My god this is such a core memory for me. This was the most baseball I can possibly imagine experiencing. Every single Massachusetts city and town absolutely lived and died with every moment. They made announcements about it on the high school PA system. Surreal.
Grew up in Maine and watching Ortiz and Brady in the early and mid 00s was surreal. When I learned the crushing history of Boston sports in the last decades it made me appreciate it all so much more. 12 titles in 20 years. Idc if I never see any of them win again. I saw more than in most fans dreams.
Northwest Connecticut resident. I still get chills everytime I watch highlights from this series. The start of 4 games that I never could have dreamed of when I was a kid
This series was the perfect story to explain why people are romantic about baseball. It was just absolutely beautiful, and created a moment for new fans to point at. 01 and 16 are very good as well

Same. When people asked me what my favorite show on TV ever was, I used to say the 2004 ALCS. Despite the amount of alcohol consumed, I'll never forget being at UMASS Lowell and watching this with my friends there. And the feeling of watching that team complete the historic comeback, in the wake of the 2003 ALCS, on the back of Ortiz's heroics.
Living in New England in 2003-2007, Sox vs Yanks was PEAK rivalry and it was incredible. As a kid, you couldn't ask for anything better. It'll never be like that again.
It flaired up again after the Joe Kelly fight in 2018 but once that season was over and my (our?) Sox went back to being wildly inconsistent as to whether or not they succeed it died out pretty fast. Shame, the sports a lot more fun when Sox/Yanks are at each other's throat.
@@CaptainWoggy 2018 deff felt like one of those years. But then we just dominated - especially in the playoffs (Brock Holt says hello), and the Yanks couldn't play the part. Plus, it was a lot of the fans who remember 03/04 who got into it, everyone else just played along. That's how I felt in CT
I remember going to a game in 05 and two strikes two outs, everyone stood up on their feet. Baseball and the Red Sox will just never reach that again. But at least we have the memories

My daughter was 2 weeks old and I hadn't watched baseball in over 10 years. My grandma was 93 years old from Middleboro, Massachusetts, so she was alive for the last Red Sox World Series. Idk what made me start watching this game, this time, but I'm glad I did. I called my grandma the day after they won the World series, all she said was, "I can die now". She passed January 3rd, 2005. I wouldn't believe it if it didn't happen.

I was born just TWO DAYS after Game 4 started..
Well, I remember my mother telling me that I was born at around 1:30 PM, or 13:30, which was about a little under six hours before the start of Game 6 of the 2004 ALCS on October 19.
The reason I say six hours is because I was born in the city where the Royals play, not in Boston, which is an hour behind.
On the subject of Ortiz, his grand slam in the 2013 ALCS, considering all the circumstances surrounding it, would be an excellent candidate for a Rewinder.
As a Tigers fan, I would prefer not to.

@@SammyMac19 It was the end of a great run for the Tigers. Leyland was gone after that year, the team started to get sold off, Mr. I died, and now the Tigers are in the mess that they're in now.

I was 15 when this happened, and I remember it like it was yesterday. I remember how this just felt magical. I remember telling myself how I was watching history take place. There was just something about this series that I’ll remember feeling, every time I watch it. “4 Days in October” is one of my favorite “30 For 30” docs. What Big Papi did in this series, was nothing short of miraculous.

I remember at one point I think it was Kevin MIllar he mentioned there were so many heroic moments in that postseason run that ordinarily all time great moments like the Dave Roberts stolen base, Bill Mueller bringing him home to tie, Schilling's bloody sock, Damon's grand slam, Pedros coming in as a reliever in game 7 to exorcise his demons with the Yankees, Derek Lowe pitching a solid game 7, David Ortiz in general were all just small parts of a big picture.
Same age... this kind of stuff MADE childhoods...

Millar’s “don’t let us win today!” is a rally cry I hear so often in Massachusetts to this day. Even if it’s used as a joke, it became an iconic line that spurned one of the most memorable comebacks in sports history.
Millar going on to basically outline the pitching plan to Game 7 and saying “then it’s anybody’s game.” makes the legend of the quote even better.
Fun fact: the 2005 Sox raised the banner with the Yankees on the sideline, and the cheer that went up for Rivera thanking him for the blown save was deafening. He tipped his cap with a grin because he got it. I hate the Yanks, but with him and Jeter, I hate them because they were never Sox. Anyway, I was diagnosed with an aggressive blood clotting disorder in May of ‘04, and part of those shenanigans have involved three strokes that have shot my memory. But I will never forget this series and that team, and have been wanting you guys to do something on this series since the channel started. So thrilled to finally see it (and not have to wait 86 years for it.) Now it’s time for my 192883756th rewatch of “Faith Rewarded.”

