The biggest problem we have is making officers police things they aren't trained for. Cops shouldn't be policing mental health, drug abuse, ect. We expect too much out of these men and women. Dr. Phil is right, there needs to be others within the department that are specially trained and are on the streets with the these officers.
No, the biggest problem is how people (left and right) use intentionally controversial terms like ‘defunding the police’ which begs individuals to conflate with ‘abolishing the police’ when, as you’ve stated, almost everyone agrees that police should not be responsible for everything from active shootings, to mental health crises, to truancy charges, to conducting evictions, to traffic stops, and so on and so on. But most of you in America just fall to the bait set by your pathetic politicians (left and right) and seclude yourselves in your little bubbles of confirmation bias whilst the country quite literally burns to the detriment of the children and grandchildren for whom you PRETEND to care. The fact that most people hear ‘defund the police’ and immediately think ‘abolish’ is a testament to how low the average intelligence is of an American in 2022. Quite embarrassing, to be honest. If you haven’t already, you should look into investing in Chinese companies for long term gains because America is basically done.
A big problem is the bias attitude of too many cops. Even if you stripped the racial element, which is an obvious bias that many carry, there is still an elitist attitude that is far too prevalent. There is an "us versus them" mentality that is far too prevalent. There is a "it's a cop, they can do no wrong. They must be in the right" mentality that is far too prevalent. Then we have internal investigations where the same prosecutor that cops feed their cases to is responsible for investigating their alleged wrongdoings? Cop culture in America needed an overhaul decades ago.
I’m so sorry for the loss of your husband. Those of us who aren’t in law-enforcement unfortunately don’t fully understand the impact of the job. The psychological and emotional and physical toll that it takes is something that we have yet to grasp unless you are in law enforcement or have a family member who is in law-enforcement. I’m so thankful for your husband service!
To answer your question; yes, the police are the problem ! Most police officers are under a false illusion; They actually think; once they put on a Badge, they actually think the whole world bows down to them ! It's also gonna be my guess, and i think im right. This police officer was so corrupt, they people stated opening their eyes and realized; a police officer has no power or authority over you, till you commit a crime ! Its my assumption this ex-police officer realized he can't push people around anymore, so he quit. I think im right about my guess. Yes, DEFUND THE POLICE ! People, we don't need police ! We can police ourselves !
Ok I agree with you with everything but the part where you said “we don’t need police, we can police ourselves” that would mean citizens carry tasers a bit of guns and dangerous stuff everywhere which will leave people uncomfortable and think outside is dangerous we CAN not police outselves
Thats been going on for years and years. PRents blame teachers for thier kids failing or getting in trouble in school. It is always everyone elses fault.
Would you think that if you taught the right thing the kids would know their rights when they get out of school or just in general know how to live free as a free human being more than half the stuff that they teach in school is no envoy if you were to teach the kids their constitution I guarantee they would know their rights and you can pinpoint a criminal from a person who knows you’re right it is self explanatory schools do not teach kids the proper things it’s for life in life learn the constitution they should be classes of the constitution in every school that way we are smart educated to understand when we get stopped by a police officer, we know our rights cops don’t know your rights at all as well as traffic tickets etc. etc. knowledge is power. That’s what teachers should be teaching the students knowledge nothing from the past that won’t give you anything for the future God bless his soul.
He's got a lot of excellent points. However, I don't like how one-sided his view is. He seems the type that will be silent when some of his fellow officers are doing just the type of things, that leads to a lot of distrust of police. I'd like to see him address that as well.
Isn't that how a lot of people are now a days? It's either white or black, for some reason society especially the media will not allow a issue to be grey by just giving the facts. You need to know both sides to get all the info but not a lot of people will do that. They just want to listen to what they want to hear.
Also I disagree he seems to be one that would have put police in their place if they were breaking procedure outside of the training given to them before getting on the streets. Expecting them to analyze a situation thoroughly while worrying for their safety and others is unrealistic. Don't react quick enough you are shot and killed. That's the problem with criminals. They harden the police to a point that either they get burned out or harden them to the point that they become bad cops. It's really unfortunate that the good ones leave.
Or he could be one that would expect for other police officers to cover for him if he did something wrong. The fact that he was very one sided made me think exactly that of him. That was kind of a red flag there. He may be one that’s just using this as an excuse. He may actually really be mad that they are no longer able to get away with the things they were getting away with before, or at least it’s harder now for them to get away with those things. He may just be mad about that. 🤷🏻♀️ The fact that he didn’t even acknowledge any valid points from the other side really stood out for me. The other two people on the show were more balanced.
I recently had a conversation with a correctional officer about a traffic stop er encountered together.. It was very subtle, but even though we were in the car together I was no doubt alone in the situation. I was absolutely terrified. His response was, " No one got booked, and he didn't make me get out of the car. It wasn't like that." He can't even see how much of his identity is wrapped up in a police uniform. The powers that be are leading dislike against the police cause there's a new force being created. :/
We need the cops only when there is a crime being committed most of us do not need the cops because the onus is on them are not educated, which is so they are not smarter then off on the list wise up and no homework rights knowledge is power for anybody if the cops home college, they have no power no authority he is out the window. They think they’re smarter than us limit on the system in many ways because the system does not teach off or anything else. That’s where the cops think they have poor authority over us not true we have tea meet the people knowledge is, if you do not help obviously you have no kind of a it would be too many common sense. A teacher teaches ones whatever he or she is not only qualified to teach right for the student which is system up to only teach certain things so we owe if not already need to be educated in your civil rights your constitutional rights, it’s very simple you don’t know your rights you have no rights and the cops take advantage of them that
It shouldn’t be the police vs society, as it sounds like from his perspective. We are all one team. He blames the society for the issues with policing but failed to mention any issue with the police culture that needs serious reform.
Cops are starting to understand what it feels like to get stereotyped and profiled in America. Good cops catch the bad cops, aka uniformed criminals in your ranks. That's not your brother or sister when they make a mess then you guys are pulling overtime to mitigate the community unrest. While they typically sit at home or on desk duty.

