version to follow.

Tomb Raider 3 The Adventures Of Lara Croft is by far my favorite. I really hope it get a remake but it's highly unlikely. I would also hope that remake would give us back Lara's classic moves and controls.
Congrats
Now hope I get a billion dollars.
😂😂😂❤
At least they have made a remaster. I have never played the third game much. The first level was so annoying with that swamp that i gave up lol. But i want to finish it now with the remaster, same for the second game. I beat the first one today (this time with no level skip etc lol). The good thing was that you could switch between all of the Tomb Raider games cause you had all of them for ps1 or pc xD
This was very well put together and tied a lot of things I’ve forgotten together.. and can I just say how amazing and far the cgi and in game graphics came from their intial debut to the end of the PlayStation One era 🤯
OMFG YESSS THANK U SO MUCH FOR MAKING THIS !!! TOMB RAIDER IS EVERYTHING TO ME UGGGHHH !!!!
I just started to create content and my 4m video took me nearly a week to make.. Imagine 44m! This is great work!
I like how every ancient power is worthless and Lara stopped all of them
Lara truly is the ancient power of powers.
I would love for these games to come to the Nintendo switch. Being able to play Tomb raider on the go would be amazing
yeah me too, but i doubt they'll do that since i feel like the rights would be shonky. if i were you i'd copy the ps1 games to psp instead.
Me too, perhaps something will be announced at Square Enix presents in 4 days!
Yo you can download them on your phone (tr1/2) but I tell you what it's harder than hell without actual buttons.
I feel ya! My original discs don't even work anymore. I doubt they will ever remaster these good games.
@@LoveHestia_ You hyped for the remasters?
Thank you! I needed a summary because I couldn't understand completely the timeline
Doperoni my homie, I’m here to support one of my best boys
This brought back such amazing childhood memories!
Great job! It's always so good to revisit these first games. It's so nostalgic
The original games are some of my favourite games of all time cos they were atmospheric and challenging. The legend series is also good but not as challenging as the originals IMO and the reboot trilogy is fun but overall just feels like it's trying too hard to be like Uncharted instead of being it's own thing.
I loved this video. A great chronological video of the events of Tomb Raider. I´ve always dream it!
These story writers are wild! Not one single tomb raider story line has disappointed! 👏🏻
This was so good, thank you so much, I’m so excited to watch the legend timeline now!!!
Nice video!! I think this is the first time that I see a video where the story or the plot of the tomb raider series was told chronologically! Well done, guys! Nice job!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
@@SuggestiveGaming I'm looking forward for part 2!
@@SuggestiveGaming now a days peoples are just after uncharted , love that you remember and respect TR classic , legend , rebooted story and telling us chronologically on its 25 anniversary , your efforts are remarkable , excited for remaining 2 parts , especially the 3th part ❤️
You made the Wreck of the Maria Dora sound so simple. That area is brutal!
after the meteorite it should be Atlantis or before, I don't know. But it means that Natla's story should go from the beginning. Also young Lara already got her backpack in Tomb Raider Chronicles...so Last Revelation's Young Lara should be before that event.
I’ve never heard the store in complete order, this was so good!!!
Many of Kurtis' planned abilities were cut, so he ended up playing like a weak version of Lara. If only . . .
This is so awesome the you guys put this together. Thank you so much for taking the time and for me to be able to relive my childhood / teenage time
Wait, in the first game she was sixteen? And they teased her taking her shirt off? Boy talk about different times!
I know🤣🤣 I was like 👀👀
All of these game deserve modern remakes, including chronicles and angel of darkness
Nah, they're gonna retcon the storylines like Anniversary did
As messy as angel of darkness was because of the rush it was an amazing game. I loved running around the Ghetto and the club lol
I love this series, you guys did an awesome job with all of them. I must admit I’ve watch them too many times!
Kurtis was such a badass character.

@@multivact3729 Why not?
This was excellent. These games were a pillar of my childhood... thank you!
"Lara is attacked by a new enemy known as the damned....their leader...Bob" I know it wasn't meant to be funny, but I died laughing.
Never played Chronicles so I didn't know Lara was 16 in that scene....Great look at each continuity though. I grew up with the Legend trilogy & always wanted to play the old ones.
So, basically, at some point prior to 2003, the devs started reading Dan Brown novels. Got it.
The best Tomb Raider era
The original Tomb Raider was my first game. I loved watching this summary.
Both of you did and amazing job with this video cant wait to see what's next !

