Yeah, I try already when I bought the mirror to hotwire and the battery go dead so I decided to use that cigarette lighter i’ll be using like that for almost 2 years with the cigarette lighter. No problem. This problem came by two weeks ago.
How about wireless (bluetooth) like the ear bud link to your cellphone. I really hope that will happen, too much wiring and I don't like it, especially if you are leasing your vehicles.

Sure you can, but you shouldn't! There is one very solid reason for this - draining your battery! OBD ports are designed to be always powered, unlike fuses. ... and the distance between your OBD port and your driver side fuse box is less than 10cm away, as long as your car was made in the last 15 years.
@@Daveheardt not sure what you mean, because the camera's been installed for a year now after seeing this approach and there's never been a problem with my battery.
@@avecrux333 I was very clear with my explanation. There is ton of materials on the internet, and on youtube, on why one should not be using the OBD port for permanent power source
I was hesitant to run a wire from the engine compartment, where the fuse box is on my wife's Jeep Patriot, into the passenger compartment. I saw your suggestion of the OBD connection, and ordered the part. Turned into a half hour job. Thank you sir, you are a lifesaver!
Good video. I had the OBD with an on and off switch. Worked a d seemed to minimize battery drain on a seldom driven car. Here is another option: I attached a USB power pack battery to my sun visor, and connected cam to the visor power. I have two battery packs and swap them out. My Anker battery has a draw string type case, and it stays in place on the visor with thick quality rubber bands... I just slide out the battery to swap out. The case and rubber band stay in place. I put cardboard (disposable coffee cup liner) on the visor to make sure the rubber band did not damage my visor (to reinforce). Waiting for car manufacturers to have USB ports at the top of visor and headliner. Drive safe and keep well.
Hi R S! that is actually a great idea, but yeah they really need to start putting a simple USB port up there, it would make life so much easier for a lot of people LOL Thanks for watching bud and cheers from California! 🍻
I agree, this is probably the best, straightforward dashcam related video I have seen. No frills, no bs. This guy doesn't want attention, he genuinely just want to help and teach people. Good going Alex!
Thanks for this. I wanted to mention that many cars have a dome light or map lights just above the rear-view mirror. The power lead(s) for those lights can be accessed with a minimum of effort by removing the light unit and connecting a new feed into the light feed, then run a new lead out to the camera, usually through the gap where the headliner seems to meet the windshield but usually doesn't. This saves all the work (and a lot of wire) in running a power feed and ground all the way up the A-Pillar and across to the camera mounting area. The next closest power access is at sun visors that have a lighted mirror. That's a nice car you have there! Beautiful dashboard and interior. I see it's a stick too! Nice.
Thanks to you - I just finished the dashcam install on my 2023 Hyundai Tucson. The OBD USB C connector was only $18 on Amazon. Tucking the wires behind the necessary panels proved to be quick and easy and no more dangling power cords to my vehicle's USB and 12V power ports in my line of sight. I've set my OBD device to turn on and off with the ignition. VERY handy.
Dash cams should be installed in the dead center of the windshield just behind the mirror or slightly lower than the rearview mirror. This position gives the camera the best view through the front windshield for better angles if an accident happens. If you have it in the lower left hand corner it will have huge blind spots on the right hand side just right of the outer fender area. Please everyone do your research and install your dash cam in the center of the windshield and also make sure you double check for glare. Also i would always recommend getting a dash cam that has a rear facing camera so that you can catch everything thats happening throughout the vehicle and behind you and even you and your passengers. My rear facing camera has saved me tremendously. As for hard wiring most Dash Cams have a hard wire kit available online.
Hi Reseller Rockafeller! My Garmin so far has recorded really good video from that angle, it may be due to its wide angle lens, but using the same method the wire could be run higher up the A pillar while tucking into the trim, this should position the camera higher for better coverage. I have to agree with the dual camera recommendation, it definitely helps having a second angle to capture a full picture of what led to crash. Thanks for watching and commenting bud!
I think he means rear facing camera as in… mounted on the rear windshield, to catch scenarios where one gets rear ended. The rear facing camera you’re describing (recording interior of one’s own car and passengers) is also a valid scenario, but is typically only used by Uber drivers. Or if one has a high end car that is in parked by valets (“Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”).
