An episode of The Whisk(e)y Vault hosted at Whisky Marketing School in Austin, TX. Today we talk about Suntory Whisky Toki from the Suntory distillery.
Having a glass of the Toki as I watch this and was trying to figure out what citrus fruit I was tasting, then he said green apple and my brain exploded because that is so completely right!!
I love these earlier editions where the emphasis was on tasting and describing the whiskey. Totally enjoy your knowledge and camaraderie. Thanks for making these videos
So, not that many people will see this. I’m more of a bourbon drinker so far (subject to change), with angles envy being my favorite so far. I recently bought a bottle of Glenfiddich 12 upon recommendations of these two for an intro to scotch. The first few pours were neat and the deeper I got into the bottle the more it tasted like drinking an ashtray, perhaps because I’m a smoke newb, of course ice made it enjoyable. So I decided to try another route, JAPANESE WHISKEY, and I picked Suntory Toki. I was able to pick up a slight smoke taste without the taste of drinking an ashtray! Thank guys for the great vids keep them coming! Team Biscuit out.
magoonicus try a couple drops of water instead of water. I just recently tried Angel's Envy. It is a beauty. Now a good Scotch but a bit pricey, Walker Platinum Label. Was given to me by my boss for Christmas and wow it is pretty damn good.
Yamazaki is my favorite whisky, but the 12yo now costs $399 in Aus! (used to be les than $100). Had the Hibiki a couple of weeks ago and it was also amazing.
Myself and a friend first had this whisky about 6 months ago. He loves all things Japanese and both of us are whisky fans. From the first glass we loved it. Amongst other drinking we woke up the next day and discovered the empty bottle. Yesterday I bought myself a bottle of the stuff. Yet to be opened.
For Rex: A load of mini scotch bottles (those flight sized/mini bar ones) you've mooched on a string. Bonus points if the string is made out of a ripped up tube sock. Loving these non-traditional country whisky reviews. Could you try an Indian whisky next? India seems to be the largest consumer of whisky in the world.
I'd also love to know if there is a great whisky from India. I'd also be interested to know of any strange European whiskies. Are there Italian whiskies? Croatian? Norwegian?
Enjoyed many Toki highballs as I edited my latest video about Japanese whisky. Couldn't have done it without the information I got researching by watching these magnificent bastards!
Let's test the bottle shape's influence on taste... mooch level 100. I'm in Whisky kindergarten and I enjoy this, Suntory Toki (reasonable price, available, and tasty), and Kovol Oat. Thanks for getting me back into drinking!
Tonight I tried a bit of Toki and I thought the after taste was almost like honey. But I can see the green grapes as well. I really like it. I was suprised I've had it once before a few years ago and I was like...its okay and now tonight I'm like...OOH I like this. Maybe my palette has improved maybe being a blended whisky this is just a better blend than I had at the time. But I enjoyed it this evening for sure.
My only issue with the comparison between Toki and Harmony made here (and you're not wrong, you're dead on) is the fact that Harmony is literally double the price of Toki (at least here in sunny England - £30 to £60).
Hi guys, I just managed to get my hands on some Suntory Toki. I live in the middle of nowhere Arkansas so it was kind of hard to find, but it was worth it! Thanks for the recommendation!
I just tried Toki for the first time. I definitely agree it's similar to Irish whiskey. I didn't find the green grapes though, I did find fruit though. It reminded me of banana candy.
After having my first glass of Toki, last night, I had to come back and watch this to see how my nosing/tasting compared with yours. I got a sense of a honeyed Irish with some strong alcohol overtones. The honey would change from a mild clover honey to the waxy honeycomb flavor. Glad to see that I was pretty close to your notes.
I definitely agree to the lightness of the Toki and with the side by side comparison to the Harmony I will need to track down some. Right now it just doesn't exist in VA for whatever reason. Also Rex should go grand master plebeian mooch and get a couple custom shirts with a medallion superimposed on them and maybe on the back like how you have the STAFF jackets and such it just says MOOCH.
