The pitch clock really saved baseball. The amount of time between each pitch in these old highlights is insane, can’t believe it never bothered me then 😂
This is when the Yankee-RSOX rivalry was almost officially over, with this 3-0 comeback by Boston, celebrating in Yankee Stadium. The rivalry and the curse officially ended a week later, when Boston beat the Cards in the World Series for their first WS title since the 1918 season. After this 2004 postseason, Pedro left in free agency to the Mets, the rivalry was over, and the Yankee-RSOX games have never been the same since.
Though he gave up 2 runs early, it’s interesting to see Pedro reach back for a few 95, 96 and 97 mph fastballs in this inning. I don’t remember that at all, Pedro was pretty much a finesse pitcher at this point in his career, so he really emptied the tank there.
That stood out to me as well. Pedro did something similar in his Mets debut. Gave up a 2 out, 3 run home run in the 1st and then struck the next batter out on 3 straight 95 mph fastballs. Though he was consistently reaching 94 that start. For the most part, I Pedro, seemed to throw 92-93 mph max in his final season with Boston and first with the Mets. I do agree that throwing 96-97 mph seemed to come at the expense of some of his command by this point as opposed to ,98, '99, or 2000 Pedro.
He forced them to let him take the mound, shouldn’t have been pitching but there was no way he was missing out on being part of putting the mail in the coffin of the Yankees after probably the greatest series ever. I remember watching this live in TV and seeing him come out of the locker room with a look on his face I’ll never forget. He wanted to finish them off. This was the only time in my life I ever really got into baseball. This series was so intense especially for Boston fans and every game mattered so much that for once baseball was not at all boring to me. After coming back 3-0 and winning the only way to top it at all would be to sweep the Cardinals which they did but it was far less exciting.

Too many people were criticizing Francona for putting Pedro in, and criticizing Pedro for allowing those two runs... but this appearance needed to happen. Pedro happened to find his form in this outing.
I honestly feel that it had to do with all the bad decisions the Red Sox historically make in the postseason that ruins their chances. But once Pedro started throwing 90mph+ pitches, I knew he'd get out of it.
@@Adgeatic The more I think about it, it could've been because the Red Sox bullpen has been on fumes despite pitching lights out from Games 4 to 7. Having to use Arroyo out of the bullpen as well is saying quite a bit. Because of the rain delay before Game 3, they had to play the rest of their games without a day off.

You gotta admit, Red Sox fans had to be squirming at least a little bit when Martinez gave up those two runs. I still don't understand Francona's decision to give the ball to Martinez in that situation.
I still don't understand why the Yankees choked that badly. Their lineup includes of 3 superstars hitters (Jeter, A-Rod, Gary) and 3 others strong bats (Posada, Williams, Matsui) yet they still couldn't get one win out of the last 4 games?
You can see the concern in Aroids eyes, he's clearly thinking... Did I get my shots before the game in the bathroom at KFC or do I need to call the doc?
It seemed a foolish move at the time to bring Pedro in - he sucked against the Yankees by this time, hadn't pitched well in the series, had given the lead away in G7 the year before, and he struggled again this inning. But maybe it paid off - because he pitched an excellent game in G3 of the World Series in his final start for Boston. Perhaps this short appearance, and getting through the inning, helped set him straight.
I agree. I'm a sox fan. I watched every moment of this series sitting in the same spot and wearing the same clothes. It still wasn't good to bring Pedro in. It's ok to criticize your team.
There initially was speculation that Pedro asked to be put into the game, but both Pedro and Terry Francona have denied this. When Pedro was asked by the producers of "Four Days in October" if he expected to pitch in Game 7, his response was a stern and clear "Hell no!" He said the call came in suddenly, and even he was scratching his head over the decision, but he had to do his job.
ZhangtheGreat I think Pedro said he was available before the game, I don’t think he expected Francona to use him against his recent nemeses: Matsui, Posada and Bernie
it was like his way of making him feel more apart of the comeback even though game 5 if not for clutch hitting by our sox it would have been his last start in a sox uniform
Was the Red Sox bullpen that terrible that year? I mean there is nothing wrong about using a starter in relief in the postseason, especially game 7. But come on, they lead 8-1 when he came in.
No, but Lowe was on 2 days rest and that bullpen was on a heavy workload from Games 3 thru 7 without any days off. Could've been because Embree and Timlin weren't ready just yet?