Awesome solution for me. I have leased cars and don't want the hassle of pulling panels, tapping the fuses and then pulling it all out in a couple of years. This is easy. Didn't know it existed! Thanks!
Bro, your well spoken. Easy on the eyes and easy to listen to. I also like how you articulate your logic and offer various alternatives for different scenarios. Thanks bro. God Bless
This was an EXCEPTIONAL video!!! 1. You got straight to the point. 2. You explained yourself VERY WELL. 3. None of what you explained was confusing 4. The ONLY REASON I could tell that English is your second language, is because you have an accent. Other than that, your knowledge and cool personality came through very well Thanks for doing this very informative and helpful video
Thank you so much. Came across this video trying to find a way to put in my dashcam without having the wire hang down for the 12V and the fuses were too small for hardwiring (plus a tad complex for me). This was so easy to do, but I'd have had no idea it was even a thing if I'd not seen this. I bought an OBD2 extender to shut the power off all together since I don't need it on while in the garage, but it looks so professional I can't even tell I'm the one that did it. Thank you thank you thank you!!!
Thanks for this video. It’s one of the most useful I’ve found. Wired my Dashcam using the OBD 2 connector. Installation took only about 15 minutes. Looks professionally installed and works great!
Same me I'm using OBD2 but it means it will be like CCTV and if your dash cam doesn't save the impacted clip, you will lose it, as it will record over it.
I’m in the dash-cam due diligence mode. I’ve watched probably 20 so far. Your videos are far superior to any others I’ve seen. As I stated, I’m in the early stages of learning and trying not to go so fast I regret choices. I’ve seen several 😊 videos and they seem to be very good. But you must like Garmin.
Thank you Jan! Here is also my follow up video showing video from this angle as well as from other different angles to help you decide the best one for you ua-cam.com/video/F7OzM2i7ErE/v-deo.html Cheers!
First great info and video! Also thank you for the links on the connectors! Just bought new cams for my daughter's car as well as mine! And was looking at the hardwire kits on line! And really didn't want to run them hot to the fuse box! Glad I Googled a little further to find your video! Many Thanks for your help!!
Thank you for the tip. I was going to hardwire my dash cam since I have an overhead power console but this ended up being a much easier, cheaper and cleaner solution overall.
Just to add that in Parking mode, your camera should be plugged in live all the time, that's why hardwire is the best option. However you have to find a fuse that's Live even if the car is off for it to work. In my Toyota I tapped on the ACC fuse which is 25 amperes I believe. Dashcams only require 3 amp fuse so a 10amp fuse or bigger are your best options.
@Ellen ioann I ended up going on Amazon and buying a dash cam kit that has a way to keep camera on even if car is off but if it reaches too low of voltage required to start car it turns off. So far ive had dash cam in for about 1 month with no problems starting car. I wired the dash cam kit wire to fuse panel and then other end is a mini-usb that plugs into camera which I have mounted on Rear View mirror.
@@TopBoi93 Compare the power consumption of the camera to how many watt-hours of energy your battery stores. eg: 1kWh(1 kiloWatt = 1000 Watts) battery / dashcam that draws 6W = 166 hours. In reality you wouldn't want to drain the battery to anywhere near empty though. 1Wh = the amount of energy used to supply 1W for 1 hour.
Hi Glen! unfortunately this is the only location where we can legally place our dashcams here in California :( However you could place the dashcam higher by running the cable up the A Pillar if desired, hope this helps and thanks for watching bud!
@@AlexAutoFun Ah ok, I just thought it's a funny contradiction. Great video though, and fantastic idea with the OBD power supply. Do you know if it works with the older vehicle's OBD outlet? I have a 2001 Subaru and the new OBD readers can't read the data from it.
@@GlenEdwards LOL yeah now that you mention it I just realize it is! thanks man, oh yes regarding the OBD power cable the oldest car I have used it with is a 2003. For a 2001 one is possible it may not have full OBD2 compatibility since it wasn't required back then. The good thing is that if the Port looks like the typical OBD2 port shape (here is a video showing how it looks ua-cam.com/video/hEmvv8M8bGI/v-deo.html ) then it should at least have the power pins functional, which should be enough to get the OBD adapter to work. If you do order it and are able to confirm it works please let us know!
@@AlexAutoFun You can place dash cams in CA in either a 7 inch square on the bottom of either side of the windshield, or in a 5 inch square in the top middle where the rear view mirror is.