Correction I found what appears to be the "last bottle" of Hibiki Harmony in the area by just walking into the store that was next to chipotle when I got lunch.
I buy a bottle of alcohol about every 3 years and it takes me that long to finish it. I got the toki whisky and i was wondering what people said about it. I like it and it seems like you guys enjoy it and others in it's family too. I'm happy to be drinking this one for a long time hehe.
They dont sell Toki in Asia. Recently came back to the US and had to try it. Very good for $25. Better than the regular suntory kakubin for drinking neat
I'd have recommended the Glenfiddich IPA Experiment. A hoppy, sweet whisky with a slightly bitter aftertaste, just like an IPA. Perfect for a beer lover to dip their foot into and see if they like whisky, with a beer twist!
This whiskey should be drank on the rocks or if you like neat add a little water. I know, I know sounds weird but if you drink straight I’ll taste like straight ethanol. I almost gave up on it when I drank it straight but decided to add ice and it elevated the taste.
7:14 yes *YES!!!* trying to change anyone’s mind (about anything!!) against their will is nothing more than an exercise in futility....and utterly impossible! P.S. I am on a *MISSION* to find some damn Hibiki Harmony....even have my friend who manages the local Total Wine watching shipments for me!! 🙏🙏🙏🥃
yes! Jared, one of their master distillers, has been out here with us to hang out with the Whisky students. He brought along with him 6 unreleased bottlings of their single malt. Amazing stuff.
Lucky yall! I've seen some of their stuff at the local liquor store, but have not had the chance to purchase any though... Will have to make sure to pick some up next time I am there.
In Vancouver the toky sells for $54 and the harmony sells for $119... is it worth buying the harmony at double the price? I have a bottle of Toky and really enjoyed it. Love to hear your opinion!
The Toki has actually become a "go to" whisk(e)y for me. It has a very light smokey flavor that gets my palate warmed up for the stronger flavors in the islays.
Far more alcohol ;-) Not as smooth. Although, if you watered it down to sake level alcohol, maybe! I think Toki is 43% and sake is usually around 20%. So for one ounce of Toki, you'd add 1.15 oz of water to get it where you need it.
I have a question for both Daniel and Rex, hopefully you haven't answered it as I'm not caught up on all the videos yet, but if you each had to choose only 1 whiskey to drink for the rest of your lives what would it be?
I bought a bottle and kinda like it, but it isn't something I'd buy again for myself. When I chilled it with a couple of whisky stones, it smelled and tasted like a really high alcohol content version of the white wine my mother used to buy in gallon bottles.🤣
Idea for a mooch medallion: drill through the stump of a glencairn glass and put it on a chain. that way your mooching implement is always on your person. wipe with beard in lieu of rinsing :)
Wow! What I'm about to say may sound crazy but this whisky is phenomenal chilled. On the taste specifically. It really brings out the honey and oddly I'm getting a candied walnut flavor too. The nose is pretty oaky, with a sharpness ...maybe the tannins coming through. Also on the nose is what I interpret as vanilla. Anyways just thought that was interesting and wanted to share. You guys are awesome and I always love the content. Thanks for all that you do.
have you had the Hakushu 12?right now that japanese whisky is hard to track down I'm debating rather I should buy the hakushu or the hibiki harmony...note that I'm barely getting into whiskeys and scotches so any recommendations or info would be great!!thanks
Yes, and it's awesome. The Harmony is a bit better IMO. But it's hard to get a bad Japanese whisky if you're choosing from the two main distillers, Yamazaki and Nikka
what are some must try bottles for a beginner in the whisky and scotches world in your opinion?it doesn't matter the origin or if it's blended or single...
Hey guys how about trying the hard to find Bunnahabhain Cruach-Mhona (not the green bottle but the darkish charcoal with grey label)??? I love Yamazaki 18, Nikka 21 but this to me is on par or may be even better than those two.
Hey guys, I live in North Carolina and cannot purchase alcohol online.. How do I find any of these whiskeys? my options so far that I have found are fairly limited to big J names. (Jim, Jack, Johnny, and jameson)