I hope he finds peace. However, we need to address the issues that got us here. Cops have to start holding all criminals accountable, even those they share uniforms and workspaces with. Internal affairs process needs an overhaul. Being investigated by those you work with seems like a conflict of interests. There have been PDs with misconduct issues that have had federal oversight, which is an outside audit of police practices. Once the external and independent federal oversight came, their misconduct incidents dropped.

@Roman Rivers I’m just saying, how often does someone get treated with force from the police unless there is a crime committed or they have reason to believe there has been or will be? If you cooperate, 9 times out of 10 you will be treated with the same respect you show to them.
@Roman Rivers I’m not saying every situation requires force. But to think police just go around looking for people to beat up or shoot is just not accurate

How do you tell the difference between a good cop and a bad cop? You cannot until it's too late. You assume they are all bad. And very much the same way they assume you are lying to them.
Or we could go by innocent until proven guilty. If we don't know whether or not they're bad, give them the benefit of the doubt. Look for the good in people. If you assume that they're all bad, you could always be paranoid around them or develop a hatred for them.
@@healingthroughchrist1988 the thing is, it doesnt matter how WE see them, the problem is they see US as guilty until proven innocent and taught to escalate instead of de-escalation.
The problem I have is the police' reliance on firearms to resolve a situation when it clearly wasn't necessary. The claim is then made that it was officer safety. If more people knew how much importance cops place on this selfish idea they may never have called them in the first place. Does a firefighter not enter a burning building for firefighter safety?

I can’t stand most cops. And no. I NEVER call 911. When you dial that number, you’re calling in an ego with a gun. What good would that do me? Some years ago, my house was burglarized and a HUNTING knife was left on my bed by whoever broke into my house and stole my laptop, purse, etc. Do you think the police that responded came inside to look around, or collect the knife, or take a statement from me or my roommates? It's funny how everyone is saying “love your first responders” in these comments....when we're literally, specifically talking about cops. People love trying to gaslight a whole community when people are trying to hold only one community responsible for the not recognizing the injustices in their line of work as a whole.
Exactly. The only thing I got from this is this tyrannic corrupt cop can't do that anymore because people have cameras now and the media is actually backing up the civilians for a change. "It's not the same anymore"

The issue is that the police know who is causing issues in a town but nothing happens till there's an issue. This is for most crimes. The police can even know when children are doing gang related activity but instead of intervention, they call them job security. There is also a drastic level of difference between techniques of de-escalating a situation and rarely is there any accountability of this. The problem isn't after the fact or during, it's that nothing is done with those who are issues or repeat offenders and the community doesn't want them to "help" them either.
If good people held bad people accountable you wouldnt even need the police. Some of the most dangerous communities have a no snitch policy, people continue to create children in dangerous environments, men aren't shamed for abandoning their children and leaving them to the streets. BLM march for people like George Floyd's who happily held a woman at gun point and the rest of the community joined them but the same community don't seem to care that back women are killed every 5 hours by black men. That is LITERALLY what “defund the police”means, though. It’s taking a look at the over all budget and only having police officers do police work. Adding staff for non-violent situations where mediation is needed and person with a gun isn’t.
That actually makes no sense lol so you want a mental health professional to be the first to respond based on who’s assessment of the person who is acting out? Or are you operating under the assumption that all of those acting out have mental health issues? It’s all good until you need a cop and a psychiatrist shows up 🙄
Why would someone become a cop? A job where there’s a good chance you’ll be shot, everyone hates you, pay sucks, and you’ll be blamed for every terrible cop’s decisions. There’s good cops that have walked away because it’s just not worth it anymore, the stress of that job would be unbearable

