  • As violent crime continues to rise across the country, Dr. Phil invites everyday citizens, law enforcement, and policymakers to discuss this burning issue. Alana says she was pistol-whipped, shot in the face, and left for dead during an attempted carjacking at her local supermarket last year. She says she encourages everyone to learn to defend themselves and be aware of their surroundings at all times. Then, Aaron is a former police officer who quit in 2018 because he says he could no longer stand the lack of support from the media and the public regarding law enforcement. Emada Tingirides, an LAPD officer of 27 years, says the police’s priority is safety on the streets. And, Thomas Abt, a lawyer and criminal reform policy advisor, says that while crime is high, it is not as widespread as the media would have us believe. Watch while Aaron, Emada and Thomas debate what they believe to be the solution to the violent crime epidemic. (20089)

    I dont understand without the full context of the discussion. the last guy is trying to take a pragmatic approach to a problem that requires hands on solutions. a slow approach by a cop is still hands on. the former police officer is simply saying that the rhetoric towards cops in violent neighborhoods doesn't permit a delicate approach because the situation doesnt start slow.

    We still need the traditional justice system. Many of the offenders are hardened to where they do not serve a purpose in society other than to commit crime. When released from jail they reoffend and need to do "life on the installment plan". The reason the recidivism rate is high is because of this. It simply controls how many career criminals are out in the population at once. There can be a role for psychological recommendations at sentencing, although relatively few offenders are mentally ill to the point of being inaccountable for their crimes. One thing the system could be better at is predicting which people are likely to be helped by structured treatment plans like drug court, mental health court or others like this. I personally have known several people who accepted a plea like that. There was a group that really benefited and others that held resentment towards it. Those who were not good candidates need to be able to get a sentence of an appropriate length if, after a realistic presentation of what that program is like, they see it is not for them.

      @@Ynh932 The people that commit nonviolent and violent crimes are often both a part of the same strata of society, and often the same people. Although many see nonviolent crime as acceptable, often in poor areas when people steal from each other or commit drug crimes this causes a lot of disruption and sometimes violence breaks out. It isn't the same as when one punk high school kid sells weed to another because that is just a rite of passage.

    There should be annual evaluations on performance. It’s standard in a lot of lines of work and I am not sure if police go through the same. Complaints about conduct need to be taken into account because if an officer has multiple accusations of wrongdoing, something needs to be done about it. The problem lies in the punishment of officers. They feel like they can do whatever they want, because nothing is done when atrocities are committed behind a badge. They get admin leave and a slap on the wrist. Hold officers accountable and, honestly, this problem wouldn’t be as big of a problem. There’s no management happening and that’s where our short comings are coming from.

    Training LEOs beyond a nominal six-week course, expecting them instead to have at least an AA, if not a BS, doesn’t merely serve the purpose of improving an officer’s ability to deescalate, rather than respond with lethal or less-lethal means. By changing the hiring requirements, we could more effectively weed out those officers who are attracted to law enforcement for nefarious reasons, like being violent, racist criminals and getting paid for it.

      Incorrect. I’ve been in law enforcement 10 years and some of the most notable, compassionate, and intelligent officers I’ve worked along side have been those with just high school Deplomas. Having a degree doesn’t mean you’ll be a well rounded person. Experience is more important in LE than a college education. People are misguided when they make comments regarding police training. It may be 6 months of academy, but there’s additional advance training that a rookie cop will have to go through before they are allowed to be on their own. Cops go to different calls each day. Each calls are different. There’s no books you can write to teach policing and how to deal with people. You learn all of this from actually doing it on the job. As a police recruit, the only thing that you can be taught that comes from books are the actual laws and policies. People assume that a social worker can de-escalate a person who is mentally I’ll and high on drugs. This is false, cops deal with people in an uncontrolled environment where you as a cop has to make a split second decision.

    Also the girl who got shot in the face basically said “I didn’t like that he pistol whipped me so I punched him” if your in a position like that your in no place to aggravate the assailant, you need to give them every excuse not to hurt you. So no there should be more police because you where brave and attack an assault. I'm for defunding the police. In my city of San Antonio, TX the trust between the community and police is low. A lot of people don't want to call the police, they don't trust the police, they want nothing to do with the police. On top of that, the SAPD is struggling to recruit new police officers because becoming a police officer has become more of a stigma nowadays.
    Putting resources into other organizations that is trusted by the public and can better handle certain situations is a good move. Because the way things are now, I foresee the divide between the public & officers growing bigger.

    • @chiefkaha5650
      @chiefkaha5650 Рік тому +1

      The police don’t get paid much, theyre short on numbers and resources and you want to defund them? You realise, defunding them gives them less money which means you will probably have no one joining the police. Once that happens, more crime. Now who will you call if there’s gang members or domestic terrorists shooting up a place? Not the cops because there isnt enough to patrol. What needs to happen is better training, your police officers do not have enough training to deal with every situation.

    This is great for TV. The reality is there are so many instances of police bullying citizens because they have a badge. This has lead to a disdain for American law enforcement. Listen to how aggressive this ex cop sounds and how angry he is. He sounds like his military training is how he feels policing should be done. Getting out of the car in the hood? That sounds like you have a serious bias before you even got into your car to drive to work.

    My view about this matter as it stands TODAY... I would say YES but not use the term "defund the police" because truth be told: If everyone has a weapon to "protect themselves", there really isn't a need to provide much funding to the police. If we aren't calling 911 anymore because someone is breaking into our house or if we are being assaulted in the street and then are just coming on the tail end to do the paperwork. If society is being allowed to police themselves with all these weapons, the "POLICE" budget should reflect that.

    There is a lot of prejudice against the police right now, some of it justified, but most not. Here's a way all prejudice works: Say a guy wants to buy a used car. The car salesman greets him, and the guy says, "I hope you got no favoritism towards the police. Those guys are real sons of bitches." That car salesman knows he is over half way to making a sale if he says something like, "yow, the police are a bunch of dogs." He doesn't mention that the police keep his property from being vandalized or stolen. All prejudice works this way. In the past it was strongly against blacks. Back then a customer would be looking at cars, and when the salesman came out he would say something like, "I'm glad there ain't no "n's" in town. I cant stand them." The salesman knew he could make the sale if he agreed with the guy. That's how prejudice becomes ingrained. The human race owes itself better. We should fight against such shoddy logic. It does more damage than you think.

All it takes is two weeks training and a non-refundable deposit for your uniform and bullets, and you're ready to enforce the law, finally get the respect you deserve as a member of the Liberty City Police Department! You'll always be right, meet new members of your community and beat them senseless for getting on your nerves, or because you're drunk.