Just bought a bottle if Suntory , first two glasses left a lingering flavor not real impressed. I'm used to Scotch or irish and wanted to try Japanese. Will advise after I've had more. Think I paid too much for it though $53

Is there an aggressive japanese whiskey? I know from living there that the companies word is law and if they are after “nuance” then they would keep a lid on the rebels, but have you heard of any rebels?
Posted for three years and only one hundred thirty-four comments? Belly up to the screen ye sotted knaves, and bring your key boards. I don’t like Irish whiskey in general, but first taste of this my reaction was “ha, an Irish whiskey I could drink”. Gonna have a wee dram more
Finally 2 regular dudes that know whisk(e)y NOT trying to be sophisticated. Nice review, you got a new subscriber.
Agreed, awesome channel. Appreciate the honesty
Hell yeah they are the best relateable whiskey channel
Having a glass of the Toki as I watch this and was trying to figure out what citrus fruit I was tasting, then he said green apple and my brain exploded because that is so completely right!!
I tasted dried yet creamy coconut in a white wine
The Toki is my favorite whiskey to start a tasting with. It's just so friendly and inviting. It prepares the palate for what's to come.
I love these earlier editions where the emphasis was on tasting and describing the whiskey. Totally enjoy your knowledge and camaraderie. Thanks for making these videos
Watching old videos is like going back to my childhood and remembering the fun that led to so many good things. The mooch necklace begins
you won't have enough of it! Never was a whisky drinker until I tried Suntory Toki. Highly recommend it
Have you had the Hakushu?
Hah! The “right answer” is perfect! Like the Toki, it’s light and airy and I love the honeysuckle and lemon taste - fun forty dollar whisky
1222Tonia I just got some today! Can’t wait to try it tonight :)

4:32 "nooooo, I don't like fighting over whiskey"
Daniel you are my spirit animal, and I hope I can give off such wholesome vibes as you one day~
Dude on the left is like a happy drunk version of James Yeager
anonymous person or a Björn Strid from Soilwork.
Edit: yes he does look similar to Yeager
Hahahaha yes!
Just got this today, and I love it. Granted I'm still at the on the rocks stage of whiskey drinking, but this is just so easy to drink
Lagavulin 16 got me passed the rocks stage.
Yamazaki is my favorite whisky, but the 12yo now costs $399 in Aus! (used to be les than $100). Had the Hibiki a couple of weeks ago and it was also amazing.
After the way Rex mooched all those drinks, im wondering if Daniel made him mop the toilets or scrub the floor with a tooth brush... 😂🤣

A tube sock! of course.
Indian whiskey! We have two in the vault. We'll add one in soon.
Enjoyed many Toki highballs as I edited my latest video about Japanese whisky. Couldn't have done it without the information I got researching by watching these magnificent bastards!
My mouth is watering watching this.
Grapes makes sense. Black people in the hip hop industry love Hennessy and Suntory Toki reminded me immediately about Henny.
Let's test the bottle shape's influence on taste... mooch level 100.
I'm in Whisky kindergarten and I enjoy this, Suntory Toki (reasonable price, available, and tasty), and Kovol Oat.

Please do the Yamazaki too :D
i also would like some notes on Yamazaki as well :)
Just had my first Japanese whisky and it is Suntory Toki. Very nice^^
If I drank whisky daily Toki would be it.
I'm finding myself wanting to try the harmony just because of the beautiful bottle
Toki is great with soda water, on a hot Texas day
So happy you mentioned the grapes because I literally googled "suntory whisky toki reminds me of white wine" Cheers!
Hi guys, I just managed to get my hands on some Suntory Toki. I live in the middle of nowhere Arkansas so it was kind of hard to find, but it was worth it! Thanks for the recommendation!

Banana candy is a great shout.
Really like the toki. It's a good "casual" drinker imo. Sorta tastes flowery almost
The Japanese Whisky game is absolutely on point. Toki is very good but my favourite is the Yamazaki.
Is it bad that this is my favorite whisky for someone new to paying attention to the actual taste of whisk(e)y?
After having my first glass of Toki, last night, I had to come back and watch this to see how my nosing/tasting compared with yours. I got a sense of a honeyed Irish with some strong alcohol overtones. The honey would change from a mild clover honey to the waxy honeycomb flavor. Glad to see that I was pretty close to your notes.
This stuff has a super krunk buzz very energetic. That's what I care about. Taste is much less important to me 😂 excellent buzz highly recommend 👍
The harmony costs like twice what the toki costs near me, i guess that's why
I preferred the Toki of the two.
How can we send a gift of whiskey to be reviewed?
I’d love to see a review on The Balvenie 14 Caribbean cask or any of their lineup.
I definitely agree to the lightness of the Toki and with the side by side comparison to the Harmony I will need to track down some. Right now it just doesn't exist in VA for whatever reason.