Cops act like they are the only ones who face violence. Violence is a fact of life. Everyone deals with it in some way or other. Cops actually sign up to be in that position. But in all actuality, policing is not as violent a line of work as people make it out to be. It’s their training that actually introduces violence into situations that could’ve been deescalated. No one forced a cop to kneel on a man’s throat. It’s so irritating that they take no accountability for that toxic police culture.
That who takes no responsibility?? Who's damn fault is it? Why should him or any other cop take responsibility for something they didn't do? That's the annoying part. You don't get to have every officer answer for the actions of others. That's why individuals are held accountable. Would you expect that when a politicized group of rioters does something bad, that officers begin treating all protestors with force? Well why should all cops be lumped into the same boat. Nobody is denying that some in the police force overstep and break laws. But cops on the whole don't need to apologize or admit to that

Phil, your comments are incorrect. To say; put someone who's mental, put him in handcuffs first. You're already inviting a lawsuit. Or did I hear that wrong ? Remember; putting your hands on anybody absent of a crime, that's a personal lawsuit. And for this ex-police officer to say; it's no longer worth it; that tells me; he's been a corrupt Police Officer the whole time. The Public have woken up and realized; police officers have been VIOLATING Our Constitutional Rights all along. Police Officers now realize; We The People learned about Our Constitutional Rights, and therefore now we are suing police officers on a personal level. I'm gonna say; that's why police officers are quitting, they can no longer abuse The People and get away with it.

He is right that there is some unjust hate for police officers BUT if you are a cop and murder someone on the job you will statistically get no jail time. Police officers who don't like the fact that people hate police should push for full time body cameras and higher standards for people who want to become police (aka its harder to become a cop, but more training for those who get hired). There will always be people who hate cops but there's a reason that in America, where cops have the most leeway for a first world country at least, we have so many problems with cops. Instead of saying 'it's not worth it to be a police officer' he could fight for reform to make sure the police he works with are trustworthy so the community he polices can start rebuilding trust in their officers. People should realize the hate for police has come from SOMEWHERE, and the police need to work to fix it. There is a reason other countries that have similar wealth to the U.S. don't have people marching in the street every other day to try to bring attention to police brutality.
I understand what you’re saying however it comes to a point where the stigma around cops is nearly irreversible. The problem is that cops like this man have probably saved someone’s life yet are still hated because of their job title. Its not worth fighting for because the GOOD cops who genuinely want to help get so much hate and backlash for just being a cop. this one man himself simply cannot fix that deep-seated bias himself. There is no point in fighting for a cause that nobody supports as you get hate EITHER WAY. Just because someone is a good cop doesn’t mean they can control the actions of the bad ones or even ‘inspire” them to be better. An evil cop will always be an evil cop & sometimes you just have to walk away and discontinue any association with such.
its unfair to say that police don’t know where it comes from- because a lot do, and a lot of tried to stand up and prove themselves as “good” yet the bad apples outshine any good deed and ruin it for everyone like i said before.

Also, yes there are a ton of bad people but there are people that get hurt, discriminated, and even killed for petty things or are innocent. There’s undoubtedly a racial component in policing. Even if you support police like I do you need to acknowledge that to make progress

