Man, I just brought out my OG Xbox last week that I modded with the team executer mod chip like 20 years ago. Still works great! Good to know about the new options!

You kids and your modchips. Back in 2005 we would just use a memory card, one of 3 games, and crossover ethernet cable to connect the PC to the Xbox and run modding software from that. Didn't need no fancy custom BIOS, we just used a slightly modified vanilla homescreen and the built in HDD for storage.

Modchips for the OG Xbox were extremely popular due to significant advantages over a softmod; there are like a hundred variants from dozens of developers, because they sold like hot cakes. "We" also didn't use a "slightly modified vanilla homescreen"; many of us used XBMC (initially called XMP; still in active development as Kodi).

Also In this age, a lot of CD drives are just dead and throwing error codes on startup. I can easily bypass that and 3D print a drive deleter. There are many benefits to mod chips over soft mods.
The faculty you have to follow and dig out all those niche projects and to disclose them in such a refined, classy way makes your channel so special. Love it.
This thing literally saved my Xbox that would not boot without a modchip (for some reason), the previous one broke (one of those cheap alladin clones) and the thing sat on a box for years Now it's going strong with cerbios and tons of games ❤
Iirc, part of an Xbox's boot code is stored on the IDE hard drive. These hard drives are paired to a motherboard with a password stored in the EEPROM. If the drive's password isn't wiped by a modchip, the hard drive can only be used by a motherboard that passes the correct password. If you don't have a mod chip or your Xbox dies, you can recover the hard drive's password with FATXplorer 3.0 beta 31 or later...if it's a Western Digital disk.

I'm having flashbacks from 20 years ago when it took me 30 minutes of trying to solder my executer mod chip to the dreaded D0 contact using a crappy $15 Radio Shack soldering iron with no flux. I got it soldered and working but the trauma remains to this day. Great memories from the early Xbox-Scene days :)
If the community can come up with a way to pair a hard drive to the system without running a burnt disc with homebrew on it (ala Project Stellar) this might be the one for me. My OG Xbox has been out of commission for over a decade because it needs a new power supply, new HDD/SDD, and at the time it needed a new DVD drive to be able to run the app to pair the drive. Apparently you can use any old PC DVD drive with a modded console minus the ability to run original disks (a feature I DON'T need) but it would be great if I didn;t have worry about burning discs at all. As it stands I;ve been procrastinating on buying project stellar because of the price but if ModXo can do the same AND is cheap because it;s running on a Pico, this is the one. Getting a HDD/SDD is dead simple and getting a power supply shouldn't be too hard. The DVD drive was the worst part of the repair because price but if I can just remove it from the equation completely, that would be great. At that point I don't really have any excuses left to procrastinate on getting this thing FINALLY fixed. Edit: 15:59 "Such as Hard Drive set up" SCOOOOOOORRRREEEEEEE! This is the one for me. Hell I already have a regular Pico, but I'll probably just grab a Tiny and a carrier board. that way I don;t have to manually add all the bitty resistors. I'm Okay at soldering but soldering tiny things like Surface Mount Resistors is NOT my forte. Either way though, I might wait for the Prometheos port to have a little more time in the oven, but this is EXACTLY what I wanted. Cheap AND can set up storage without a burnt disc.
Pro Tip - Add flux to your desoldering braid and you probably wont need to use your pump as often. That combo would have sucked all the solder out of those holes.

The Pi Pico has become such a GOAT for some many mods in the past few years. So keen to see what the future holds for PIco base Xbox mod chips, would love to be able to have a LED ring around the Xbox logo or something similar controlled by the same Pico that is running the Xbox bios

The X3 chip I installed in 2005 was the last chip I ever needed. However, I took it out to sell when a collector made an obscene offer for it. I put a Jafar in it’s place and that’s the last chip I’ll ever need. You make a strong case here though. If I ever open my console again, I’ll solder a ribbon cable to the pin header and D0 and run it through a vent, and double-sided tape whatever modchip to the top of the case :D
Your soldering music sounds like what you'd hear in a 1980s Garfield TV show 😂 This looks really promising. Once I get around to "re"-modding my OG Xbox, I had planned on a Project Stellar for the HDMI and hopeful future capability of native wireless controller support, but this is one I'll be keeping an eye out for too now.
Both my XBoxes are already modchipped, but it's nice to see alternative with open source projects that can be perpetuated by someone else even if the original creator abandons the project.
The OG XBOX modchip scene has been stagnant for many years, primarily due to how easy it is to softmod the console. Now, with other mods being developed that require a hardmod (like Cerbios), demand for something other than the old Aladdin clones has picked up. Thanks to the community!
As an electronic engineer I did not want to spend my money on mod chips that where hard to use. This to me sounds amazing and already having a background working with Pis and microcontrollers I am really excited in what you could do with the extra I/O. When this gets stable I might want to take a dive into this one.
The Xbox modding scene continues to amaze me even this far removed from the Xbox's launch. Using a Pico as a modchip is very clever. I wonder if that method can be used on PS3s and 360s as well, with a different implementation and the specific software for those systems of course.
While I have never owned the 2001 version of Xbox (Original Xbox), It's nice to see this console get a modchip that could be the "Be All, End All" for using the hardware on this console to its fullest potential...But of course, years down the road another one will improve over the old one so.

