Alec Laird was born in his granny's bed at Liddel Farm, The Orkney Islands on the 17th of June 1942.
After a brief stint working on a harbour tug, he joined the Royal Navy at the age of 16. He still works at sea on board an ERRV (Emergency Response & Rescue Vessel) in the North Sea..........This is his story in his own words.....

It Takes longer getting saturation divers back from a dive, than it does to get astronauts back from the moon
Interesting point.

My dad was a deep sea diver on a mine sweeper,HMS Diver,I never found out he was on a mine sweeper until he passed away 4 years ago,if I ever asked him about his job in the navy he used to say he was an engineer,I only found out he was also a deep sea diver when I was watching a film with him and in the film was a diver,he suddenly said 'I used to love doing that' ,after he died I enquired about his ship, found a few of his old shipmates and mum gave me his badge with a divers helmet on it, I wish I knew more, I wish he would of shared a few stories with me,it must of been fascinating work.☺🇬🇧
I’m sure your father had his reasons for not talking. They has to deal with some horrific sights.
What was the name of the film your father was in?
Fantastic I’ve shared it on my Facebook account the views are rocketing. Total respect ✊
Who knows, even you may hear some stories that you have not heard before 😂

The history is something we all need to hold onto, just this short clip is an eye opener for sure. Danger at sea comes in so many forms and the general public have very little understanding of this. It would be so interesting to hear how he has seen it all changeover the years the good and the bad.
It’s quite a story to try and put together. I’m working on it as we speak 😊

Quite a life.
Lemmy @ 29 seconds 😎. My mate's uncle was a navy diver and also was on #13 midget sub that went after the Scharnhorst.
Difficult to imagine.