A 3 Part Video is needed to Explain the Time, Dang, The Tomb Raider Series is Big
This is the best Lara timeline. It's a shame we didn't get a satisfactory conclusion to the AoD saga.
Finally we know who was in Paris.
Who was in Paris?
4:47 😂😂😂❤ I love it
Goodness my! The plot of Angel of Darkness has so many twits
it's been so long since I've played TR on ps1. I forgot how the cutscenes were. janky yet charming. growing up with those graphics makes me appreciate what we have we today. the graphics of yesteryear still hold up to those of us who played with them, but newer gamers are all about the eye-candy and I feel don't understand what games went through to get where we are lol.
This is great part of my childhood 💓 Love every TR game , thanx for making storyline
Can't wait! 🤩
30:53 Lara's model from Angel of Darkness is, by far, the BEST and most GOURGIOUS looking she ever had.
20:56 HOLD UP! Aliens? Element 115?? Treyarch zombies??? It's looking like Miss Lara Croft is the original inspiration for the story/ name of the element 115 for COD Treyarch Zombie's
Yessss I caught that too
Lara croft is now a playable character in call of duty so its probably a coincidence
AOD was the last TR game I bought.
They changed the whole vibe of the games.
Great video suggestive gaming, and great guest! Can't wait for LAU.
Coming soon!
Better Story than the other tomb raiders
Whatever happened to the ultimate experience tomb raider collection that was supposed to come Aug. 27 of last year?
Tr2 has to be my favourite tomb raider game for the level in Venice with the boat. Blew my mind as a kid after that would be angel of darkness. Then would be the first game in the reboot era the story was great and multiplayer was always extremely fun I was so disappointed when rise or shadow never bothered to use it again.
Wow! 1997 Memories , those unforgettable TR2 Venice violins 🎻 I also have fond memories with , Tomb raider Chronicles was one of my favourites , it was the darkest tomb raider ; not sure about any of the reboots tho , I wouldn’t chose them over any of the 6 originals
@@QFilmz oh them violins always had my heart racing when it came on I so agree. I never did actually get to play chronicles that much to completion but I am going through them now as I bought the franchise pack on steam
@@_SYDGAMING_ I played all them 20+ years ago as they were releasing , recently I got a PS vita , I realised I could get all 5 Tomb raiders on it , so I’ve been playing them through , finishing off from where I was 20+ years ago lol I use a guide only when I get VERY stuck , I’m stubborn I wouldn’t use a guide but I was stuck on tomb raider chornicels for 6 months & left it before I finally gave in to use a guide lol
@@QFilmz lol I'm the same way mate as I'm 28. I have played most all them but some I got about half way through and just got annoyed as a kid that it was too difficult hahaha. Though since I did get the franchise pack on steam Xmas sale for 37 euros I could not say no to that it was such a steal it has every game from og to legend saga and reboot. Im enjoying the older games way more now I can actually get a grasp on most of the puzzles.
It would be great to see reboot of original Tomb Raider one day. Besides great work guys!
Fun fact: The original Lara Croft's birthday is February 14th 1968
Just imagine if they’d kept that Lara. She’d have wrinkles and gray hair now.
@@desertrose1226 Still preferable than the whiny ones by crystal dynamics.
While the legend timeline is my favorite there is no denying that the continuity of the classics and the amazing storytelling of these games.
the AoD Story wasn't even that bad, but the unfinished Game and all the bugs oh boy & girl that was a disfigured creature by itself
Why in gods name do you want to replace the awesome backstory of classic Tomb Raider with the awful story of Tomb Raider 2013?
@@roberthartburg266 Because it's really not better at all or all that different and you're looking at it through your nostalgia glasses.
In the early time line surly there was a period with the atlantian rulers (natla, qualapak and tihocan ).. I wouldn't know where they fit though 😅
@@PotkankaI agree with this!.. we need to ask plato

Love this guys! Macho Broccoli 🥦
Great video. Makes me wish we had a live action TR show tht would explore mythos and stuff...
I was in the documentry for this game - ''lethal & loaded'' 🙂
I never knew the guides name. Rip carlos
what? there was really a storyline that made sense? wow.
Francine looks a lot like Janice?! Hehee guess Core Design was really constraint for time with TR:AOD. Awesome vid btw! 😎💪🏽
