You can tell that Coolea actually kind of likes this genre
He definitely likes most genres he's talking about.
He definitely actually hates it.
The trinity of Electronic Metal
Cybergrind (Grindcore)
Deathstep (Death Metal)
Dungeon Synth (Black Metal)
Not metal
Please do an ignorant guide to power metal next.
YES!! I’ve been wanting this for months
yes
yess
If you're reading this pls don't
World needs it
algorithm pretty fast wit it today
I absolutely love dungeon synth, thank you for brightening my day, friend ⚔️
you must be great at parties
@@AcidSh33tz raiding parties, yes~
@@AcidSh33tzwho needs parties when you can be a trve gnomewegian gnomelord
@@AcidSh33tzWhat do you mean you don’t want to listen to a 20 minute song of someone playing a $3 hello kitty synth while making goblin noises?
I love how you say "It sounds exactly like this image" and it's just describes the vibe perfectly
Depressive Silence mentioned: good video
Also check out Quest Master
This is an amazing video, in every way, like all your work on Black Metal. I am FLOORED by your level knowledge in not just the history of this genre, but even the most obscure of releases.
With this level of detailed knowledge that even surpasses my own, there is no way, NO WAY you are NOT a fan.
Regardless, keep up the amazing work!
Signed, a Norwegian from Kolbotn.
He's actually pretty dilettante. Very few if any actual obscure releases are mentioned here. Surface level video at best. No mention of Eternal Fear, Pazuzu, Grabesmond, Cernunnos Woods, Glacial Empire, Erevos, Nocturnal Funeral, Anger of Gods (or B.S.o.D.), Forgotten Pathways, Mournlord, Shadowcaster, Philosophy, and on and on and on. Most of those aren't even obscure by today's standards.
Nice to see you here, Andre.
Not surprise that you are a fan.
This is all literally just surface-level knowledge that somebody would acquire from spending an hour on the internet searching 'dungeon synth' and looking at a few forum pages. He doesn't even know how to pronounce Mortiis properly.
@@comfylain right? Bums me out to see all these superlative comments praising this guy's nescience.

I discovered dungeon synth through ambient-y interludes on Summoning albums and from that point turning on some dungeon synth is a must have when writing paper rpg modules
Powermetal and dungeon synth is what keeps me alive
The genre made for disassociative walks through your local wooded area
Too few documentaries are this hostile towards it’s own subject matter.
I just discovered this genre a couple weeks ago and I like it a lot! I like to put it on while I cook) clean. Makes me feel like I'm in an RPG
Do you get XP while you cook & clean?
@SamBrockmann no, it just drains your stamina. You have to do it though or else your health goes down and won't recover in any way until you clean, cooking makes food worth more health but it's not necessary.
@@fungustheclown666 , I mean, that. Was. The. Joke.
Have been into dungeon synth since half a year now. Never looked back.
Can personally recommend basically everything made by Umbria or Pauldron, but there is tons of stuff out there, some great some not, but I feel like if you are into fantasy-esque and ambient music you are bound to find something just right for you. I personally especially like the darker stuff that is not too monotone.
THANK YOU! THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I ASKED FOR!
All you gotta do now is cover Keller Synth and you will have reached the final stage of abstraction from metal.
Perfect for Valentines day!!
I randomly clicked on a Depressive Silence video a couple of years ago and been a fan of dungeon synth ever since.
SAME!
Can’t wait to hear your song man the little bit I heard sounds awesome!
man i love your videos, and i am definitely going to check out your song, keep doing what you do
Cool stuff my friend, good luck in your future releases!
Ngl this is your best video yet in my opinion! Please do an ignorant guide to power metal!
For anyone who wants to hear really nice calm dungeon synth, i would really recommend "Weress"
amazing upgrade in the editing!
do dsbm
Do NSBM.

Man I love your videos half of the time you're making fun of genres I like and I love it because you're just a funny dude giving me new information without boring my gen z ADHD brain
I love dungeon synth, and I listened to this while driving, and I have to confess that I had a stack of DnD books in my passenger seat from my last gaming session... And not the current edition, oh no, it's old shit, because ofc it is, lol. Honorable mention for this type of music (at least in my mind) is some of the tracks from the soundtrack for the late 90s PC games Thief: the Dark Project, and Thief2: the metal age. I guess they would be more "dark ambient" en general, but there's a handful of sections which recall all that I love about Dungeon Synth (look up Horn of Quintus on YT, and you can find someone who looped that 30ish second clip into like a 10 minute track. It's dark, minimalist, very atmospheric, and then occasionally throws punches like a heavyweight boxer.
which dnd are you playing right now?