People always remember the 19-8 pileup from Game 3, but the first two games of the series weren't so one-sided.
Yanks got out to a huge lead in Game 1 while Mussina had a perfect game going into like the 7th inning, but the Sox stormed back and made it really sweaty at the end. Game 2 was also tight as well and both games actually required Mariano coming in to close the door. Game 3 finished as a blowout, however, people probably forget that it was a back-and-forth slugfest for the first few innings before the Yankees pulled away.
Every game that series was tense with the only exception being Game 7. Damon got thrown out at the plate in the first inning and just as Boston fans were about to let the "here we go again" negativity creep in, Ortiz crushes the next pitch into the seats. The grand slam by Damon that happened later made it a formality, but I knew it was over right there when Ortiz killed the crowd with that home run.
I'm a diehard Yankees fan by the way. What transpired in 2004 was about as catastrophic as it gets, but since then I've developed a legitimate morbid curiosity when it comes to revisiting that series. I hated that the Yanks lost to the Red Sox in historical fashion, but I can't shake the warm feelings of nostalgia looking back all those years later. Maybe it is because the rivalry was so good back then that it's hard not to look back now with fondness.

I remember watching this game in the dominican republic when I was a kid. This was the best baseball playoff series i've ever watched.
This was my last series, for whatever reason after this I quit watching baseball, like it finished the book for me. Crying with happiness was in a dark place then and this was the sign I needed to keep going
I recorded theses games and rewatched them for years. I was caught in the mob when Sox beat the Yankees one game and it was getting out, people were so riled up!

Let out a feral scream when I saw this. This series is my first real sports memory. I wasn’t allowed to stay awake long enough to see the ends of games 4 and 5, but Schilling’s Game 6 performance and the Game 7 blowout will live with me forever. I honestly thought if y’all were gonna cover this series, it would be Damon’s Game 7 grand slam, but this is just as sweet.
Also, on the theme of Big Papi, would love a rewinder on his 8th inning slam in the 2013 alcs.
I’ll never forget being a middle school kid sneaking out of my bedroom to watch this, getting caught by my dad, and him not saying a word about it and watching it with me cuz he knew we were watching history lol
oh man that sucks. I had strict parents but this series was must watch in the house. I had no interest in going to sleep but I feel like I probably wouldn't have been allowed to go to bed anyway. Core childhood memory created and a fanatic Boston sports fan was born that day. Dirty Water remains my favorite song to this day, so many good memories

Same. Went to his induction in august and it was legendary, I even got to go with my dad, who I watched the 13 and 18 runs with (I was 2 during the 04 run and 5 during the 07 run). He’s just got clutch in his blood, and his love for boston and the people around him is as big as him
Wouldn't have gotten out of the 86 year drought without him. Not only was he crucial in breaking the curse, he went on to win another two rings in Boston. Man did so much for that city.

My uncle is Mike Timlin he got the whole family got tickets to the ALCS that year. It was probably one of the most magical moments in baseball history. It was joy and hope in equal measure.
Mike Timlin was my favorite sox reliever when he was with the team, he was a big part of the 03 and 04 teams and in my eyes as a Redsox fan will always be a hero for being part of that special squad. That entire series was magical

I was in Ireland at the time following the game on an online box score that refreshed every 60 seconds. The sun was just threatening to come up when they won. Ruined my sleep for a week. Worth it.
Wakefield saving the Sox bullpen in game 3 was so key.
i didnt become a fan of baseball until i was a teenager (early 2010s) watching the 30 for 30 of this series almost made a red sox fan. i could only imagine what is like to watch the series live as it happened
It was absolutely unbelievable. I was working at a car wash during the series n when we fell down 0-3 in the series, a guy came thru with "NYYANKS27" license plates. I obviously had on a Sox hat. I seen him, seen his plates, and refused to touch his car. He came out and said "it's OK brother, it's only baseball. Besides, the series is over man. Might as well accept it" to which I replied "Last I checked series goes to 7. Remember I told you that" (not at all believing we had a legit shot but refusing to give in).
He came back the day after game 7 and gave me a $50 visa gift card for "Having faith when it don't look so good. THAT is what baseball is all about". Pretty incredible memory

Been waiting for this one for years. Another interesting fact is the song Tessie by the Dropkick Murphys was released earlier in 2004 and paid homage to a group of fans that formed in 1903 and disbanded in 1918, the exact period of Boston's championship dominance.

I still remember that series like it was yesterday. I was 15 and a hardcore Yankee fans and had actually bet a classmate who was hardcore Sox fan that we were gonna sweep. Man that was the toughest series to ever watch. The bloody sock still haunts me. But in retrospect you gotta appreciate what Big Papi, Manny, Pedro & company did for that team. Like someone mentioned earlier, this was the peak of that Yankee-Bosox rivalry.

Words cannot describe how much Papi means to me as a guy who grew up during his time with the sox. As a kid in Boston, he was my absolute hero. I genuinely love him like he were a friend of mine irl.