Wow glorifying this idea that it's not the job of police to cater to vulnerable populations!! Protect and serve includes people who are emotional or mentally confused when cops arrive: it's like cops think if they are expected to serve special populations they should be able to use force on the people calling the cops or other innocent people. Defund the police is a call for funding to be properly spent on training so this video is pretty misleading on the issue all together.
You’re obviously NOT a social worker. Who do think we call when someone has deteriorated to the point when they are throwing furniture at fellow residents and staff ?? We call the police. We already have funding for people who do my job taking care of the emotional, psychological and medical needs. Without first response officers myself and many of my clients who have been hospitalized for serious injuries. Nice armchair quarterbacking but thank God you’re not in charge of defunding police departments because guaranteed you’d be the first person running for cover when the SHTF which happens regularly when you’re working with vulnerable ( violent, hallucinating ) people.
If somebody has mental health issues, I couldn't possibly care less if they're violent and can't be reasoned with. We don't need violent weirdos out free. Most people who are disturbingly murderous due to mental health issues are schizophrenic and they decided on their own that they don't wana take their meds anymore.
The biggest problem is cops arresting people for self-defense. Curtis Sliwa was arrested many times for defending seniors in the subway against criminals.
Financial aid program specific to criminal rehabilitation. Upon release you should be on probation and given financial aid for schooling in a career field. Probation ends on date of graduation. If you pass requirements while in prison, online education should be available. Eliminating the excuses. I hear a felon tell me I can't get a job now. Did you talk to a lawyer try to have your record sealed? Did you apply for financial aid or go through the SBA loan program for small business? You're willing to risk your life to fullfill criminal activities. You're not willing to go to school or try to start a business? You can't commit crimes against society, then expect society to feel bad for you. You have to step up and fix your problem.
The biggest problem we have is making officers police things they aren't trained for. Cops shouldn't be policing mental health, drug abuse, ect. We expect too much out of these men and women. Dr. Phil is right, there needs to be others within the department that are specially trained and are on the streets with the these officers.

@@forrestfey In the United States, you only get 6 months at the police academy
@@forrestfey that doesn’t mean they are trained in mental health. Those take degrees.

To answer your question; yes, the police are the problem !
Most police officers are under a false illusion;
They actually think; once they put on a Badge, they actually think the whole world bows down to them !

Get out of here..."it's not the same anymore" he can't be a tyrant anymore with people knowing their rights now and having cameras
It's really unfortunate that the good ones leave.
check out his business page and look at his experience on the force and his wife… both retired because of the nonsense where we live.
It wasn't like that."
He can't even see how much of his identity is wrapped up in a police uniform. The powers that be are leading dislike against the police cause there's a new force being created. :/