@@Hdhdushzhz57743 we kinda had an "OSR" version of 3e from back before anybody used "OSR" to describe older editions, I take a lot from a document that is called "AD&D 3rd edition" which makes it run more like 2e ADND. It is also very very similar to Castles and Crusades btw, but from that basis I've homebrewed a lot, also borrowing from the 3e "Thieves World" book by Green Ronin for a setting inspired very heavily by the Thief games which I mentioned actually lol, cos when I get in to something I get all the way in I guess.
@@Hdhdushzhz57743 that's what I'm running now but I also like BECMI and the "Fictive Hack" systems quite a lot.
Coolea doing videos on music genres is a great watch for anyone who wants to learn other genres that they may haven’t heard of yet
hey Coolea! I love your videos! Do you think you could put a list of all the pieces of music or albums and artists that you reference in your video descriptions? I find myself wanting to explore the references you make but it's kinda hard to sim through your videos for them. No matter what, thx for these informative, yet funny, video essays on all kinds of music! It's always a pleasure to watch your videos!
8:13 literally me. i make dungeon synth in my room all day lol
Got a lot of laughs out of this. Bloody brilliant! Some good info in here too
I started listening to a lot of dungeon synth 6 months ago. It's great for drawing and sleeping
love the new song reminds me alot of aphex twin's weirder stuff
Örnatorpet and Aindulmedir were my intro to dungeon synth, and the Burzum album Thulean mysteries. Now it’s one of my favorite genres :)
I love me some Aindulmedir!
Aw man! Örnatorpets "Blodbad och efterspel" is my top 1 album alongside "The Winter Scriptures" by Aindulmedir. You got an excellent music taste there.
Can you do a video on Extratone. I think the genre is insane and would make an interesting video. I love your content!
I am a dungeon synth artist and this really nails it. Thank you so much, you made my day. I had to laugh so hard on the tram during my way to work 😂🧙🏼♂️⚔️🖤
Jo, it feels like you are going for a laid-back and slower edeting style in this video (makes sense with ambient synth music). I really like this more mature pacing.
Yes my boy finally made dungeon synth video!!! Let's go!!!
I was waiting for this
Hey man, just came say that the song you made was pretty good. Not my taste specifically, but it really has its own trippy kinda feel to it. You should definitely try it out more. Also love the cover art too
I've enjoyed some black metal since the wee ages of middle school, but I honestly didn't get majorly into Dungeon -Synth until pretty recently. I love some Umbria and the like.
P.S. "Das Ich" mentioned, nice!
2:12 his favorite gif remixed
Incredible innovation on a seemingly perfect base
Your song sounds cool, i like your vids bro ❤️
Hehe boi I was waiting for this one, thanks man
Thank you, now i can do my synth monstrosities with medieval dead goblins on the album art
I do enjoy me some dark ambient shit, electronica is one of my most listened to stuff.
I can't believe he name dropped Lord Lovidicus. He was my best friend in high school and I even did the vocals on one of his tracks, Gorgoroth on the album Daulu Burz-ishi. I was there since his first album, they were all created in his sweaty smelly basement. We also had a Black Metal band called Black Tyrants. Wow I cant believe how spot on this video was.
Vulsanoir is sick, keep going x
The Gucci Mane song Pussy Print was only rapped on by Gucci Mane. Kanye West produced it and sampled Burzum. We all know what a huge part of the national NSBM community Kanye is so Varg was actually probably pretty stoked.
I am doing my master's thesis on dungeon synth (yes, lol), do you perhaps have any list of the sources you used to find the information in your video? I found it funny but interesting also
Thanks for this video. Turns out I’m exactly this kind of music’s target audience it is good vibing out music because brake core is not cutting it
Would that piano interlude song on entombed inferno album be dungeon synth?
I play it when I'm running Old School Essentials. Fogweaver and Guild of Lore are my favorites
I've been waiting for this as a dungeon synth creator
Lord Lovidicus mentioned, common goated Coolea video. God I love Dungeon Synth.