That Harmony is damn good. Drinking it as I type this 😂
Actually just opened up a bottle of the Toki, then wanted to know what you guys thought of it. Good video. Cheers 🥃 #2yearslater
I buy a bottle of alcohol about every 3 years and it takes me that long to finish it. I got the toki whisky and i was wondering what people said about it. I like it and it seems like you guys enjoy it and others in it's family too. I'm happy to be drinking this one for a long time hehe.
Came for the take on Toki. Stayed for the talk on in-law diplomacy.
They dont sell Toki in Asia. Recently came back to the US and had to try it. Very good for $25. Better than the regular suntory kakubin for drinking neat
Bought this about a week ago, not to bad I liked it's floral notes then the slight burn.
I'm very much amateur with tasting, but this reminds me of Johnnie Walker. It's been a few years, I'll have to pick up a bottle and compare
Revisiting this episode well looking to buy this as it is now available in my small town in the middle.of the Mojave.
I just figured out that Toki means time in Japanese. And Rex should remember that Bill Murray would like him to make it Suntory Time haha. Cheers
Hey! Rex's necklace should be made of tube socks and have a whiskey glass on the end! Oh wait...
Furthermore... it is a beautiful bottle ❤️
I'd have recommended the Glenfiddich IPA Experiment. A hoppy, sweet whisky with a slightly bitter aftertaste, just like an IPA. Perfect for a beer lover to dip their foot into and see if they like whisky, with a beer twist!

I am sure that shirt would have looked presentable to shop in walmart during the day in first few days it was worn.
A friend of mine got it like nothing in the local taxfree. We really liked it
Just picked up a bottle from my local Total Wine, love it!!!!
The restaurant I work at also owns a liquor store down the street. I get 20% off. This cost me 30$ CAD. I love it for how cheap it was
That is awesome! You are 20% mooch.
Love the toki
I like the Toki more. Very reminiscent of Hakushu. Like a much liter Hakushu
Hahahaha!!!! He is a sneaking thief, very fast and quiet!!! A Ninja thief
Have yall tried any of the Balcones whiskey yet? Possibly do a review of their blue corn whiskey?
1:12 seconds into the video....aaaaannnndd SUBSCRIBED !!
In Vancouver the toky sells for $54 and the harmony sells for $119... is it worth buying the harmony at double the price? I have a bottle of Toky and really enjoyed it. Love to hear your opinion!
What happened to the mooch necklace ?! What have I missed?
Ive really looked hard at the Whiskey Vault school. would LOVE to attend. Sadly, I can ski a week for a two day level I class. maybe some day...
Which one you loved ?
What is your number 1 favourite whisky or your "go to" whisky that you have in the vault, and can you do a video on said one.
Depends on the day. Usually an Islay
The Toki has actually become a "go to" whisk(e)y for me. It has a very light smokey flavor that gets my palate warmed up for the stronger flavors in the islays.
Looking back at the tasting notes on this one, I just got pear. And it was really obviously pear flavor.
I am having TOKI as we speak... I don't feel the apples, I don't feel the grapes... My palette is so bad :D
Had this on my recent trip to the US. I did like it. I got an interesting ginger flavour from it but maybe that's just how my taste buds read it.
I like Japanese whisky but I enjoy more a glass of sake. My question is how does the whiskey you had in the video compare to sake ?
Far more alcohol ;-) Not as smooth. Although, if you watered it down to sake level alcohol, maybe! I think Toki is 43% and sake is usually around 20%. So for one ounce of Toki, you'd add 1.15 oz of water to get it where you need it.
Wow that was fast :) also thanks and nice video!
Thank you for the 9 minute video where you didn't really review the Suntory whiskey at all!
What was the Japanese whiskey you didn't prefer????
Nikka Coffey Malt
Whiskey Vault that just sounds all sorts of wrong for a whiskey
@@kevinhamutov8778 Nikka Coffey is the name of the person, nothing to do with the taste. Pewdiepie explains it a bit in his japanese whisky video :D
I have a question for both Daniel and Rex, hopefully you haven't answered it as I'm not caught up on all the videos yet, but if you each had to choose only 1 whiskey to drink for the rest of your lives what would it be?
That sounds like a truly terrifying proposition. I can't even consider it.
I bought a bottle and kinda like it, but it isn't something I'd buy again for myself.
When I chilled it with a couple of whisky stones, it smelled and tasted like a really high alcohol content version of the white wine my mother used to buy in gallon bottles.🤣
What do you think is the best whiskey in the $50 and below range?
Going to pick up the Toki variety after nearly finishing the bottle of the Hitori Japanese Harmony. The Toki is haaaaalf the price.. .so we'll see.
I know I'm a bit late but, have you tried Suntorys The Chita
which japanese whisky is the one you don't prefer Dan ?
Hey Daniel, how many different whiskeys do you have in the vault??
Currently between 550 and 580 depending on what I include in the list.
@@WhiskeyVault now it's over 1700. Fuck I want more whisky.
You probably shouldn't say that there's nothing below the shirt.
Wow rex looks so young...
Daniel still looking the same lol ❤
It's worth noting that another difference between Harmony and Toki is about 60 bucks.
I'm going out on a limb here, but the toki had a feint hint of tequila to me.
Great
Idea for a mooch medallion: drill through the stump of a glencairn glass and put it on a chain. that way your mooching implement is always on your person. wipe with beard in lieu of rinsing :)
Thanks for all that you do.
have you had the Hakushu 12?right now that japanese whisky is hard to track down I'm debating rather I should buy the hakushu or the hibiki harmony...note that I'm barely getting into whiskeys and scotches so any recommendations or info would be great!!thanks