@@deedle6073 Hi deedle! do you have by chance the statue where you found this on? last time I checked it was either side (with the dimensional restriction of five inches for the driver side and seven inches for the passenger side) but it did not include the top middle, it be great if they have updated the VC on this, please let us know bud!
It obstructs your visibility when making a left turn, I can't imagine you get a clear view recording on your driver side, in my opinion it should be on the center of your windshield behind the rearview mirror and hardwire is not so bad in fact it's actually really more professional than your way but as i said that's my opinion
Hi Tony V! I think you got some good points, I couldn't see myself hard wiring the camera, just love the Shelby too much to cut into it anything. But to your point I have another video coming up where I compare different locations so you we can see how each looks, will make sure to try the center as well! thanks for watching bud!
@@AlexAutoFun I have my Garmin 56 mounted to my rear view mirror to keep it out of the sun and for a better camera view . Plus it's with in arms reach if I need to hit the capture button.. BTW my other Dash Cam in the wife's car is an older Cobra Drive HD Drive, it has the park mode built in (no extra cable) it's detects motion and has the G-sensor.
Wow, thank you sir!! I didn't know about this way of connecting my dash cam. I've been currently using the Cig Lighter adapter and wanted to hard wire it instead but I'm sure glad I came across your video!
Thank you. I have a great mirror cam and my Ford Fusion. But I couldn't wire it because it's so hard to get to the fuse box. This is a perfect solution.
I did this.... excellent idea. Works 100% too. I've got the camera just to the left of the rearview mirror (UK here). Easy to place the cable into the headlining and then just thread it down behind the rubber over the panels.
Thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was also really worried about messing with wires, not only because I'm a novice but also because I'm worried about risking the warranty on my car. I really appreciate this video! =)
Ah, I wouldn't mess with OBD connector as it has direct CAN access. If anything goes wrong with the adapter you have and shorted some pins, it's going to throw CEL code or strange stuff can happen to your car.
Totally agree, rather than meddling with the OBD, might as well fix another cigaret lighter for USB adapter around that area. (going to patent this idea Hahaha)
So this depends on the adapter, assuming the one you buy is from a reputable source. To clarify here, OBD port for power is not harmful to the car in any way. The pins these adapter uses are power pins and go direct to battery, they do not go to your cars computer. Every diagnostic tool out there uses these same pins and they draw more power than a cam.
awesome video, to the ones who say bad placement or its lazy etc, not everyone wants to do it this way, not everyone has the time etc, I've done it this way and the other way hes shown in another video, no issues. also, where you place the dashcam is really up to you, some people just get triggered for anything 😂 keep up the videos, i enjoy watching em and hearing your accent ✌🏻
man very well explained, totally enjoyed you video, unfortunately just yesterday I bought the hardwire kit, now looking at your video, I might of made an error, I have a Toyota camry 2021, which one of the OBD would suit me best, My dash cam is the Azdone m550, looking forward to hear from you, keep up this good work that you are doing
You're welcome donald! I think you are going to better off with the hardwire kit for the M550 (good choice on dash cam btw!) The OBD2 adapter can only provide 2A of power and the Azdome needs 2.5A you also get the benefit of enabling parking mode. Hope this helps, and here is my hardwire video in case you want to see that process ua-cam.com/video/K2iKXj82354/v-deo.html Cheers!
I learned some good stuff about the OBD2 connector, nice video - thanks. Now I am concerned in the position you put the dashcam it could block your view. I have only installed about 6 dashcams but everytime I installed up near the top of the windshield in the middle but just on the passenger side. It was always pretty easy with my spudgie to guide the wire behind the molding all the way down the pillar. Most gloveboxes pop off by squeezing it seems, so put behind that and then up the center console to the cigarette lighter plug. Wire was invisible, not pinched and no visibility problems. But again I like the idea of the ODB2 voltage pick off. I agree with the comment that cars should have a 12 volt connector behind the rear view mirror or something.
Hi Ralph! Thank you! glad to hear it helped. But yeah the location is kind of unfortunate, here in California this is the only location where we can legally place our dashcams ugh However the dashcam could be placed higher by running the cable up the A Pillar and specially high in the middle, I definitely agree that is probably the best place to place it. Thank you for watching and commenting Ralph!

