  • Our Albert is talking to Mrs H about his arse, Graeme talks about strike action, has another moan about remote assessments, Elvijs finds an engineer living under the engine cover. Jurij plays an April Fool on Tiago. A bit of scuffly weather. The Chief Engineer is filmed at his emergency station. Bogdan does not like the rough weather. A rough ride home for the Daughter Craft. Amazing sunrises & sunsets

I was a helicopter pilot on the North Sea from 1985-1999. The pay problem was the same then. Shell; “you can have a contract extension, but for 10% less than the last one” We all voted with our feet, eventually the pilots went on strike, the pay went up, but the oil companies still pushed limits, safety and financial. I don’t miss off-shore, the oil companies were disgraceful and it sounds like they’ve never changed.

The platforms that I worked with were in a disgraceful condition. If our ship was the same we would never have been allowed to sail. Some of the TEMPSCs were literally black with dirt.

I served on board the USS America with VF-33 fighter squadron. Hard work but I do miss those sunsets as well. The best I’ve ever seen at sea. Even though I served on an aircraft carrier I still had a fear of the open sea. Just the enormity of it and those swells.

Sad to see you leave the sea…..it was wonderful following ….to us an adventure….to you a hard bloody job, again, many thanks Graham ……. Glad to see you telling it straight, on your last trip, and saying how you felt 👍👌🇮🇲💪. Ps it’s not like the inspectors for the tick box exercises can’t see the bloody conditions you are in…..you bloody filmed it for us all to see…..madness mate , pure madness, ! You’re better off at Trinity Farm….it’s a world away, and no damn boxes to tick…..😂😂😂👍👍👍

      Thanks, Andy.
It was great fun doing all the filming and most of the crew loved to take part since it meant that their friends & families could see them at work.
The inspectors are as frustrated about the BS as we are and are sick to death of watching videos and would rather be on the ships. But it’s their hierarchy who make the rules.
Anyway, having great fun on the farm 😊

Hi Graham, this is Alan Nicholls ex chief engineer with with North Star. I was 47 years at sea the last 33 with NS. I am sure our paths crossed but I cannot remember where or when. I remember your skipper Donald was with me on the Grampian Supporter many years ago, he was only a coxswain then. I retired a couple of years ago , hope you enjoy your retirement. Hello Graham - I have been watching these from the beginning, and have found them to be an excellent view into the life of those in our profession (ie, ERRV personnel), and I take my hat off to you for all of your endeavors to bring your crew's experiences to the notice of a much wider audience. However, with regard to the Remote Assessments, I would just like to put our side (ie, that of a training provider) to you so that you can appreciate a different perspective on the situation. Although I do not assess crew for your company (North Star) operating out of Aberdeen, I do work for a training provider in the Southern Sector of the North Sea, and have done so for the last 20 years, with (up until Covid) the job of working on each vessel on location and transferring at sea to the next, which I very much enjoyed doing. However, Covid changed how we had to do things, and we had to begin working in another way to keep the crew's certification up to date. That new way are the 'Remote Assessments', and whilst I fully understand (from the perspective of having been at sea all of my working life) the difficulties this has created (not just for you, but for ourselves as well) I would also like to assure you that we aren't just continuing with these just because we are lazy or that we just like doing it this way. What we began was a necessity, born of a global situation in which we had lockdowns and the like, and we knew that moving vessel to vessel would be a major risk for infection for both you and ourselves, and that the clients also said 'no' to it as well. Now we are 3 years into the Pandemic, which has not simply 'gone away'. All medical authorities acknowledge that, while the risks have lessened due to mass vaccination etc, there are still risks involved. Covid is still there, and is a major factor in our decisions, as you stay on one vessel for each trip, where we move from vessel to vessel, and we can assess as many as 5 or even 6 vessels in a 2 week period (which was our usual length of trip), with also associated transfers on vessels to get us where we need to be. Even doing assessments in dock carries the same risk, as again several vessels can be captured even in one day in somewhere like Aberdeen. This has recently been driven home for me, as a few weeks ago I came down with the virus for the 1st time (despite all my best efforts). Even though I have had all the boosters, I was still very ill with it for over a week or so. Just before that, however, for 2 days I tested negative, and only tested positive on the third day. Take that and put me on a ship, and then transferring using another vessel to get to my next one, and I could have over the course of 3 days, infected 3 ships. Fair to you guys? An acceptable risk, even given that we have no way of knowing how each individual will be affected by this virus? We believe that this is not acceptable as a risk either to your or to ourselves (after all, we have families too, some of whom may be vulnerable). Therefore, for the present time, this is why training providers have decided to carry this on. We very much appreciate the difficulties with weather, schedules etc, and it should be that, at least in the case of certs which are very much weather dependent such as boat tickets, a good amount of time should be given between assessments being requested and the actual expiry dates of the certs involved to allow for these factors. Also, believe it or not, this method has thrown up more difficulties for us that the way we were doing it, including the generating of more paperwork, but that at the moment is the way of the world. And, although it may seem pointless to you filming the C/Eng at his post, in Opito's eyes you are providing evidence of him acting in his role onboard, which is a part of the Rescue / Care cert! Please do not think this is to knock you in any way, just to explain how we are approaching this issue. What your contractors do is down to them, but we have a duty to you and to ourselves, and I hope that the above goes some way to show our perspective. In closing, may I wish you all the best of luck in your next job, and that I shall miss seeing your videos. All best, and may the wind be ever at your back 😀

@@Bigwavemaster1 The validation trials are conducted by a separate company (used to be Seacroft but I think they changed their name?), and therefore we don't have anything to do with them as such. I have done a couple when Seacroft requested if of us (ie, subcontracted), but that was a long time ago now. At a guess it might be to do with the actual timings / observation required, but then again I have seen it done where the dummies were thrown from the platform and there was a seacroft guy on the platform monitoring the exercises, and also where the dummies have been delivered to the vessel and the whole shebang has been done by the vessel with no other persons involved and the timings etc emailed to Seacroft in Aberdeen for them to check (they had to check each one before you could do the next one), so to be honest I imagine it could actually be done remotely. However I cannot speak for other companies as each have their own criteria, risk assessments and the like, as well as what Opito themselves allow under their guidelines. We as training providers deal only with the OODTP and AMA's, and up until a couple of years ago Opito only allowed the assessing of theoretical knowledge to be done remotely, not the actual physical stuff. They then changed that to allow both, but not for the AMA's (due to the equipment required such as cannulas, adv airway gear etc). Sorry I can't be more helpful on the validation trials, but as I say, we don't do them so you would have to inquire of someone from their company for a fuller answer.