cool sounds good thanks for the reply!

and if you can name one with some big sweet notes would be great thanks! cheers
ever tried Mars Iwai? tempted to buy but um'ing and ahh'ing
Haven't, but I'll track some down!
@@WhiskeyVault Flavorless sugar water, in my opinion.
How do you request whisky they drink
On the extreme back end, the flavor that tells me that I need to take another sip, I get Cherry Cold-eez on Toki
It's that lingering numbness/burn in the back of your throat. Almost like that cough spray. I think I'm going through the same feeling right now :)
Hey guys how about trying the hard to find Bunnahabhain Cruach-Mhona (not the green bottle but the darkish charcoal with grey label)???
I love Yamazaki 18, Nikka 21 but this to me is on par or may be even better than those two.
I need to find that!
Hey guys, I live in North Carolina and cannot purchase alcohol online.. How do I find any of these whiskeys? my options so far that I have found are fairly limited to big J names. (Jim, Jack, Johnny, and jameson)
Yeah, it may require a trip to a larger city to find a liquor store with a better whiskey selection. TX has the same alcohol shipping restrictions.
I live in the biggest city in the state haha ( Charlotte) I guess I just need to look harder.
Well damn, man! you guys have Total Wine, which normally has a kickass selection. And Charlotte is freaking awesome. Damn fine city.
They are phenomenal for Wine and beer, but all liquor is confined to "ABC" Stores.
Here is all you need. It's all the Scotches sold in your county, and when you click "view location" next to a scotch, it will tell you exactly what stores in the area carry it, AND how many bottles are in stock. Now, go drink and be merry.

Toki was way more salty than malty. I do get the apple, honey almost nonexistent. Never had the harmony can't wait to try it some day.
😂😂😂 BEER
Is there an aggressive japanese whiskey? I know from living there that the companies word is law and if they are after “nuance” then they would keep a lid on the rebels, but have you heard of any rebels?
I think they said Yamazaki is more aggressive
you should try Kavalan from Taiwan.
We've done a few. Here's one: ua-cam.com/video/iC2LKzve_aE/v-deo.html
toki is 60$ here while hibiki is 110$ if it worth almost double?
Not in my opinion but I’m very particular.
Rex has aged 20 years in the last 3
I want a whiskey vault.

I think this is a really good whiskey for its price point.