Hi @Autofun thanks for the informative video! A few questions however: Which types of dash cams can this method work with? Is there any risk of the battery dying out due to powering the dash cam? Oh, and can this power the rear camera too?
Hi Shah! the OBD adapter is available in two styles, micro USB and mini USB. If your dashcam has one of those connectors it will work for you. Regarding the battery drain, the adaptor has a automatic shut off, once the battery gets too low, it will turn it's self off to prevent leaving you stranded. Hope this answers your questions and thanks for watching!

Thank you so much in advance. Regards.
@@parimal3506 Thank you Parimal! Ah that's a good question (often a debated one) you would want to check your State's law. In my State supposedly the law prevents a Dealer from denying warranty if someone added something to their car or worked on their own car as long as whatever was added or the work that was done was not the cause of the failure. So let's say you put window tint on your car and your transmission fails, it would be difficult for the dealer to deny it because the tint or the tint install did not affect the transmission. But as simple as that sounds, there are horror stories of dealers not honoring warranty if they see a modification claiming it is what led to the failure. Some owners even had to take them to court or complained directly to manufacturer (since dealers are typically independently owned) to get their warranty honored. Cheers!

Great video and you really have good expertise Thank you! But at what point does the obd power adapter detect the battey is to low? Or at what voltage is the signal ticked off?
Thanks joe sno! the adaptor cuts off the power when battery reaches 11.6V I haven't gotten to that point yet but I imagine it would depend on the size of the battery or how old it is. Hope this helps!
Hi JerseyJoe, that is correct, the placement of the camera lower on the dash will show more hood than higher on the windshield which while it works for me may not suit everybody. A higher location will show more road and would only require routing the cable a little higher up the A pillar. Thanks for watching bud!

I was hesitant to run a wire from the engine compartment, where the fuse box is on my wife's Jeep Patriot, into the passenger compartment. I saw your suggestion of the OBD connection, and ordered the part. Turned into a half hour job. Thank you sir, you are a lifesaver!
Glad to hear it helped out! thanks for watching Jack!
I wonder if a solar powered one would work as well. Gonna try a power pack first too, just for recording overnight.

@@FactStormI couldn't have said this better... You are absolutely correct... This guy just wants to help people succeed!!!
Nice.
Thank you discerningmind! An good input on that secondary source of power. Cheers!
@@AlexAutoFun Thank you. You're new to me and I'm just perusing your channel page now. You have a lot of videos!
How has your rear facing in car camera saved you? I don’t need me and my passengers face on camera.
@@LuckyCharms777 could prove you weren’t distracted or on your phone when the accident happened if the other party claims you were.
Unfortunately some cars have sensors in the center right under the rear view mirror and the dash cam has to go on the sides of the windshield
Thanks!

Tapping fuses can be very easy on at least some cars to be fair, in mine for example it would be easier than using something like the OBD connector.

Havent had any problems? I have mine set up to my cigarette lighter but I want it to be able to record overnight.
I ordered a mirror power adapter on AMZ to connect to my powered mirror (it has a compass and Homelink buttons). It worked flawlessly on my Hyundai.
Very good info Jeremy thanks for sharing! also here is my hard wire video in case you want to take a look bud! ua-cam.com/video/zbxYA4VhuT8/v-deo.html
But will it drain battery? I read reviews saying some can leave battery dead
@@chrisb8870 has your battery been drained completely at all since then? I am looking to get one and am also worried about the battery draining.

