- Alec Laird was born in his granny's bed at Liddel Farm, The Orkney Islands on the 17th of June 1942.
After a brief stint working on a harbour tug, he joined the Royal Navy at the age of 16. He still works at sea on board an ERRV (Emergency Response & Rescue Vessel) in the North Sea..........This is his story in his own words.....

Great to see Part 3. Fascinating 👍👍
Thank’s for watching. Hope to have part 4 posted this leave.
I's GREAT to see you back again🎉😁...What a fantastic career Alec has had...quite a varied work load, and quite a heavy one at times...must have many, many tales to tell
So what has changed that you can post the videos again...I do hope it's permanent.😁
I can only film inside so not worth doing my usual stuff ☹️
Wow, all 3 parts are amazing. Not many folks on this earth have experienced diving the way he had. Incredible nerves in a unforgiving environment. Such a different world in the sea.
Thanks for the documentary of this man.
You’re welcome. There’ll be more to come
What an interesting bit if kit an even more interesting Fella..Thanks for all you've done to advance this job safety
And some interesting stories.
thank you for sharing your story - please stay safe and well - sending you all the blessings of the season ♥️😀xx
Thank you very much
Nice to see you back Chief hope all is well. I was in Aberdeen over the weekend on HMS Archer with the RNR and saw one a few of your fleet.
Dare I ask what HMS Archer is up to working out of Aberdeen? 😬
@@Bigwavemaster1 nothing exciting, mainly PR exercise in Stonehaven taking out sea cadets and ship visit open to the punlic
@@malcolm9650 Sounds like fun. I used to be in the sea scouts at Portsmouth. We also got to do such things.
Mind you, back then, anyone could just walk into Portsmouth Dockyard and ask to be shown round a RN ship.
Great to see you back again, happy new year to you all ❤
Thanks, Lynne.
Happy new year to you also
Very Educational, Wish I were 50 years younger, sounds like a job for a young and strong guy
Alex dived for about 40 years.
What an amazing life you’ve had on (and in) the sea! Great story! This has been such an amazing channel giving us land-lubbers a great glimpse into life onboard a ship of this kind in the wickedest, wildest seas in the world . Who will run your channel now if you’re retired? And just one more question: do you guys ever actually do any fishing (for food) when the sea is relatively calm or is this activity against company policy?
I haven’t retired just yet. The company don’t want me filming any more ☹️
And you had commented that the North Atlantic is so vast that you have plenty of leeway and you're only dealing with wind not current do you remember?
Indeed
Remember sir," dish Chris"I was then asking about tacking in currents
Yep.
Very good 👍 love you ❤️ video
Thank you very much

Brilliant video, what a career!
And I’m sure we’ll only get to hear the half of it.
