Listening to power metal always puts me in the mood to read old sword and sorcery novels and classic epic fantasy. Conan, Elric, Lord of the Rings, Belgariad, Shannara, Wheel of Time, Riftwar, Dragonlance, Drizzt, etc.
This is the reason I started to like powermetal I was already reading those books and listening to metal then I found a genre that sings these books using metal and I was hooked
Power metal was my way in for metal! I was 8, 9 years old, and my cousin was presenting me Rhapsody of Fire, DragonForce and a little bit of Blind Guardian. It was very little, but I fell in love and listened to the first albums by Rhapsody very often. Later on I listened to a lot of other power metal bands, obviously, but Blind Guardian became my favorite band.
I can hear the bass in Rhapsody for example, thats why its my favourite power metal band among other things, I think it's just the most complete epic/power metal band to ever exist.

In 2009 i got to see Dragonforce with original drummer, singer & bassist. Sonata Arctica was the opener. Both bands have a keyboardist, there was a keytar battle late in the set. It was epic.

I grew up w 90s and early 00s PW, powermetal in its golden era, with its fantasy mythological lyrics and melodies satisfies the human need for adventure, facing evil and fears and become a hero. I am a huge boxing fan since i was little for almost 30 years, just like ufc it satisfy our human need for violence and redirect it when we are seeing these gladiators fight.
First 7 albums are all time classics and deserve the word power in "Power Metal" ! Not to mention Eric Adams, the best metal singer (in the same league with Dio) of all time!
To be fair, Rhapsody of Fire was able to compel a symphonic orchestra to be featured pretty regularly in their records. Actually, together with early Nightwish they had some pretty cool influence of classically trained, almost operatic vocal, to the point where together with Therion and Epica they're labeled as symphonic metal within their genres. Also, the prime example of extremely goofy but catchy power metal band would be Gloryhammer, I think that due to their references specifically to Rhapsody's songs they're even goofier than Alestorm. I'm pretty surprised power metal is considered niche, as I've heard it being insulted because of it supposedly being one of the more mainstream genres, and getting "too pop-y".
Power metal is absolutely POSITIVE! And this speed, cheezyness, goofyness and positivity in the face of the world is their POWER. They GIVE IT ALL TO THEIR BEST.
Reminds me of a line from Gumball: "Metal Heads are just nerds who like to wear leather." And that became very apparent when i went to my first Sabaton concert. Was a blast :D

The last part is why I like power metal so much - it's a genre that overcome the curse of self-seriousness that plagues so much of metal and punk.
Manowar is the band that got me on the right track to metal, punk and even ska. I still thank them for that.
