    I got my hands and a Yamazaki 12 and hakushu 12 yesterday. I feel I'm abit to new into wiskey to fully appreciate them. I find myself not immediately recognizing the pallet untill I flip the box and follow the aroma and pallet stated on them and then I find myself distinguishing everything on there and it is freaking awesome. Great videos, awesome reviews!

    That robe is class! Needs a hat and possibly a staff made from charred oak, infused with smoked peat.
    Rex can have a smaller staff (wand).

    I have a confession. I'm retired and I drink whisky every morning after drinking a glass of water. It is the quiet time of day when I can truly enjoy the juice in solitude. But never accuse me of 'problem drinking.' I always stop before bedtime.

    My family has a history of alcholism, and I have a deep fascination with whiskey and liqours of various types (Rum, Bourbon, Scotch). Because of my family history I limit myself to 1 or 2 drinks a week of any kind. If I've had a beer or so in a week I won't have a glass of Rum until that week is over and the next begins. Sorry to share so much, just wanted to I guess.

    Just picked up a bottle of this Tuesday and just opened it about 4 min ago. The first initial tasting there was something to it that I didn't like dunno what it was just something hit me odd. Second go it was there but way less. Third sip whatever it was its gone and its just beautiful and on the fourth apparently I am now drunk because I managed to miss my mouth.

    As a bar manager at fairly high end restaurant, I can give a little insight on allocation. Highly allocated bottles (ie. blantons, bookers, Weller 12, Stagg etc.) are released to the purchaser based on the sales of the rest of the portfolio. For instance, if you sell through a case a day of buffalo trace you are much more likely to get in a case of blantons. It’s also one of the reasons Costco gets those allocations and can sell them at a decent price. The rep will tell you “ we don’t have any in stock” what they really mean is “my boss won’t release the bottle because you don’t buy enough of the BT portfolio.” Hope that helps

    So far i have finished a few nice bottles, weird that i started on the Lagavulin and loved it. Currently enjoying a Bowmore 15 and a Green label (soooo nice). I think i'll be getting a Clynelish 14 tomorrow... or an Oban 14, not sure yet.
    Also, the Aberlour 12 is such a great drop and it's affordable.
    Keep it up!

    Congrats on hitting the 100 mark! Request time: Russel's Reserve single barrel bourbon and/or rye. I actually mooched, or rather was forced to drink, the bourbon while sitting in a bar killing time when I ran into a sales rep for the brand. The bourbon was the first I'd had that was pretty complex/awesome for a bourbon. The rye I found later and thought it was a bit of a let down.

      Good choice! I'm a bourbon guy myself. My parents lived in Lexington, KY for a few years and I traveled the whiskey trail numerous times. I'll suggest a few more if you're trying to get into it more, maybe they'll even review a few. Four Roses Single Barrel, Woodford Reserve (they use pot stills!), Booker's, Eagle Rare, Blanton's, Col. E H Taylor, W.L. Weller. Any of those are well worth your time and money. There are many more!

  • @JasonFisk

    I bought this on Saturday after convincing myself that I NEEDED it. I have to mention here that I buy my whisky from the Whisky Exchange in the City (London), and I had been there after work on Friday when I bought Lagavulin 8 and 16 and a Dalmore Cigar Malt.
    As the Yamazaki is my first taste of Japanese whisky I have to say that I really enjoyed it. It's easily one of those Whiskies that I could sit back and drink half a bottle of before realising that it's bloody expensive and that I probably shouldn't drink half of it in a few hours...
    If I had to pick out one negative with the Yamazaki 12, and I don't know whether it's a constant with all Japanese Whiskies, but the plastic screw cap... It's the only single malt i have without a cork. I love the cork, the cork is special, it adds something to the experience. A plastic screw cap doesn't. But, I digress.
    I know, I know, it's just a cap, the important stuff is in the bottle.

    • @WhiskeyVault

Did you have any idea you were drinking $800 whiskey? Is it seriously not much better than the $50?