I was 4 years old when this happened and it's one of my earliest memories. I didn't live in Massachusetts but my dad grew up in Worcester and indoctrinated me into being a Sox fan at birth. It was the first time in my life where I encountered my dad being truly awe struck and excited to that degree. We watched every single game in their playoff run and every single moment of it felt like a Disney movie.
Detroit fan here. 2004 was such a formative year for me as a young sports fan seeing the Pistons win the title and then the Sox comeback on the Yanks. Granted I’m far from a Boston fan, seeing this and the history of the curse and the Sox/Yanks rivalry culminate in this definitely solidified my love for the game.

@@pat-rick8686 The Yankees were definitely an offensive juggernaut, but their starting pitching was suspect all year and finally exposed itself in the playoffs. No longer having the likes of Pettitte/Clemens/Wells - guys with established playoff resumes - was a void they were never able to overcome. Their game plan was simply to mash enough to get the ball to Mo.
The Yankees biggest strength in 2003 was their starting pitching depth and that became their biggest weakness in 2004. Meanwhile, the Sox biggest weakness was starting pitching depth (after Pedro) and not having a legitimate closer. Both of those needs were addressed when they signed Schilling and Keith Foulke who were huge impact players for them in 2004.
@@aznpikachu215 I'd argue 0-3 in baseball is harder to come back from than 28-3 in football. Patriots only had to win one game, the Red Sox had to win 4... in a row. In a game as volatile as baseball, especially in the postseason, it's incredibly easy to drop 1 of 4 games even if you have a great team. The Red Sox were clear underdogs that series too, even before going down 0-3. Don't get me wrong 28-3 is ridiculous but 0-3 was considered impossible until they did it. Gets even crazier when you consider that the Sox had to face the best closer of all time down a run in the bottom of the 9th with their season on the line and somehow managed to tie it up to live another day.

The world knew Roberts was going. Literally every person watching that game knew he was going. Game on the line, best closer of all time, pitch run, up the middle from a mediocre hitter, the spin as he gets up from sliding into home... One of my favorite childhood memories
a mediocre hitter? Bill Mueller won the AL batting title with the sox and has a near 300 career average. Just for giggles he also hit a walk off GS against Rivera earlier that year during the "fight game" that turned the season around. He has a 455 career average against Mariano Rivera the greatest closer of all time.....but Bill owned him...He is also the only player to have a 3 HR game where he hit 2 GS one from each side of the plate

I'm a lifelong braves fan who grew up in Alabama but game 4 of the 2004 ALCS and the Boston comeback will always be the most memorable baseball event I've ever seen. I feel like you glossed over how epic Dave Roberts' steal was when watching it live.
So spring 2005, I'm in FT. Myers, Florida. It's a rainy day, so me and my buddy got to the mall in FT. Myers. it's about 10am and the mall just opened. We walk in and directly walk into theusic store. There were already people in the store. I kinda noticed how tall one of them was. I look up and standing before me is David Ortiz, Manny Ramirez, Edgar Renteria, and Renteria's father. I was in such a shock, I couldn't say anything. I just kinda stared. My buddy was struck too. We didn't ask for any autographs and I think they appreciated that. I should've got one but...oh well. I will never forget who I saw and how struck I was. Keep up the great work bruddah

Those 03-04 lineups were so good that Bill Mueller won a batting title hitting 6th. He was an underrated player for the sox and the real hero during game 4...He is the one that got the key hit off the best closer of all time when EVERYONE was watching....and the season on the line
Remember when during his at bat vs Mariano in game 4 when he at first squared around to bunt? Then he shocked the infield by lasering one up the middle. Awesome moment!

When I watched this series it had seemed like these games were the center of the universe. The moment Papi hits the home run, watching it again sends a chill up my spine.
His Game 5 game winning hit was even more clutch, or at least it felt that way to me at the time.

as a Massachusetts native, im a little biased, but the 2004 ALCS series was the most magical sports moment of all time. Everything that the pats, the celtics, and the bruins have accomplished have been wonderful, but these 7 games will never be topped imo. going from another hopeless nightmare series against the evil empire for the 1 millionth time to world series glory was unlike anything i've experienced as a sports fan before or since. absolutely legendary

I grew up in south Florida which has more yankee fans per capita than anywhere on earth. I cannot tell you the intoxicating smugness of walking into algebra the next morning thinking “man, that was something special.” Having absolutely no idea how geeked I would be mere days later.

I remember thinking after game 3, they can still do it, just got to beat them in 4 straight, they've done that before. Just hopeless ramblings of a cursed fan, but it happened. The world series felt like a formality, it really did.
And 2003 Aaron bleeping Boone off Tim Wakefield was one of the most painful moments I've felt in my life of sports Fandom. Absolutely crushing. Made the next year even better. I wish I could run through that several week span just one more time, there was a special feeling in the air.
Nothing will ever top this series for me. The absolute peak of my sports watching experience.
This was the first baseball playoff series that I decided to sit down and watch from start to finish and I am sure that I won't live long enough to see one better than this 04 Sox run.