@@msi4226 If you want to record parking issues and the cigaret lighter is not powered if the ignition is off, you will see the problem.

You're welcome donald! I think you are going to better off with the hardwire kit for the M550 (good choice on dash cam btw!) Hope this helps, and here is my hardwire video in case you want to see that process ua-cam.com/video/K2iKXj82354/v-deo.html Cheers!
Hi @Autofun thanks for the informative video! A few questions however:
Which types of dash cams can this method work with?
Is there any risk of the battery dying out due to powering the dash cam?
Oh, and can this power the rear camera too?
Hi Shah! the OBD adapter is available in two styles, micro USB and mini USB. If your dashcam has one of those connectors it will work for you. Regarding the battery drain, the adaptor has a automatic shut off, once the battery gets too low, it will turn it's self off to prevent leaving you stranded.
Cheers!
Great information and presentation. Gave me a few alternatives.

Can’t get a full view of the road in that location !!
Hi JerseyJoe, that is correct, the placement of the camera lower on the dash will show more hood than higher on the windshield which while it works for me may not suit everybody. A higher location will show more road and would only require routing the cable a little higher up the A pillar. Thanks for watching bud!
I enjoy the video and explanation. I recommend buying the Owlcam that comes with all the features built-in.
Thanks Eddy! ahh I will look into the Owlcam, maybe add to the list of Dash Cams to review, thanks for the tip bud!
@@AlexAutoFun Of course my friend, I have it and it is really good, however, I recommend luxury vehicle owner get "Tonsiki OBD 2 Cord 16 pin M/F Male to Female Right Angle Diagnostic Extension Cable with Power Switch to avoid battery drain" for some strange reason it also triggers codes in some of the these vehicles. I have a Honda Accord and I do not have any of these problems.
Thank you for walking us through this. I am interested in adding a dash cam, especially for the parking mode. But I am put off by having to either wire this to my car battery or buying an expensive, one purpose Cellink Neo or the like.
Do you have any reason to doubt whether a Jackery or Yeti, or any other external battery popular with off-grid/campervan enthusiasts, could also do the job of running a dash cam, especially in parking mode?
You're welcome mavirek! regarding running the dashcam of an external battery, it's definitely possible and some people do run them on portable bank like this one amzn.to/3kQroBR the only issue seems to be heat inside of a car degrades the lithium batteries and you will have to replace the battery pack over time once it stops taking a charge. But if you think of it as a consumable item, then it's definitely possible. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!
That's what I wanted to know also.
Did you try what he suggested with the other. Battery he linked...or one like it?🤔
@@GoaWay... I just couldn't get comfortable putting a battery into my car because of stories about exploding batteries. So I instead got the OBD connection for my dash cam, which I highly recommend.
@@mavirek it's been no problems with it so far...no dead drained car batteries, or no problems even for the obd port itself...it still works properly if you need to plug something else into the port?
The dashcam stays working 24/7 with no issues?
You saved me I was looking for a way to mount the Garmin Dash Cam Mini without having to hardwire it
Glad to hear this helped Gregg! and thank you for watching bud!
@@AlexAutoFun You're welcome mate. I live in Europe and couldn't find the OBD power cable you reccomended, would this do the same thing? www.ebay.co.uk/itm/233771345606?hash=item366ddba6c6:g:cxIAAOSwdihfpTQf
Thanks again in advance
@@greggohlins1497 Hi Gregg! try this link amzn.to/2XFijQA it should be available, let me know it works!
@@AlexAutoFun Hi the link works but I reside in Europe so it costs a lot for shipping and taxes that's why I prefer Ebay UK thanks
@@greggohlins1497 Ahh got it, yes I took a look at the one you sent and it should work same my friend! 👍
Great review dude. When you showing the cable connect it to the OBD whats the other device with a blue oval buttom its close to your OBD
Thanks Rottie For Life appreciate that! the other device you see is an aftermarket alarm installed by the Ford dealer.
AutoFun what’s special about the extra car alarm that the dealer installed?