As someone who has 2 xboxs that need full replacements of the Hard Drive, and since its apparently just easier to mod in a sata hdd/ssd, this felt like a message from above. The pico being cheaper than older mod chips really calls to me.

Im so happy we're in the generation where new technology is helping old technology keeping up ... we have psp on ras and now xbox on ras nintendo Switch on ras. This raspberry is such a life saver for these old technologies !!!
This is awesome, especially if it allows for a relatively uncomplicated harddrive swap. Even the newer harddrives in the old Xbox are comming up on their 20th birthday, their lifecycles are definitely nearing the end. And with the harddrive gone, you need a cheap, relatively uncomplicated method to put in a new one, and Chinese pico clones are less than $5 each.

Man, this is so much easier than my mod chip from the first year that the console was released. It had something like 35 wires to solder in. I was working at a computer show and found a guy that said he would mod it for me overnight so I ran to Best buy and bought one.
RP2040 has became popular not only because it is widely available and cheap, but also that it uses PIO that has 8 state machine to emulate many real-time protocols
Can't wait until we have the ultimate PS2 with all these mods. I see Stone Age Gamer has new HDMI kits for PS2. If those turn out to be good, then all we need now is an SD card reader and we'll be able to play every PS1-PS2 game on our modern tvs with no lag/quality resolution. Even though PS2 is my favorite console of that generation, there is no easy way to get decent resolution out of it, nowhere near the quality of the OG XBOX and Gamecube progressive scan
I'm looking forward to seeing LCD/OLED screen support for those that don't want to find rare and costly Xecuter chips and screens. The only con I see with the Pi Pico is future updates requiring reconnecting the chip via USB.
Would love to see this mod chip make chihiro conversions easier. Being able to switch between home console and arcade functionality would be absolutely huge
I already have everything needed. I also like that this does not use any Windows specific software. Considering I used to install modchips into the Wii and Xbox 360 without any kind magnification I think this is very beginner friendly.
Bought a wireless transmitter for n64 controller from Retro Fi and it's using a raspi nano. Two of my hitboxes are also using a 2040. Really impressive what raspi did. It's cheap and available. Amazing hw. ☮️
I currently have my og xbox, that I bought in 2003 running xecuter 2.3b lite + 2Tb + Noctua fan... Also I have 5 other og xbox's ready for modding. Now a days the way to go was Xenuim, but those cost at least 45€ per piece here, so I just ordered couple of those Rasperry Picos for 5€ a piece to test this mod. I think this ModXo is going to be a gamechanger for xbox modding.
something not many people seem to do is solder the d0 motherboard wire to the chassis of the console (instead of console to chip) - it will do the same thing and not need to be removed if you remove the chip for maintenance or any other reason. d0 just tells the console to boot form the LPC header when grounded.
Hmm? If you remove the chip with D0 permanently grounded, your console won't boot. Wiring to the chip is fine, and allows the chip to control D0 so you can boot from the TSOP if needed.
@@GoTeamScotch yea, but it's easier to resolder/desolder the d0 to the case than the chip. Just a trick I use. Of course you have to disconnect d0 from ground if you want to boot from the tsop

You can’t flash Prometheos to a TSOP either. You’re then limited to only one bios, which is fine for a lot of ppl.
1.0 and 1.1 models have 1Mb bios chips that can have their banks split. @@Dikwili

I'm looking forward to seeing LCD/OLED screen support for those that don't want to find rare and costly Xecuter chips and screens. The only con I see with the Pi Pico is future updates requiring reconnecting the chip via USB.
Would love to see this mod chip make chihiro conversions easier. Being able to switch between home console and arcade functionality would be absolutely huge

I already have everything needed. I also like that this does not use any Windows specific software. Considering I used to install modchips into the Wii and Xbox 360 without any kind magnification I think this is very beginner friendly.

Bought a wireless transmitter for n64 controller from Retro Fi and it's using a raspi nano. Two of my hitboxes are also using a 2040. Really impressive what raspi did. It's cheap and available. Amazing hw. ☮️
Thats pretty sick. A long time a go we did the hot swap mod on our xbox.
I currently have my og xbox, that I bought in 2003 running xecuter 2.3b lite + 2Tb + Noctua fan... Also I have 5 other og xbox's ready for modding. Now a days the way to go was Xenuim, but those cost at least 45€ per piece here, so I just ordered couple of those Rasperry Picos for 5€ a piece to test this mod. I think this ModXo is going to be a gamechanger for xbox modding.

something not many people seem to do is solder the d0 motherboard wire to the chassis of the console (instead of console to chip) - it will do the same thing and not need to be removed if you remove the chip for maintenance or any other reason. d0 just tells the console to boot form the LPC header when grounded.
Hmm? If you remove the chip with D0 permanently grounded, your console won't boot. Wiring to the chip is fine, and allows the chip to control D0 so you can boot from the TSOP if needed.
@@GoTeamScotch yea, but it's easier to resolder/desolder the d0 to the case than the chip. Just a trick I use. Of course you have to disconnect d0 from ground if you want to boot from the tsop
Man, I'm eager to see PromOS running on the Modxo. More so if there's a way to chain-flash uf2s to run Cerbios along PromOS.
Sounds like that's the plan with PromOS. Using it to boot into other BIOSes, including Cerb.

I was with shalx trying to put together the xenium but it didn't go well I guess it was my fault but something better came out on his part