This makes no sense. He didn't say "accident", he said INCIDENT. Which is exactly what it was; an incident that led to where we are today - that's not a negative thing to say. He sounds like he agrees that it was a horrific and tragic event that occurred.
This is so true! Good for him!
My brother from another mother! I'm proud of you bro! I'm still waiting for those pictures. 😂 You're the best.
When you work in a prison long enough you realise it’s not the crime that’s the problem it’s people’s mental health and for some people that don’t know they have a mental health condition idk how it is in USA but in the uk the police system is a total mess claiming there there to serve and protect yet they will destroy your life if they so choose
'They can have mental health specialists there after they've been put in handcuffs' Does he realize that police calls aren't black and white? 5150, health checks, etc. are all delt with by cops. Access the call then send the properly trained individuals. Ffs Phil
I love our first responders! And give all my thanks and support to them. If there is a division between police and society, I will always stand on the police side of the line. No questions!
Even if one kills your mother or kid in cold blood? You can't give a hoot for your family if you say that.make no mistake, it can happen to you.
@@babyblu76 no actually I think about the time armed intruders broke into my house while I hid in the upstairs closet. They saved my life and ended in a shootout, that began with the intruders firing first. If it wasn’t for the police I likely would not be here. One was a rapist fresh out of prison and the other two are career criminals. So when I think about the police I thank God I have someone to call when I can’t help myself. Locked and loaded now. Have a good day.
So, you're pro police state? How about we stand on the side of the law, and no matter your capacity in society when breaking the law, you're still held accountable? RULE OF LAW...no one is above it. Unless we make a mockery of the Constitution, and our ethos in this country are just bumper stickers to be posted on cars.
@@bobbysmitty1628not anywhere did he state he was a pro police state. He said he supports the police. If you get robbed call a social worker. Far reaching.
@@LCee7 He said that he would literally stand on the side of the police over society NO QUESTIONS lol. That is the essence of a police state. People need to really think about their unyielding loyalties. Police are also judged by law like any man. RULE OF LAW !!
I think police just need better & frequent training & reviews of their work. This requires more funds. There are 50 yr old cops in my town, 100+ lbs overweight, they let their buds off the hook if they get pulled over and slam a broke college student with a $200 turn signal ticket. But drug & gang activity is ignored completely. It's a shame to say.. but this i s reality for small town America.
I should say i live in a small Iowa city about 3 hrs from Chicago and all the thugs are moving here because they can sell drugs, live cheap & send the money back home & the cops freaking IGNORE IT ALL bc they aren't trained to deal with this level of criminals. Every week they are lined up at the Western Union to send their money back to their dealers.
Let cops Be Cops, so another words let me be a tyrant.
Good god. Shut up.
Pretty much what I'm hearing
I'm not pro police by any stretch of the imagination. I don't like them in my rear view mirror either, but it's things like this that you're saying that are the reasons why we're in the situation that we're in as a country. I hope they all quit and people don't have anybody to call quite frankly. I can protect my own self.
@@Ma007rk good. when they quit, men will have to man up to protect their loved ones, and women will have to jump off the "all men are bad" feminist train, because they will need men to protect them.
Im gonna be a police officer In the future so me seeing all the people saying “ cops kill more then thugs” is just stupid. Cops protect us and yes I’ve seen cops do more harm then good and I experienced cops being bad to my family and me but still.
Can't blame this man for thinking this way. The reward don't outweigh the risk. And there's been so many mishaps. That being an officer of the law isn't worth it and it is not the same as it was 20 to 30 years ago
I have 10 years to go and I'm hanging by a thread
I don’t blame him! It’s horrible how police are now treated. I take every chance I get to thank an officer and have the “back the blue “ car sticker and sign in my yard.
You are part of the problem
@@cod101wiiowenjaquithojhow's that part of the problem? Supporting those who uphold the laws aren't a problem. You are the problem because you support lawlessness
This is what happens when you have no fathers in the home and you don't discipline your kids. Society as a whole suffers.
6 more months of training for cops wouldn't hurt either.
I think four years of police education is mandatory in Finland. Tree years in police collage is mandatory in Sweden and Norway.
Require a degree in Constitutional LAW for any job in LAW enforcement.
Police train constantly. People have no idea how much training have. More training is not the solution.
Thank you for your service, Aaron.
Why put your life on the line when a offender is only a slap on butt?
I hate when they say defund the police, and say reform as if they mean the same. When you defund you are taking money out. If actually she police as a problem you should be putting more money in policing. Money into training, training does not only include physical, but mental, how to negotiate, what do in certain situation, how to apprehend suspects, etc, community outreach. Fix the relationship that is broken.
All that putting more money into policing did was increase the prison population astronomically and not help rehabilitate people who committed non-violent crimes back into society
@@cod101wiiowenjaquithoj Then that becomes a legal reform. There also something with the culture as well. My issue is that it’s not only the police. All the fault not be on the police. I there should be more education on the legal system. People to be more educated on their rights. The fact is police are already short staffed as it is. Everyone plays apart as well.
In every profession you have two types. Those who are dedicated because the believe in what they do and then there are those who do it for alternative reasons. Power, prestige, money etc. The sad thing bad cops just like bad nurses, lawyers etc. Get all the attention.
And they also get protected by the good ones and by the system.
Blue lives matter I love you guys. I don't blame you one stinkin' minute. A while ago my husband was hired as a PO and he decided not to take the job(this was when 8 cops were gunned down in TX) like maybe 10 years ago? He's using his college degree for a dental pharmaceutical and medical rep and so on. We support you fully thank you for your help every day.
One bad cop makes them all look bad. They have too much power. They shouldn't be able to take someone hostage unless their crime has a victim.
I say they should black list all the ones who hate the cops and turn there backs on the cops and never answer there calls when they need a cop
Ideas like that are exactly why we hate cops
Yup, like people who live in the hood. Don't deploy any officers out there even for a 911 emergency. Let them figure it out on their own 😂
@@alicianelson1252well you don't like them regardless of what they do so you just want them to let people do what they want. I know how you people work. You just like lawlessness.
Society hasn’t made them the enemy his coworkers that act badly and do corrupt things are the ones that did that to him. Garbagemen have a more dangerous job than they do. It’s a fact that there are much more dangerous jobs than being a police officer. He needs to blame the right ppl not those that call out the behavior.
@@backhurts11 Police Officer isn't even top 5, no matter what Newsmax or OAN tell you.
Good cops gotta hold bad ones accountable. If we are honest police and government are in a service role to the people. On a level I don't blame an individual police officer they are not trained well
Saying an individual officer is not trained well is wrong, because every single day officers are asked to do more and more things and keeping up with it is impossible. Training never stops and changes to how officers deal with situations change every day.
I can definitely understand his reasoning.
I don’t blame him. The police are always the bad guy. And they are being defunded

The police here will pull a gun on you if they can't find someone who violated their parole at your house. The police here will sit and watch traffic hidden and pull you over for a license plate light out or something minor like that. Drunk drivers? Aggressive drivers? They do nothing about it.
Yep ^^^