@@iamdenislara Hi Denis, it adds GPS tracking, it connects to an app on your phone and shows where the car is at. I just don't like that the dealer tends to overcharge for these systems when selling the car, they are much cheaper if bought and installed after the purchase of the car. But on the plus side I do get discount from my car insurance for having it. Thanks for watching Denis!
Awesome video. Thank you! I also didn't want to do a hardwire set up.
You're welcome Juan, glad to hear it helped, Cheers!
I always place the dash cam behind the rearview mirror, and most of the mirrors carry a 12volts, I simply tap to it.
Hi Hefdhi, I been hearing about that approach, I will be curious to try it and make a video for it, thanks for the tip!
@@AlexAutoFun just remember that your dash cam is 5 volts, so you have to use that converter inside the power plug that comes with your dash cam, DO NOT tap your cam straight to a 12 volts. disassemble that power plug and wire it to your mirror 12 volts. simple and clean .
Hello! Thank you so much for this video! :)
I had a question, since I’m a beginner and I’m a little confused on some things. My vehicle has a fuse for ACC and Accessory, and a separate one for the cigarette lighter.
1. If I wanted to only have it on while my car is running like you mentioned, will it go in ACC, Accessory or both?
Thanks again! Just watched the one where I can place the wire behind the airbags and that helped a lot
Hi! I think you are talking about a hardwire kit not the OBD2 adapter shown on the video. If so, yes the dash cam will only turn on when the car is on and enter parking mode (if the dash cam supports it) when the car is off. Here is my video explaining how hardwire kits work and their connections ua-cam.com/video/Yky9_tTvwMc/v-deo.html And here is my detailed hardwire kit video ua-cam.com/video/K2iKXj82354/v-deo.html if you want to see how those connections are made. Cheers!
I tried pointing at my windshield while looking out my driver’s door like in the thumbnail but my camera didn’t power on. I don’t know what I am doing wrong
OMG Haha! Obi-Kev Kenobi! (awesome screen name btw!)
really cool feature for that product! love the auto shutoff
I’ve been told that in some states you could get a ticket for that camera location.
“Blocking your view”. 🙄
You may be right Rider Mak! I heard similar and sometimes that even stuff hanging off your rear view mirror can trigger getting pulled over, definitely good idea to check your local state laws. Thanks for watching!
The best explanations video I saw so far while shopping for a dash-cam, now here is a question.. which the BEST dash-cam can do lets say 72 Parking mode, to catch a vandalism for example. I read that there are 24 hours OBD power cable.. have you updated this yet?b Thank you very much
Thanks A. JAY! regarding the dashcam here is are a couple of my favorites that support parking mode ua-cam.com/video/fQDgk2YnRhQ/v-deo.html , ua-cam.com/video/hipvzNAeypA/v-deo.html or this one ua-cam.com/video/sfVLa-PUbu0/v-deo.html You could use time lapse mode to record continuously or motion detection mode. So far I have left my car parked for about week or two and the battery was still ok and the dashcam was still running (the battery low level had not reached the voltage cut off mode). Let me know which one you end up going with!
@@AlexAutoFun Thank you very much, will look them up.. Keep the Great you do coming to us.
@@AlexAutoFunAlex, the only one I think will work is the 612T Vantop, problem is only 128G(4k are Large files) card, and no motion sensor for vandalism to record 24/7, at least 72 hours is needed.
Yes, I'm ordering the wires accessories you recommended. Mahalo.
I appreciate the video and am concerned about parking mode. Do you happen to know if the Garmin Mini 2 offers the parking mode you mention at the conclusion of your video? Or if any cameras do? I am interested in the ability to have the camera only record events if you park the car for a long time such as at an airport or train station for a week or something like that? Thank you so much for your very informative videos. They make life easier for people like me.
Hi Julia! Unfortunately I have not tested the Garmin Mini 2 so I can't confirm which features it offers, however I will see if we can add it to the list of dash cams to review (list is getting longer by the day! LOL) Regarding other dash cams, yes most will offer park monitoring, you can see the reviews for them in my channel playlist under "Dash Cam Reviews" if you like to compare them. Cheers!