      It's not quite the same, but Glenlivet 18 reminds me of this style. It's also bottled at the same strength of 43%. Another one is Clynelish 14. Both of these are easily available and cheaper than the Yamazaki 12 and many would say they are better. I'm a big fan of the Yamazaki but it is really overpriced even if you can find a bottle.

    Wow.. Yamazaki 12 used to cost $40-45 just 4-5 years ago in California.. bought two or three bottles around that time and forgot about it.. but checking prices today and it's selling for more than double at $90 now. It's good whiskey but tbh, I'm a bit peeved the hype really killed one of my favorites. What's even odder is that it's more expensive than Hibiki, and Hibiki then used to be the same price but only 500ml instead of the 750ml you see now. Thankfully Hibiki hasn't blown up as much as Yamazaki has, and in fact is much bit cheaper from the extra mls. But it's still frustrating to see good booze become vastly overpriced from hype.. no way you to know if you're really getting your money's value when things are priced that way.

    So I been noticing that's there's screw on caps and corks is there a reason for why a distillery uses either or, and is there a change to the whisky depending on what's sealing it?

    • @WhiskeyVault
      @WhiskeyVault  7 років тому

      No, it's purely asthetic and business decisions involving cost. The only weakness of cork, is that whisky eats the cork if it's in the bottle too long. I prefer the cork, but it's mostly for nostalgic reasoning.

    • @NikudemusProductions
      @NikudemusProductions 7 років тому

      slather vasquez cork is the only way to age whiskey. Screw tops are fine for capturing the taste of a whiskey at that time such as for cheaper spirits or drams but are not meant for storing of any lengthy amount of time

    • @skiddv
      @skiddv 7 років тому

      Russell NKD so in other words if I'm going buy a whisky that's only going last me about a month a screw on is more likely to be on the bottle rather then one that's going to be on shelf that I'm saving or only drink bits at a time.

    • @NikudemusProductions
      @NikudemusProductions 7 років тому +1

      slather vasquez if you plan on keeping whiskey a long time then yes right side up with the cork let's in just a tiny bit of air that keeps the whiskey alive & rounds the flavor, if you're into that. For screw top storing long periods of time will lead to a dead spirit. Idk if that makes sense when i say dead and alive while talking about whisk(e)y but this is what I believe & seems to be the case. But then again people usually don't store whiskey for long periods of time except for distillers unlike wine so cork or screw top will make no difference.

      It was actually less copying and more of a tribute. small difference but important. Masataka trained in Scotland before working with Shinjiro to start Yamazaki. The first whisky they made was Scottish style, including shipping peat from Scotland. But Shinjiro decided that the result was too aggressive for the Japanese palate. After about 10 yrs, Masataka left Yamazaki and headed north to start his own distillery. That became Nikka.

      Luckily they ship more in regularly. Honestly though North Dakota only has the second highest alcohol consumption per capita. It is not like we are those drunks from Wisconsin.

      Andrew O'Neil I just found a place in Fresno Cali that sells them for 150 each but if you spend good money there they’ll do them for 135 before tax, I’ve been to liquor stores that try to act like they’re giving you a deal at 250

    I work as a hand at a liquor store in north Texas. They pay me well and I am blessed to have my job. I've tried Buffalo Trace along with Blanton's and Eagle Rare at a specific customer's house.
    Smoke Wagon trumps them both.
    And you noticed I said both because Buffalo Trace tastes like shit.

    Yamazaki 18 - Daniel "it's too smooth, almost cough syrup smooth"... Personally, I find Yamazaki 18 to be slightly earthier on the nose with a little less cherry on the finish than the Robotussin DM with no age statement. But then again, tasting is subjective

    It's amazing the immensely popular and expensive Yamazaki 18 disappoints so much. I haven't tried that one but I've experienced something similar with other 18 year olds, such as the Macallan, the Glenlivet and even the Elijah Craig. For each of those I like the 12 better or at least the same so I think a lot of 18 year olds are really overpriced and overrated. Highland Park would be the exception as that one is my absolute favorite.