In germany Das Ich (the me in english) count as neue deutsche Todeskunst (new german death art), the predecessor of german goth. I love that band. Good to know I already listen to a genre I never heard of.
Another Coolea Classic
Your song slaps. Love the atmosphere and movement in it.
Haha, nice video Coolea. 🤘
As being an active member and creator of the DS community, Thank you.
So,whats your karmacounter on reddit, recieved any updoots lately?
@@questionsfrog1918 uh I'm not active on Reddit. The DS scene is most active on Instagram and Bandcamp as far as I can tell. My project is called Baerdcyn tho. I've been in the scene for 3 years.
Are you covering Witch house next? also Blvsphemy Records is the place to check out for good dungeon synth and witch house
I can personally recommend Vampyric Wrath Unleashed by Order of Nosferat. Each black metal track is followed by a dungeon synth interlude. It's such a perfect combination, really dark and raw while perfectly setting the mood for some kind of a dark, medieval tale with vampires and castles and eternal night.
We need "An Ignorant Guide to Neofolk" NOW!
Your music sounds like a faze intro song from 2015
The Sleeping Green is one of my favorite DS albums. It's made by Trollhorn from Finntroll band. :)
Alot of german or "krautrock" bands from the late 60s to early 70s (Tangerine Dream, Kraftwerk, Neu, Ashra & Popol Vuh, Can, etc.) were already experimenting with ambient textures using synths & other studio effects + recording wizardry which has a similar outcome to Dungeon Synth.
Makes me think if the creation was just a coincidence or they partially took notes from it just like with Synthwave music being inspired by 1980s film soundtracks & electro music.
I was craving for the norwegian prison joke
This is my favorite type of content: High effort educational shitpost
we synthing w this one
Warraha from Poland is some excellent dungeon basement synth
FINALLY A VIDEO ON DUNGEON SYNTH MY PRAYERS HAVE BEEN ANSWERED
Too bad I'm an ADHD riddled zoomer that sits down and listens to these long ass ambient sounds that take me to the Scandinavian countryside
Mortiis...that's a name I haven't thought about in a long time. I always thought that it was weird how a guy connected to the Norwegian black metal scene was making electronic metal.
I remember back in 97 discovering Mortiis. Was literally an eye opening experience for me, going into something totally different in comparison with the rest of the black metal bands of that era.
Any video that gives my man Mortiis a signal boost gets all the good stuff for the Algorithm. Also a good and funny video btw
Mortiis played at enchanted forest in oregon, a supposedly haunted and fuckibg weird as hell theme park. I used to go there as a kid and I was pissed that I didn't get to see the goblins play there, as it sold out in like less than a week. Just fun mortiis stuff
please do an ignorant guide to noise rock, love your stuff💚
Digital Hardcore next pleasee Mr. Coolea
Bones Samples Burzum in his song ".Corteroy" amazing track, too. Team Sesh actually managed to blend the black metal sound with trap seamlessly. Ghostemane did pretty good in the early days as well.
i do enjoy your "slowed down" approach on this vid
DS has been my comfort music for years. There's no other genre that evokes certain feelings and fuels imagination.
The fact that the song that sampled Burzum features Kanye West is the most hilarious thing i learned after i looked into it when i watched this video
Dungeon Synth is just the old RuneScape soundtrack. I like it
Can you do splittercore, t3rror or extratone?
0:32 - the first moment in the video where coolea said something about stinky people
Dude, this intro scarely matches with my life 😅😅 are you spying me?
we are in DESPERATE need of a post-rock video and by we i mean me but still
Love ur videos lol
I seen mortiis supporting mayhem a few years ago, live it’s actually pretty good, puts you in a kind of trance, I couldn’t sit down and listen too it tho
Dude where do you find these genres
Please make a video on alternative like muse
I'm a nolife black metal guy, with a DS side project. I love Dungeon Synth. Thanks for covering it.
heh
can u pls do a video on groove metal
that shit goes hard, im sorry for the genre but that is the best thing for sampling i have heared in a long time.
The first dungeon synth IMO is burzums "Channeling The Power Of Souls" on the first demo
Coolea what software did you use to make your track?
thanks for putting me on, this is what its all about
Hooray Coolea with another Banger mates! Grab Food!
Do a video on magick metal
That actual Norwegian prison cell is fancier than my dorm room was. WTF...
Best music genre
