You shouldn't really be splicing on to existing cables as this can overload the circuit and either blow fuses or cause fires. All manufacturers provide multiple unused spare fuses in the fuse box for you to introduce additional accessories. Had you purchased a new Ranger, these now have a dash cam socket fitted next to the rear view mirror.

I can fully understand where you are coming from, I didn't splice the existing cable, but fed the new cable into the back of the existing connector onto the terminals, and secured with tape. because the plug is static, there is little chance of it coming undone, also the reason i did this is if i need to remove it to take it back to the dealer there will be no trace of it being there. The camera wont over load that circuit as it only draws milliamps and the reason i piggy backed it off the 12V socket was to activate the camera when the car turned on. Usually that circuit is rated at 10A so all i will do is make sure that I don't plug in anything over 9A to make sure it doesn't overload. There was a $18K difference in price between what I got and what the ranger would have cost for the equivalent product so I couldn't justify it. I hope this explanation makes sense why I did it how I did it

Does that run when the vehicle is off, parking mode, or only when driving.

This particular version has a g sensor in it, so when it feels a shock it starts recording if the vehicle is off. But other then that, its like having it plugged into your 12v socket on your dash
